No, it would be too easy for someone to check up
on him.

However, an independently written bio might include
some facts he has chosen to leave out; and it might
or might not characterize him as nationally
renowned.

When someone has written their own bio, it's
potentially misleading not to indicate this
when you quote it.

I don't. As long as he stays
 away from new age/meditation/yoga/mysticism/etc, I'm confident he's
 a fine journalist.

I'm not. I think if he had decided somebody or
something he was investigating were Bad, he would
be just as uninhibited about loading his case
unfairly and misleadingly as he is about doing so
with New Age-type stuff.

Andrew Skolnick--with whom I had many disputes when
  he was posting to alt.meditation.transcendental--is
one of the sleaziest people I've ever encountered. That
he gets to call himself a *journalist* is just mind-
  boggling.

 He's really not a journalist. He's a skeptic writer/commentator... the
 Ann Coulter of skeptic writer/commentators.

Coulter believes a lot more of what she spouts
than Andrew does. Andrew's slanting and spinning
is malicious and thoroughly calculated.

He *has* done plenty of advocacy and investigative
journalism on what we would consider worthy causes--
he's a hard-core liberal politically and socially--
but considering the deceptions he pulls when he's in
skeptical/debunking mode regarding alternative
medicine, it's hard to imagine he doesn't do
exactly the same thing in other areas.

He doesn't miss the irony: he revels in it. Payback's a bitch. My understanding
of his
background is that he watched his dumpster-diving mom spend every penny on new

with good

Andrew Skolnick--with whom I had many disputes when
he was posting to alt.meditation.transcendental--is
one of the sleaziest people I've ever encountered. That
he gets to call himself a *journalist* is just mind-

Eh. He's on a Mission From God, what can I say?

Completely missing the, um, let's call it *irony*

deceit and other thoroughly unscrupulous tactics.

He doesn't miss the irony: he revels in it.

OK, well, I was trying to be polite. What he
revels in is hypocrisy, in additon to his other
sins.

Payback's a bitch. My understanding of his
background is that he watched his dumpster-diving mom spend every
penny on new age crapola rather than buy food and clothing. He
hates all things new age, and with good reason.

He has good reason to hate new age scams, not all things
new age. He's taking out his childhood traumas on things
that don't deserve it.

Andrew, you justified your reverting of my edit of the lawsuit text because I
was being a
vandal. Here is your original text, followed by my revision:

MUM has been sued by the parents of the killed student on the basis that TM
might be
dangerous for mentally disturbed people and for not taking actions to protect
the victim
after he had been violently attacked earlier in the day by the mentally ill
student[3].

Here is my revision which you then reverted, calling it vandalism:

MUM has been sued by the parents of the killed student on the basis that TM
might be
dangerous for mentally disturbed people and for not taking actions to protect
other
students after the first violent attack earlier in the day by the mentally ill
student[http://
www.religionnewsblog.com/13814

Here is what your own link says. Why is it vandalism to modify your
contribution to be
more in-line with what your link says?:

The lawsuits say university employees ignored the first attack, resuming
classes and
blaming the attack on Sem's improper meditation.
Sem was placed in the custody of Joel Wynsong, the university's dean of men,
and taken to
Wynsong's apartment on campus, where he stole a paring knife, court documents
said.
He then fled the apartment and went to the dining hall where he stabbed Butler,
records
show.
The lawsuits allege the university was negligent for failing to recognize the
threat Sem
posed to students, reporting the initial attack to authorities and keeping Sem
away from
other students after he attacked Killian. [emphasis mine]

Omigod, what a disaster. Skolnick's going to turn
the entry into a rerun of his JAMA article if he's not
stopped.

I'm tempted to put in a paragraph or three on the JAMA
episode and point out that one of the people making
contributions to the entry is the author of the JAMA
muckraking piece and that he was sued by TM for it.

There ought to be *some* way of getting a person
barred from editing Wikipedia entries when it can be
demonstrated that they have a personal interesting in
and a history of smearing whatever the entry is about.
Or at the very least, there ought to be some way of
identifying such a person's contributions in the
main entry.

(Laswon, please do me a flavor: Don't let Peter Klutz
keep putting in the phrase comprises of--it isn't
English.  You corrected it once, and he put it back in;
then you or someone else corrected it again--but he's
liable to put it back if you're not careful. Minor
point, but the phrase is really illiterate.)

You're doing terrific work, Lawson, but if Andrew has
time on his hands, countering his distortions and
misstatements is going to be a full-time job.

Yeah, but as long as folks realized one of the

TM look bad, and had a history of doing so by
misleading, they might take the worst bits with a
few more grains of salt.

Why, the parts that say positive things about TM,
silly!

Actually it looks pretty accurate and pretty balanced
now, at least for the moment. Peter went in and got
rid of Skolnick's worst depredations.

But, oh, man, does it need a good copy-edit! I'd
volunteer, but there's not much point as long as
it's still in flux.

Actually there is one minor factual error: the price
of TM in the U.S. is said to have been $75 in the late
'70s. When I learned in 1976, it was $125.
