When I moved in to care for my mother a bit ago she said, oh, my
Lord! We can't tell people we have so many cats! (We had seven

four and when they ask me I'll tell them that I have three. And
nobody will remember anyway! (Besides, everyone we know is a giant

We have a four cat limit in our county. :(

But that's beside the point.

What if the city code were 6 dogs and 5 cats and tomorrow they changed
it to 3 dogs and 2 cats? I mean, you can't predict the future. What
if they move somewhere where the code is only 4 dogs?

How many of us have had animals

1. in excess of city codes
2. in excess of what was allowed by our landlord
3. in secret from our landlord
4...well, I think you get the point.

Fortunately we don't have animal limit laws here, though the shelter
limits me to 10 (personal and foster) animals at a time.

They only count litters as 1, though. So all my litters, including
the ones that are almost 2 years old, I count as 1. That's how I get
around it. Heh.

large, although the backyard is nicely sized). The
municipal code says that no more than 5 dogs and 3
cats be in one home at a time. So our question,
especially to shelter owners/volunteers, is this: if
you know adopting a dog out, even if it's to a good
family, will put that family in violation of city
codes, would you do it? My friend is not the one
making the decision; she's just reporting the
information to the shelter. We were just curious as
to what your thoughts are on this.

Re: Could VO help an asymptomatic FeLV+ cat?

2007-04-17 Thread Nina
It's wonderful to hear Ember is doing well. That was such a scary
episode with her anemia symptoms. I have long suspected that FIO might
be useful in treating kitties when they first contract the disease to
fight it off. Unfortunately, we don't have the research to prove or
disprove that.

You asked for thoughts and opinions... If my memory serves me
correctly, FIO lasts a year before reconstitution in the fridge. I
think if it were me, I'd order it as a safeguard measure to keep close
in case it's needed. I'm betting if you started to near the expiration
date, there would be someone on the list willing to buy it from you. I
don't know about using it on asymptomatic kitties. Who knows, it might
help in some way. I would probably use Interferon A while she's
asymptomatic to help her stay that way. I think it's Gloria that has
used the IA that way and had kitties crash when she took them off it,
(I've used IA off and on when symptoms presented, but not consistently
while they were feeling good). I don't know Lance, it's such a crap
shoot, I so wish we had more answers. My best advice is to follow your
intuition and do what your heart tells you. Along with fighting felv,
the next big battle is fighting the potential what ifs.

Hugs to you and Ember,
Nina

I have a question that will be hard to answer. Really, I'm looking for
thoughts and opinions, since I don't think we know enough about
Virbagen Omega and feleuk. My vet was recently approved by the FDA to
import the standard course of VO for Ember. I have put money aside for
quite awhile, hoping that we would get this chance.

The thing is, Ember is, for the most part, asymptomatic. She did have
an odd spell of anemia (down to 19 last October and subsequently back
to 35 for the last few vet visits, starting in November). She also had
especially low wbc at the same time, which is now back to low-normal.
She seems to have developed a food allergy to Innova EVO dry, though
she tolerates EVO canned (and now Felidae) just fine.

Ember will have another ELISA to verify her status. If she is still
positive, do you think we should go ahead with the VO, even though she
seems to be doing pretty well?

Thanks,

Hey Lance,

I tend to be in agreement with Nina. Listen to your
heart and gut.

If it were me, I would be hesitant to do anything
differently if my kitty were asymptomatic. Can your
vet put off ordering the VO or order it for other
client's symptomatic kitties to see how it works?
Does his FDA approval have an expiration? I have seen
good things about VO from European users. You might
query the archives and see what pulls up on it because

I just ordered both of those books on Amazon.com it was exactly cheap
but they are getting hard to find, as it is I won't get the pitcairn
book until the first or second week of May and the other the end of
April. I've been cooking for Fred and will gradually switch the others,
right now I just want to get Fred eating enough, he's my CRF guy.

My vet is still fighting me on the feeding tube, I'm going to weigh him
each day until the 25 and then we'll see if he's gaining, maintaining or
losing. So far he gained an oz from the 15th to the 16th. He doesn't
look like it he is so bony.
Wish me luck, my guys are having a hard time giving up their Fancy
Feast, I'm so worried and want to get them off any processed food as
soon as possible.

I've got the texture stuff pretty well figured out, because their food
has to have the same texture as their Fancy feast, my guys are very
texture oriented. But the right vitamins and minerals they need is
where I'm having problems, that's why I ordered the books, plus to get a
little variety in their diet.

Poor Stamp. I'm sure my big kitty Jack Jack (he passed away from

Natural Balance Pet Foods said Tuesday it found melamine in two of its pet
food products, which the company has recalled.

But Natural Balance doesn't use wheat gluten, the ingredient contaminated
with melamine in the Menu recall. Instead, it suspects that melamine was in
a rice protein concentrate, a new ingredient used in the dry foods, said
Natural Balance president Joey Herrick. That was the only change in the
product, he says.

The concentrate is now being tested, he added. Melamine was detected in
samples of the food. The recalled foods are: Venison Brown Rice Dry Dog
Food and Venison Green Pea Dry Cat Foods.

Whether other pet food makers got the same rice protein concentrate is
unclear at this time. Herrick says the food was made for Natural Balance by
Diamond Pet Foods.

Mine average one such meal a day and two meals of commercial catfood. Wish
turkey was as cheap yearround as it is around Thanksgiving. I could afford to
increase the shredded deboned turkey and decrease the catfood.

It seems like every day something new lands on the recall/contaminated list.
Now that Natural Balance, which does not even contain wheat gluten, has been

Re: Could VO help an asymptomatic FeLV+ cat?

2007-04-17 Thread Lance
They're the same thing. FIO is feline interferon omega (the generic
name) and VO is Virbagen Omega, Virbac's trade name for FIO. VO (or
FIO) is feline-specific interferon. Many of us here give low-dose
human interferon to our FeLV cats. While it would seem that this
helps the immune system, it would be nice if we could give it in high
doses. Unfortunately, high dose human interferon isn't good for a
number of reasons, one of which being that the cat develops a
tolerance to human interferon, and it can no longer be used to any
effect.

On the other hand, since VO is feline specific, it can be used in
high doses. Unfortunately, it's very expensive and hard to get here
in the US, where one has to go through the FDA to acquire it. For
those who live across the pond, the availability isn't a problem.

update on Cassidy

2007-04-17 Thread Melissa Lind
Well Cassidy has to go to Best Friends soon after May 1st. They can't wait
until July 1st for me to get a second IFA, but they said they'd keep him
apart from the other FeLV cats if there was any doubt as to his status. But,
I wonder what they consider doubt. I'd hate to expose him and he turns up
negative in the future.

And then there's the problem of funding the trip. I don't know how to come
up with just the gas money before May 1st! Do you guys know of any place to
turn to for help in a hurry? I figure it will cost me at least $240 for gas
round trip. Plus, according to Map Quest, the drive is a little over 18
hours! That'll mean lodging along the way and at the destination. Then
lodging on the way home unless I can get someone to take turns
driving/sleeping. I know! Maybe I'll just hitch a ride with a trucker!
They're used to long days like that! (Just kidding of course).

Then there's the fact that I still don't have his first IFA test results
(just the Elisa). I'm so frustrated by my vet's office! I like my vet quite
a bit, but some of the helpers are a bunch of, pardon me, morons! I'm sure I
couldn't do they're jobs, but I know I could keep things straight. They told
me today that the lab work for Cassidy's IFA got lost in the mail, at the
lab, somewhere. My guess is they forgot to send it, and now they need
another sample. Who knows, but now we're really pushing the deadline for his
trip to Utah. They want him to come in on Monday since they won't send to
the lab until next week anyway. I think that if they won't put a rush on it
(like tomorrow), then I'll just have to find a vet who will.

Furthermore, I called this morning about my two rescues in the garage. One
has the squirts, but I can't figure out which one. I can never catch them in
the act! I wanted to know what I should do, and I also called to get
Bandit's Prozac refilled. Okay, the receptionist takes down the info, and
says they'll call back.

So, I finally get a call back late in the afternoon (I had called early in
the morning). The message they left was something about Bandit needing blood
drawn again (but Cassidy's the one who actually needs it), and the rest of
the message said that the food I wanted would be there in the morning.
What?!?! I didn't ask for food; Cassidy needs the blood work; what about the
diarrhea?; what about the Prozac? G! Sorry I'm ranting, but seriously!
So, I called back and politely explained the real situation. Sometimes one
of the workers there (or several) just seem like complete space-cadets! I
know we all have off days, but they seem to more than most. If I didn't like
my vet so much.well, I suppose there are other likeable vets around.I just
hate to travel too far since the car ride is usually traumatizing enough.

Thanks for listening to me complain. I needed to vent. I know many of you
are going through much worse situations and are dealing with a lot of
sadness, so I'm sorry if my complaints seem trivial!

I'm still not sure what I'll do with Cassidy. I'm just hoping his IFA comes
back negative, but I know that's not going to happen. But, he's so healthy
now, I just hope he has a wonderfully, long life.

Melissa
