Surely a lapsus, it should be (replace user with your own login name):

for i in * ; do chown -R user:user $i ; done

Anyway, maybe you can make a one-file from them before (tar, cpio, ...)
so after you scp it and decompress it on the new server you will
probably have the "right" owner (it's quite probably as sugested that
the UID and GID will not correspond to the one on the new server and
you'll have to change them or type the line before).

Maybe someone knows how to do it directly with scp options. Good luck.

Use rsync over ssh. It'll preserve ownership of the files as well as

As an additional precaution, you might want to look into getting and using
chkrootkit. It searches your system for evidence that you've already been
hacked, and seems to check for a fairly comprehensive list of trojans, worms,
etc.

If you're serious about security, you should also look into Tripwire and AIDE
(sp?), which will make a database of your key files and can check them for
alteration on a regular basis.

If I'm reading the man page correctly, the -p option preserves the modes of
the files (e.g. rwx), not the owner. Keeping the owners could be a bit
problematic, since the owner id on one system is probably different from the
owner id on another system...

If all of the your files need to have the same owner, I would first copy them
to some empty temp directory, do a 'chown user.group -R *' in that directory,
then move them to where they need to be... Otherwise, I have no simple

(Although, it should be possible to create a script that changes the owner,
based on the directory name under home (e.g. /home/plughead.) Something
like:

  cd /home
  for i in * ; do chown $i.$i -R $i ; done

might do the trick...)

[expert] copying files with scp

2002-11-07 Thread Sebastian McDonagh
Hi guys,

Time to change over the mail server and am copying down /home to the new
server. I am currently trying to do this via scp, now i dont claim to
be any expert but from reading the man pages on scp i should be able to
use the -rp switches to 1. Copy recursively and 2. maintain file
permissions of those directories and subdir.

Anyway my problem is twofold and i would really appreciate any
assistance you guys could give.

The first thing is copying the directories over,
The command i am using is,

scp -rp X.X.X.X /home/* /home/

Now this sure gets the directory down but then they are all owned by
root and are in the root group. Now this is obviously going to be a
problem.

What am i doing wrong ? Does anyone out there know how to maintain the
permissions of the files.

The second issue is if i have the files down and they are all owned by
root and in the root group, does anyone have a script that would allow
me to change the ownership and groups of the 120 or so directorys.

The ideal i spose would be to copy the necessary home directorys without
changing the permissions in the first place.

Sorry if it is a bit rambling, would be great if someone was able to
assist.

RE: [expert] hard disk booting issue IBM PC.

2002-11-07 Thread Franki
Hi Charles...

Sorry tookl so long to respond..

I shut down the box to check the apm settings and to see if I could specify
SCSI as a boot device..

Its not even an option.. the IBM bios only has autodetect options on 4
possible ide connections..

and no boot options at all.

I am starting to think that maybe an old hdd could be hooked up to the
standard ide's to instigate a boot from the 40gig..

basically use the old drive as a fast boot disk...

can't think of what else to do...

maybe i need only put that drive in and put lilo on it..

Even though the drive is ide and the pci controller card is for ide devices,
because it is a separate controller your BIOS will address the controller as
SCSI.

Set the boot sequence in your BIOS so that it boots SCSI rather than hd.

The how too will vary some between bioses.
Some you can set per device; 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. boot device, others you
have to set as a group, i.e.BOOT: floppy/cdrom/SCSI, floppy/SCSI/cdrom
...etc. i.e.BOOT:floppy/cdrom/SCSI,floppy/SCSI/cdrom...etc.

Then your install lilo as normal.

The answer was no farther away than the README.Linux file found in your
installation of UT2003.

Q: I get the following text on my console when I run the game:
Xlib: extension "XiG-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD" missing on display ":0.0".
 Is this a problem?
A: No. This means you aren't using an X server from Xi Graphics.
That message means we're looking for the X11 extension they use to
change screen resolutions, and having a non-XiG X server, you
don't have it. THIS IS NOT A UT2003 BUG. It's not a bug at all.
Xlib prints that "error", but we handle it gracefully.

So if you are having a problem (I'm running UT2003 OK here on Mandrake 9.0),
check out the UT2003 newsgroup.

But it may be that your video card is not supported, since it must supply S3TC
support.

All nVIDIA, no Radeon (unless you have an XiG X server), and no others.

Hey Todd,

I made a slight change to the RedirectMatch clause, so that the redirects
now look like this:

  redirect /MSADC http://www.microsoft.com
  redirect /c http://www.microsoft.com
  redirect /d http://www.microsoft.com
  redirect /_mem_bin http://www.microsoft.com
  redirect /msadc http://www.microsoft.com
  RedirectMatch (.*)\(cmd|root).exe$ http://www.microsoft.com$1
  RedirectMatch ^.*\.(dll|ida).* http://www.microsoft.com$1

Do you see anything on those last two lines that look like it won't work,
will confuse something at my end, etc.? It looks to me like it should
work, but a second set of eyes is always handy when doing something like
this... :-)

Also, is there any reason to not change redirect line 4 to use
/(_mem_bin|_vti_bin) instead of just /_mem_bin like it does now? I.E., are
there any *ligitimate* direct calls to that directory, or is it only going
to be called when an infected system is trying to find another system to
infect? (I presume the line would have to be changed from "redirect" to
"RedirectMatch".)

To me, it only makes sense that since Microsoft's bad design and lazy

Re: [expert] hard disk booting issue IBM PC.

2002-11-07 Thread Brian Schroeder
Even if the BIOS can only see 8G, Linux should see and use then
entire disk quite happily. It doesn't depend on the BIOS for
that info. If you want to use windows as well, you may need to
create an initial 8G (or less) partition for it. You could then
boot the disk with no problems.

But: If you want to use your new controller card, you will need
either of 2 things (so far as I know, these are the only ways) -

1. If the BIOS supports it, tell it to boot from the SCSI device.
I know it's not SCSI, but for booting purposes the BIOS will
treat it as such. Everything will look normal once it has
booted. (I have done this on my own machine.)

2. Failing that, you will have to configure a boot floppy and
  boot off that.

[expert] troubles with ip masq'ing / forwarding - mon motha script Mdk 9.0

I am using the mon motha script on a Mandrake 9.0 box with the shorewall

'iptables -X' and set all three default chains to 'ACCEPT'. However, on the
gateway box I have default gateway set to 172.0.0.1 - now I can access the
internet from the gateway box (ping sites, etc) but not from a networked
device like my laptop although I can still log in via ssh and webmin to the
gateway (just not ping internet sites).

I am wondering if I have a defaultgw setting actually on the gateway itself
if this can interfere?

Nothing shows up in the logs - I have the script set to 'enable', etc..

I'm using a Promise ATA 133 controller in one of my machines. To get it
to boot I had to go into the motherboard BIOS and select a boot option
that *wasn't* IDE0. I'm not in front of the machine now, but this was
what it required to get working.

BTW, some of the controllers won't boot from some of the boot-floppy
emulation mode CDROMs. This doesn't apply to the HD, of course.

2002-11-07 Thread D. R. Evans
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Using MCC, I just removed the gcc 2.95.x rpms, and installed the LM 9.0 gcc
3.2 rpms (including dependencies).

Inside MCC, if I now do a search on all the packages that contain "gcc",
the only ones present are from 3.x. BUT if I do a "g++ -v" I get a message
saying that it is reading from ".../2.95.3/specs" and that the version is a
2.95 version.

I sort-of hopeful (but doubtful) that actually everything is OK except that
g++ is somehow reading incorrect version information from somewhere. Does
anyone know how gcc determines what version number to print out? There is a
/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i586-mandrake-linux-gnu/3.2 directory, and it seems to be
properly populated.

[expert] hard disk booting issue IBM PC.

2002-11-07 Thread Franki
Hi guys,

I've finially decided to fix an issue that has bothered me for ages,, I'm
just not sure its possible..

so I figured I'd ask you guys.

Anyway, I've got a 300PL IBM PC.

Its got a 40gig hard disk in it..

by itself the bios doesn't recognise the drive (see's it as an 8gig).. so I
bought a PCI controller card and plugged it in.

after hooking it all up, the card's bios see's the drive and reports its
stats perfectly..

but I still can't boot from it... I still need to use a boot floppy.

I've tried installing lilo in different places with different configs, but I
am not sure what else I can do.

Todd,

  RedirectMatch (.*\.exe\?) http://www.microsoft.com$1

since all attempts contain ".exe?" -- and this would allow a site to
continue serving *.exe files without redirecting all those to M$...

Besides, shouldn't "\cmd.exe" really be "cmd\.exe"? Also, correct me if
I'm wrong; but don't we want the *entire* path to be appended to the M$

Thanks everyone for your help - I've finally learned how to recompile my
kernel Ya-hoo!!!

The only problem I had on the last round was that lilo choked because make
install chose to long of a name for the "label" tag in lilo.conf.
I fixed that and everything else went great!

Thanks again everyone! Mike

I'd run an nmap scan of my box. do urpmi nmap --fuzzy to find out all
the rpms available here (nmap is nmap but there are some different gui's
available) Run the scan and if you see something open that you don't
want open, close it. The biggest reason this is useful is because it's
the same technique the black hats use to find out where and how to
attack.

yeah, Todd, should make that part of the default mdk apache...

I found a few different ways to achieve this sort of thing by talking to
people, and reading the several posts from your guys...

Most do something like this... but in a way.. if Mandake did this by
default, they might be a legal target because they would just have
facilitated a dos attack on M$

gotta remember to add some codered code to that... would this be right?

Hi Mike,
I wouldn't recommend deleting the default installed modules. I always just
change the makefile extraversion and that leaves the new modules installed in
their own directory. This way if your reboot fails then at least you still
have the originals to fall back on. If you've already deleted them you might
try forceing a reinstallation of the mandrake kernel to get them back.

On your original problem of mkinitrd, did you include TCP/IP networking(under
Networking options)? I think I'm correct in saying that this contains the
loop device mentioned in Documentation/initrd.txt that is required for
initrd. Having said that, I manage to boot my kernel without initrd (I have
removed the line in the section of lilo.conf "initrd=/boot/initrd..." from
where I boot my kernel). I just made sure that IDE/UDMA and ext3 drivers that
I use for my root disk partition were compiled into the kernel. It seems to
work fine for me and both simplifies and speeds up the boot process.

If you can get your kernel compiled with whatever drivers are needed to mount
the root file system and if you can install any modules(after adjusting the
makefile extraversion to suit) with make modules_install, then perhaps you
could just copy the bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz-whatever along with the system
map and then make manual entries in /etc/lilo.conf to boot that kernel and
forget about an initrd entry. Don't forget to run lilo after all this to
update the mbr

As far as I understand, initrd's main purpose is to enable the loading of
whatever modules are required to mount the root file system. If those are
already compiled into the kernel then basically initrd is not required to
mount the root file system.

Hope this helps,
Robin

You shouldn't really delete lib/modules/KERNEL_VERSION, and is not
necessary if you're changing the EXTRAVERSION flag.

InnoGear has a new one out, 128MB with LCD, Duex mp302, in the size of a
key chain, plugs into the system and look like a USB HD (pop off the end
cap and there is a full size USB connector, no cable needed). From the
spec I read, if this is the case, this should work with Mdk and Linux
fine.

Hi,

Try running it from my directions, it will automatically
rename the new kernel to -XXcustom. You will end up with a
complete new kernel and all the drakboot entries. I have
tried using your approach and it never left me with a
usable system. The method I listed is what I have been
using in travels in cooker land and it has never failed me
yet. Give it a try.

2002-11-07 Thread Michael Holt
Hey Simon,
This is what I did:

cd to /usr/src/2.4.19-xx

make mrproper (didn't bother saving .config since I
hadn't put anything in it yet.)
edit makefile changing extraversion to 'mikescustom'
delete /lib/modules/2.4.19-xx (as instructed to if you're not patching
your kernel)
make menuconfig (load /boot/config)
make dep
make clean bzImage modules
make modules_install install

I'm think that since I'm changing the extraversion entry in the makefile
that it should create a new modules directory under /lib/modules and that
I may not have to delete the old one - at least then I should be able to
do the work around, which is 'modprobe loop'. I tried restarting service
devfsd last night, but there was no rescuing from where I was at, so I
reloaded mdk 9.0 and I'm planning to try rebuilding again today. Any
thoughts on that plan of action? I would love any suggestions.

Thanks, Mike

Re: [expert] Portable MP3 & MD players?

2002-11-07 Thread Michael Holt
I have an older Nomad player (mp3) from creative which takes 128MB smart
media cards. I used to look around on the net for others that might be
using it under linux and I found one person with a project that never
really made it very far. Rio seems to have some kind of kernel support,
but that's the only one I've seen for linux. My 'brainstorm' was that
since my smart media card is removeable, I would just plug a card reader
into the computer and transfer files like you would a floppy for example.
I've got that plugged into my imac for now because I already had a card
reader that worked on it and I didn't feel like buying another one that
was linux ready. Anyway, my suggestion is this; before you buy, find out
what kind of media it uses and if you can spend $20 on a linux type media
reader for it - it's easier than using that screwy software that comes
bundled anyway.

Another note; quite a few mp3 players are shipping with hard drives now -
one in particular which I can't remember the name of, doubles as an
external usb hard drive. Just make an entry in /etc/fstab and you should
be able to transfer files just like any other external drive.

Take a look around CompUSA (or any computer store for that matter) and
you'll see what I'm talking about.

Re: [expert] kernel recompile

2002-11-07 Thread Simon Ree
Did you try to rebuild your kernel from source? I had no
luck at all on my laptop till I followed this procedure.

/usr/src/kernel-2.4.19-Xmdk/

save .config
make mrproper
restore .config if you want
make *config
make bzImage modules
make modules_install install

Should allways work. Try it. Also, if your laptop support
acpi, download the new -18mdk kernel and enable acpi
support. Seems to be working for me.

[expert] Portable MP3 & MD players?

2002-11-07 Thread Mark
As I am thinking of buying one and don't want to waste my money on one
that won't work in linux. Does anyone know which portable MP3 & MD
players work in mandrake?

There seems to be a lack of information about which ones work. As far
as I can find not many r compatible.

I was thinking of maybe a Sony MD player (MZN707S) or Iriver MP3 (IFP-180).

As far as I can find out none of the recent models work as they need
specific drivers built into the kernel for the device which are not
available yet. In other words they aren't simply plug & play usb devices.

Any help or suggestion will be appreciated.

Mark

NMAP, by various means: ping scanning, syn scanning, fin scanning, etc, of
single, multiple, or whole blocks of IP addresses.

"nmap -sS -vv -O -P 100.200.300.*" (syn scan) or

is there any linux app that can do the same as CheckPoint,

its a linux box, so its not effected by any of that, but I am sick of the

Hi all,
There is  a problem with the gdm and consolehelper program that I have been investigated, but I cannot figure out what it's going on. The symptoms are the following.
If you use gdm as your session manager, then  consolehelper stops displaying the dialog about root entering root  passwd.  for example yo type as a normal user
%shutdown
The funny thing is that if you use kdm or xdm everything works properly(for example typeing shutdown prompts for a root passwd). Even starting sessions with startx make it works (I have to say that working with kde it is not a problem because it uses kdesu program).
I have been looking for a solution but I don't understand the problem So the question is what have to do the gdm with the session? Probably it is a problem of  the pam configuration but I cannot devise the complete scene

Yes, an intruder can easily "hack" your machine via FTP, especially if you
aren't very dilligent about applying the latest patches.

> have the ssh server running and that's all i need,

So, why are you using FTP?? Stick with sftp, if this is for your own
personal
use, or the use of a small group of people. Even if it's for a large group
of people, you should give it serious consideration...

Someone looking for you, in particular, might have a hard time, but that's
not
the problem. The problem is that there are many-many s'kiddies out there,
who are constantly portscanning whole blocks of IP addresses. They don't
have to know (and generally don't care) who you are--they simply find an
open
FTP port (on _your_ machine) and "have (hack?) at it"...
