Oh, dear MeMe with the wonderful name! You WILL get rid of the giardia. Just be careful not to drink out of any glasses or mugs she has put her paw into. That's how I got giardia! I remember thinking, oh how cute! And later drinking out of that glass and a week or two later, bingo! I later told my vet and the head vet tech and, boy, did they laugh! If you DO get it it'll go away eventually if you're healthy. ~~Oh, ack! Lilibet just jumped up on my desk to show me--a roach from the basement! She is so pleased! I thought I heard her delicate little voice! She's the one who taught the Three Orange Boys how to kill their prey by bringing them various bugs she would catch. So she's taken it to them and they're very happy, too. I don't mind roaches--except that they're IN MY (mother's) BASEMENT! Ick! I thought I could get 'em with those roach things you hide around in the backs of cupboards, but NO! Crap! She actually just brought it to me again and it wasn't looking so good by then--so proud!--and then took it back to the babies a second time. Very exciting early AM here!~~ Lilibet also has a runny eye, which, of course, she arrived with. Sometimes it runs and sometimes she sneezes. I think MeMe's wellness program is working! If you google purring or cats purring you'l eventually find info on the healing power of purring! Pretty neat stuff! Oh--and you know what else? She knows she's sick but she also knows she loves you and you love her and that's stronger than any sickness. Love from the cats over here! And me, too. Re: MeMe
Sounds like she is trying to teach you to hunt. Be careful with those things you sit around. You don't want a cat playing with them. If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow man. PLEASE Pray for my Charity....
As most of you remember, Charity [feral mom dumped w/ babies] I have a long controversial history.. [She got out of taped-up box, so I had Timmy Thomas as bottle babies. ] I was able to trap her, but she escaped while I was cleaning her crate [post spaying thank heavens]. I decided not to re-trap her since I had a special area for ALL the strays/ferals here. And, also, she had me in ER so many times... Clearly, she disliked humans, and after being tossed out like trash I couldn't blame her. I believed she had been somebody's cat once upon a time when she had babies, well, they DUMPED them (Education IS the key. Spay/Neuter all your babies) So, I believed as long as she always had food shelter [here], it would be less stressful than trying to re-trap her. And, she had her constant companion, Black Bart However, life can change so fast... I had my MVA, my room mate was NOT tending my stray/feral area when I finally got home from hosp., o my way to Dr. I saw Charity running across the very heavily traveled, busy road I live on So, despite all my handicaps I made a promise right then that I would tend to my stray/feral area... Even opened up the barn so they could get indoors when weather turned bad.. So, I was very concerned about the cats I'd been tending to, but, I managed to hobble out to barn area to feed water, put fresh bedding out, etc. (And barn is W-A-Y back in yard, never a problem before MVA, but after, well, it's very difficult for me to get there) But, da_n it, I made a promise to these lost souls.. I was thrilled when I saw Charity Bart back in the area.. Made me even more determined to get out there so they wouldn't wander get killed on the road.. Which I did. But, the snow and ice this winter really made it even more difficult.. But, despite my problems, I kept barn open, re-insulated spots, etc. NOT EASY, but I somehow managed to get it done. After all, I made a promise So, one snowy night early Feb.. while I was out walking my Rottie, [Lady]Bug, who's bigger than me no less, lo behold, guess who stalks me out? Miss Charity Now mind you, Bug is deaf, I'm almost blind [great combination, huh?]... I heard this pitiful plea, couldn't see who it was, but Bug, who lives loves all my furbabies, saw her {Charity}, went totally ballistic - strange cat in her territory... When I finally realized it was Charity, I was mortified to say the leastJust imagine the thoughts running thru my head - me falling, Bug getting off leash Charity's demise...ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC, that's putting it mildly.. Somehow I managed to get Bug back into house. But sweet Charity was on a mission... She NEVER gave up, and actually came waited for me on back porch - something she never did! So, when I went back out, w/ a carrier no less, I decided the time was right.. But, not having any strength on my right arm, it was a disaster, to say the least.Neither of us would give up..And, she insisted I hobble on the snow/ice out to barn! She was patient w/ me, but a tad irritated.. She knew what she had to do So, we finally get out to barn, where I thanked the lord I had my recliner [Boy, did I ever need that!!!] Lo behold My Bart was there! And obviously in VERY poor shape! And, this mean 'ole intact feral came right up to me, rubbing my legs! I was shocked! He had never approached me prior, always ran off when he caught a mere glance, and now he was almost a love muffin. Something was off. Big time He looked very ill - skinny, bloated in abdomen, you name it, I actually though e was another stray/feral - until I saw hisshrunken equipment...Then I just knew it was our Bart. So, I set him up, made an emergency appt. deep down inside, my heart was broken.. While waiting the 2 days for appt., , he ate very well, turned into a love-muffin, I kind of got my hopes up...BIG MISTAKE!! At my vet, Dr. V. started to drain fluid, I finally asked him to stop. Also, Bart was pale white, all over almost NOT a good sign. He was also mostly blind.. Among numerous other things NO WAY TO EXIST. So, I made the dreaded decision.Very, very hard. but thought Bart would NOT have the [or any] quality of life. [And, he was an old man.] Ok, now to Charity. We DID have a vet. appt.soon after, but I had to cancel because three was NO way to get her in carrierWane a compete exam, including BW, but never got there. And, she was doing so well. My primary concern was Puma, I must admit... Now get this. Thurs. PM she wouldn't [hardly] touch her wet food... So I pulled a Puma, Fancy Feast Elegant Medleys - NO GO.!!! But, when I pulled out the people tuna, she

If you have a long standing relationship with the vet he may come to the house or you may have vets in the area that do housecalls. There might be a vet tech who is willing to come to your home and drive you to the vet's with Charity. This is awful. My prayers for you and your little friends. This is distressing all of them. Re: OT - my moral ideas behind claw trimming
First off, I carbon copied this to the FELVOT list, so we can take this discussion over there, please reply ON THAT GROUP, not on this list: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/felvot/ Well, for one, I have NEVER seen an ingrown claw on a cat. Given proper scratching surfaces (natural wood, sisal rope, carpet - and sofas, LOL) cats' claws naturally shed periodically. The older, outside sheath sloughs off much like a snake sheds it's skin, leaving a sharper and shorter fresh claw underneath it. It's been my experience that EVERY time I have ever seen a cat get it's claws trimmed (like when I took one in to be spayed, or neutered, or had dental work, etc), there is some amount of splintering of the outside claw sheath, which causes premature sheath shedding. When the claw splits and tries to fall off the cat before it is ready, it can (and in my experience, USUALLY, starts at the tip, and begins to loosen from the tip up towards the cuticle. I've seen many times where the claw sheath was hanging from JUST the cuticle, but wasn't ready to come off, snagging on things, and actually causing my cat discomfort. Attempts to gently pull it off resulted in YOWLS and jerking away, thus I came to the conclusion that it is painful for the cat. I cannot see inducing ANY amount of unnecessary pain on my cats, thus, I am morally opposed to claw trimming, based on my past experiences. Yes, I have scars, yes, I have had cuts that bled for hours and hours, and through several band-aids. My cats come first, though, IMO. I do not believe there is any reason to trim cat claws, outside of human vanity and convenience, but I am OPEN to the possibility that it may be true that ingrown claws could exist - I have just never seen it myself, and my opinions are based on what I can back up with personal experience and personally proven fact (in other words, my opinions are based on what I have seen with my own two eyes). Re: OT - Phelix...and lessons learned.
I'm on a never-ending revolving medicated shampoo experiment, if I find one that truly helps for more than a day or two, I will post it to the group. The best results so far are with one called Epi-Soothe, by Virbac, he seems MUCH better for about 2-3 days when I shampoo him with it (letting it sit on his body for 3 minutes before rinsing). On a funny side note.. I use leftovers (and things that were duds for Mythic's issues) on myself, and I have found that one called Relief, by DVM made MY itchy scalp feel great, and my hair looked great too, LOL. My head actually felt lighter after using it, I have no idea why, but it's amazing. It's like my head could breathe, and before all my hair or head oils, or something, were built up and blocking the air flow. LOL, yeah, I'm totally nuts. Personally, I will euthanise Mythic if I think he's suffering so much that I am considering something as drastic as declawing. His allergies ARE manageable with Dexamethisone injections though, so I do have something I can resort to when it gets really bad. I would take him to a feline dermatologist before I considered declawing or euthanasia. There are very involved and specific allergy tests that can be done, and once they get those results, they can begin allergy shots. I've gotten all the info in the past, but it's so costly I keep putting it off. He's only like this a few months max out of the year though... if it were a food allergy year-round, I would probably invest that money into the specialist. There's a good veterinary dermatologist specialist in New Hampshire. If you want to find one in your area, there is a find a veterinary dermatologist near you webpage from their association, I can find the link and post it if anyone is interested. Re: OT - Phelix...and lessons learned.
I found some WONDERFUL upholstery cleaner stuff, in the CAR section, no less! Gets stains out of anything I've tried so far, it's amazing stuff. It's by TurtleWax, and it's a big red and yellow aerosol can with a bristle plastic cap on it. It's called Power Out! Professional strength upholstery cleaner (with odor eliminating Odor-X). You spray it on, and it's a thick FOAM, let it sit for about a minute, then rub it in with a clean cloth. Continue to spray a dab more and rub with a clean cloth (use clean areas of the cloth, or a new one every few wipes), and it will erase the stain. The only problem I've found is that the clean area is noticeable because it's SO MUCH cleaner than the parts I didn't clean. This stuff made my 1994 model car's upholstery look LIKE NEW (and it completely eliminated the spilt sardine juice odor). I'm so very sorry for your loss. I've had a few of my ferals just disappear, and I think I would rather KNOW what happened than wonder as I do. At least she was with you, and know someone cared. Re: Charity (Crossed The Bridge)
Let me suggest something. Take from it what is right for you. A cat crying is not necessarily a cat in pain. In the wild a cat would rarely cry out. It would be an invitation to all to come and kill him. That is one reason a sick cat goes off by himself. My personal bet is that she was (like many elderly people) seeing her friends on the other side and exchanging greetings. I am sure she was very puzzled by everything. She may have been asking questions both of them and of you. You gave this wonderful little girl love and attention. She never had that before. For once her life was relatively peaceful. I really don't think you could have done more nor do I think she could have wanted more. On a practical matter..if you have ice packs you can preserve the body until Monday. You simply have to be diligent about keeping it cold. A cooler with ice (or a Rubbermaid box or whatever) or dry ice if you can get it will do. I had to bring a little girl home during very hot weather so she could be buried with my other little friends. It can be done. Frankly, I would throw out whatever food is in the way in the frig but I live alone...and would not tell dinner guests. No one will ever doubt that you tried everything you could think of. Suggestions, including my own, are made in case your thinking is clouded.as under the circumstances it could be easily.mine would be. I would suggest you try to link up with a back up crew for your own peace of mind. I live in a rural area and the vets I love are 120 + miles away (one way). My relationship with them is strong enough that I think one would come here if I had no options. I have no clue what I will do in a few years when they retire. There are 2 vets in this county and only one does small animals. This is to say that I do understand. Please wait a bit and ask Charity to visitshe has wonderful things to tell you. Re: OT - my moral ideas behind claw trimming
Maybe I missed something but I trim my nails. I trim the cats' nails. Part of it is self-defense. I have a few who like to hang out on my shoulders, some who will jump into my arms if I don't pick them up quickly enough. Also, if I don't blunt the ends of their nails, the cats stick to the upholstery. Amusing though this may be -- what better time to tickle a cat? -- I figure it's only fair that I trim those little nails. I blunt just the ends, don't go anywhere near the quick, and use clippers designed for cats' claws. It does not hurt them and it's pretty quick. I can't see any reason not to do it. Oh, I HAVE seen an ingrown nail on a cat who was rescued from a very harsh existence on the street, a tuxedo tom named Sylvester. He was a really good boy and appreciated every indication of care that he received. He was only with us 14 months. The starvation he had endured had damaged his kidneys, and probably other internal organs as well. He never minded having his nails trimmed and he really understood when we dealt with the one growing into his back paw pad. [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: First off, I carbon copied this to the FELVOT list, so we can take this discussion over there, please reply ON THAT GROUP, not on this list: http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/felvot/ Well, for one, I have NEVER seen an ingown claw on a cat.
It sounds like Phelix and Mythic might have inhalant or contact allergies and that the allergy tests might be worthwhile for them. Unfortunately, my vet and I are fairly certain that Scooter's problem IS a food allergy, which means food trials are the recommended method of diagnoses and treatment. Nothing that I can put on him topically is going to ease that facial itching that is coming from inside. Steroids do nothing (which is also an indication of food allergy). The good news is, he is NOT so uncomfortable that I would even begin to consider euthanasia. We have him on CalNat right now and it seems to lessen the scratching a good deal, (we have the left side of his head completely healed). But when I take off the collar it takes him less than a minute to kick the right side of his head open. He still plays, wrestles the other kitties, runs around and cuddles wearing the collar. But I know he would prefer life without it, as he hides if he sees me coming back with it after I've taken it off. I am pretty passionate about not declawing cats as well, ours all have their claws. I have many more possible food trials and alternative treatments to try before I get desperate enough for declawing. But if it comes down to it, I will consult with my vet about the possibility of a rear-declaw. I would never make my cat drink the poison Kool-Aid just because it couldn't live up to my never declaw ideal. Beth, it's not my never declaw ideal that made me say that, it is my genuine belief that declawing causes long term physical and psychological suffering, and I do not think putting a suffering cat through more things to make it suffer more is a correct course of action. Two wrongs don't make a right. Declawing is 100% cruel and inhumane, and euthanasia is 100% humane when done correctly. To me, there is no gray area there, it's black and white. To eliminate suffering, yes, I will euthanise an animal. I do not have those strong no-kill ideals others have these days. My son bites his fingernails until they bleed sometimes... would I ever THINK to even consider amputating his fingers to solve that problem? True, it WOULD completely eliminate the problem, and his self-mutilation, but at what cost? That's how I feel about it. That's just me, personally. I'd like to see a $1000 fine and mandatory 90 days in jail for felony animal cruelty for anyone that has a cat declawed - that and the revoking of veterinary licenses for any vet that does the surgery. But I admit, I'm totally way on one side of the fence on declawing - probably to the point of being impractical and even a bit of a lunatic.
