[Flashcoders] Make page ads refresh on Flash click events

2007-04-13 Thread Marlon Harrison

I'm working on a flash app that will be embedded in a page that hold three
ad units. The flash app holds alot of content so its been requested that I
set it up t to refresh the three ad units when a user clicks to a different
section of the app. I've been googling this but haven't come up with a good
solution. Has anyone come across this before? Is there some javascript that
I can ask to have included in the page that works across major browsers that
can accomplish this?

When a user goes from section A to section B inside the flash app, the ad
units on the html page should all refresh.

Do they want the changes to happen while navigating within the flash

You'd just need to add to your navigation code to have it refresh the
ad area.

[Flashcoders] What's wrong with my dispatchEvent call? Listener not working

2007-03-12 Thread Marlon Harrison

I'm sure this isn't the most elegant code as it's my first time using
classes. My problem is that my my custom 'change' event is not being
dispatched from place but not the other. If anyone has a suggestion on a
more modular way of writing this I'd also appreciate it. Basically, my
sendChange function is being called, and the data is being passed through
dispatch event, but my listener does not trigger. It never get to the event
trigger in my fla, which for the moment is just a trace. Any ideas?

import mx.events.EventDispatcher;

class myComboBox {
//
private var dispatchEvent:Function;
private var dispatchQueue:Function;
public var addEventListener:Function;
public var removeEventListener:Function;

public function myComboBox(m:MovieClip, d:XML, c:Number) {
//(m)movieclip reference, (d)xml data to fill combobox, (c)default category
id to show
mx.events.EventDispatcher.initialize(this);

_cb = m;
_xml = d;
_cat = c;

//Loop through data and make combobox entries
   for (var i:Number = 0; i_xml.firstChild.childNodes.length; i++) {
   var xn:XMLNode = _xml.firstChild.childNodes[i];

   var id:Number = xn.attributes.id;
   //defaulting action dispatches change if an id exists that's equal
to the one passed
   if (_cat == id) {
   trace(matched on +i+ +_cat+ +id);
   sendChange(id);
   }
}

private function sendChange(id:Number) {
   trace(sendChange);
   dispatchEvent({target:this, type:change, parameters:id});
}

}

//Code from fla:
var combo:Object = {};
function init() {
   my_cmb = new myComboBox(cmb, _xml, 40);
   my_cmb.addEventListener(open, combo);
   my_cmb.addEventListener(close, combo);
   my_cmb.addEventListener(change, combo);

[Flashcoders] Need to reload page ads on Flash event clicks.

2006-12-07 Thread Marlon Harrison

I have a page with a fairly detailed Flash app embedded. There are also 3 ad
units on this page. I'd like to setup the swf to force the three ad units
to refresh when a user navigates through to a new section of the flash app.
I assumed I'd need to setup iframes around the adds, then call some js
function from Flash which performs a document.location action on the
iframes, and it seems to be working in Firefox, but not IE. Has anyone
needed to do something similar and maybe offer some insight?

Hi again

Sorry for omitting that info. The ads are served through 247realmedia's
OAS. The ads are typically swfs or jpegs, but they're not loaded into the
flash area. The ad units exist in the page; a banner, leaderboard, and
island. I have complete control over the coding of the page. I just need to
make the ads to refresh at certain events in the flash area. I've seen some
of the output from OAS, and typically its a document.write statement that
puts the ad in the page.

Does that help?

Thanks again

Re: [Flashcoders] Need to reload page ads on Flash event clicks.

2006-12-07 Thread Marlon Harrison

Thanks alot for that code, I hope I'm almost there. I have one more
problem. The data coming for the ads is actually javascript; a
document.write() command to be exact. When I use your code, the javascript
code appears in the ad areas. How would I change the code to have it render
that command?

Thanks a ton for the help so far.

Re: [Flashcoders] Need to reload page ads on Flash event clicks.

2006-12-07 Thread Marlon Harrison

Yes I'm pulling an html file for the iframe, but I'm not sure that would
work for this purpose. The call to the ad server gets js back; a
document.write() command. I tried putting at call into a js command, but
that doesn't seem to work. Here's an example of the code:

Your reload function modified to append the OAS as a var to each iframe:
function reloadAds(sitepage,rns,pcookie,adcontent1,adcontent2) {
  document.getElementById('topad1').src = ad_iframe_top.jhtml?ad=
http://oas.server.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_jx.ads/+sitepage+/1+rns+@Right,Position1,x96,BottomRight!Top?+
pcookie + + adcontent1 +  + adcontent2;
  document.getElementById('if1').src = ad_iframe_left.jhtml?ad=
http://oas.server.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_jx.ads/+sitepage+/1+rns+@Right,Top,Bottom,Right1,Left,Position1,x96,BottomRight!Left2?+
pcookie + + adcontent1 +  + adcontent2;
  document.getElementById('tower1').src = ad_iframe_tower.jhtml?ad=
http://oas.server.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_jx.ads/+sitepage+/1+rns+@Right,Top,Bottom,Position1,x96,BottomRight!Right?+
pcookie + + adcontent1 +  + adcontent2;

}

Then in each iframe.html file, this code takes the variable 'ad' and writes
it into a javascript call so that presumably, the ad appears - but the ad
isn't.

if (ad!= null) {
document.write('SCRIPT LANGUAGE=JavaScript type=text/javascript SRC='
+ ad + '\/SCRIPT');
}

I know it's extremely hacky. If anyone has a smarter approach, I'd really
appreciate it. I know that the ad variable is getting read by the page. I
think the problem is that for some reason the returned javascript is not
being rendered.

On 12/7/06, Seth Vanbooven [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Without seeing you code, here are my thoughts.

I assume you're pulling in an actually HTML page with the IFRAME
correct?

If that is the case you can just change up that JS function like so:
document.getElementById (id).src = document.getElementById(id).src;

That way it will just reload the current SRC.

[Flashcoders] Lil' OOP direction needed

2006-11-06 Thread Marlon Harrison

I need to develop an on-demand video player that includes a category browser
so that users can view a list of videos from a particular category (cooking,
for example) or the user can create their own playlist of videos. My
previous flash experience has been with procedural based actionscripting and
I'm having a difficult time determining where to begin in planning out an
OOP approach. I've picked up a few OOP/Actionscript books form Friends of
Ed, and the two Moock books, but I'm still a little unsure on where/how to
begin to make it as modular as possible. I could really use a 'how
why'-type description if anyone's so inclined…

Thanks!

Re: [Flashcoders] mac-switch: flash OS-X immediately quits

The app quits if i leave it for 3 seconds on the do you want to

Looking at the core dump below it says using Rosetta - is flash8 not
native to Intel chips?

Does anyone have ideas for what might be causing this? I've done the
obvious things like reinstalling/rebooting.

Totally frustrated that I cant get flash to run on a brand new mac...
its almost enough to drive me back to windows!

No problems with any other apps.

Thanks for any tips!

without using the FLVPLayer component or anything.

Any suggestions would be great!

welcome to the party,

  The basics of design patterns evolved from the timeline for me.

  Flash is an 'object oriented language' - that is each symbol is an
independent 'thing' in the library.

  Learning the time line and how to do a tween came first, oooh, a moving
thing on the screen.

  Next, we learned how to make a 'stop/start' button. A 'control' for the
movement.

  Thus two segments of the proverbial 'design pattern - the controller and
the content.

  Learning how to load another clip into the content makes that section of
the pattern a bit more complex, but does not affect the 'controller button'
in any way.

  Changing the button so it is a slider makes that section of the pattern a
bit more complex without changing the content or it's payload, except that
now with the control acting as a slider we have more fine grained
interaction with the content.

  Knowing only Flash, this all seems quit natural, but these types of
programming feats are quit difficult in most other programming systems.

  Separating what we do to the content from what the content is allows us to
- say load different source text into the content object without mangling
our control button.

  This 'design pattern' also allows us to create another button that adjusts
the scale or rotation of the content object while also leaving the original
'on/off' function of the first button undamaged.

  That's all there is to it. Of course it can be far more complex. Say we
want to change the content loaded into the content object based on a user
name, or day of the week... none of the new abilities should mess with the
existing controls we already made. And a sequence of decisions must be made
before loading any content into the content container - This then calls for
a new type of object/function - a load sequencer that acts without damaging
the existing working set up.

  I am not quit sure of the specific terms of the formal vocabulary, but the
idea of keeping different aspects of the project 'compartmentalized' is
what design patterns are all about. The separation of the general areas of
the project keep us organized and help avoid damaging sections that are
working correctly as we add new abilities to any given project.

  As projects become more complicated groups of similar types of activities
in the program will naturally be in one part of the interaction 'pattern'
and that is why everyone says take it easy and don't push too hard to get it
all into a predefined 'pattern' too soon because that will make a person
crazy... :)

Subject: [Flashcoders] Best way to learn OO Analysis and Design with
ActionScript

Hi everyone!

I'm having real difficulty understanding how to
properly architect and structure Flash applications
using ActionScript 2.0.

I've read Colin Moock's excellent Essential
ActionScript 2.0 and several other books and articles
on the topic and while I can safely say that I do
understand the syntax, I can't seem to write an entire
application using OO design mainly because I can't
figure out what should be in a class, which class
should do what, which class should extend MovieClip,
which class should use composition instead, which
class should start the application, etc.

I'm sure a lot of excellent Flash developpers in this
mailing list didn't have previous coding experience
before they started Flash (like myself) and managed to
become the ActionScript 2.0 OO pros aroud here.

Any help / tips ?

Adobe's site is very confusing with regard to this. I wanted to check

still set to be released 'soon' so I'm not entirely sure what to

Re: [Flashcoders] Accurate duration info from the Sound Class

2006-07-02 Thread Marlon Harrison

gotta use onID3 to get the duration of a streaming mp3. I've had isses with
that though myself. I know that the ID3 tags in the the mp3 need to be v2
inorder to be read from flash. I made an mp3 player and no mater what i
did, that duration property of the ID3 object returned would always be
undefined. If anyone has some tips on which encoders that inject the
duration property, please let me know because iTunes sure doesn't do it.

On 7/1/06, js [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

js wrote:

 A work around and what I've been doing: Divide mySound.getBytesLoaded by
 mySound.getBytesTotal to get a percentage of the song that is currently
 loaded; and then take mySound.duration and divide that by the percentage
 loaded. Provided that the duration property of mySound is accurately
 representing the amount of ms loaded, I should arrive at an accurate
 result.

 Unfortunately, both properties do not synchronize 100%, and the duration
 value progressively gains accuracy as the mp3 loads, opposed to getting
 a correct duration immediately.

 I would really like to find a more accurate way. Ideally I would like to
 get the complete duration of a loaded mp3 through flash immediately upon
 stream so the end-user doesn't see the progress bar jutting backwards
 and the total duration value slowly increasing as the song
 loads--without depending on external scripts or an xml playlist
file...etc.

 Any help / insight appreciated,

[Flashcoders] Class Newb Question

I've been asked to build increasingly more complex flash-based pieces
for my employer - and I would really like to begin to componentize my
code as much as possible to minimize me having to reinvent the wheel
with each project. I've never coded using class files…all of the code
that I've created has been inside of the 1st frame of the movie. I
haven't really had the time that I think I need to understand the
concepts behind using class files and the different OOP-designs that
are commonly used, so I've sort of built up a complex against them.

Does anyone have any URL's or books that they can suggest that may
help me out to get a good understanding? If it helps, I'm particularly
interested in the best approach toward building a media player that
can handle mp3 or flv's.

If I remember right, this is incorrect:

connection_nc.connect(); should be somethign different whe you're

Also, the ns.play() command for streaming cannot have the .flv at the

Re: [Flashcoders] Anyway to check if a file exists?

2006-03-17 Thread Marlon Harrison
What about the MovieClipLoader Class?

var loadListener:Object = new Object();

loadListener.onLoadError = function(target_mc:MovieClip,
errorCode:String, httpStatus:Number) {
trace( loadListener.onLoadError());
trace( ==);
trace( errorCode:  + errorCode);
trace( httpStatus:  + httpStatus);
}

var mcLoader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
mcLoader.addListener(loadListener);

var mc:MovieClip = this.createEmptyMovieClip(mc, this.getNextHighestDepth());
mcLoader.loadClip(http://www.fakedomain.com/images/bad_hair_day.jpg;, mc);

 there an error or event that loadMovie dispatches if it does not find a swf?

 exteriorMenuBoard_mc.loadMovie(path + lang +  + dtboarddesc + .jpg);

 Flash is tracing the famous file not found message in the output window
 but that doesn't help me here.

[Flashcoders] attatchMovie issue with a loaded mc

2006-03-07 Thread Marlon Harrison
I have a parent swf that loads in a series of children swfs and acts
as a browser for them. Within the children swfs - there are a number
of hotspot movieclips that trigger other events. I'd like to
centralize the appearance of those 'hotspot' movieclips to the parent
swf so that if i need to change how the icon's look i can change it
once in the parent rather than in each child swf.

I thought that the best way to do this would make the hotspot clips
into placeholders and use attachMovie to put the appropriate icon on
it. The problem is that is appears attachMovie doesn't work if the
path to the clip is in a one of the children swfs that was loaded. Is
this correct? If so, is there a workaround of some sort that I can
try?

Thanks!

Re: [Flashcoders] attachMovie to a loaded swf

2006-03-07 Thread Marlon Harrison
thanks

I don't think attachMovieClip will work in this instance from what
I've been reading. Perhaps I can clarify a bit more. I have a
container swf that loads in a series of children swfs. All of my
code is in the container swf, as are the icon movieclips. I want to
use attachMovie to put an icon on a path that's inside of one of the
children swfs.

If I add the movieclips to the child's fla and export them like I have
in the container swf, they load OK, but obviously that's what I want.

Re: [Flashcoders] netstreamed paused?

2006-01-13 Thread Marlon Harrison
As far as I know, NetStream.Play.Paused is not returned for
Progressive download flv's. Only for FCS Streaming video. I usually
use a Boolean value that is toggled when either playback begins or the
user clicks the pause/play buttons, or the video is buffering. Seems
to work for me.

 Hey guys I am building a flv player for one of our sites. The way I

 the video is paused or stopped a play button appears. All I am trying to
 do is move two movieclips around according to the situation. Below is my
 code of how I thought it would work except I know that doing
 if(info.code == NetStream.Play.Paused)returns nothing cause the status
 is never paused nor does it change to stop when ns.pause(); is done.
 What can I do to get this to work? Any ideas? Thanks!

 ns.onStatus = function(info) {
 trace(info.code);
 if(info.code == NetStream.Buffer.Full) {
 bufferClip._visible = false;

 if(info.code == NetStream.Buffer.Empty) {

 playButton._x = 500;
 playButton._y = 118;

 pauseButton._y = 118;

[Flashcoders] Download XML Object via FileReference?

2005-11-28 Thread Marlon Harrison
I made a flash i that builds a custom xml file, and I wondering if
it's possible to use Flash 8's new download functionality to take that
xml object that's built via the interface and have Flash generate the
file on it's own.

Re: [Flashcoders] End of flv playback event

2005-11-17 Thread Marlon Harrison
The primary issue is the these NetStream Status Reports do not fire
reliably. Buffer.Full is reported after playback has begun so if,
for instance, you have a placeholder graphic over your video, and you
tie it's fade to when Buffer.Full is sent, you need to give yourself
some black padding at the begining of the video. You'd also need some
at the end for Buffer.Empty. Also - if a buffer underrun occurs
during playback - you need extra conditionals for that.

On 11/16/05, John Giotta [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Here is the sequence for Flash Player 8:
 NetStream.Play.Reset
 NetStream.Play.Start
 NetStream.Buffer.Full
 NetStream.Play.Stop
 NetStream.Buffer.Flush
 NetStream.Buffer.Empty

 And sequence for Flash Player 7:
 NetStream.Play.Reset
 NetStream.Play.Start
 NetStream.Buffer.Full
 NetStream.Play.Stop
 NetStream.Buffer.Empty

 Excerpt from LiveDocs:
 NetStream.Buffer.Empty - Data is not being received quickly enough to
 fill the buffer. Data flow will be interrupted until the buffer
 refills, at which time a NetStream.Buffer.Full message will be sent
 and the stream will begin playing again.

 From what LiveDocs says it's not a reliable event.

[Flashcoders] End of flv playback event

2005-11-16 Thread Marlon Harrison
Is there any special trick to accurately getting an end of flv
playback event? I have to build a player that's also flash 7
compatible, which has an onEnterFrame in it that updates a progress
bar. The bar calculates the ns.time/duration to figure the position
in the video, but it NEVER gets to 100% with any flv I try - Ususally
somewhere in the 98.5 - 99.5% range. Is there a clean way to detect
when a video has complete playing? I have serveral videos that I need
to play through the player and if i need to recreate the flv's with
more keyframes or something, I can. I'd really like to know for future
reference. It's very frustrating.
