Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flow Control in Flex
Screens in flash may be good for this, but I can see doing this using a ViewStack in Flex... then either your backend (Java, CF) along with some Actionscript would determine which child was selected... Accordions are mainly for splitting out steps (a check out for example)... Flex doesn't have built in Flow control, like Screens in Flash... but Flex gives you the tools to do what you need.. Personally, I would do this in Flex using a View stack with multiple children and then code some rules to show the one I need.. RE: [flexcoders] RemoteObjects and UI within UI problem
I had hit some of the same problems. A possible solution may be because you are referencing mx.core.Application.application from within your result handler of the remote object. When using a loader, if you reference mx.core.Application.application from within nighthawk.mxml (Child Component), it actually points to the mx.core.Application.application of phoenix.mxml (Parent Application). It is because of static variable issues between the apps. Loader is extremely cool, but IMHO unusable for what you are trying to accomplish. Macromedia has to give some sort of new component, revamp the loader, or give us guidelines on using loaders properly. I had the same issues when I tried to accomplish this. Maybe someone else has some suggestions on how to get loaders working properlyJ. Dustin Mercer --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Dimitrios Gianninas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Dustin, Thanks for sharing that information. Yes I did run into the width/height troubles, but I saw that setting the exact width and height of the nighthawk.mxml caused it to appear properly when loaded within the phoenix.mxml. Now back to the problem, one thing I forgot to mention the first time around was that since I am using Cairngorm, I have the following declaration in the nighthawk.mxml: core:Services id=services / Which is a component that contains all my RemoteObject definitions. If I leave that line in the nighthawk.mxml, when loaded into Phoenix, nothing appears. Remove that line and it does appear. I then took the single RO and put it directly in the nighthawk.mxml and was doing Application.application.queryServices to use it, but like you explained below, using Application.application in a UI within a UI scenario references the top level UI and thus does not work. So anyways, I tried to work around this in several ways and it still doesn't work, the UI loads via the Loader, but no remote calls every get made. You are right however, the Loader component may need some enhancement. I am using it now in this fashion in order to accomplish single sign on. Also, I know that the child UI can reference the parent UI, but there does not seem to be a specific way for the parent to tell the child to do something (or invoke a method on it). RE: [flexcoders] How to use popups properly
It will work fine in that direction. The only problem I know of with that reference method is that binding will not work through it, but that will not be an issue for your usage. Re: [flexcoders] Cairngorm for a newbie :)
Hey Scott, Here's some feedback on your points: - formalised approach to command subscriptions, in that a controller is established which registers itself against commands for both Views and Models - but in a relatively simplified syntax (ie addCommand) A simple controller would have been a singleton with a big case statement to handle various events. As an itch in your OO design gland is no doubt warning you case statements are a clarion call to refactor, which the i2 guys did with the command pattern to split each case out into a separate class. When you add a command this limits the change to the controller to a single addCommand call in the constructor, and keeps the controller nice and small. The other advantage of separate command classes is that the when you make a remoting or webservice call the result and fault handlers can be methods of each command class - if you hadn't split commands out into separate classes you would need big case statements inside onResult and onFault handlers, which would have seen you in emergency with a severe allergic reaction. - Seperating ViewPods from logic via ViewHelpers. It appears that the framework allows a developer to add behaviours or logic to a view but in a way that its not coupled with that said view (ie i assume you could add a ViewHelper to other ViewPods? - yet all feed off the one instance/codebase). To me view helpers are about minimising the control logic's (Commands are part of the control logic) exposure to the view - up in the control layer you want to keep things at the sentance-in-a-use-case level i.e. promptUserLogin() and not sink into showPopupLoginPanel(). The view helper method names use a control layer vocabulary but their implementations are very view-aware. So the view helper provides a service to the control layer, not to the views themselves. I've never called a view helper from a view, I'm not clear what the Cairngorm position is on doing that, and as yet I haven't used view locators. There have been a few discussions about how thick view helpers should be, I think the most recent statement was that the helper should allow the control layer to set the model being used by the views and not much else. - Templated Command Objects : it seems to me that the whole Command concept has established a base template to work from, so that onResult, onFault and execute are automatically invoked per command? - then the developer can just fill in the blanks based on the event type? execute() is the only method required by the Command interface - this interface is the contract a Command has with the controller to handle events forwarded to the Command. If your command calls business delegates or any class that requires onResult() and onFault() callbacks (not all do) it implements the Responder interface. Note that there isn't really a neat solution yet for commands that need to call multiple delegates - look back through the list for some discussions on this, Steve has something up his sleeve for 1.0 I think. In the meantime you can daisy-chain commands together by broadcasting a new event in the first command's onResult, or risk the rash and do a case statement. - ViewLocator - kind of reminds me of DHTML's document.getElementById() in that it appears each ViewHelper registers itself within cairngorm and the ViewLocator simply provides a dynamic bridge between the actual view and the object requesting its location? or something like that? ViewLocator, ServiceLocator and EventBroadcaster are basically just lookup services that return singleton instances of view helpers, services and the object the controller listens to for events. Just a bit nicer than writing _global.myService or whatever - which you could do if you really wanted to. RE: [flexcoders] Re: Flex Choking on Array WSDL syntax?
OK, I wonder if this is a serialization problem due to objects not converting to arrays correctly (since you have only a single element inside an array type). What if you try this before sending? Whatever.myOperation.request.param.bazRequests.myRequestType = mx.utils.ArrayUtil.toArray(Whatever.myOperation.request.param.bazRequests.myRequestType); And then send the request. An alternative would be to define the request object outside the WebService tag like so: mx:Object id=myOpRequest param mx:Objectbaz=123 bazRequests mx:Object myRequestType mx:Array mx:Object foo=aaa bar=bbb / /mx:Array /myRequestType /mx:Object /bazRequests /mx:Object /param /mx:Object Then mx:WebService mx:operation name=myOperation mx:request{myOpRequest}/mx:request / / I may not have the object syntax exactly right but hopefully you get the idea. Re: [flexcoders] Deploying Flex Applications
I will take a shot at answering some of your questions. The Flex app (SWF) is cached by default on the client. This is assuming that the client has caching enabled. If your application has been cached on a client machine - the next time they visit your site a small time/date check is executed to verify that the client is running the latest and greatest version of your Flex app. No changes to your application = does not download it again. I believe that I understand your question about serving data from a different machine than is serving the Flex applications. Simply point your applications to the dataproviders - there is no limitation that says your datasource (RO / HTTPService / WebService) has to reside on your Flex server. Re: [flexcoders] Re: Flow Control in Flex
Harris, I haven't used Flash screens/forms, but I am sure there is a good way to do this in Flex, based on experience with other UI frameworks in which I have implemented wizard-type components with access to little more than things like ViewStack, etc. I would think about embedding a ViewStack (to show the wizard pages) in a Panel, with a ControlBar below it to show the Back/Next/Finish buttons and so on. A non-visual component would control the ViewStack, receive Back/Next events, enable/disable the buttons based on the current page's state, and make decisions about the flow through the wizard pages, possibly based on a simple data structure representing the flow, with different flow possibilities conditional on page states (e.g. 'complete', 'incomplete' + any other custom states based on answer values). There aren't any components that do exactly this sort of thing out of the box, but my guess would be that if the questionnaire has a complex flow at all, Flash wouldn't be any easier in which to do this (though I've never tried). . . . . ...j Harris Reynolds wrote: I feel like I am trying to put a square peg in a round hole using Flex to create a Wizard based app (Next/Back flow control).
Web Services with multiple ports
I am attempting to interact with a web service which has more than one port. Flex seems to default to the first port listed in the WSDL. When I use the port property to explicitly change the port of focus, Flex seems to ignore the explicit request. Is there something I'm doing wrong or missing somehow?
RE: [flexcoders] Web Services with multiple ports
You can define the port in the WebService tag: mx:WebService id=ws port=MyPort ... / Dirk. -Original Message- From: Doug Todd [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, March 18, 2005 4:51 PM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [flexcoders] Web Services with multiple ports I am attempting to interact with a web service which has more than one port. Data loss (datatyping?)
I've run into an oddity with how Flex handles incoming xml data (in particular, the results of an HTTPService call). Given the following xml: name label=DOE, JOHN data=123456 isBranch=true award label=75394D data=Fund/ award label=75394E data=Fund/ award label=75394F data=Fund/ /name Flex chops off the E in the label attribute of the second award tag (label=75394E). So, if I dump the label values into, say, a list, the list contents appear as: 75394D 75394 75394F However, Flex does the right thing when the last character is not an E (or e), or when the trailing E is preceded by other alpha characters (e.g. ABCDFGE). The E has already been lost by the time the data gets stored in the HTTPService's result object. When I run the typeof function against the label values, the first and third records (excluding the name tag) return a type of string, whereas the second record returns a type of number. Perhaps Flex looks at 75394E and thinks it's an exponential number that's missing the exponent, and so removes the E? Can anyone think of another explanation for this behavior? If not, is there a way to force Flex to type the data as strings?

Couldn't you just get to the parent, which is the ViewStack, of those children from within those children instead of passing the parent into each of them? RemoteObjects and UI within UI problem
Hi, Just been playing around with having one Flex UI within another and I am experiencing a little problem, and thus I was wondering if anyone has come across this problem and might have a solution. This is all under JRun 4 SP4... so we have the parent UI at http://localhost:8200/phoenix/phoenix.mxml and the child UI at http://localhost:8204/nighthawk/nighthawk.mxml Now using the loader component in phoenix.mxml I am able to load the nighthawk.mxml, no problem, it appears. However when I hit a button to perform an action which makes a remote call (via RemoteObject) nothing happens. The nighthawk.mxml works perfectly on its own however. Anyone have any insight?
