Some will even rise to the occasion to defend hazing. Even very smart
people do this, including doctors that defend 36 hour shifts for
interns, and then have the temerity to complain about the high cost of
mal practice insurance or unfair tort awards. But I digress.

Call it lazy if you like. But a kind pointer to someone in need costs
 little and gains much.

The odd thing is that those that have been hazed and complained
mightily about it, frequently appear a year or two later as some of the
harshest slammers of newbies.

This is true in a variety of settings where hazing occurs.

RE: wear a cup if you plan on posting questions

2003-03-12 Thread B. van Ouwerkerk
It's ok to be a newbie but it's not OK to play stupid.

If someone is not clever enough or to lazy or whatever_you_want_to_call_it
to do a search on google or on a knowledgebase then how do they have the
guts to come to a list where ppl are who have spend time to educate
themselves and ask questions one could easily answer with google or the
knowledgebase.
If you don't know how to search then you're not worth to be an admin;
instead you should hire someone.

Sometimes you just can't find an answer, lists like these are very good
resources if you're dead in the water. But not before you did as much as
possible to find an answer yourself. And even then you could have hit an
unique bug and no one can help you..
That only happened to me once and I found a way to solve the problem on my own.

You really need to read the information you will find here:
http://www.catb.org/%7Eesr/faqs/smart-questions.html
Wow.. does this sound like great flame bait or what :-)

RE: wear a cup if you plan on posting questions

2003-03-11 Thread Etts, Russell
Hi there

When I first joined this group, I made this very same mistake (asking a
question that was clearly in a Q article). Yes, I was slightly
insulted. Then I realized something... I WAS BEING LAZY. By making
sure that I look everywhere and put in the work myself before I ask a
question, I've become a better admin. I know what questions to ask...
and I know where to look for answers.

Remember - no form of discipline is painless. Better to be chastised by
the wise than to be praised by fools.

Thanks

Re: wear a cup if you plan on posting questions

2003-03-10 Thread B. van Ouwerkerk
If you follow these guidelines:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

You'll never get flamed. Not even on high tech Linux lists..

I've seen way to much questions which one could have answered easy by using
google, alltheweb or norhernlight. And within less time then to way for an
answer coming from a list.

I consider it a good thing to tell ppl to STFW/RTFM: Don't feed them but
learn them how to catch fish by themselves.

Sometimes you just can't find a solution.. or you need to verify
something.. then a list can be a great resource.

But..heed the warning. Do not post questions that you could/should
have been able to answer yourself. Responses can be very humiliating if,
for instance, you ask a question about something that is in the archives, or
is very basic to messaging. It may be one of the most valuable lists, but
wear a cup if you plan on posting questions.
