Re: [Finale] 2k8 file conversion from 2K7

2007-07-13 Thread Chuck Israels
I think I get it now. The Bill Duncan fonts - for which I hadn't
thought to install the FAN files into 2k8, push other objects out of
the way when the FAN files are absent, so it looks as if normal
objects are also messed up when, in fact, only the non-Finale fonts
are the culprits.

So take Darcy's advice, if the problem appears, and copy all
"foreign" FAN files into the new version's Font Annotation folder,
and it should clear up.

Did you try replacing (if only temporarily) the FAN files in
Finale 2008 with your 2007 ones? It is possible the settings have
been changed.

This is just a guess, not a proven solution.

I wonder if Chuck's problem goes back to the Fin2005 origins of his
file.

I just opened a Fin2007 file in Fin2008 and noticed no such
displacement of expressions and articulations.

As with each new version over the years, I think that any such
misbehavior may well be on a file-by-file basis, and the further
back the origins of the file, the worse the potential problems we
need to be aware of.

2007-07-12 Thread Chuck Israels

Hi Darcy,

This affects Maestro expressions too, so I don't know - but I'll do
what you suggest, because it makes perfect sense for the BD fonts.

BTW, I'll be in NY from the 22nd to the 28th - playing at Kitano on
the 25th - with Don Friedman and Joe Hunt, and then recording with
them in NJ on the 26th. I'll be staying at Dave Berger's apt on
106th and B'way, and I'll have my cell phone. Be glad to hear from
you and to get together if you will have any time during those days.

Fond regards,

Chuck

I guess there will be a period of this kind of thing, but this is
not the only anomaly I've found in working today. There has been
strange page layout behavior in linked part management where the
defined parameters in the management dialog are ignored when the
parts are created. It's easy enough to resolve, and the file
originated in 2005, so that may have made a contribution, but I am
suspicious - casting a wary eye.

Re: [Finale] 2k8 file conversion from 2K7

2007-07-12 Thread Chuck Israels

Aha, Darcy was right. (Why am I not surprised?)

I copied in FAN files for the Bill Duncan fonts, and everything fell
into place. What had confused me was the fact that there were normal
Maestro expressions that were also displaced. They are now appearing
correctly (along with the BD fonts). Hard to wrap my head around that.

Anyway, that seems to be the solution.

I'll report it, but the composer has requested that I not send the

Thanks Jim - and Randolph.

This is not consistent behavior, some files have been OK - which
makes me that it's not so simple as switching FAN file folders. I'll
report in tomorrow when I have heard from MM support. I hope they
can duplicate the behavior. Jim, maybe it would be a good idea for
you to report to them as well, and send them the file.

Thanks again,

I should also add this as a reminder to anyone upgrading to Finale
2008. Don't reuse the preference files from previous versions of
Finale by renaming them and putting them in the new Finale 2008
folder.

I used to do this as a matter of course to save time, but the
conversion from 2006 to 2007 had some weird anomalies when you did
that. I can only assume that it wouldn't be good practice to reuse
them anymore.
