Moving Samba PDC to NT PDC

2004-01-13 Thread Mario Fernandez

I've inherited a network running Samba 3.0 as a PDC and would like to
migrate to either NT 4.0 or windows server 2003 and was wondering if anyone
could offer any suggestions on how to move the SAM over to a Windows PDC.

Any tools out ther that will help acomplish this task. I've already tried
replicating the SAM by hand and that has not worked.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mario

Dear all,

We have a situation where exchange 5.5 users are subscribed to a list as
supplied by a unix listmanager. When a message is sent to this list, there
are 240 members, there always seem to be a number of failures, which appear
to be random. Any ideas why? I have looked for events in the logs after
switching on all logging for mta, is, transport etc, but nothing useful.
They are not over their mailbox limit, they do not all have inbox rules, so
I am baffled.

Demoting BDC to member server running exchange

2002-09-09 Thread Mario Fernandez

I'm in the process of changing our exchange server (Exchange 5.5 SP4 on NT 4
SP6a) which also happens to be a BDC to a stand alone server. I want to
minimize downtime and was wondering if any of had used UPromote from Algin
Technology? To either demote or promote a BDC to a member server.

Also what the recommendations are to this regard, should I just re-install
NT and exchange or trust UPromote?

Thanks

Blocked Outlook attachments

2002-06-12 Thread Mario Fernandez

Some of our new users got the latest Office SR-2 release with the latest
Microsoft security fixes (pain in the ass), and now they can't open
attachments sent to them with .bat extensions. I have my own security
policy already in place with proper virus checking and all the necessary
security checks that I'm comfortable with, don't really need MS adding any.
Enough bitching, would anyone know of a way around it I've browsed TechNet
and the only solution I've found is for Outlook 2002 not Outlook 200 SR-2.
Any help would be appreciated

Certs are not a sign of competency. They just mean that the person is
capable of memorizing braindumps. I interviewed MCSEs that answered the
question Explain your NT domain structure in your previous job with an
answer like We had ATM coming to the back of our PCs. You've got to
be
careful with MCSEs that come with huge resumes. There are some ways you
can
tell if they're good or not though. For example if the candidate writes
MCSE with a larger font than his own name, you probably have a clueless
wall-licker in your hands.

If a person doesn't have certification, it means that he/she has not sat
through the tests. That person can be the most knowledgeable guy out
there.

Okay, guys I need some help here, an e-mail was just forward to me from one

internal user, but the From line doesn't show the Exchange name. it shows
the SMTP address, and the first part of the smtp address. In the sent line
there is no time when it was sent. It just says none. Now I think someone
relayed into my exchange server, but how would I go about getting this
situation identified and rectified.

The magnet won't get the metal flakes out of the carrier if you don't
disassemble it. I prefer taking the disks apart regularly to dust
(Pledge works best - it even leaves the server room smelling lemony
fresh). We have RAID5+1, so I don't even need to take the box offline to
do it.

If you have drives that are faster than 7200rpm, tiny metal particles
will
collect on your disks because they spin so fast. You should clean these
out
by waving a powerful magnet over your disk drives.

Everything
I've read so far is specific, and always warn against using any of these
utilities unless ther's a problem. Anyone recommend otherwise.

White space = amount of unused space in your store, after
defragmentation
Free space = amount of unused space on your hard drive

Exchange will go out and grab more free space when it needs to, up to
the
limit of your hard drive, as the volume of messages stored on the server
grows in number. As you delete user mailboxes however, and Exchange
defrags
your Store, you will notice additional white space. Don't worry about
it.
Exchange will reuse it as more mail is stored on your server.

Have them forward them all back to her account?

OR, you possibly could retrieve them by using a client that has Recover

GroupShield. I never actually ran GroupShield but it is highly very
very unlikely that it relies on Organizational Forms Library.

Subject: Organizational Library Issue

I am having some issues with our Organizational forms.

I have 5 libraries in there and not sure how. I found an article that
matches my problem almost exactly. Q272187

But we are a single site with 17 server and many of the servers have no
forms at all.

My questions are:

1. How or should I delete all the organizational forms and start again.
And how do I do it. The article is not clear as far as I can tell. I
believe I go to the server container and then the public folders and
delete from there. Then replication should delete it from the existing
servers.

2. We use group shield. Will I break group shield. McAfee says no.
Any body tried this.

3. I backed up all the outlook forms in there to my local personal
library and will reinstall after creating a new library.

4. Article Q152422 How to Remove Orphaned Public Folders is close to
telling me how to delete an orphaned public folder, which I do have an
Organization library this orphaned.

So, am I on the write track to getting my forms to replicate.

So my plan is this:

Back up the forms to a PST Q190994
Delete the libraries including the orphaned, (NOT SURE or CONFIDENT HOW)
Recreate a SINGLE organizational library Q184765 or Q247279

Will this fix my problem without breaking Groupshield or anyone else.

Any advice.

RE: Exchange backups

2002-02-22 Thread Mario Fernandez

When I do NT backups I can either do online exchange backups but this does
not backup the resgistry or user directories. If I do an off line backup NT
backup still doesn't allow backups to a file

deleting and creating public folders. It should have no effect on

And
how do I do it. The article is not clear as far as I can tell. I believe I
go to the server container and then the public folders and delete from
there. Then replication should delete it from the existing servers.

2. We use group shield. Will I break group shield. McAfee says no. Any
body tried this.

3. I backed up all the outlook forms in there to my local personal library
and will reinstall after creating a new library.

Any advice.

from the FAQ. Here's what I'm doing:

Moving Exchange from one server to another. Both are configured with NT4
SP6a, E5.5 SP4. Both are in the same NT domain, the same Exchange Org and
Site, each server has a different name. After the successful move, I will
be removing the original (which is the first server in site) Exchange server
from the site; but the actual server will remain as it is our PDC. That is,
only the Exchange server application will be removed from it.

The original server is also the Proxy server and is the server with the
physical connection to the internet. The new server is a member server of
the domain. This is a single domain.

Looking at his instructions, I've completed everything thru number 5. I'm
not sure I understand steps number 6 and 6a. When it says move any
connectors from the old server to another server, does that mean to the new
Exchange server or a third server? And since this is a single site, can I
assume that step 6a doesn't apply for me?

As you can see I'm pretty confused and new to Exchange. I can't even see
how to move connectors. If you can help here, that would be great, or,
recommend a book that would help.

Thanks.

moving exchange

2001-12-06 Thread Mario Fernandez

I will be performing an exchange 5.5 move to a new server, just wanted to
know if the technet article Q155216 also applies if I want to make the new
exchange server be a stand-alone server instead of a PDC. Presently it was
originally set up as a PDC, I think it's better as a stand alone doing
nothing but Exchange stuff instead of as a PDC, file server, and print as it
is presently. Any thoughts.

Subject: NDR when sending mail to PF

Hi All,

Am probably overlooking something simple here, does anyone know what I am
doing wrong?

Exch 5.5 SP4

I am trying to send a mail to a public folder from a source external to the
organisation.

On each attempt I get an NDR containing the following text:-

The message could not be delivered because you do not have create
permissions on this folder or it is only available to folder owners at this
time

I have looked at Q193926, which does not apply.

I suspect it is a permissions problem as the NDR suggests, but I am now
stumped as to where to look from here.

The anonymous permissions on the folder is Contributor.

Thanks

Nick Field

Do they know the server by name?

To answer your question, the Q article for migrating to a server with the
same name still applies if its not a DC (as long as a DC is available to
it).

The server you moved too, is it a PDC/BDC or a stand alone ?

Does it have a computer account in/from the original domain ? If not,
you won't be able to start it.

synchronization. But MAPI AV has some notable downsides. Or you can scan
it before it hits the mailbox.

Check out both Q269439 and Q264731 concerning tasks failing with a VAPI
scanner. The two articles seem to point towards changing the values in 2
dif't directions (changing OpenRetryDelay to 250 or 5000 where the default
is 500). Also check out Q263949 to give you a more thorough overview of
VAPI and attachments.

Exchange 5.5 SP4, NT4 Sp6a

Is there any Exchange 5.5 AV product that doesn't interfere with
archiving
and synchronizing (mailbox-PST operations, basically). After following
the
MSKB advice re. registry settings for tackling this, we're still having
problems.

FWIW, the problem persists after moving exchange to a new, more powerful
system.

TIA.

ScanMail

2001-10-02 Thread Mario Fernandez

I've been having problems with the Trend's ScanMail ever since I re-booted
the Exchange server. When I look at the services both the Realtime Scan
service and scan monitor are up and running, and the Realtime scan monitor
window says that everything is fine, however it does not appear to be
scanning e-mails as it used to. I'm running NT4 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4
with ScanMail 3.52.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

RE: ScanMail

2001-10-02 Thread Mario Fernandez

The ScanMail Realtime Scan monitor does not give a list of the scanned
messages. I don't get the avg processing rate. When I try to update
UPDATE: Error in prepare patch programWEB:

I had originally submitted this error to the Trend's support,

Question from :

product : ScanMail for Exchange
product Version : 3.52

Serial Number : SEEF-0018-3918-7639-5283

os : Windows NT
os version : 4.0

Question Category : Real-time Scanning
Question Description :

I'm using NT 4.0 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4. I had to re-boot the server
and now the Real time scan monitor keeps on telling me that the Real-time
scan service iss stopped I have tried stopping and startinf the service
but it keeps on giving me the result.

This is the response I got,

I have studied your case and itemized your concerns below. PLease inform me
if I have misinterpreted anything.

-
Problem (1.) I'm using NT 4.0 SP6a and Exchange 5.5 SP4. I had to re-boot
the server and now the Real time scan monitor keeps on telling me that the
Real-time scan service is stopped I have tried stopping and restarting the
service
but it keeps on giving me the same result.

-
Solution :
Go to Start | Control Panel | Services and scroll down to
ScanMail_RealTimeScan. Click the Stop button. After the service stops, click
the Start button. Often this fixes the problem.

If not, you may have a corrupted profile for SMEX__PF, where is the name of
the affected Exchange server. Please perform the following steps to fix it:
1. Logon to the Exchange server as the account which ScanMail for Exchange
is running on.
2. Stop the ScanMail services.
3. Use your mail client to re-create a new profile (e.g.,
SMEX_{ServerName}_PF) and point it to the SMEX_{ServerName}_MB mailbox.
4. Use your mail client to make sure that it is the default profile.
5. Restart the ScanMail services.

After trying the above steps I still didn't get it to work I changed the
start-up account to the exchange account abnd this got it working but I
still get the impression it's not working, everything seems buggy.
