That's just my thought. Great points/observations. In this case, I am working with a box ad sent by a client... Sometimes they forget to add a clickTAG to their code. I have a different approach for AS 2 FLAs, but sometimes the clients send FLAs that need/utilize AS3... Long story short, occasionally, I have to crack open their FLA and add AS3 clickTAG support. I would say that 99% of the time the client will not be using a document class, so I can easily assign my class to the document and publish. The other one percent of the time, they might have a document class already assigned, so I would just create a MC in the lib and assign my class to that. But, you are right; I should write two classes (one for the different situations). TBTH, I thought I was being cool by trying to handle two situations in one class. :D Anyway, thanks again for the feedback! I will take your advice and change my code. Note: If only these Flash ad designers could remember to add their own clickTAG code, then I would not be making myself look silly in front of all you pro Flash gurus! :D Have a great day! RE: [Flashcoders] Test if using ActionScript 2.0
My limited understanding is all .swfs compile down to bytecode anyway, and it's the Flash player that contains the runtime and inteprets the AS 1.0 or 2.0 bytecode as the case may be, not the .swf, so I don't think that would work. Furthermore, I think I read somewhere (can't remember where) that all code made in AS2.0 is converted to AS1.0 at compile time (classes and methods are converted to prototype-style functions), so even the flash player has no clue wether the code was 1.0 or 2.0. side-note: my first post on the list, so... RE: [Flashcoders] Test if using ActionScript 2.0
If you were using AS3.0 you could use the flash.display.LoaderInfo.actionScriptversion property. Wait--no, that only distinguishes 1.0 and 2.0 from 3.0. You could use the swfVersion property, though. RE: [Flashcoders] Test CPU/performance/rendering
Hey Mick, Maybe it is better to give the user the option to select the processor speed rather than detecting it automatically. (that would be similar to picking your connection speed for a QuickTime movie). Some users may want to see all the effects even though they have a slow computer. If you want to determine the performance you could just measure the time it takes to perform some task. e.g. var t1:Number = getTimer(); for (var i = 0 ; i 10; i ++) { } var t2:Number = getTimer(); var timeToDoThis = (t2 -t1); trace (timeToDoThis) Don't know how accurate this is though :-) Robin -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Mick G Sent: Thursday, 25 May 2006 9:27 AM To: Flashcoders mailing list Subject: [Flashcoders] Test CPU/performance/rendering I'm building a fairly demanding site that has a fair bit of animation and rather than aiming for an average performance level of animation for my users, I'd like to turn off/on some features of the site depending on rendering capabilities of the users computer. Does anyone have any recommendations on the best way to achieve this? Off the top of my head I guess finding out the highest FPS the current viewer can achieve and flagging them as high or low performance depending on the results. Re: [Flashcoders] Test CPU/performance/rendering
Some good points Robin. I'd like to try automate the process as much as I can but will keep that in mind - it may be a better solution. Your timer would work for CPU speed, but I think I'd have to combine it with some rendering of some kind to test the capabilities of the graphics card also. eg. I have a fast computer at work with lots of ram that processes things like thing quicker than my PC at home, but has an old graphics card and is much slower at rendering. RE: [Flashcoders] Test CPU/performance/rendering
AFAIK the system.capabilities object is not capable of determining the highest FPS of the current viewer. Mostly it is for fairly vanilla info such as what FPlayer is running, OS, has Audio, has Video, etceteras. Which is not saying there is not a way to do so. If there is, peeps on this list will chime in and help. That being said, my two cents would be to establish a baseline system/setup that you are programming for and develop for those systems and above. When you establish a baseline system, you have a clear cut black and white measurement of success which of course is very important when dealing with clients.
