I think this user has the same problem as I have, that there are NO prompts
from the ISP's interface which waits until pppd sends some LCP packets before
continuing the handshake.

My reading indicates that the PPP session should commence to send the LCP
packets after the chat script exits - which _should_ occur when the modem
returns the CONNECT message -

Are we missing something from the pppd command line?? I have been back and
forth over this countless times, dd if I can find it?

I did the download form the official Mandrake page. I ran the MD5SUM on both
iso packs and it passed. I burned at 2 x rather than 4. I tried the install
on two different machines. Both failed in EXACTLY the same way. Version 7
commercial package installed on both with no errors.

I am stumped. I did order the cds form cheapbyte and I will see how it goes.

By the way, I must admit that the install goes MUCH easier that SUSE. That
is one reason I want to try to stay with Mandrake.

[expert] IMP and Horde

2000-07-14 Thread John Smith

I am thinking of setting up IMP for web mail access for my users. I see the
post below from the mailing list archives, but it is dated September of
1999. Also there is a link to install instructions, but it is bad. Does
any one know the status of these RPMS, and where to find an easy set of
install instructions? Other suggestions for webmail are also very welcome.

I am planning to include imp and horde as RPMS for the Advanced Extranet
Server. Stay tuned!

Re: [expert] i810 and MDK 7.0

2000-07-14 Thread vern

Hi, while not an expert I had my i810 chipset mobo working
in Mdk 6.0, by downloading the two files at Intel's website.
There is a kernel module agpgart.o file which you need to
build, an X server file and a good info file for installing
the two in a Redhat based system. I'm running 3.3.6 XFree now
under Mdk. 7.1, but I don't know about picking out the XFree
rpm from Mdk. 7.1. I have no clue about dependicies and such.
Hope this helps a little, I'm now much of an expert.
Please excuse the Win98 useage as my "real modem" is in the shop! :-)

2000-07-14 Thread Gil Baron W0MN

Same problem here. Using that method is an anachronism in any case. All this
is easy with a Mandrake install or from KDE IF you get that far. I don't
yet. Still waiting for my cds from cheapbyte.
The downloads don't work, even though MD5SUM is good and even though I
burned at only 2x (can do 4), no change at all.
Good luck, I tried the config and seems you have to go to a 4 year course to
learn it!

Did you set the correct ttySx port in the script? What does /var/log/messages say is
going on? Did you try a PING or something? Remember that even when you have it
configured correctly, it does not dial out the minute you load pppd... it waits until
someone wants a packet.

Re: [expert] how install SO5.2

2000-07-14 Thread Fran Parker

Hi, here is the message I sent previously about installing
StarOffice 5.2...I was glad I still had it. It is meant to be
installed by the user in a single user environment like mine.
I did not install it on a server for use by other machines.

Bambi

Previous message text:

Hi Wayne,

Here is the message I sent to Pedro, about StarOffice
when I downloaded it last night ... the chmod I understand
makes the file executable, the *bin file is correct, it is the
StarOffice 5.2 setup/install file and after you chmod, you
can execute it.:

I just downloaded the 97.xx meg file for StarOffice
overnight and installed it with no problems.

I registered when I downloaded and no serial number
is needed for the free version downloaded.

Are you having trouble installing it?

In case you are having trouble, you install it as user,
after chmod 777
as su or root.

>From there it is smooth sailing ... I had to create a
user accessible directory on my /root partition since
after downloading the file I didn't have enough space
to install it in the /home directory. I did this as su, then
chown the directory to username.group and chmod
the directory chmod 777 StarOffice (which was the
name of the directory) and off I went. Real bummer
too, I should have given a whole lot more room in
my /home partition and /root partitions...now I am
down to a measly just under 200 left on my /home
partition (after I delete the StarOffice install file) and
46megs now on /root partition. I sure home that will
be OK.

When I was prompted for registration in the program,
I checked that I had already registered when downloaded.

I hope that helps some.

Um, no. This is dail-on demand. It SHOULDN'T do anything. The pppd daemon should
just run in the background (check with:
ps -ax | grep pppd
If it's not there, THEN you have a problem. Otherwise, try to ping an external server
(like ping www.linux-mandrake.com), and the connection will be brought up. If
not, you then have a problem. The connection will be brought down if the link is idle
for the specified amount of time.

BTW, as a note, for those of you that want to be able to bring down the link at any
time:
Go grab the latest pppd (search on freshmeat), and install the daemon binary from
that. Then, change the holdoff line in /etc/ppp/options to 0. Now, if you send a
SIGHUP to pppd, it will close the link, but leave the line up. If holdoff isn't 0, it
will dial back in, however (SIGHUP actually means close the link, then
reconnect). For some reason, the version of pppd that came with Mandrake 7.1 (2.3.11)
will misbehave if you set holdoff to 0 (i.e., it waits about 5 minutes then dials
in: why, I don't know). This is nice for those of you that need a way to quickly
close the connection, but want to leave the daemon running. I'd suggest a simple
setuid root app that signals pppd, and then set its group to pppusers and its
permission to 750. That makes life even easier. ^,^

Expecially Mandrake's ext2 partition.
Infact Mandrake ext2 partition have strange inode/byte ratio so
explore2fs don't see right name.
Append some tabs to files real name.

[expert] X startup problems

2000-07-14 Thread Vincent Colombo

Hey there,

My girlfriend's doing an internship at UW-Madison this summer and, as she's
staying in the dorms, I figured I'd give her my computer so she could access
email and everything while she's not at work (ok, so I just wanted to go
visit and download things at extremely fast speeds ;) ). Anyway, I went and
set up the machine, everything was working fine.

Now, however, when she attempts to log in she receives the following
message:

startup program /etc/X11/xdm/GiveConsole exited with non-zero status

Anyone able to tell me why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Vince

P.S. Sorry if anyone receives two copies of this. I sent it yesterday and
have yet to see it go through to the list.

No, you substitute the real location for what is shown in the example.

That's the /root/tmp directory that's listed, not /tmp. You're right,

If enough people ask before buying if a product is supported by Linux,
eventually the stores will catch on, and start keeping notes on which ones
are and which are not. Similarly, if enough people return products saying,
sorry, I couldn't get this to work with Linux, the manufacturers will get
the hint and see to it that their products do work with Linux.

It's a chicken and egg problem, and, just like chickens and eggs, the
answer is evolutionary. We just need to evolve the vendors by providing an
environment where Linux-friendly products are rewarded.

kheader is an initscript that creates a dummy header file in /boot if
you're running a stock mdk kernel. If you recompiled your kernel
without an mdk extension and have an older (more than say 2 months)
version of the initscripts RPM, it erroneously reports failed
(somebody left off the exit code in the script).

A very standard utility, cpio, that has existed for decades, is behaving
differently in Mandrake 7.0

If you execute a script like

cat BACKUP.LIST | cpio -ocv >BACKUP.MEDIUM 2>BACKEDUP.LIST

and everything goes well BACKUP.LIST == BACKEDUP.LIST

This indeed works until 7.0

So. whats up?

I, for one (original poster), was so exasperated I reinstalled LM7.0 and the
XFree86 version 4.0
and it works like a charm. I use some elements of 7.1 while I wait for a less
buggy new release (7.2, 8.0?).

The Viper II is unsupported by XFree86 as yet, Diamond tells you just exactly this
much about its
cards so you can write drivers

" "
Windows might have a driver written by diamond, or it might be supplied separately
with the card.
But know this: Microsoft blames 25% of its crashes on third-party drivers.

A working system after you finish installing all the third-party drivers not on the
windows disk.

You will NOT find another distro which will work with the Viper II. All of them use
XFree86 which
does not yet support the card. Xi Graphics might have a driver (check their
accelerated-X
package out), specs available at www.linuxmall.com though I recommend buying the
package somewhere
else because I have serious doubts about the abilities of EBiz enterprises to offer
decent
customer service.

Sorry, I should have asked earlier what your card was and saved you some time and
effort.

If you have perl, openssl-devel, tcp-wrappers, and gnome-devel installed
go to:

http://www.heronforge.net/~stephen/programs/openssh-2.1.0p2-1.src.rpm

I edited the spec file a little on this to be more tolerant. It has

Yes, but I'd recommend using a FAT16 partition instead. Why? Because it
does not rely on either reverse-engineered drivers nor beta-level code,
but rather uses each operating system's own filesystem drivers to access a
thouroughly understood, well-documented, and simple filesystem.

You forgot to mention that the Linux kernel now has read-write NTFS
drivers, but I still dont recommend using them on a system volume, or, in
fact, any filesystem that has data you want to keep. Keeping an extra
filesystem around for the specific purpose of transferring files may waste
a little space, but you're not endagering any critical filesystems this
way, either.

I'd suggest using NTFS for the system volume- commonly known as the "C:
drive.". NTFS is a much better performer than FAT. If you need to move
files between the operating systems, make a small, 200MB-or-so FAT
partition. Or however large you want. Anyhow, I'd definitely avoid using
FAT on an NT system volume.

2000-07-14 Thread Craig Woods

Hey Rogelio,

NT and LM will run fine together. I have several boxes doing so now.
When you install NT, it will overwrite MBR. If you have lilo here, go
into Linux first, and change to have lilo put on first Linux parition.
Then make a new boot disk so you can boot to Linux off of a floppy.
After you get NT up and running, and can get into linux with boot disc,
post this info here. I will then show you how to do a "dd" argument that
will give you an output that we can make NT's boot.ini file read at time
of booting up system. In this manner you can, at boot time, choose your
OS without using floppy any more. Good luck and, most of all, have some
fun

Rogelio,

I assume you're starting on a freshly formatted drive?

I am currently using Windows NT 4 and Linux Mandrake 7.0.  I installed
NT first on one partition and Linux Mandrake on another partition.  My
suggestion is that you install NT *first* and then Linux.  After you have
installed NT should you start the Linux installation.  Once you've
installed Linux, you have to boot into Linux, go to LinuxConf and add your NT
partition to your LILO settings.  Linux Mandrake may find it if it's a FAT
partition, but, I used the NTFS format instead.  Both work flawlessly and
I've had no trouble yet.

It's not default for security reasons. One of the best solutions is
to set the permissions on /usr/bin/cdrecord to 4710. It ships as
owned by root, group cdwriter, and SGID. The intention was,
apparently, to allow members of group cdwriter write cd's, but it
doesn't work that way. The permissions I specified allow members of
the group cdwriter to use the program as if they were root.

Just add the user(s) you want to be able to burn discs to the cdwriter
group afterward. (Note that any account logged on when the change is
made will have to log off and back on in order to be able to access
the new group)

Expecially Mandrake's ext2 partition.
Infact Mandrake ext2 partition have strange inode/byte ratio so
explore2fs don't see right name.
Append some tabs to files real name.

Re: [expert] XFree86 4.01

2000-07-14 Thread Civileme

As I recall, the release of XFree86 4.0 made it just under the wire for the 7.1 code
freeze. You will find terms not used in a standard manner here. For example, the
"beta" of development is just frozen code--nothing new to be added, but it does NOT
mean that all the in-house discoverable bugs have been found. Some beta-testers have
been bitterly critical about that but it was just the most appropriate term to use
which approximately paralleled a radically different development model. Snapshot is
snapshot--not nightly build, and it means that there was not adequate time before the
code freeze to do anything to the release--so the debugging was short. If you decide
to hang around, the terms will take on new meanings or perhaps you will invent some
terms for the folks to use which describes the development system and its aspects and
products.

It was addressed with a vengeance. Even supermounted drives will burn cds, but it
is a bad(tm) idea to leave a blank in a supermounted burner for a long period of
time--the power saver and the supermount interact to produce a kernel panic in
those circumstances.

However, if supermount is not used, the alias in /etc/conf.modules does not
identify ide-scsi and it isn't modprobed. This has been identified and will be
dealt with, I have heard from our outstanding developers.

[expert] Ethernet driver failure in 7.1

2000-07-14 Thread cjayakumar

Hi guys,

My ethernet card (LinkSys NC100 PCI Ethernet card that came with a 5-Port
Starter Kit) worked under Mandrake 6.0. I downloaded the ISO images of
Mandrake 7.1 and freshly installed it on the same machine, and the ethernet
driver does not load.

Under Mandrake 6.0, the original Tulip driver that came with the
distribution did not seem to work. (I'm not sure if the insmod of that
driver revealed unresolved symbols.) I downloaded the new Tulip driver
source rpm from http://www.scyld.com. This rpm compiled and installed
tulip.o and pci-scan.o. I had to insmod pci-scan.o first and then the
insmod of tulip.o worked. I updated the dependencies with /sbin/depmod -a,
and with the following change to /etc/conf.modules, the driver worked upon
boot.
Change to /etc/conf.modules:
alias eth0 tulip
options tulip options=0 debug=1

Now, in Mandrake 7.1, there is no pci-scan.o module. This is what happens:
[root@localhost /root]# insmod tulip
Using /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy[root@localhost /root]#

I assumed that the driver needed the IO address and/or IRQ. Specifying
those gives the following messages:
[root@localhost /root]# insmod tulip io=0xee00 irq=11
Using /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o: invalid parameter parm_io
[root@localhost /root]#
...and similarly with the IRQ.

Perchance that the Scyld driver would work, I backed up
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net to /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net2,
and then installed the Scyld rpm with the pci-scan.o in it. Insmoding
pci-scan.o revealed 11 unresolved dependencies.
c
So, my question is: given the same hardware, why is Mandrake 7.1's Tulip
driver unable to recognize the Ethernet card, while it worked with
Scyld.com's driver in Mandrake 6.0?

Jay

Now, in Mandrake 7.1, there is no pci-scan.o module. This is what happens:
[root@localhost /root]# insmod tulip
Using /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy[root@localhost /root]#

I assumed that the driver needed the IO address and/or IRQ. Specifying
those gives the following messages:
[root@localhost /root]# insmod tulip io=0xee00 irq=11
Using /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net/tulip.o: invalid parameter parm_io
[root@localhost /root]#
...and similarly with the IRQ.

Perchance that the Scyld driver would work, I backed up
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net to /lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksecure/net2,
and then installed the Scyld rpm with the pci-scan.o in it. Insmoding
pci-scan.o revealed 11 unresolved dependencies.
c
So, my question is: given the same hardware, why is Mandrake 7.1's Tulip
driver unable to recognize the Ethernet card, while it worked with
Scyld.com's driver in Mandrake 6.0?

1) Also, a program called HardDrake did not recognize that a Network card
was present on my machine?

2) And, below is the output of /proc/pci. Note the presence of the Ethernet
controller the second from last.
[root@localhost /root]# cat /proc/pci

Re: [expert] backround processes

2000-07-14 Thread Tony McGee

AFAIK you can't restrict the running of background processes and if you
could it would create more problems with legitimate processes than it would
solve. Probably the best you can do is display a login message to users
informing them that the use of eggdrops etc. are prohibited with penalties
associated. Unusual happenings can be then monitored using the system logs
and filesystem. Unfortunately no tool ever created can replace the vigilance
of a sysadmin.

Re: [expert] Installing on SCSI drive problem

2000-07-14 Thread jlemay

I'm not familiar with the adapter or driver, and the messages don't look
familiar either. However, I had major SCSI problems with 'Drake 6.1 and
7.0 that 7.1 fixed. I was using Seagate LVD drives and an Adaptec 2940U2W
adapter. Not sure how much help that will be.

Of course, check termination!

I use minicom. I crearted a special configuration file for my Cisco
routers so I could also sue the modem. You will also need the correct
cable and connector but, hopefully, that came with the router :-)

Hi.
A few questions about i810 with MDK 7.0

1) Is i810 supported by default in MDK 7.0?
2) If not,how to make it work ?
3)I got MDK 7.1 CD, which XFree (3.3.6) or 4.0 do i need to upgrade to,to
make the i810 works in my MDK 7.0 ? (I don't want to upgrade my machine to
7.1)

Thanks

Really? I had always thought it the other way around... My mistake. ^,^
