[filmscanners] Re: Protective coatings for prints?
Try clear plastic bags from Impact Images. I've been using them for about 15 years to display and sell my prints. http://www.clearbags.com/ They come in all standard sizes and have a fold over adhesive strip to seal. Larry This may have been addressed previously, if it has I apologize. Is there a protective coating that can be applied to prints made on glossy media from ink jet printers? The prints from my Epson 1200 are very sticky and, occasionally, I make prints on glossy paper that require a good bit of handling. Unless the inks are universally soluble, it would seem to me that there should be some kind of coating, preferably an aerosol, that could be applied. *** Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com *** Unsubscribe by mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED], with 'unsubscribe filmscanners' or 'unsubscribe filmscanners_digest' (as appropriate) in the message title or body

filmscanners: Lossless JPEG Rotate ???
I've been using ACDSee for three + years to view my images. It wasn't until last night I found out that ACDSee only has lossless JPEG rotate if the image is divisible by 16. Not that it makes a difference if your viewing full size images from digital cameras, because those pixel dimensions are divisible by 16. 1600x1200 or 2048x1536 etc... But I've been sizing my images at either 450 or 500 pixels (long dimension) and during a quick test I found that ACDSee trimmed my image to be divisible by 16. My CoolPix Gallery has 500 pixel JPEGs. I rotated one in ACDSee and found that it was trimmed to 496 pixels. I rotated the same image in Photoshop and found that it remained full. Just something to be aware of. If you're going to rotate your sized JPEGs for printing and such, be careful. Larry *** Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com ***

Re: filmscanners: Cannot open scanned TIFF in Photoshop
Barbara, Not knowing what your problem is, I can say that my TIF files are between 55 and 60 megs on scanning at 4000 PPI. I don't have my scanner turned on but are there TIF saving options in the software? Might you have set it for 200% scaling, which would make the file size twice what it really is? Larry The file is 108MB big. I have 1GB of RAM. Photoshop 5.5 can use 75%, which amounts to 690M. I have two scratch disks defined, one has 4GB free, the other has 55GB free (and that space is defragmented and really unused.) My windows swap file is 2.5GB large. I still get the error 'Could not open the document because there is not enough memory (RAM).' An image scanned at 3000dpi (62MB) would not open, either. One scanned at 2000dpi (27M)opens. PS tells me that this file uses scr: 41M/690M. And: I can open 4 copies of this 27MB file (amounting to 108MB) without error message. Re: filmscanners: Cannot open scanned TIFF in Photoshop
Have you tried opening them in any other graphics programs, or image viewing programs. Try Irfanview, it's free: http://stud1.tuwien.ac.at/~e9227474/ Larry I used Insight for scanning, and the 55/60 MB size is for scanning 8bit. Raw scanning and scanning 12bit produce twice the file size - around 110MB. But I also scanned at 8 bit and 4000dpi, and PS would not open it. Well, the files do have the tif extension. Even renaming to TIF does not help. The 'magic' size for opening is somewhere between 42,457 (opens) and 43,393 (does not open) KB. Then they would always be saved as compressed, right? And none of them should open, right? *** Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com ***

Re: filmscanners: scanning automation
Tomasz, Sounds like you should have your images scanned to a Kodak Photo CD. Then you have your choice of pixel size and resolution (pixels per inch) to open the images at. If you open all the images at one session, the open menu will retain the same setting from image to image. Then do a batch processing in Photoshop and you're done, in a flash. Polaroid Insight allows you to input a fixed target pixel dimensions. That, combined with your scan resolution setting might get you in the ballpark. But the scanner can't process your images after the scan. You have to scan at the desired output resolution to save the time afterwards. Larry I wonder if with any of the 4000dpi scanners I would be able to scan the whole roll of film and tell the scanning software to automatically adjust color correction, contrast, sharpen to a desired degree and save the files in desired resolution, ie 500x800 pixels and name the files as I require. Is it possible at all? *** Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com ***
Re: filmscanners: ReSize, ReSample or ReScan - 4Web ?
Hi Dave, If the only use of your picture is a 500 pixel web images, you can do as I do. I've been scanning with the Sprintscan 4000 for over a year and 95% of the time, my intended output is a 450 pixel jpeg. I scan at 1200 ppi so I have a 5 megabyte (approximate) image to work with. I like that file size because it gives me an adequate amount of information to work with. Then I work on the image in Photoshop after archiving the original scan. In general, my work flow goes something like this: Straighten the image Crop out the border created by the slide mount Save As a PSD and archive as the original scan Run whatever processing is necessary Resize to 72 PPI at 450 pixels (long dimension) Add copyright as an active text layer (usually 14 point with Technical font) Save As using the designated 450- as a prefix Flatten and add a single pixel stroke in a complimentary color that the web page background will be (if the page is white I add a black stroke, if the page is black I add a white stroke) Unsharp mask Save For Web and my resulting file size is approximately 20k to 30k If the page background is to be white, just prior to adding unsharp mask, I open the folder of 450 pixel Photoshop files and do a batch drop shadow in PhotoImpact, saving as PSD's Then finish the operation in Photoshop again. The reason I use PhotoImpact for the drop shadow is because it's much easier and can give a uniform drop shadow in a batch operation and Photoshop can't: http://bermangraphics.com/tips/photoimpactds.htm Larry If you want to put a picture in your web with 500 pixels wide, what is better? Are you actually expecting to scan to a folder on a CD that you haven't burned yet? It sounds like what you're expecting to do. Scan and output as a NON compressed file format, like TIF or PSD (Photoshop file). Scan at a ppi that is larger than your expected usage of the images. Save the scans in a folder on your hard drive. Save the raw scans by burning a CD of that folder they are saved in. If your objective is to archive those raw scans then you are finished. But first, I would suggest making a second CD and test them to make sure the pictures open. Then you can safely delete the hard drive folder containing those raw scans. There are many more issues about what your work flow should be which you will discover by following this forum for a while. I use Adaptec's Easy CD software also and have never had a problem with it. But if you're thinking that you can bypass that hard drive folder step, it just doesn't work that way. Larry I am trying to create CDs from images on my flatbed scanner (Epson 1200U) to the CD. I follow the steps but I am unable to read the result. I have a Dell computer with Windows Me, 256 mg of RAM, a CD ROM bay and a CD RW bay, and an Adaptec CD writer system that came with the computer. *** Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com http://IRDreams.com http://ImageCompress.com ***
Re: filmscanners: PS 6.0 v. PS 5.0 LE v. Jasc Paintshop Pro 7.02
My suggestion, if you're used to the Photoshop interface, is to at least upgrade to Photoshop Elements. It's got more to offer than LE. Though I do recommend full Photoshop. Here's a link to read more about it: http://www.adobe.com:80/products/photoshopel/indepth.html Here's a forum on egroups: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/photoshop_elements Larry But what about lower-class people like me? I'm an amateur, with very modest equipment (an Acer Scanwit 2740S and an Epson 900), very much in the learning mode. Should I shell out the $500+ bucks, plus the learning time, to get a grip on 6.0? Will 5.0 LE serve me better, at least in the learning phase and possibly for all time? And what about the Jasc program? It receives rave reviews in popular (i.e. non-professional) reviews, especially in computer publications, but I don't recall any reference to it in this list. Why not? Re: filmscanners: Digital Shortcomings
I agree. I've noticed those commercials also. If it were three years ago (or maybe even two) I might have gotten one for family snapshots. Or would have at least bought one for my 80 year old father. Smart use of current technology. Maybe Kodak's not as backward as they lead us to believe. After all, they did it before Fuji did Larry Anyone who has been near a TV in the last month or two, at least in North America, has seen the Kodak camera ads which incorporate a digital image recorder AND normal 35mm or APS film. The system allows you to review the last image (at least) taken by the camera (on film), and if it didn't work, you can shoot again. This, to me is very innovative and smart use of technology, and not too costly either. You don't need a lot of memory, as it probably only records the last shot taken. The idea is not to keep the digital image, so it probably is not in high res either. It does require a color LCD panel, but those small ones much cost a few bucks these days. I wish my SLR had a device like that I could add to it, and if it were set up to mimic the basic characteristics of neg and or slide film, it would even reduce some of the need for bracketing. *** Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com http://IRDreams.com http://ImageCompress.com ***

Jules, Are these CD's for archiving purposes, or just to run a slide show? Do you want the thumbnails to open the full size images when clicked on? Re: filmscanners: OK, Vuescan is driving me nuts
Or move it incrementally one pixel at a time in any direction using the arrow keys. Larry You definitely can reset the crop outline in Photoshop. Or alter it. Easily. In contrast with PSP, or some other programs, what you do in PS is: 1 Use Marquee tool to draw box outline. It can also be a circle, etc. 2.To add to the box, hold shift key down (don't have to) and redraw box, or just redraw the box. Curser defaults to +, so the default is to add to the box. If you want to subtract in any way from the box, hold shift and Option key down (at least on the Mac). Box will redraw to smaller box. If you hold down just the Option key when redrawing the marquee outline, the curser shows a - (minus), meaning that wnen you crop, the contents of that outline will be deleted from the image, leaving you with a frame section of the image. Option/Shift gets you a smaller box; the curser contains neither a +, or -. 3. Alternately, to resize the marquee outline arbitrarily, any side, execute transform selection from the Select Menu. You have other choices as well to modify the marquee outline, such precise grow/shrink. 4. After selecting Transform Selection, you have handles at corners to rotate, pull/push, you can grab any side to pull/push, and in general do anything you want to modify the marquee outline. Extremely userful when attempting to level an image with the horizon. When done, push enter 5. And, you can go back to any stage at any time to redo (if not saved and reopened) by looking over the history.. (That is something I would like PS to incorporate - saved history - but it would significantly increase the size of the file) Nope. Photoshop didn't leave anything out. And you can do anything of the above in 8 or 16 bit mode, plus use the marquee outlines in a variety of other ways, such as have more than one marquee; e.g. one box inside the other - for a cutout frame, for example, Or two independent marquees. Or the marquee outline can become a mask, which can be saved. On and on. *** Larry Berman http://BermanGraphics.com http://IRDreams.com http://ImageCompress.com ***

Re: filmscanners: Still Having Trouble with Win2K
Hi Mike, It's actually happening either with OptiCal on or off. You can definitely see that OptiCal is loading because the monitor changes color as the splash screen flashes. But then again, it isn't the color temperature which worries me, it's the fact that the monitors seem to be running at less than 16 bit color. When I change it to16 bit color on my Win98SE system, the color picker looks better than 32 bit color on my Win2K system. I posted earlier about the physical differences in the Dell Trinitron monitors. I think my next step is to get Dell to send me the same 21 inch monitor that my Win98SE system has. It looks much better than the P series Trinitrons, which look colder and don't seem to be capable of 32 bit color. Maybe they're optimized for Word and Excel, since they come from the small business division. If the different monitors don't solve the problem I'll reformat and install Win98SE on my new machine and try that before returning the system. I've never encountered a problem that I couldn't solve (or live with) in Win98SE. Thanks for your reply, Larry the one thing that occurs to me is the color temp that you have the monitors set for... could your new Dells somehow be overriding the color temp you have them set for when you do your color calibration? Graphics Workshop Professional can write the Kodak PhotoCD format, as I previously posted. From the FAQ page on the web site http://www.mindworkshop.com/alchemy/gwsproqa.html Q: Graphic Workshop Professional can write PCD files. Does this mean it can create complete Kodak PhotoCDs? A: Sadly, no. While Kodak has licensed us the technology to create PCD files a useful format for high quality imaging they have thus far refused to disclose the details of the other bits required to create a complete Kodak PhotoCD which would be readable by Kodak's set-top players. They seem to want to keep this facility for their own authoring packages. Graphic Workshop Professional can create multiple-resolution PCD files which are effectively identical to those created for a commercial PhotoCD. If you write these to a CD-ROM using the directory structure of a Photo-CD as discussed in the Reference document for Graphic Workshop you'll have a pseudo-PhotoCD readable by most PC-based applications, such as Graphic Workshop Professional itself. We're still working on the rest of the PhotoCD standard, but at the moment, this is as good as it gets. you wrote: There are a whole host of imaging programs which can handle or open PhotoCD format, including Photoshop. I can't find anywhere - I have tried dye sub (too soft) and a local co. who have a posh Noritsu dig printer which outputs onto proper paper, but that manages to posterise skin tones - an admitted deficiency of the printer according to the lab, not my scans. ::: Larry Berman Web Sites for Artists: http://BermanGraphics.com Digital Infrared at: http://IRDreams.com Compare Image Compression from the top Graphics Programs: http://ImageCompress.com Explore the Art Show Jury process from a web site: http://ArtShowJury.com :::

Re: filmscanners: Puzzled about display resolution
When I was trying to get my monitors to match visually, I scanned the Macbeth Color Checker and made it the wallpaper on both my systems. It made it easy to see at a glance how far off they were to each other. It also made for an interesting visual effect when someone first walked into the room and was confronted with four monitors containing the same blocks of color. Any thoughts on the concept of using it for a visual comparison??? I posted this twice, as did Frank. The Matrox G450, with the latest drivers, now supports dual monitors at independent resolution on Win2k. It has always supported dual monitor independent resolution on Win98. Larry I'm in the market for a dual-monitor card but I like my NVIDIA TNT with the new Detonator 3 driver which has the numerical gamma - that is the feature that has allowed me to match my monitor to my print without software other than Corel's "Color Wizard" which is essentially a screen-matching exercise. I just tried out the ATI Radeon VE but no gamma control so it's going back. Since I don't have an extra slot available it's either the Matrox G450 which is better rated, or the NVIDIA GeForce2 MX which uses the Detonator 3 driver but doesn't allow independent screen resolutions for my new 19" Trinitron and my old Dell SVGA 14 or 15" (unless anyone knows of any others on the market for a PC?) ::::::: Larry Berman Web Sites for Artists: http://BermanGraphics.com Compare Image Compression from the top Graphics Programs: http://ImageCompress.com Explore the Art Show Jury process from a web site: http://ArtShowJury.com :::
filmscanners: Macbeth Color Checker download
From me? I've created a downloadable zip file: http://BermanGraphics.com/downloads/macbethcolorchecker.zip A point here. I scanned it using VueScan at 1200 DPI and it scanned into sRGB color space. I then reduced it to 72 PPI in Photoshop so it's about 1.5 megabytes. I would guess that the only thing it would be good for, unless you have your monitor set for default color to sRGB, is to visually compare two displays. filmscanners: Problems with my monitor and graphics card
Trials of a new OS and related defective hardware. I've been fighting to try and get my monitors to match for the past week. We'll my problem finally met it's match I received the spyder and Optical software today and tried to calibrate my new Win2K 21inch Trinitron. It seems that I was right all along. The monitor is defective. It saw the grey logo as purple and the tech support at ColorVision told me to send the monitor back. It seems that it wasn't supposed to have any color, only shades of gray. In addition I also received a 19 inch Trinitron that I had ordered as my second monitor (on the Matrox G450 card) and the colors, out of the box, blew away both 21 inch monitors. They are now going back for replacements. To complicate things even more, as soon as I hooked up the 19 inch along side the 21 inch, the 21 inch (number 1 monitor) went to 16 color (might have been 256 color), even though it said 32 bit color in the properties box. I spent an hour on the phone with Matrox support and they are sending me a new G450 card tomorrow. All in all, I now have a great looking 19 inch single monitor on my new Win2K dual monitor system. Maybe I can finally get some work done today. Re: filmscanners: Canon FS2710 and Windows 2000 SCSI not working
Hi Sam, I'm still having a problem that Photoshop isn't able to access the Epson Twain driver for my Epson Perfection 1200S. The Polaroid SS4000 doesn't use the same twain interface, only it's proprietary software, which could include Silverfast, Insight, or VueScan. But I am able to scan with the Epson flatbed through VueScan (Thanks ED). Does anyone know why I can't get Photoshop to use the Epson Twain with Win2K? Larry * Here's a copy of the post that worked me through a similar problem to yours: It appears that what you'll need is the NTASPI32 from. 1. Install new drivers for the AdvanSys ABP-3922-00 SCSI card from http://www.connectcom.net/downloads/fastultra.html. Connect.com is the new name for the AdvanSys site. This installed a driver called Fast Ultra Narrow SCSI, which then showed up properly in Device Manager. Win 2K itself had a driver for the AdvanSys card which loaded automatically on setup, but it was out-dated. 2. Install new NTASPI32 with the installer from http://advansys.com/support/ntwnaspi32.html. A trick here was that the Adaptec installer did not work(gave a message that there was no Adaptec card on my system). The Polaroid Support staff and some others advised me to use the Adaptec site, but that would never work for me. Also, the AdvanSys CD that originally came with my SS4000(December 1999) had outdated drivers. In this AdvanSys site, there was a choice of a GUI installer or a simple system where you just copy the NTASPI and WNASPI files to two different WIN NT folders. I used the GUI and it was all automatic. 3. Now I had the right drivers and ASPI layer, but the scanner was still not recognized. I had to physically remove the AdvanSys card and reboot with the card out of the system(no longer showed up in the Device Manager). Then I shut down, put the AdvanSys card back in, and started up again. Voila! Works pefectly so far with the SS4000 using either Vuescan or PolaColor Insight. *** At 07:14 PM 3/17/01 +, you wrote: I had my Canon 2710 working on Windows 2000 at an earlier date with much screwing around with it but after reloading my PC after a crash I can not get it to go for the life of me. filmscanners: Trying to Calibrate Monitors to Match
Now that I've got my new Win2K system up and running (still waiting for a second Sony monitor from Dell), I'm finding that it's impossible to get the monitors to look alike (by eye) between my Win98SE system and the Win2K system. The grays on the Win2K are much colder and lighter in comparing Photoshop's tool bars and menus. I know that there's been a few threads in the past on calibration, and it something I now have to take a hard look at. I was looking at the ColorCal system: http://www.colorcal.com Monitor Spyder with PhotoCal Software for $224 Monitor Spyder with OptiCal Software for $399 optional RGB profile for an additional $199 or less as a bundle (because I'll probably be getting an Epson printer in a about two months). Is anyone using one of these calibration systems with Win2K? Which would you recommend to calibrate and match monitors across the two Windoze operating systems (Win2K and Win98SE), and across the dual monitors on each individual system. If you want me to keep this off the forum e-mail me privately ( mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ). I'll be happy to take all the responses and create a page for them on my web site where it can remain as a reference. But I know I consider it a relevant topic and would want to read them here. RE: filmscanners: SCSI card not recognized by Win2K
Yes, of course I tried other slots. The card didn't show up in the device manager. I also tried downloading the ASPI utility from Adaptec but it wouldn't install because I didn't have an Adaptec card on the system. The card was not in the device manager, but the scanner was after installing Insight but nothing I would do, short of scanning from the older computer. would work. I'm tired of troubleshooting back and forth between computers running different operating systems. If anyone has a logical suggestion that a will make a $79 purchase unnecessary I'll evaluate it. Even if I get it working, I still need a card for the other computer so I might as well get one that's actually Win2K ready. Larry BTW, it's PCI. Re: filmscanners: Graphics Cards
Colin, I've not yet used the card. It was the least expensive option when ordering my new system from Dell. I went that route because I had planned on getting a dual monitor card anyway. That being said, I'm sure it's fine for graphics. It just doesn't support dual monitors which is my preference.
