Re: Bandy and Buster updates

2006-03-06 Thread Lernermichelle

Kerry,
I would try 2 doses of I-R IV with Bandy and see if it
helps.  Unless he really freaks out about IV, it's not a big deal.
Mine got it without much problem.  All of us who have used it for URI-type
problems seem to see it work by the second dose.  I would definitely do
that, and if it worked, given how Smokey and Daisy have responded, I think I
would continue as needed sub-q or IV.

If Buster comes back as having something other than cancer, I
would try the I-R with him too.

Well, Bandy seems to be holding his own with this new eye infection..We
can't give him the eye meds with the dex in it since he has an ulcer on that
eye so I am using the non-steroid drops which seem to work much slower...I do
hope we can get on the other soon as it does seem to work much faster...
I have asked my vet about giving him immuno-regulin, sub Q, but since I
have read Michelle's post, I am not so sure either...She didn't want to stress
him so much by doing it IV so I don't know what to do..She did want me to find
out all of your protocols so we can study it first..I will look thru the
archives to see what is there, but if any of you have some suggestions for us,
  we would appreciate it..
Buster isn't doing so well right now...She aspirated the lymph node and
sent it to an oncologist, I think...She didn't seem to think it was lymphoma
since no other nodes seemed to be enlarged just the ones in his neck...He is
eating some, but not much..He will drink chicken broth and eat a/d..I gave him
a little fancy feast and he did nibble at it some...He is drinking and using
the box, but seems to tire out really quick..He will still come to me and get
in my lap...He justs wants to lay there.  He is just staying in his bed
next to Bandy.  Buster is on baytril and 20mg pred a day still for
now...He doesn't have a temp either...so any other thoughts on all of this
would be appreciated...I don't know what to do..
Our best to all of you and your furr-babies...

Re: CLS addition

2006-03-06 Thread Barb Moermond
Thank Tonya, I'm doing pretty well, just really really busy so I've been lurking for the most part.  Smoky has a check-up this week for his urinary issues.  He was blocked last month - he was a very unhappy boy:(  but that's what the emergency clinic is for and he saw the same vet as before and was remembered:) and his regular vet is awesome, so we're actually making some progress managing his issues with interstitial cystitis and also struvite crystals on occasion.  Bandit is his usual irrepressible self:)  very sweet:)     hope all is well with you and your crew! bcatatonya <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:Barb,     My condolences to you, and your mom and stepdad on the loss of  little Tigger.  :(     I
haven't noticed you around as much lately.  How are you doing yourself? tBarb Moermond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi all, it's been a rough week all over it seems.  This morning, my mom and stepdad had their kitty Tigger put to sleep.  She was nearly 17 and had been with them since early-mid kittenhood.  One night during a snowstorm, my stepdad had just closed the shop and was standing at the truck door when a little rub was felt on his ankle and tiny squeaking was heard.  This little white and buff kitten with very noticeable injuries was at his feet.  Naturally, he scooped her up and brought her home.  They called her Fart for quite a while - any of you who have rescued mal- and/or under-nourished kits know this well:)  She was a very pretty kitty, small head and delicate facial features, tiny
feet, long legs:)  sort of built like a race horse.   She was an excellent hunter and lap-warmer.  But those injuries had long-term effects.  The soft tissue of her right wrist had completely worn out due to her limping from the old injury on her left shoulder/leg.  She was flat footed on that paw.  She also developed spinal arthritis, as another kitty of my mom's had.  With that, it's only a matter of time before the nerves just don't work in the hind quarters.  Mom had tremendous guilt about old Samantha; she'd waited far too long to help her.  Tigger hadn't progressed nearly as far as Sam had, but she was declining rapidly.  She wasn't playing on her own anymore, and she'd previously spent hours amusing herself with string tied to the back of a rocking chair.  She was allowing Bozo to groom her for longer and longer sessions which was simply unheard of - Bozo was an interloper, no matter how many mice he caught for
her!  She also didn't know whether or not she'd made it to the box - messes in the vicinity etc.  But what was far more worrying is that when she did make it to the box and stepped in a clump, she couldn't feel the debris on her foot - which of course dried on like cement - and therefore wasn't grooming her feet.  The deafness she'd developed and the weakening eyesight weren't important, but when they lose their grooming and their playing  Tigger had an amazing run of years considering the start she had and fortunately, my mom will have no serious second-guessing about doing it too soon (the vet agreed with the decision, which helped) or guilt about doing it too late and making Tigger suffer unnecessarily (like with Sam).  It's the hardest decision we have to make, but the grief is worth it - all the moments of joy and love far outweigh the pain of losing a friend.. eventually anyway.  So Belinda, if you could please add to the FeLV- list,
Tigger, loved by Maggie and Dale.  It was this morning, March 4.As always, I'm so glad I know all of you:)  you bring joy and understanding and compassion to the world.PSBandit says rppp to everyoneBarb+Smoky the House Puma+El Bandito Malito"My cat the clown: paying no mind to whom he should impress. Barb, please tell your mom and stepdad how sorry I am.  Tigger was very lucky to show up on their doorstep!Barb Moermond <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Hi all, it's been a rough week all over it seems. They called her Fart for quite a while - any of you who have rescued mal- and/or under-nourished kits know this well:)  She was a very pretty kitty, small head and delicate facial
features, tiny feet, long legs:)  sort of built like a race horse. She was allowing Bozo to groom her for longer and longer sessions which was simply unheard of - Bozo was an interloper, no matter how many mice
he caught for her! So Belinda, if you could please add to the
FeLV- list, Tigger, loved by Maggie and Dale.  It was this morning, March 4.As always, I'm so glad I know all of you:)  you bring joy and understanding and compassion to the world.PSBandit says rppp to everyoneBarb+Smoky the House Puma+El Bandito Malito"My cat the clown: paying no mind to whom he should impress. later I can open and view the pictures of Jake. Sometimes we

Please know that you did the best for him and when they loose
that twinkle in their eye I think it's there way to let us know
it's ok to say goodbye they are ready.

Brings back some last moment memories of one of mine that last
that twinkle and all I could do was cry because I knew it was

I know that Jack has touched you in a very special way and will

Marissa,

I am so sorry to hear that Jake passed on. It's so
hard when you love them so much. He was adorable. I
love the slide show that you made of him. It sounds
like you made the right decision to let him go. He's
out playing now with the others at the Rainbow Bridge,
free and full of life and energy, and no more pain.
You are an angel to have taken him in and given him
such a wonderful life. He looked so happy and serene
in his photos. I got the idea that no matter where
you took him, he would be happy as long as he was with
you. Moving to a new city (much less NYC!!!) is hard,
but moving and then losing your beloved furbaby soon
after makes it all the more difficult. I hope you
have family there or a good support system. If not,
if you need anything or need to vent or cry, please
don't hesitate to come here. We are here for you. Be
gentle with yourself right now, Marissa. Give
yourself time and take care.

Re: Immuno-Regulin, IV v. sub-q

2006-03-06 Thread Susan Loesch
Hey, Michelle - I'm the one who has the 10yr old cat who has been getting it for 7-8 years.  It really is hard to know if that has helped or not -- in fact my own vet, who I think is on top of everything, said he doubts it - he thinks she is just in that lucky % of feleuk+ cats who is going to remain healthy.  Still, the people who surrendered her to us want her to continue to get it and have  donated enough money to insure that it is covered -- plus I figure if "it ain't broke, don't fix it" -- I hate to change anything since she seems to be doing so well. Just wish there was a way to KNOW!       What I did try was IR - 2 doses subQ on two cats - I think Jen mentioned it - for URI's.  One cat is negative and had a URI that nothing I did was touching - two doses and she was much better.  Tried the same on Daisy, my little 14mo old positive kitty, and for the first time since before Xmas she is free of a
URI.    I also did big doses of lysine. - so I really don't know if it was the IR or the lysine that made the difference.     I am  leaning toward starting Daisy on regular IR doses -- mainly because there are signs that make me think she isn't going to be a long-term survivor - and I am trying already to do everything that even might help.[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: FYI, I called the company that makes I-R, and they say that they only recommend using it IV because parts are absorbed sub-q and IM without being effective, i.e. it is more effective IV.  That said, it seems to be working great for Smokey sub-q, so if anyone needs to give it at home it sounds like it is ok, though the
company will not say it is.  But in bad situations, I would try to get it done IV.     I have been thinking about the 10 year old cat who has been getting monthly low dose I-R injections for 7-8 years, can not remember who on the list told us about her. I have been thinking of giving them to my two remaining positives. I am wondering if it could stimulate the immune system enough to keep the virus at bay and prevent the cancer and anemia that hits most of them before that age.  But I would only do it if I could do it sub-q, and I just have not decided, given that we do not know if that is what has helped the 10 year old cat and the company does not recommend using it prophylactically or sub-q. Has anyone else been considering doing this? Gray thinks I shouldn't, just because it may have nothing to do with why that cat has done so well and I do not know what giving it sub-q and monthly, neither of which is recommended by the manufacturer, would
actually do to or for them. (for instance, every sub-q shot carries some risk of infection or VAS, and this is a bacteria...)  Though I also know that many drugs are successfully used "off-label." I am leaning towards not doing it at this point, but am still thinking about it a lot. I would be curious to know everyone's thoughts on this.     Michelle

Re: help with furkid food recomendations

2006-03-06 Thread wendy
Clarissa,

I am almost done switching my furbabies over to Innova
Evo, which is all natural, mostly protein, no grains
(which is great for felines), and supposed to be the
best stuff out there. You cannot buy it retail. The
company that makes it has said they don't want to
compromise the quality of the food, so you'll have to
go to a smaller store to buy it, as well as many other
premium foods, or buy online. Hope this helps.

:)
Wendy

all the posts i've read suggest feeding a high quality
food. would ya'll suggest brands ect that your furkids
do well with and like ? dry food as well as caned ?

the last cat i had , PJ (paint job) lived to 16 and
wouldn't eat anything but meowmix. the "herd" is
currently eating a purina brand and having some
problems with it (namely gas *WHEW* !!)

i know Nothing about brands and quality of cat food.
i know in the future i'll need to change to caned food
and other options based on their health but for now is
there a dry food option that would be good for them ?
cost at the moment is the biggest issue with 8
chowhounds and recovering financially from the
spay/neuter cost. hmmm...also have to get them wormed
and then vaccines, the s/n was the biggest issue so we
could let the boys outa the cage ! (bandit kept
falling outa the hammock)

pogo, stitch, hudini, teddy, salem, bandit, oreo &
boots thank you for your time and recomendations in
this matter

Re: Bandy and Buster updates

2006-03-06 Thread Kerry Roach
Well, Bandy seems to be holding his own with this new eye infection..We can't give him the eye meds with the dex in it since he has an ulcer on that eye so I am using the non-steroid drops which seem to work much slower...I do hope we can get on the other soon as it does seem to work much faster... I have asked my vet about giving him immuno-regulin, sub Q, but since I have read Michelle's post, I am not so sure either...She didn't want to stress him so much by doing it IV so I don't know what to do..She did want me to find out all of your protocols so we can study it first..I will look thru the archives to see what is there, but if any of you have some suggestions for us, we would appreciate it.. Buster isn't doing so well right now...She aspirated the lymph node and sent it to an oncologist, I think...She didn't seem to think it was lymphoma since no other nodes seemed to be enlarged just the ones in his neck...He is eating some, but not much..He will
drink chicken broth and eat a/d..I gave him a little fancy feast and he did nibble at it some...He is drinking and using the box, but seems to tire out really quick..He will still come to me and get in my lap...He justs wants to lay there.  He is just staying in his bed next to Bandy.  Buster is on baytril and 20mg pred a day still for now...He doesn't have a temp either...so any other thoughts on all of this would be appreciated...I don't know what to do.. Our best to all of you and your furr-babies... Kerry, Bandy, Buster and Lil Rascal
