RE: Badtrans and SirCam

2001-12-03 Thread John Matteson

Why should I blame the AV product.

Both problems could have been fixed by the users going to the WINDOWSUPDATE
site and pulling down the critical updates. That's not too hard is it? The
users just have to open IE, click on Tools - Windows Update, then when the
site pops up, down load the critical updates. They don't even have to check
the box, just hit the big blue arrow that says DOWNLOAD, then reboot at the
end.

For all the griping people do at/about Microsoft, they couldn't have made it
any easier to keep a workstation up to date on basic security fixes.

Yeah, well Mcafee 4.5.1 (NO SP) would not detect badtrans with compressed
files set and scan default files (even tho PIF and SCR in the default file
scan) the 4176/4.1.60 combination fixes that. So don't quite blame the user

Corporate policies may or may not allow all users to
access WindowsUpdate, or if they are using WinNT / 2000 / XP
they might not have local admin rights.

Not quite as simple as your glib assertion would have it.

RE: Badtrans and SirCam

2001-12-03 Thread Black, Nathan

You punched a peeve.

After supporting over 100 Windows home users a weekend for the last eight
months, I can tell you, they updated from windows update or the 'update
alert' and kept up with the updates until the computer started giving
Exception OE's out the wazoo.

So then they 'rebooted' (user-speak for used the rescue cd) to get their
machine to start working again and now refuse to do any updates because they
discovered what they think are more problems with Microsofts patches than
with getting infected with a virus.

When pressed on the issue (I'm a security freak) they all comment that
they never keep anything important documents on the computer anymore
because the keep having to 'reboot' it. I mention to them that they should
be concerned about the rest of the internet because their DSL connections
are flooding other users. They couldn't care less, not my problem.

So what if I have to rebuild it every 90 days, sure beats crashing every
single day because of some 'update'.

This isn't just a few users.

Nathan Black

p.s. I do part time Internet consulting with a U.S. ISP with over 130,000
users, on average I speak to 100 users a weekend with about 80% expressing
the above attitude. 95% of WinME users express their frustration. And try
explaining why Windows XP that they just bought needs 'security updates'
(besides the fact that the Connexant modem that came with the system, will
only keep them connected for less than 10 minutes sheesh

And to some extent, it is understandable. When a user goes out and buys a
car, other than for tags, they really don't have to go anywhere else or
purchase anything else to make it usable or safe. Everything needed to make
it usable is included when you take delivery.

It's rather hard to explain just WHY they need a personal firewall, virus

Well you have to look at this in the entire perspective.

Taking the spin on your analogy.

To be honest the car and computer are both useable of the lot, or out of the
box more often than not.

However most people don't drive the car without.

Insurance (incase of accidents)recurring cost here.
Checking the Tires from time to time
Checking the OIL, and other fluids..
Wipers, Brakes, Tune ups?

All on-going maintenance to be safe and have trouble free operations as much as
possible.

The virus scanner, personal firewall, and such for the computers are basically
the same thing in our current world. Don't you think?

No sir, you REALLY didn't need that catalytic converter in your exhaust
system. It just robs you of MPG and makes you use that more expensive

I said that the user didn't need to purchase any thing else to make it
useable or safe. And don't we have an aftermarket customization market as
well, mouse pads in any shape, color and texture you want; screensaver
packages that make toasters fly across the screen, or you can watch Kimba

2001-12-03 Thread John Matteson

Again.. I said USEABLE, not Legal (insurance, tags, tax sticker).

Having worked in a service station, way back when full service wasn't just
for people with handicap plates, you would be surprised at how many almost
flat tires came in, cars running without (a lot of) coolant, oil that
didn't touch the stick, etc.

We train (try to, anyway) people about their cars The Shell Answer Man,
driver's education (in and out of high school), and general circulation
magazines out the youhoo that tell people about proper car maintenance.

When was the last time you saw an article about personal firewalls or
computer virus protection in Cosmo magazine? [The last article on virus
protection I saw there talked a lot about latex.]

Why does it have to come from Microsoft?

Why can't the system builder install an AV product on the system. I'm sure
if HP worked a deal with Trend or Norton for their home PC virus product,
the value add would be great, at little extra cost to the end user.

RE: Badtrans and SirCam

2001-12-03 Thread Black, Nathan

Flame. -4 Karma. I can't resist the reply to that bit of nonsense.

No, if Microsoft made a secure OS it would be the end of the world, because
you know H.E.-double-toothpick will be frozen over.

(if the truth hurts, stop here)

Microsoft is under Anti-trust scrutiny because they made shady deals, goes
like this:

1. License us your software NOW
2. Now that you licensed us your software, we aren't going to license it
from you anymore but are going to compete with you directly since we
previously licensed your code. (see RealAudio)
3. You, stop making your product for Windows, and let us do that, you can
keep your program for other platforms. (see QuickTime and Netscape)
4. Ignore this offer of 1 million to your head software engineer's to come
work for Microsoft.
5. Also ignore this extra 500,000 if they leave you today. (see Nathan
Mhyrvold)
6. Oh, you want to match that offer? then ignore this 3 million dollar
counter-offer, all your engineer's belong to us. (no base jokes)
7. You continue to compete with us? Then we buy you, here is 1.5 billion
(or 2?), we own you. (oops, FTC won't allow that. see Intuit)

You get the idea. Nothing with adding Security has to do with Anti-trust.
Then again, the deal they got from the DOJ beats everything they had before.
Government should stay out of the free market, but that's another flame
altogether.

Corporate policies may or may not allow all users to
access WindowsUpdate, or if they are using WinNT / 2000 / XP
they might not have local admin rights.

Not quite as simple as your glib assertion would have it.

True but then it's simple incompetence on the part of the network admin, A
home user has the excuse of ignorance no matter how poor an excuse you or I
may think it is, but a corporate network administrator has no excuse at all,
preventing this sort of mess is part of what they are paid for.

Why does it have to come from Microsoft?

Why can't the system builder install an AV product on the system. I'm sure
if HP worked a deal with Trend or Norton for their home PC virus product,
the value add would be great, at little extra cost to the end user.

Yeah, well Mcafee 4.5.1 (NO SP) would not detect badtrans with compressed
