I'm so glad we did, I cant imagine what a frustrating, frightening life he'd be having out on the street right now, starving, full of tape worm, and 2 back legs that wont work. I'm crushed that we couldnt give him a better life, and for longer, but I'm glad we got to him when he needed us, and filled his belly and his heart for a few weeks. Safe and comfy and within a foot of food at all times. :) Anyway, I dont know anything about FELV, this was my first introduction to it... so I dont exactly know how the tumors are related (cancer?)... but I wanted to drop a line to folks who understand. The little girl who came to me, Dixie Louise Doodle Katt, stayed for two wonderful yearsfar more than the vets ever though possible. A month after Dixie left this world, she sent me a kitten who really needed a persontwo weeks later, she blessed me with a second kitten who needed a person. They are big, healthy cats and the joys of my life and a joy to all of Dixie's vets (holistic and regular). The time I had with her was a blessing beyond wordsbe prepared for the blessings your little one sends to you and open your arms, home and heart. Your little dude knew love and safety and plenty, things he never knew before he met you. I wish every being could be so lucky. Thanks Sharyl. I was hell bent that I was going to find him a home too. I was even trying to get some of my college kid neighbors to take him on, and I would sponsor his food and vet expenses. I mean I was paying for him anyway, I may as well pay for him to live in someone's house and not in my crummy basement room. But alas we didnt get that far. Hi, Julie. Sorry you lost your boy. This so sounds like my own intro to FeLV, when a stray came to my door and yowled to get in. He was a sweet and friendly boy, ready for affection even during the first few days, when he had horrific mats in his fur -- he looked like he had wings, but they were all mats. We got some of them out, and the vet finished up, but their tests revealed FeLV. We isolated Patches in a room away from our other cats and gave him lots of love and care, but after only 7 weeks he stopped eating. The vet said he thought there were lymphoma tumors making swallowing painful, so we made the decision and sent him along. We felt so bad for him, he really wanted to join the other cats in the rest of the house and was just such a nice boy. To this day I wish we had been able to do better by him, but our consolation is that his last couple of months were full of comfort and caring. The connection between FeLV and tumors is that the FeLV suppresses the immune system, and leaves them open to conditions, especially like lymphoma and cancers, that cats are naturally prone to but that a healthy cat's body would fight off. Julie, His fate would probably been much worse than that. Cats that are sick or impaired become prey...easy prey...instead of hunters. I am sure you know that cats don't show their people symptoms when they are sick..it is because they will die in the wildthe same, to a degree with dogs.They can be so hard to care for because they know their fates if they are not able to take care of themselves. Dixie didn't show signs that she was in trouble until the day before she left this world.I rushed her to the very best vets 2 + hours away. By the next day, she was leaving. She waited until I was taking her home to put her in an O2 tent.my little girl was not leaving this world at any vets..no way...only in the Jeep where she traveled on so many adventures and with her Person. I won't go into what raccoons, dogs, hawks.could have done. Your little Dude was extremely lucky...and you are blessed for caring for him. Keep your heart open. Hi! I work with cancer patients and can explain to you what happened. Some tumors (cancer) invade the spinal cord, pushing and causing leg weakness and according to my patients, the pain is excrutiating. Radiation therapy can palliate the pain but not cure at this stage. We have a window of 24-48 hours to treat or there will be a permanent disability( won't walk again). In your cat case, if medication didn't work, I think that you made the right decision by letting him go. Life is not measure about how long you live but how you lived it. Hi Julie, I've met you in some of the other cat groups we were both in. How sad about your stray dude. This is quite common with FelV cats. I've had several who lost the use of their back legs. Thank heavens you found this cat and you were able to give him a few weeks of love and care before you had to let him go. I believe it was you who had the drooling cat with stomatitis wasn't it? hi Julie, He sure was your kitty, and always will be! What a heartache that you came to know him during his final weeks, but what a blessing for him - I can't imagine the anquish he would have felt suffering like that. I am sure he's in heaven now, but he surely thought he was in heaven the moment you took him in. Hi Julie, I took in a stray that turned out to be FeLV+ at the same time you did (2 days before 4rth of July) so I really feel for you. My little Angel is doing ok for now, but when I first took him to the vet I was thinking he'd be lasting a month or so as well, and the feeling was terrible and wanted to give him the best time being as possible, not having to wonder where his next meal was coming from or run from other stray/feral cats in the area. I'm crushed that we couldnt give him a better life, and for longer, but I'm glad we got to him when he needed us, and filled his belly and his heart for a few weeks. Safe and comfy and within a foot of food at all times. :) Anyway, I dont know anything about FELV, this was my first introduction to it... so I dont exactly know how the tumors are related (cancer?)... but I wanted to drop a line to folks who understand.
