[Felvtalk] Questions about FeLV

2010-09-28 Thread A D
Hi, my cat was the picture of health about two weeks ago. She’s 2 years
old, female, spayed, orange tabby. She would literally bounce off the walls
running around the house. She’s so wonderful ♥

Anyway, about two weeks ago, she started sleeping constantly, and one day
(9/17) I noticed her nose, gums, and pads had turned white…instead of
their normal pink. So I took her in and they took some blood…said that day
that she is VERY anemic L Since that was a Friday, we got the results the
following Monday. FeLV L She barely eats, almost never uses the litter box
(and her urine is pretty dark when she does go), sleeps almost 24 hours a
day, and has lost a bit of weight (not good when she only started at 7lbs
in the first place L).

I got her Pet-tinic vitamins cuz a vet suggested them. I tried to get her
to drink kitten formula cuz I figured part of it’s job is to help kittens
build up their immune systems. She was put on antibiotics the Monday that
her tests came back. After 4-5 days, she began refusing the medicine. It’s
a liquid and she would spit it all back out. So, she probably didn’t get
all she was supposed to.

When she does eat, it is usually just the liquid part of canned cat food.
She is still able to jump off the bed and walk to the kitchen (where the
dry food bowl and litter box are), but usually wears out on her way back
out of the kitchen, and lays down. She is so skinny…I’m not even sure she
has much muscle left. She has always been skinny, but not like this.

Well, a few days ago, her white pads and nose started turning yellow. I
know that has something to do with her liver not working right.

Oh yeah…the way the vet put her anemia…normal range is 29%-45% (or
something like that), and my kitty’s came back at 16% L

Does anyone have any advice as to what we could do to help her? How will we
know if she has pain?

The vet that gave us the results (a substitute cuz regular vet was out for
the week) said if she makes it the next couple months, and seems any
better, to get her re-tested. That some cats fight it off and can test
negative a couple months later. So, that means SOME cats get over this. And
I read online that some cats live for a few years with it, after showing
symptoms. Just gives me a little hope…then I look at her…and she looks so
bad…and I think there isn’t much hope. So hard to watch.

At what point do you give up and have an FeLV+ cat put to sleep? I figured
if she shows signs of being in pain (once I know what those are), or has a
seizure, or absolutely stops eating and drinking anything, that it would be
time. I don’t want her to suffer, but I also want to give her every chance
to survive…ya know?

Anyway, thanks for letting me go on and on…as you can tell this is really
very hard on me emotionally, as I’m sure it is on anyone and everyone who
has to deal with it.

[Felvtalk] Life without Pixie

2009-05-28 Thread G D

Hi everyone.

I really, really appreciate
the support and wisdom this group has provided over the last 3 years
-- when strange things were happening (frothy clear vomit, a non-dilating
pupil) and I didn't know what to do, and especially during the scary and sad
days surrounding Pixie's death. This listserv is an example of the internet at
its finest, bringing together a
warm virtual community of FeLV cat guardians from across the globe. You gave me
the courage to adopt FeLV+ Pixie in the first place, when I was only a foster
parent to her and had no previous experience with + cats.

It's been two weeks without Pixie. Grief feels like a private hell but
apparently I'm going through all the normal stages. I was in bad shape when I
went to pick up her ashes and the woman at the crematorium asked if Pixie had
lived a long life. I could
barely reply that she was still a baby when this disease snatched her.
But once I got her urn home and put it on the mantle, which was one
of her favorite places to perch, I felt strangely relieved: the awful
business of deterioration, dying and death was over. I
attached her collar tag to my keys (the jingling sound of which
made Pixie come running from any corner of the house in the hope she'd
get to go outside). I miss her 100 times day.

I'm comforted to know that many of you have survived the loss of a beloved cat
and have eventually come to love new cats.

Onwards and upwards,

Giselle

[Felvtalk] Pixie is a fluffy orange angel

2009-05-15 Thread G D

It is with profound sadness that I share that my sweet baby Pixie
Katzenellenbogan passed away yesterday evening. She was euthanized by a gentle
and sympathetic vet while I stroked and talked to her. I told her she was deeply
loved.

Yesterday I got second and third opinions from vets I felt were genuinely
interested in Pixie (unlike the apathetic first vet) and it was terrible news
all around (see the bloodwork analysis below). In the last two days she
deteriorated quickly before my eyes despite the regimen of
syringe-administered diluted wet food prescribed by the vet. Her breathing had
become increasingly fast and
shallow (a vet explained she was gasping for oxygen due to the anemia). She was
crying out in
pain, even while lying still, too weak to stand up or walk, and staring
blankly. It was heartbreaking to
see her suffering. Things she once enjoyed held no interest (favorite stinky
foods, lying in a sunbeam, toys, going out in the yard, being brushed).

I emailed the lab results from Pixie's bloodwork to a friend who's a vet in
Canada and her analysis was: There are a couple of things on her bloodwork
that are alarming.
First of all, she is very anemic (ie very low red blood cell count). In
conjunction
with what's going on with her high white blood cell count and platelets though,
I'm less concerned about the anemia itself and more concerned about an
actual leukemia (ie cancer). Her red blood cells and platelets are both very
low
which indicates that the bone marrow is likely diseased and not
producing them properly. On top of that, according to the written
interpretation at the bottom, the red blood cells and platelets that do
exist are all showing signs of immaturity- this means that they are not
sticking around in the bone marrow long enough to mature completely
because something (ie the leukemia that is pumping out cells) is taking
up space in the bone marrow. Besides the changes in her CBC, some other
parameters also point
towards this diagnosis: her calcium level is elevated which is often
seen in association with cancer and her CPK is high which might
indicate muscle wasting. Muscle wasting is often also seen with
cancer.

I thought yesterday was hard (choosing to end Pixie's suffering helping her
cross over) but today is even worse. Waking up with
no Pixie at the foot of the bed, no Pixie meowing for her tuna, no
Pixie
scampering down the stairs. Seeing her things everywhere -- food
bowls, toys, blankets, cat grass, scratching mats, the armchair she shredded, a
brush full of orange
fur -- is devastating. HOW can I possibly live here without her?

Pixie was born in South Philadelphia in spring 2005, rescued from the
streets during a snowstorm in February 2006, and came into my life in
March 2006. She was a feisty little champ like Rocky. Pixie became a
Dutch cat in August 2006 when we moved to the Netherlands (her
permanent final home), flying Northwest so I could bring her in
the cabin, tucking her carrier under the seat in front of me, and carrying a
pop-up make-shift litterbox, food, water, vet documents, and Rescue
Remedy.

She was the perfect companion.

[Felvtalk] Pixie didn't eat during the five days I was away

2009-05-13 Thread G D

Hi everyone,

Pixie is my best buddy and constant companion as I work from home. She's a
4-year old female FeLV+. Last Thursday I went away for 5 days, leaving her home
alone with a neighbor coming over for at least an hour each day to keep her
company, feed wet food, brush, clean litterbox, etc. I returned from my trip
yesterday and immediately knew something was wrong -- Pixie didn't come greet
me and her dry food and water bowls were almost totally full (how I left them
before leaving on Thursday).

The neighbor said Pixie didn't eat her wet food either. She is now much
skinnier around the midsection/haunches and clearly weak. Straight away I
syringe-fed her a wet food water slurry before rushing over to the vet where
the vet on duty found Pixie had lost over 1 lb (since she was last weighed in
2007) and said her gums and eyes looked pale. The vet suggested Pixie might
have nonregenerative anemia linked to bone marrow failure.

She had some blood drawn, got weighed and had temperature taken but that's it.
I'm waiting to hear the blood work results tomorrow. Vet didn't even recommend
how to deal with the weight loss and probable dehydration. Didn't suggest
x-rays either. This woman basically shrugged when I asked about courses of
treatment (like, why bother?) for a FeLV cat who might have anemia.

Bottom line: I'm terrified about Pixie and don't know what to do to help her
recover. She's my second cat ever, and first cat I've been primary caregiver
to. I feel guilty about going away at all last week, but she had been OK on
previous occasions when I travelled. I've been syringe-feeding her slurries
every 2 hours all day but she doesn't seem to be regaining strength and she's
breathing faster than normal and I catch her staring blankly.

Any advice from you guys is much appreciated.
Thanks,
Giselle

Re: Clear vomit in new home

2007-08-12 Thread G D
Thanks for the advice Wendy and Kelley. The good news is that Pixie isn't
vomiting anymore and seems generally healthy (no diarrhea, normal appetite
and energy) so I haven't taken her in to the vet...yet. I adopted Pixie
about 18 months ago back in Philadelphia and got her old vet records from
the woman who rescued her but it doesn't look like Pixie was vaccinated for
panleukopenia OR anything other than rabies! Is there a set of recommended
vaccinations I should take her in for and anything particular for protecting
sensitive FeLV immune systems? I live in the Netherlands where there are
very few FeLV+ cats so I don't really trust my vet to know how to give Pixie
the special treatment she deserves. This listserv is my best resource!

I'm going to try to sterilize the floors in my new house in case the
previous cats had infections that are still hanging around. Diluted bleach
is safe to use right? I don't generally like using harsh chemicals around
Pixie but the goal is to kill viruses here, I guess.

Thanks again!
Giselle

Hi Giselle,

I would take the kitty in. It probably isn't panleuk if she has been
vaccinated - but if she hasn't - she would need immediate and
aggressive treatment in order to live. It isn't really something you
can treat at home.

Taking her in would also make you feel better.:)

 Hi Giselle,

 Welcome to our group!

Like you, I read on the Internet that clear vomit is a symptom of
panleukopenia, which can last in an environment at room temperature for a

Is your kitty vaccinated for this disease? If not, I would take her in
asap, just in case. Is she having diarrhea? I don't want to scare you,
but because of the situation you described (new home with cats) and the
fact that you just moved and your kitty is FeLV+, I would go ahead and take
her in just to be safe. Please keep us posted on her progress Giselle.
Prayers going out that this is nothing.

Hi everyone, 8 days ago I moved with my felv+ cat Pixie into a new house
across town. Pixie seems to be adjusting well to her new environment
(and
hasn't peed anywhere inappropriate so far, as she did at our old apt.
while
we were packing up). She is, however, vomiting clear liquid (sometimes
with

tiny yellow bits in it, maybe mucus?) every couple days, including last
night and this morning. I've also noticed her hiccuping occasionally in
her

 sleep.

A brief Google search has me freaked out about feline distemper and/or
this
being the beginning of the end for my precious Pixie (who is about 2.5
y/o).
She's still eating and drinking normally, although I wasn't adding
L-lysine

to her wet food as I normally do, just for the last few days while
unpacking, and I gave her Rescue Remedy on move day and following day
only.
And she actually seems to be enjoying the new house (great views of a
canal

with ducks, trees with birds) and her energy level is normal. She's also
sniffing every nook and cranny in this place with enthusiasm. I've got a
Feliway (Comfort Zone) diffuser plugged in too.

At first I thought she was just vomiting up Rescue Remedy (if that's
even
normal...). Do you think her immune system was compromised by the move
(and

the fact I wasn't giving her L-lysine)? Two indoor-outdoor cats lived in
this house until a couple weeks ago, and a neighbor's cat frequently
appears
on the 2nd floor back terrace and it seems he left a turd there (either
him
or one of the two previous cats). Pixie never goes out there but is
allowed
to walk a few feet into the back garden when I'm out there. Is it
possible
she's picked up a virus or bacterial infection left by these previous
cats

or is breathing too much dust? Does she need to go to the vet?

Thanks! Any advice is certainly appreciated!

Treating nose sore

2006-08-27 Thread G D
Hello everyone, I've been a silent member of the listserv since March and have been learning a lot from your discussions and feeling your sorrows as loved ones pass away. I'm now writing for advice -- my Pixie is a largely asymptomatic 2 y/o felv positive and in early August we moved from Philadelphia to the Netherlands (flew Northwest so she could be in the cabin with me).
A few days ago I noticed a small bald patch on the side of her nose and it's been growing in size and is now looking red and irritated. I've been looking up possible causes and I'm scared that it could be feline calicivirus because she has eye discharge, a wet nose, audible breathing, and the occasional sneeze. Does anyone have experience with calicivirus, especially in combination with felv?
Perhaps another, happier, explanation could be that Pixie is weirded out by the new environment and is over-grooming? I tried putting Polysporin on the sore a couple of times today and she's successfully groomed it off almost immediately. Any tips on treating the sore -- possible viral causes aside?
Pixie is eating normally and seems fine other than the aforementioned symptoms. I should also note that I gave her dewormer for roundworm two weeks ago, after finding some worms in her vomit. Not sure those worms are totally gone, either. Any advice would be much appreciated! She's my first felv cat and I'm thinking of adopting another (Dutch) one soon, once I know what's up with Pixie... and where toeven find a felv cat in the Netherlands.
Cheers, Giselle

UPDATE FROM THE FIELD:
Animal Rescue New Orleans has joined forces with Alley Cat Allies to
save
literally thousands of cats fending for themselves on New Orleans
streets.
Starving and dehydrated, some are feral. Others are companion animals
who
slipped through windows or blown out doors in the aftermath of
Katrina.

Animal guardians continue to contact us for help trapping their
traumatized
cats. Most are so afraid they withdraw from sight inside mud-filled
homes or
under trash piles. They will not even respond to the familiar voice
of their
own caretakers! Many of these homes are slated to be bulldozed. We
fear for

the safety of these cats... Will you help?

November 2: We rescued an emaciated cat living amid the debris of a
destroyed home. This cat was experiencing liver failure by the time we
reached her. Sadly, the cat died while in transit to the emergency
clinic...

November 7: Three dead cats. Three separate houses. Two of the cats
expired
on front porches alongside empty food and water bowls. The other was
found
on a back porch where no food/water were available. These animals did
not
succumb to hurricane or flood. They died over the past days from
STARVATION.

Animals do not have access to food scraps in the trash. New Orleans is
presently a city without its normal population, and thus without its
normal
garbage output. Puddles are scarce. It has not rained for over one
month.
Residents cannot sustain these animals because there are simply not
enough

 residents in New Orleans.

Reserve days, weeks—whatever you can—to help New Orleans animals.
JUST DO

IT. All of your questions are answered below.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS/SITUATION:
We are assembling a CAT TRAPPING TEAM to capture these animals and
reunite
them with guardians. Once that task is completed, we’ll trap other
cats in

areas marked for demolition. WE NEED:

• People experienced with cat trapping.

• People experienced with cat handling.

• People skilled in caring for cats.

Bottom line? WE NEED CAT PEOPLE NOW!

EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY!
PLEASE POST FAR WIDE
FEEL FREE TO SEND TO THE MEDIA IF YOU HAVE ANY CONTACTS.
The Cat Camp Foundation MUST move cats NOW!
We have received another letter from the Township of Tabernacle stating
that
they are filing a criminal complaint against the shelter for being in

violation of ZONING LAWS. This whole problem is being caused by a
neighbor who
doesn’t like the volunteers coming to the shelter and has complained
that the
shelter is a “business”. That is what the violation is all about. We
have
to find another shelter / rescue / home for about 25 indoor semi -feral
cats
as well as well as 12 Leukemia positive cats IMMEDIATELY! These cats
are in
grave danger of euthanization by the ruling of the court.
Somebody PLEASE help us to save these cats. We have placed all of the

adoptables, the Aids positive cats and some of the Leukemia positive
cats. We
desperately need help to save the lives of these semi-ferals and
Leukemia cats.

Please contact us at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) if you can do anything at all to
help us.
Thank you and bless you.
Ruthie

Re: Effie has her angel's wings

2005-03-04 Thread S D
I am really sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a good friend. I noticed in another email you mentioned that it was like Effie was there with you. I do believe that those times that you see them out of the corner of your eye or sense them walk by -that they are really there with you in spirit, watching over you happliy.

Effie left us this morning and my friend,Liz, who passed away last week,is taking care of her in heaven. The pain from the growing mass against her spine took away her quality of life. It was awfully hard. It IS hard. You understand, we continue to look at their favorite places and those places are empty ... and I cry for her. My heart is broken.

Thank you everyone for support and feedback. Without these groups, she would never have lived this long or this well.

maybe this will help others too?...

2005-02-17 Thread S D
Hello again,

In my struggle to understand and accept the fact that Scullyis no longer aroundI havediscovered a few things that give me comfort. Maybe this will comfort others too.

Cats are apparently notorious for hiding pain. I read somewhere that the stronger thebond between a cat and it's owner -the harder they will try to cover up any pain. Then I think about Scully in her last week with me. Despite the fact that she was quickly fading - she tried hard to be herself. She would continue to follow me around as always and to sit up on top of me. How loyal can you get? Reading through the archives there are countless stories ofkitties in theirlast moments -it sounds as if every one of them fought hardto show you that they were okay the best that they could. That says a lot about how loved and how loving these kitties were.

I also take comfort in the fact that she would not have survived more than a year had I not taken her from the situation she was in. Maybe sticking around so long was her way of saying thanks for giving me a chance.

When I think of the past 9-10 years I couldn't imagine a better sidekick. She was with me through very rough times and very stressful times- both financially and emotionally. It has only been these past 3 years that I have really gotten things together. I met my husband and things have been stable for the first time in a very long time (if not in my life). I think that it was maybe part of her mission - to be a loyal and loving sidekick until I got it together. It's almost like she knew things would be fine with me now and she could go. When I think of the fact thatScully stuck around for 10 years - probably fighting more than I'll ever know I feel I was so lucky to have had her. I know humans that are not as loyal.

I know some people who think that it's crazy to spend your $, time or affection on "just a pet". It is also comforting to read through these emails and know that other people see the value and friendship that a furryfamily member provides. Also, that there are cats out there, pos. or neg., that are being so loved and cared for.

Thanks for listening. I had to get these thoughts off my chest. My husband works out of town all week and is only home on the week-ends.
