if it is only notes you need (i.e. no alphabetical characters) and
they need to be aligned with specific notes in the staf, use a
different layer and hide ledger notes, this way the spacing and
positioning of the musical symbols will be exactly as other musical
elements in the score, which is NOT the case when entering it as text
(without piddling like a maniac).

i have done this in the past to indicate rhythms/durations that
weren't obvious from the stuff written in the staff, reduced to 75%
and in parentheses.

another solution, if it is rhythms you want to write which do NOT
align with the music in the staff, try the ossia tool.

[Finale] Dotted Quarter Notes

2007-05-15 Thread George Ports
Is there a way to type in a dotted quarte note (stem up or down) using Maestro
fonts with one stroke instead of typing a note and then adding a dot? Am using
winfin2006.
Thanks for any help.

The short answer is no.

There is no single character that is a dotted quarter in Maestro.

Why do you need this? There might be a better alternative.

Do you mean in a word processor or in Finale as music? In Finale, not as
such, but I guess you could easily program a macro using ikey or
Quickeys, which types 5.. Or was that not what you meant?

I need a dotted quarter note as an indicator above the staff over a quarter
rest that is in the staff. I could type the quarter note (Maestro) and then
add a period for the dot but, was hoping for an easier way.
Now I'm having trouble creating an eighth note that has a (beam)
extention instead of a flag. I can see how to do it at the end of a couple
of eighths but, not just one eighth. I really searched a lot in the help
section to no avail.

[Finale] Dotted Quarter Notes is Sovled

2007-05-15 Thread George Ports
Aha!!!
Just solved the problem by merely typing (Maestro) q for the quarter note
and k for the dot!! The problem with the way I had it was that the dot was too
low in relation to the quarter note. That was because I typed a period instead
of a (k).
Thanks to Christopher and Jonannes for taking your valuable time to help me.

Make new text expression. Make the font Maestro 24. Type q, then
period. Done. What could be easier?

If you want the dot higher (I might) then select it and adjust the
baseline in the Text menu. You can make it farther away by adding
spaces in between of varying point sizes (darn Finale to heck for
making routine kerning adjustments such a kludge!)

Yeah, this one is tougher. The beam is normally drawn as a line in
Finale, and it is not a character.

I would create this one as a Shape expression. Add a text character q
in Maestro font, then draw a line of appropriate thickness for the
beam. I always hate the Shape designer in Finale, as it is so
ungraceful and unforgiving. Read up on the Shape Designer in the manual.

Get the Bach font, which is meant for this kind of thing. It is
available here:

If you need to ask this you've obviously not entered much music in 6/8
where some of the music moves at the dotted-quarter beat. :-)

Re: [Finale] Dotted Quarter Notes

2007-05-15 Thread Christopher Smith

George,

Actually, the best solution might be to use the Bach font, as someone
(Johannes?) suggested. If you don't need the actual typeface of
Maestro, creating the expression in the Bach font would be the
easiest, and the font is free. It has half-beamed eighths in it.

Hmm? Hitting 5-period on the numeric keypad is just as fast as 5
alone. Right index on the 5, ring finger on the decimal; lead with
the index like a grace note and it is really fast.

Now, tuplets and grace notes slow me down somewhat, but nothing to
worry about. Same with switching layers. But the biggest slowdown by
far is still lyrics, despite all the improvements in entry and
editing. Hyphenation... arrgh! I get SO many lyrics that are
improperly hyphenated, and for me to correct them means dictionary
time (because I don't know what the correct way is off the top of my
head).

Hey Chris,

This is why OS X's built-in dictionary service (based on the New
Oxford American) comes in handy -- open TextEdit, copy lyrics into a
new empty document. Format - Make Plain Text (cmd-shift-T). Double-
click a word for which you want to check the hyphenation, then right-
click (or ctrl-click) and choose Look Up in Dictionary.

Easy and fast.
