Re: [Flashcoders] Jabber - XIFF Dreamhost
Hey Jesse, I don't know about the XMPP implementation that Dreamhost uses, but some of these servers don't like to return a null byte to terminate the stanza which Flash XMLSocket requires. Sometimes you need to give the Jabber server a special initiator to let it know that you are a Flash client and therefore need this null terminator. Sean Voisen originally wrote the XIFF library for the 1.4 version of the JabberD server. This was before he joined with Jive. Anyway, that server didn't require you to pass anything special to connect with a Flash client so the initial handshake was simply: ?xml version=\1.0\?stream:stream to= Jive's server, Wildfire, requires that you pass it a flash:stream to let it know. I actually helped Sean out with getting that connect method of the XMPPConnection class to have mutiple streamTypes cause I was using another server (Antepo) at the time and the default intiator didn't work. So, now there are four different stream types to choose from depending on the server you are using. I would suggest that you try out all of the streamTypes and see if one of those works. If Dreamhost uses the 2.x version of JabberD, then I think you might be screwed, as those guys are hard core and said that returning a null byte is not part of the XMPP spec, and they wanted to be %100 compliant. At least this was the case a year ago. Anyway, feel free to IM me if you have any questions, I might be able to help as I do use the XIFF library on a daily basis. Good luck. -Chris P.S. You may want to add this method to the XMPPConnection class, as it will allow you to pass plain Strings to the server thus allowing you to try out things easier. /** * Sends a raw String or XML object through to the XMPP server. * Typically used for debugging purposes. (added by Chris Allen on 04/18/2005) * * @availability Flash Player 7 * @param o The raw data to send. */ public function sendRaw( o:Object ):Void { sendXML(o); } On 2/12/06, JesterXL [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Anyone gotten the Jive Software XIFF classes to work with the jabber servers at Dreamhost? [Flashcoders] Ensuring commercial is played before the video while keeping .FLV external
Hi all, One of the services of my website will be providing flash videos to distributors. We have developed a player swf that takes in an introductory swf (mostly likely an ad/commercial) and the .flv video file as FlashVars parameters. Is there a way to provide access to these files to clients and ensure that the ad/commercial is played? Specifically, the problem we are running into is that the client could develop their own flash player and just play our .flv file. Can we somehow hide the flv file name, while still using external playback? Is there a way to get around the problem without combining the commercial and video into one file? (If not, anyone know of an easy way to combine files dynamically?) Any feedback/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! When I got non-technical people to test my Central applications (in the Central environment, not the browser) they would still ask Where's the back button?. Other users tune up their custom keyboards and mice to use the built-in Back/Forward capability, others become very used to the keyboard shortcuts. Still others religiously use the browser's navigation buttons. Last summer I project I was involved with, for a short while, required browser navigation to work, while still minimizing load times for Flash. I left before that was implemented, so can't tell you how it was done. So, to answer the original question - yes, ideally provide browser navigation. Realistically, some Flash applications are so complex it's not practical. Example? www.gigagolf.com, no back button, v. impressive RIA. [Flashcoders] Select all text onSetFocus of a TextField
This seems like it should be easily solved, but I keep running into an issue so I was hoping I could get some fresh ideas from you guys. I want to have default text in a TextField, and when a user clicks into it I want all of the text to be selected as if it was tabbed into. I currently have added an onSetFocus method to the TextField which in turn calls a setInterval for another method called selectText. The selectText method calls Selection.setSelection (0, field.text.length); Now this works wonderfully if you click to the right of the text, but if you click in the middle of the text, when the mouse lets up the text that is selected is 0 to the caret index. Even doing that, a user could still find the remote file by using a tool like Fiddler (http://www.fiddlertool.com). If the user is willing to go through the trouble of bypassing your current method, it's unlikely they would be stopped by obscuring the filename. Way off topic in my response -- why do you want to that? Just to piss off your potential customers? You have the right to waste their valuable time? What arrogance. Splash screens are bad enough, this is WORSE!!! Do you create content for free? Someone has to pay for the content to be created and the bandwidth required to stream it to all and sundry, and more often that not that means subscription or advertising. Unless you're willing to pay for the content, you're going to have to put up with commercials. From a personal perspective, I hate adverts. I hate having to go to the cinema and sit through 15-20 minutes of adverts before the film starts, but I like the fact that I'm only paying £5 to watch a big blockbuster that cost hundreds of millions to make. If cinemas were to scrap ads, we'd all be paying upwards to £10 (or local equivalent) to watch a movie. Unfortunately, you either have to get used to this kind of situation, or get a big bucket of sand to hide your head in. :o) Steve -- Steve Webster Head of Development Featurecreep Ltd. www.featurecreep.com 14 Orchard Street, Bristol, BS1 5EH 0117 905 5047 ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com

Any idea how this can be done with an embedded video? If memory serves, the argument to attachAudio() must be either a Microphone object or a NetStream object playing a video, so this approach won't work. Try initializing the Sound object with a reference to the MovieClip containing the embedded video. I just tried the following and it worked ok, var __myVideoContainer:MovieClip = this.attachMovie( myVideo, vid, 2 ); var __sound:Sound = new Sound(__myVideoContainer); __sound.setVolume(0); The myVideo clip contained a video (with sound) that I imported to the timeline. I've seen reports that some Firefox don't respect WMODE requests when invoked from an OBJECT tag rather than an EMBED tag... there was an older issue in some Microsoft browsers where a WMODE toggle would send to the printer upside-down... a browser can support a feature but there's always the question of how similar it is in all respects to other implementations. However, while I currently have release and debug ANT targets, these really only change a couple of MTASC compile options (ie tracing). I have decided that a better solution is needed, to allow a release build to exclude NetDebug, to automatically change some config options, and also to integrate build numbers. So, preprocessing. After some searching, I found cpp ( http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/cpp/ ), filepp ( http://www.cabaret.demon.co.uk/filepp/ ), and jappo ( http://jappo.opensourcefinland.org/ ). However. cpp - linux application, the only Windows version I can see is via cygwin. And installing this on every development machine, for a single utility seems overkill. Plus, cpp seems to have the least features, and the filepp docs suggest it may leave strange comments in output files. filepp - Perl module, which should be fine (all development machines have ActivePerl installed). Except the download contains source files, and a bash script to create the application. So, again I'm kind of stuck being on Windows. jappo - Java .jar, with ANT integration. Sounds perfect. Except that after I work out how to reference the jar correctly in EclipseAnt and it runs, it gives errors about missing classes (ie org/apache/xpath/XPathAPI ). I downloaded the XPath addon for Eclipse, but this didn't help. I can't run any of the jappo samples either, as I don't have the Java SDK (currently downloading). [Flashcoders] Post data in frameset never makes it to new window, IE only.
Hello all, I'm working on a site that I didn't make but have to update. They used frames in the site, and I've come across a bug that existed in MX2004 that (i guess) was never fixed. Basically the POST data sent from Flash never makes it to its destination, leaving me with a big empty page. This only happens on IE if you're sending POST data from a frameset. Here are a lot of unhappy people who've had the same issue: http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flash/mx2004/main_7_2/1418.html So I'm pretty stuck, because I have to post a lot of data, and I can't unmake this site so it doesn't use frames. Would anyone have any magic fairy dust, or even better, a solution to this problem? I'd also be interested in knowing why this bug still exists, as I'm working on Flash 8. Re: [Flashcoders] AS 3.0 tutorials
Robin, I am right there with you about the migration from AS2 to AS3. Basically, as I gather it, packages are pretty much the same thing as the class path in as2 classes. com.exampleClass would become package com{ public class exampleClass{ public function exampleClass(){ ... code } } } some things to remember. AS3 constuctors cannot be private ( as of yet ). All the declarative classes (mx:Button or mx:Array ) in Flex have actionscript analogues. The event model has been completely revamped, too. Instead of using: myBtn.onPress = function(){ --click functions } you use myBtn:Button = new Button(); myBtn.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,doOnPress); function doOnPress(e:MouseEvent):void{ switch(e.target){ case myBtn: if(e.type==MouseEvent.DOUBLECLICK){ do one thing }else{ do another thing } break; case homeBtn: -- home button actions break; case menuBtn: -- menu button actions break; } } The whole point is to break apart the procedural calls associated with typical actionscript and tie the framework together in an object oriented setting that passes informative event objects to a centralized event processing area. This might seem like a lot of setup work for a small application, but the goal with AS3 is to allow for the complexity associated with rich internet applications in a flash client. Imagine putting a thousand onPress events all over your application then finding out you need to refactor (change) a huge chunk of your code to add another type of functionality. You would have to search through your code in a hundred places on a hundred frames to get the whole thing right. With the new way, your centralized events can be monitored and dispatched in one location You could do this with AS2, but it required some hacking. The whole MouseEvent.CLICK thing is just a constant in flex with the value of click. They just wanted to provide a constant based reference to the event name so that developers didn't screw up their app with a typo. The whole e:MouseEvent thing is the event object that gets passed as a parameter when the event reaches its target. You can tell the function to accept e:ChangeEvent or e:WhateverEvent and the event will only active the function if it is the right kind of event. This can help you sort through the different types of events that are available in AS3. You can use that event object to get information about what triggered the event - as well as define custom reactions to the event as it flows through the document tree ( think of the document as an XML file and your button is a node) I know this 5 second breakdown sucks - and I am just really starting to understand this stuff today - literally I learned this stuff today - so don't feel like you are alone in the dark. Re: [Flashcoders] AS 3.0 tutorials
You're pretty much dead on. Only thing is, it has nothing to do with Flex, and everything to do with ECMA compliance and performance. Yes, business wise, Flex needs ActionScript to change so the performance can be up to par to what Enterprise customers expect, but it's all about the code, baby! The biggest bottleneck in AS2 was EventDispatcher since that is pretty much the enitre plumbing a lot of larger projects utilized. Now that it's built into the player, it's wicked fast. - Original Message - From: Scott Fanetti [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Flashcoders mailing list flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com Sent: Monday, February 13, 2006 9:51 PM Subject: Re: [Flashcoders] AS 3.0 tutorials Robin, I am right there with you about the migration from AS2 to AS3. [Flashcoders] mp3 not playing in I.E. 6
I've seen some discussion of this in the archives, but nothing conclusive. My Flash 8 movie creates a sound object and uses loadSound (dynamicFilename, true) to play any of a number of mp3 files off the server. Works fine locally and in Netscape but breaks in I.E. when played via the web. Looking in the I.E. cache, I see that the mp3's are getting loaded when requested; they just don't play. If I type the URL of the mp3 file into I.E.'s address window, I can get the mp3 to open and play in Windows MediaPlayer. On a few occasions, I can then get Flash to play the same sound, but it almost always fails. I've tried absolute paths (http://mydomain/folder/filename.mp3) as well as relative paths (../filename.mp3 -OR- filename.mp3) in the loadSound argument -- makes no difference. And as I said, the files ARE being downloaded into cache, they just don't get played in the swf. They're all located in the same server folder as the .swf. I would recommend using a mediaDisplay for mp3s. Especially if there lengthy.. say 3 min or avg song length. The media display won't actually display anything for mp3's. it just gives you access to the sound. I would reccommend it just beacuse there are more properties and methods available for the media display. its easier to use. myMedia.setMedia(fileURI, MP3 | FLV); http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flash/8/main/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm?href=Part6_Component_Reference.html I am not aware of any problems with mediaDisplay's in IE. Marc, Yeah i guess try adding an onLoad. It should only take a sec. Yet I.E. is caching the mp3's as they're called from the web server -- it just won't play them. Anybody have a clue why this is breaking in I.E. 6? thanks, Marc ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com ___ Flashcoders@chattyfig.figleaf.com To change your subscription options or search the archive: http://chattyfig.figleaf.com/mailman/listinfo/flashcoders Brought to you by Fig Leaf Software Premier Authorized Adobe Consulting and Training http://www.figleaf.com http://training.figleaf.com
Re: [Flashcoders] mp3 not playing in I.E. 6
Aaron, I tried onLoad and it didn't seem to help, but I'm losing mental focus. Time to get some sleep, but depending whatever other feedback I get from the list, I will try a test file in the morning. Thanks, Marc At 11:34 PM 2/13/2006, you wrote: Marc, Yeah i guess try adding an onLoad. It should only take a sec. Test it out and see if it helps. if not, try creating a seperate fla for testing just this one issue. see what that does. if it still a bug in IE i would like to see that test fla. Aaron Marc Hoffman wrote: Hi Aaron, The sounds are 5 seconds or less in duration. Thanks for the suggestion, but I really want to know why this breaks in I.E. via web, as this works just fine in Netscape and Firefox. Also works fine in I.E. locally, just not over the web. Yet I.E. is caching the mp3's as they're called from the web server -- it just won't play them. I could add a Sound.onLoad listener to start the file playing, but this shouldn't be necessary and I'm not even sure it would fix the problem. Also, I tried resetting I.E. to its default settings, but no use. Would like to hear from anyone who is familiar with this problem. Marc At 10:50 PM 2/13/2006, you wrote: I would recommend using a mediaDisplay for mp3s. So give it a shot. if your using just short sound effects then yes.. use a sound object. Which if thats the case, I don't have any reccommendations at this point for your IE problem.. Aaron Smith Marc Hoffman wrote: I've seen some discussion of this in the archives, but nothing conclusive.
