He went on to make a number of comments about the environmental problems that would be created by putting that many additional people on such a small island. It appeared obvious to me that this was what he was referring to. Tip is a verb often used metaphorically with regard to the point at which an environment begins to deteriorate irretrievably (including in the context of global warming). Then I went and looked him up on the Web. His Wikipedia page mentions the incident and quotes his spokesman: I wasn't suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over. I was using a metaphor to say that with the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents an additional 80,000 people during peak construction to the port on the tiny island with a population of 180,000 could be a tipping point which would adversely affect the island's fragile ecosystem and over burden its already overstressed infrastructure. Having traveled to Guam last year, I saw firsthand how this beautiful but vulnerable island is already overburdened, and I was simply voicing my concerns that the addition of that many people could tip the delicate balance and do harm to Guam. Wikipedia introduces the quote by saying, In what may have been an attempt at damage control... Well, of course it was an attempt at damage control, but only of the damage created by the intentional misunderstanding of his remark promoted by people of ill will. There's no reason to think it wasn't exactly what he had in mind at the time. The admiral he was questioning seems to have taken it that way, chuckling at the jocular metaphor. He didn't seem surprised or embarrassed by it (as he most likely would have been had he taken it as having been meant literally) and went on to address the congressman's concerns about overpopulation of the island. FWIW, Johnson is a practicing Buddhist, one of only two in Congress. The example of certain people on FFL to the contrary, I'm not sure you can be a total nitwit and also be a practicing Buddhist.

[FairfieldLife] For Mr. Do-Believer; Deficits to surge!
CBO report: Debt will rise to 90% of GDP. By David M. Dickson http://www.washingtontimes.com/staff/david-m-dickson/ President Obama's fiscal 2011 budget will generate nearly $10 trillion in cumulative budget deficits over the next 10 years, $1.2 trillion more than the administration projected, and raise the federal debt to 90 percent of the nation's economic output by 2020, the Congressional Budget Office reported Thursday. In its 2011 budget, which the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released Feb. 1, the administration projected a 10-year deficit total of $8.53 trillion. After looking it over, CBO said in its final analysis, released Thursday, that the president's budget would generate a combined $9.75 trillion in deficits over the next decade. An additional $1.2 trillion in debt dumped on [GDP] to our children makes a huge difference, said Brian Riedl, a budget analyst at the conservative Heritage Foundation. That represents an additional debt of $10,000 per household above and beyond the federal debt they are already carrying. The federal public debt, which was $6.3 trillion ($56,000 per household) when Mr. Obama entered office amid an economic crisis, totals $8.2 trillion ($72,000 per household) today, and it's headed toward $20.3 trillion (more than $170,000 per household) in 2020, according to CBO's deficit estimates. That figure would equal 90 percent of the estimated gross domestic product in 2020, up from 40 percent at the end of fiscal 2008. By comparison, America's debt-to-GDP ratio peaked at 109 percent at the end of World War II, while the ratio for economically troubled Greece hit 115 percent last year. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2010/mar/26/cbos-2020-vision-debt-wi\ ll-rise-to-90-of-gdp/

policy, said Diane Lim Rogers, the chief economist for the Concord Coalition, a nonpartisan budget watchdog group. They're now Obama policy. Leaving Bush-era tax cuts in place for all but the top 5 percent of taxpayers would cost the Treasury $2 trillion over 10 years, she said. The cost of paying interest on the swelling national debt, much of it held by foreign central banks, also drives up the debt by about $1.3 trillion over 10 years. That's almost twice as much as the $700 billion Wall Street rescue package, which passed last year amid great controversy. Congressional committees will begin writing their own versions of the budget next week. Moderate Democrats already are uniting to promote budget discipline in what could become a challenge to Obama's agenda. Sixteen Democrats, led by Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh, have formed the Moderate Dems Working Group, and have begun meeting to discuss how to pare spending. There are a lot of like-minded Democrats concerned about spending in the budget. We're not anti-administration, but we want everyone to recognize some of us are fiscally conservative, said Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb. In the House, the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of 47 centrist Democrats, drew up a set of principles this week to guide the budget, emphasizing a need to reduce spending. Its biggest push is to hold nondefense discretionary spending, which Obama would increase by about 14 percent next year, to the level of inflation. Over the past 12 months, consumer prices are up about 0.2 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Younger moderates bring a generational perspective. I am one of the few (lawmakers) who may actually have to end up paying for the deficits we're currently running up, said Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Va., a 34-year-old freshman. http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2009/03/20/64528/cbo-obamas-budget-would-dou\ ble.html#ixzz0jJPH8g9R http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2009/03/20/64528/cbo-obamas-budget-would-doub\ le.html --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, BillyG wgm4u@ wrote: CBO report: Debt will rise to 90% of GDP. In 2000, the publishing company Yogi Impressions was born. I actually had no intention to enter the publishing business. It was just that we had a hard time finding an appropriate publisher for my motherâs book on her visual experience of the awakening of the Kundalini. We finally decided to self-publish her book; my background in advertising gave me the confidence as I was familiar with the process of designing and printing. After we brought out her book, we had no plans to publish any more books. My journey with Eckhart and Ramesh started, almost simultaneously, around this time. We soon found ourselves publishing Eckhartâs and Rameshâs books. The next two titles we brought out were The Power of Now (Indian edition), and Rameshâs bookThe Ultimate Understanding. My sister Nikki had read The Power of Now around the time it had just released in the West. The book had a tremendous impact on her and she met Eckhart, almost immediately, when she was in Vancouver on a business trip. She was keen to bring Eckhartâs message to India and we ended up publishing the Indian edition of the same, through a series of synchronistic events. Eckhart had mentioned to Nikki early on that âThe Power of Now will be the beginning of an adventure for Gautam.â Thanks to him, and the success of his books, we were soon able to publish books of some other spiritual masters as well. On a personal level, during my lifeâs spiritual journey, I have had the good fortune of meeting some wonderful beings, over the years, whom I would not have normally met had it not been for spiritual publishing. Eckhart was right - it was the start of an adventure that still continues. With Ramesh, his editor at the time informed me he was looking for a publisher to bring out his new book. I said that, although I did not have much experience as such in publishing, I would be more than happy to help though they probably would be better off with an experienced publisher. Nevertheless, a meeting was arranged with Ramesh. The first question he asked me was if I had read any of his earlier books. I was in a spot! A bit embarrassed, I hesitatingly replied, âNone!â I thought that was the end of that - I would politely be shown the door. Between most of them, up to saasmitaa, is an asaMprajñaata stage of samaadhi, or stuff. So, why couldn't there be stages of caturthaH praaNaayaamaH? According to Bhojadeva, caturthaH is stambha-ruupo gativicchedaH (scil. praaNasya?); Vyaasa explains it to be gatyaabhaavaH (praaNasya?). Patañjali sez that the ordinary praaNaayaama is desha-kaala-saMjñaabhiH paridRSTo diirgha-suukSmaH and the Fourth is baahyaabhyantara-viSayaakSepii. With all due respect, the stages you mentioned ARE indications of the withdrawal of the prana. Once the prana (psycho-energetic power) is withdrawn to the Sahasrar chakra, congratulations, you've transcended fully for the first time. Unless you go to long rounding courses it could take a million years for this to happen according to MMY (Fuiggi, Italy). People often confuse prana with breath, the breath however is merely a biproduct of the rapidly moving prana (life, energy) within and around the subtle body. That is why when one practices pranayama (breathing exercises) one can 'control' the prana by controlling it's most external manifestation. Additionally, once you can control the prana and move it up through or into the 7th door, (primarily through concentration or passive control of the mind as in TM), you have fully withdrawn the prana and have achieved Nirvikalpa Samadhi, the highest Samadhi or ecstasy. I hope this answers your question..

But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. So they went back and did as Moses (and presumably God) instructed, killing everyone except for the virgins. [FairfieldLife] Global warming rears it's ugly head once again!
By KARL RITTER, Associated Press WriterKarl Ritter, Associated Press Writer Thu Mar 4, 6:45 pm ET STOCKHOLM Dozens of ships including a passenger ferry with nearly 1,000 people on board were trapped Friday in heavy pack ice in the Baltic Sea off Sweden's east coast, officials said. Ice breakers were trying to free the ferry Amorella and two cargo ships stuck at the edge of an archipelago northeast of Stockholm, while rescue helicopters and military hovercraft were on standby to evacuate passengers if needed. Gale-force winds were hampering the effort, the Swedish Maritime Administration said. As soon as they break the ice, it freezes over again, sea rescue spokesman Peter Lindquist said. He said no one was hurt and there were no immediate plans to evacuate the ships. The Maritime Administration said the Amorella had 753 passengers and 190 crew on board. The 10-deck ship belongs to Viking Line, which operates Baltic Sea cruises between Sweden and Finland. The other ships stuck in the area were the roll-on-roll-off ferry Sea Wind with 32 people and the Regal Star, a cargo ship with 56 people on board. Three other ferries that got stuck in the ice were able to break free earlier Thursday. One of those ships, the Finnfellow, collided lightly with the Amorella when the ice pressed the two ships together, but there was no major damage to either ship, Lindquist said. Just some paint that was scratched off, he said. A total of about 50 ships were stuck in ice along Sweden's eastern seaboard, said Johny Lindvall, who manages the maritime administration's ice breaker service. Heavy ice cover is not uncommon further north, but the ice rarely gets thick enough in the Stockholm archipelago to trap powerful passenger ferries like the Amorella. There's no danger for the passengers as long as there's food and drink on board, Lindvall told The Associated Press. Mats Nystrom, a passenger on the Amorella, told Swedish broadcaster SVT that there was no panic on the ship. The atmosphere is calm so there is no danger in that sense, said Nystrom, who is a sports presenter for the network. He said the most dramatic event had been when the two ships touched. Suddenly in the loudspeakers there's a voice saying that all passengers must immediately move to the front. Of course at that moment the passengers got worried and wondered what was happening, Nystrom said. The maritime administration said the ships had ignored warnings about the icy conditions. Normally we can handle this type of obstacle, Viking Line CEO Jan Karstrom told SVT. But in this case the wind is unfortunate. It's blowing toward land and it means that (the ice) is packed more and more against land. Three Swedish icebreakers were trying to free the ship. Finland also dispatched an ice breaker to help out, said Benny Paulsson from a maritime rescue center on Finland's southwest coast.

[FairfieldLife] God was one, but wanted to become many.
God was One, but He wanted to become many. You cannot enjoy a game with only one person. If you want to play any game, you will need more players. God originated Himself out of His own Silence in order to divinely enjoy the Cosmic Game. If we go deep within, we see that we are only taking a conscious part in God's Cosmic Game. We see that we are not the doers; God is the Doer. We are only His instruments. God is One, but He felt that He wanted to enjoy Himself, to fulfil Himself in millions of shapes and forms. He felt that being One, He was not fully satisfied. Why should He be satisfied with only being the One Infinite? He can also be the multitudinous finite. God is omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent. If He is omnipotent, then why should He not become like an ant, an infinitely tiny creature? Because of His omnipotent Power, we think of God as something very great or very vast. But just because God is omniscient and omnipotent, He can also be inside the finite. In this way, God is playing His eternal Game in and through you, through me, through all human beings. God is infinite, but He houses Himself in each tiny child. Here in the finite, He wants to enjoy Himself and play the tune of the Infinite. Only then does He get the greatest joy. It is in the finite that we are aspiring to achieve the Infinite. Again, the Infinite gets the greatest joy by making itself as tiny as possible. Finite and infinite: to our outer eyes they seem to be opposites, but in God's Eye they are one. The finite and the Infinite always go together; the one complements the other. The finite wants to reach the absolute Highest, which is the Infinite. The Infinite wants to manifest itself in and through the finite. Then the game is complete. Otherwise it will be only a one-sided game. There will be no joy, no achievement, no fulfilment. In and through the Infinite, the finite is singing its song of realisation. And in and through the finite, the Infinite is singing its song of manifestation. (Anonymous)

[FairfieldLife] The 'bow' of meditation and the importance of posture.
If you look at an Xray of a healthy spine you'll notice how closely it resembles that of an archers bow, when sitting properly this is the optimum posture (or asana) for meditation, especially when you want to raise Shakti to her mate Shiva; an advanced state of meditation. Arjuna and his bow, as mentioned in the Bhagavad Gita, is symbolic of the spine. When Arjuna took up his bow it meant to imply he assumed the lotus posture of meditation, where the spine is kept straight, and began to meditate. Slouching during meditation cuts off the vital flow of prana and renders meditation less effective and/or leads to sleep. SBS meditated in the Lotus posture.

[FairfieldLife] The objective of Meditation.
Whether it's a form of japa meditation such as TM or a form of concentration as in Kriya Yoga the objective is to *move the prana up the spine*. In TM the objective is achieved by effortless control of the mind, in Kriya Yoga it is the direct control of the prana using concentration. Consciousness is the 'rider' of prana; effect prana=effect consciousness. As the prana goes up the spine the consciousness or jiva does likewise giving rise to astral phenomenon such as bells, harps, buzzing and other sounds associated with each chakra, which are the sounds of the mechanics of each chakra. When the prana reaches the 6th chakra, the jiva or soul experiences the first state of Enlighenment or Savikalpa Samadhi as MMY himself says in his lecture on kundalini.

The loss of three major companies has dealt a blow to the now 28-member group and further dims prospects for the cap-and-trade bill that passed the House last summer and is awaiting action in the Senate. ConocoPhillips and BP said that USCAP has served its purpose and that they prefer to pursue their interests independently. Conoco and BP pulled out Monday, Caterpillar last week. Conoco and BP cited concerns about the effect that proposed climate legislation might have on the oil refining business. Conoco chief executive James J. Mulva said in a statement that the current bill left domestic refineries unfairly penalized versus international competition. The oil giants also want to do more to promote natural gas, which has become more abundant because of recent developments in the exploitation of shale gas and emits half as much greenhouse gas as coal does. The legislation adopted by the House included benefits for coal producers and coal-fired power plants in an effort to secure the votes of key lawmakers. Many natural gas producers think that more should be done for them. USCAP said it has added three corporate members in the past seven months, most recently Honeywell in October. AES and Alstom joined last July. Our mission is unchanged, USCAP spokesman Tad Segal said. But BP spokesman Ronnie Chappell said, We think the organization has accomplished what it was intended to do. It has established a broad, principle-based framework for climate-change legislation. With the completion of that blueprint, that work was done. In fact it is said that Guru Dev would not give out a mantra without knowing of the devotee's preference for a particular god. Seems to me that the process of 'transcendence' is not dependent on the use of a mantra but upon the abandonment of thought. I suspect that many successfully 'transcend' without ever getting initiated, just sitting still and letting go of thought can do it. *Vibration* is the essence of bija mantra, whether TM or otherwise (as in Hong Sau or Hamsa). By repeating or setting up this vibration within your mind you are attracting that vibration or Devata (Devatas are nothing but sound vibrations animating the Universe, their essence is bliss). By striking one tuning fork all the tuning forks in the general vicinity attuned to that frequency will vibrate as well, this is what Mantra meditation is, IMO. Through affinity, one is attracted to a particular vibration or formless devata and in time that devata can appear to you in ANY form. So Mantras would be an invaluable asset for meditation, IMO. By repeating the mantra you are attracting the Devata or Bliss.

Patanjali mentions the 'pranava', but does not state that it is 'om'. AUM is not, stictly speaking, a 'bija' mantra. AUM isn't mentioned in the Yoga Sutras nor in the Rig Veda. So, Patanjali doesn't say anything about the 'TM' bija mantras and where they came from. I also don't think Patanjali taught TM type meditation, He apparently taught *Concentration* (Dharana) as a means of controlling the prana, a much more difficult but volitional process, one used by the great Paramahansa Yogananda. TM is a much more passive process, but simpler for most people. I've compared Katz's translation with Swami Prabhupada's word for word translations and they are near the same. There are some question that are not answered in Patanjalis' Yoga Sutra. For example, Patanjali doesn't say anything about the 'bija mantras' used in TM, and where the bija mantras come from. maharishi didn't want tm people to read the vedic literature in english... The Maharishi, with help from Vernon Katz, translated the Bhagavad Gita into English. In the Maharishi's TM-Sidhi Program, Patanjali's 'flying sutra' is repeated in English.

TM indirectly controls the body by influencing the mind and brings about what Swami Yogananda calls 'Conscious Sleep' but this is just the first state of meditation, if you're interested further read his book entitled The Science of Religion page 51 under The Meditational Method and The Scientific Method or Yoga, I think he describes TM very well in the meditational method. Using Kriya Yoga one learns to consciously die..and return, as you may already know. If and when meditation is taught outside of a religious context, without the use of a puja or magic prayers, I suspect that science will show that it is not only easy and effective, but will concern itself with why it had been overlooked for so long. And it will probably blame those who described meditation as difficult and those who asserted it took many years to learn and practise. --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, BillyG wgm4u@ wrote: --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Premanand premanandpaul@ wrote: TM is a much more passive process, but simpler for most people. And the effect of that silence is deeply refreshing.. Oh but then you know I guess. The main thing is that people are not put off by this 'difficult' label which for so long has kept people from finding the stark simplicity and fulfillingness of meditation. TM IS easy, because it's a passive process, recommended by Yogis down through time, but it's not the BEST way according to Swami Yogananda. Direct control of the Prana is more direct apparently, pranayama is the key to transcending or ascending the chakras which is the only way to enlightenment. The seven doors must be opened and the spinal fire kundalini (shakti) must be awakened to ascend to Shiva the seventh Chakra. You can meditate all you want but until you actually awaken kundalini you are merely experiencing peace, which is good but not the final aim of Yoga.

Colleagues say that the reason Professor Phil Jones has refused Freedom of Information requests is that he may have actually lost the relevant papers. Professor Jones told the BBC yesterday there was truth in the observations of colleagues that he lacked organisational skills, that his office was swamped with piles of paper and that his record keeping is `not as good as it should be'. The data is crucial to the famous `hockey stick graph' used by climate change advocates to support the theory. Professor Jones also conceded the possibility that the world was warmer in medieval times than now suggesting global warming may not be a man-made phenomenon. And he said that for the past 15 years there has been no `statistically significant' warming. The admissions will be seized on by sceptics as fresh evidence that there are serious flaws at the heart of the science of climate change and the orthodoxy that recent rises in temperature are largely man-made. Professor Jones has been in the spotlight since he stepped down as director of the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit after the leaking of emails that sceptics claim show scientists were manipulating data. The raw data, collected from hundreds of weather stations around the world and analysed by his unit, has been used for years to bolster efforts by the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to press governments to cut carbon dioxide emissions. Discussing the interview, the BBC's environmental analyst Roger Harrabin said he had spoken to colleagues of Professor Jones who had told him that his strengths included integrity and doggedness but not record-keeping and office tidying. Mr Harrabin, who conducted the interview for the BBC's website, said the professor had been collating tens of thousands of pieces of data from around the world to produce a coherent record of temperature change. That material has been used to produce the `hockey stick graph' which is relatively flat for centuries before rising steeply in recent decades. According to Mr Harrabin, colleagues of Professor Jones said `his office is piled high with paper, fragments from over the years, tens of thousands of pieces of paper, and they suspect what happened was he took in the raw data to a central database and then let the pieces of paper go because he never realised that 20 years later he would be held to account over them'. Asked by Mr Harrabin about these issues, Professor Jones admitted the lack of organisation in the system had contributed to his reluctance to share data with critics, which he regretted. Asked about whether he lost track of data, Professor Jones said: `There is some truth in that. He may not want it, or need it, but, it's required!! :-) Although, I think he wants it, as he is constantly seeking us through the still small voice of conscience, guiding us, back to him: I FLED Him, down the nights and down the days; I fled Him, down the arches of the years; I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways Of my own mind; and in the mist of tears I hid from Him, and under running laughter. By Dean Nelson in New Delhi Published: 3:47PM GMT 04 Feb 2010 Comments 130 | Comment on this article Everest from the summit of Kala Patar Gokyo Nepal Himalaya: India forms new climate change body Scientists believe it could take more than 300 years for the HImalayan glaciers to disappear Photo: ALAMY The move is a significant snub to both the IPCC and Dr Pachauri as he battles to defend his reputation following the revelation that his most recent climate change report included false claims that most of the Himalayan glaciers would melt away by 2035. Scientists believe it could take more than 300 years for the glaciers to disappear. The body and its chairman have faced growing criticism ever since as questions have been raised on the credibility of their work and the rigour with which climate change claims are assessed. Related Articles * Global cooling hits Al Gore's home * Global warming and a tale of two planets * The eco-loons are appalled by India's super-cheap Tata Nano. I think it's brilliant * Barack Obama faces 'revolution' if he imposes tough carbon targets, warns IPCC * Despite the hot air, the Antarctic is not warming up In India the false claims have heightened tensions between Dr Pachauri and the government, which had earlier questioned his glacial melting claims. In Autumn, its environment minister Mr Jairam Ramesh said while glacial melting in the Himalayas was a real concern, there was evidence that some were actually advancing despite global warming. Dr Pachauri had dismissed challenges like these as based on voodoo science, but last night Mr Ramesh effectively marginalized the IPC chairman even further. He announced the Indian government will established a separate National Institute of Himalayan Glaciology to monitor the effects of climate change on the world's `third ice cap', and an `Indian IPCC' to use `climate science' to assess the impact of global warming throughout the country. There is a fine line between climate science and climate evangelism. I am for climate science. I think people misused [the] IPCC report, [the] IPCC doesn't do the original research which is one of the weaknesses they just take published literature and then they derive assessments, so we had goof-ups on Amazon forest, glaciers, snow peaks.
[FairfieldLife] And yet ANOTHER 'error' in IPCC report!
The Netherlands http://topics.breitbart.com/the+Netherlands/ has asked the UN climate change http://topics.breitbart.com/Climate+Change/ panel to explain an inaccurate claim in a landmark 2007 report that more than half the country was below sea level, the Dutch government said Friday. According to the Dutch authorities, only 26 percent of the country is below sea level, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC http://topics.breitbart.com/IPCC/ ) will be asked to account for its figures, environment ministry spokesman Trimo Vallaart http://topics.breitbart.com/Trimo+Vallaart/ told AFP. http://topics.breitbart.com/AFP/ The incident could cause further embarrassment for the IPCC, http://topics.breitbart.com/IPCC/ which recently admitted a claim in the same report that global warming could melt Himalayan glaciers by 2035 was wrong. IPCC http://topics.breitbart.com/IPCC/ experts calculated that 55 percent of the Netherlands http://topics.breitbart.com/the+Netherlands/ was below sea level by adding the area below sea level -- 26 percent -- to the area threatened by river flooding -- 29 percent -- Vallaart said. They should have been clearer, Vallaart said, adding that the Dutch office for environmental planning, an IPCC http://topics.breitbart.com/IPCC/ partner, had exact figures. Correcting the error had been on the agenda several times but had never actually happened, Vallaart said. The spokesman said he regretted the fact that proper procedure was not followed and said it should not be left to politicians to check the IPCC's http://topics.breitbart.com/IPCC/ numbers.

Look for the snow to wind down from west to east late this afternoon and early evening putting the final touches on this historic event. Widespread totals of a foot to over two feet have been reported in portions of southern Pennsylvania, West Virginia, northern Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, southern New Jersey and the District of Columbia. Localized amounts have topped 30 inches. As the low pushes off the coast it will continue to strengthen which will result in very strong winds near and along the coast. Gusts of 40 to 50 miles per hour will be likely along the coasts from the Tidewater of Virginia north to the Jersey shore. Snow and gusty winds will contribute to low visibilities and near-blizzard conditions in some areas. The winds will also serve up high surf which will lead to beach erosion and areas of coastal flooding from Atlantic City southward to the Carolina coast.

Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research. In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report's chapter on Asia, said: `It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action. `It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.' Dr Lal's admission will only add to the mounting furore over the melting glaciers assertion, which the IPCC was last week forced to withdraw because it has no scientific foundation. According to the IPCC's statement of principles, its role is `to assess on a comprehensive, objective, open and transparent basis, scientific, technical and socio-economic information IPCC reports should be neutral with respect to policy'. The claim that Himalayan glaciers are set to disappear by 2035 rests on two 1999 magazine interviews with glaciologist Syed Hasnain, which were then recycled without any further investigation in a 2005 report by the environmental campaign group WWF. It was this report that Dr Lal and his team cited as their source. The WWF article also contained a basic error in its arithmetic. A claim that one glacier was retreating at the alarming rate of 134 metres a year should in fact have said 23 metres the authors had divided the total loss measured over 121 years by 21, not 121. Last Friday, the WWF website posted a humiliating statement recognising the claim as `unsound', and saying it `regrets any confusion caused'. Dr Lal said: `We knew the WWF report with the 2035 date was grey literature [material not published in a peer-reviewed journal]. But it was never picked up by any of the authors in our working group, nor by any of the more than 500 external reviewers, by the governments to which it was sent, or by the final IPCC review editors.' In fact, the 2035 melting date seems to have been plucked from thin air. Professor Graham Cogley, a glacier expert at Trent University in Canada, who began to raise doubts in scientific circles last year, said the claim multiplies the rate at which glaciers have been seen to melt by a factor of about 25. `My educated guess is that there will be somewhat less ice in 2035 than there is now,' he said. `But there is no way the glaciers will be close to disappearing. It doesn't seem to me that exaggerating the problem's seriousness is going to help solve it.' One of the problems bedevilling Himalayan glacier research is a lack of reliable data. But an authoritative report published last November by the Indian government said: `Himalayan glaciers have not in any way exhibited, especially in recent years, an abnormal annual retreat.' When this report was issued, Raj Pachauri, the IPCC chairman, denounced it as `voodoo science'. Having been forced to apologise over the 2035 claim, Dr Pachauri blamed Dr Lal, saying his team had failed to apply IPCC procedures. It was an accusation rebutted angrily by Dr Lal. `We as authors followed them to the letter,' he said. `Had we received information that undermined the claim, we would have included it.' However, an analysis of those 500-plus formal review comments, to be published tomorrow by the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF), the new body founded by former Chancellor Nigel Lawson, suggests that when reviewers did raise issues that called the claim into question, Dr Lal and his colleagues simply ignored them. For example, Hayley Fowler of Newcastle University, suggested that their draft did not mention that Himalayan glaciers in the Karakoram range are growing rapidly, citing a paper published in the influential journal Nature. In their response, the IPCC authors said, bizarrely, that they were `unable to get hold of the suggested references', but would `consider' this in their final version. They failed to do so. The Japanese government commented that the draft did not clarify what it meant by stating that the likelihood of the glaciers disappearing by 2035 was `very high'. `What is the confidence level?' it asked. The

Louise Gray, Environment Correspondent - 16 Jun 2009 [Homosexual behaviour widespread in animals according to new study] Dolphins have been known engage in same-sex interactions to facilitate group bonding Photo: GETTY The pairing of same sex couples had previously been observed in more than 1,000 species including penguins, dolphins and primates. However, in the latest study the authors claim the phenomenon is not only widespread but part of a necessary biological adaptation for the survival of the species. They found that on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, almost a third of the Laysan albatross population is raised by pairs of two females because of the shortage of males. Through these 'lesbian' unions, Laysan albatross are flourishing. Their existence had been dwindling before the adaptation was noticed. Other species form same-sex bonds for other reasons, they found. Dolphins have been known engage in same-sex interactions to facilitate group bonding while male-male pairings in locusts killed off the weaker males. A pair of gay penguins recently hatched an egg at a German zoo after being given the egg that had been rejected by its biological parents by keepers. Writing in Trends in Ecology Evolution, Dr Nathan Bailey, an evolutionary biologist at California University, said previous studies have failed to consider the evolutionary consequences of homosexuality. He said same homosexual behaviour was often a product of natural selection to further the survival of the species. Dr Bailey said: It's clear same-sex sexual behaviour extends far beyond the well-known examples that dominate both the scientific and popular literature for example, bonobos, dolphins, penguins and fruit flies. Same-sex behaviours courtship, mounting or parenting are traits that may have been shaped by natural selection, a basic mechanism of evolution that occurs over successive generations, he said. But our review of studies also suggests that these same-sex behaviours might act as selective forces in and of themselves. http://snipurl.com/u5j9y [www_telegraph_co_uk] See Also: 1,500 animal species practice homosexuality http://www.news-medical.net/news/2006/10/23/20718.aspx

What we could do is restrict the size of corporations to 200 people. Beyond that the ability to manage them goes out of control anyway and you really don't need anything larger this day in age. So you think Google, Microsoft, Boeing, etc., could function if reduced to 200 people? I agree with you on most liberal issues, but this idea seems silly. Yes, which at the time depended on slavery, which liberals succeeded in outlawing. [FairfieldLife] Gays think they can make their own rules!
From a Religious standpoint, where the Laws of Nature determine proper behavior according to the rules designed by God, the idea that mere humans can flout God's laws is foolhardy to say the least. Presuming the Religious point of view is correct; Gays, though well intended, are basically misguided fools! The laws of nature are designed to protect humanity from suffering, not deprive them from happiness and pleasure. Only by following Natural Law can man become truly happy, not visa-versa. Not matter how hard Gays try to change society, one thing they will NEVER be able to change is the still small voice of their own soul called conscience!!

It's a really bad idea - and if the number of tea parties being held now is any indication, this move will spark an outrage with the mid-term voters. Apparently a majority of American voters are not in favor of passage of the current health insurance reform bill. With Brown in the Senate, Reid's natural coalition becomes one vote short of 60, empowering the Republicans to block the bill--but only if they all stick together. For Reid and for the White House, this creates an almost irresistible temptation to slow the seating of Brown while trying to rush the healthcare bill to President Barack Obama's desk while they still have the votes to override the filibuster. [FairfieldLife] Coburn (Republican) Offers Amendment to Reduce Fed Spending!
January 20, 2010 Coburn (Republican) Offers Amendment to Reduce Federal Spending, Not Increase National Debt While the Senate debates legislation to increase the national debt, Dr. Coburn has offered an amendment to stop the debt increase and immediately reduce federal spending. Specifically, the amendment would alleviate the need to increase the national debt by rescinding at least $120 billion by consolidating more than 640 duplicative government programs, cutting wasteful Washington spending, and returning billions of dollars of unspent money. The amendment will be debated this week and early next week. Sixty votes are required to approve the amendment http://coburn.senate.gov/public/

Those who deny that the environment is being seriously damaged do so because they are too lazy to recycle or save energy. http://newshuddlines.blogspot.com So let's have THAT argument, and not cloak the laudable goal of improving the environment in catastrophe, embellished numbers and political correctness. Yes, in the case of food, about 72 hours. If your threshold is lower than others, that is a reflection on you, Judy, not on the Haitian people. As I just pointed out, we don't know whether it's lower than others. And I don't think it's a reflection (a negative one, at least) on either me or the Haitian people. And your attempts to justify or excuse bad behavior on the part of a few reflects on the whole population in a distasteful way. I don't consider it bad behavior. Stealing, under any circumstances is bad behavior, now, is it forgiven? probably yes! There is such a thing as mitigating circumstances, however I think it would merit a punishment never the less, however slight

[FairfieldLife] Prominent Scientists now think mini ice age imminent!
They say that their research shows that much of the warming was caused by oceanic cycles when they were in a `warm mode' as opposed to the present `cold mode'. This challenge to the widespread view that the planet is on the brink of an irreversible catastrophe is all the greater because the scientists could never be described as global warming `deniers' or sceptics. Among the most prominent of the scientists is Professor Mojib Latif, a leading member of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has been pushing the issue of man-made global warming on to the international political agenda since it was formed 22 years ago. Prof Latif, who leads a research team at the renowned Leibniz Institute at Germany's Kiel University, has developed new methods for measuring ocean temperatures 3,000ft beneath the surface, where the cooling and warming cycles start. snip http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1242011/DAVID-ROSE-The-mi\ ni-ice-age-starts-here.html
