Re: [flexcoders] efficient way of doing custom formatting on datagrid column values
Hi Jason, try to override the setter for the data property and set all the values of your renderer manually. I found that binding is slow in an itemRenderer. Cheers,Ralf. On 7/14/06, Pan Troglodytes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a datagrid with a half-dozen columns, all but one numeric. I've used itemrenderers to make a label with a built in formatter to get them nice looking: mx:DataGridColumn headerText=Htl Bkgs paddingRight=4 dataField=Bookings mx:itemRenderer mx:Component mx:Label width=100% height=100% text={ fmt.format(data.Bookings)} mx:NumberFormatter id=fmt useThousandsSeparator=true/ /mx:Label /mx:Component /mx:itemRenderer /mx:DataGridColumnLooks cool, but makes for horribly laggy performance when scrolling around the grid with about 1000 records. What's a better way to do this? Is there one or are we stuck with this? Alternately, I've modified the data so that it's formatted when the data is loaded. But this screws up the sorting requiring me to write custom sorters. I've also tried breaking out my renderer into another class, but I still have to create a formatter for every instance since it can't see the one outside of the renderer. I think this is where the bulk of the slowness is. Of course, this may be a moot point. I have some columns that need the text to be colorered depending on value. When I put an item renderer label on those with color={data.value lt; 0 ? 0xFF : 0x008000}, this bogs down the scrolling, too. Not sure how I'll get around that. This just all seems like a lot of trouble and I'm hoping I'm missing something.-- Jason -- Ralf Bokelberg [EMAIL PROTECTED]Flex Flash Consultant based in Cologne/Germany __._,_.___ -- Flexcoders Mailing List FAQ: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/files/flexcodersFAQ.txt Search Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com YAHOO! [flexcoders] need solution/best practice regarding VO's
Hi All! I'm going to ask my question through an example. (I'm using Cairngorm, but I think the problem is general) Let's say I have a database with 2 tables: 1. user - with fields: user_id, user_name, user_country_id (foreign key from country table) 2. countries - with fields: country_id, country_name Let's say I need an application that lists all the users, in a datagrid with 2 columns: User Name, Country Name. How should I approach this? Let's say I have 2 VO's, to reflect the database structure: class UserVO { public var ID:int; public var name:String; public var countryID:int; } class CountryVO { public var ID:int; public var name:String; } And I have in my Model: users:ArrayCollection; // array collection of UserVOs countries:ArrayCollection; // array collection of CountryVOs How could I create a binding of users to a Datagrid, so it will display the country names? Or how else should I approach the problem? In case I have: class UserVO { public var ID:int; public var name:String; public var country:countryVO; } I think the bindig would be possibe, but a bunch of other questions/problems appear. Eg.: I'm using remoting to get the data from the server (AMFHP). On one hand: Class mappings won't work with VO's insite another VO. On second hand: I have to load the list of countries (I need it somewhere else), and I would not want to carry the CountryVO inside the UserVO, for many reasons. One of them is: this is a simple example, but what if CountryVO is a more complex data, and i need to send a userVO to the server (to update the database for example), I don't need a CountryVO there, just a UserVO that has the ID of a country. RE: [flexcoders] Re: Spring Enable Flex
Thanks for the replies. But when I say Spring Enable Flex, I mean Spring enable the flex services configuration. So you wire up all of the configuration (Im assuming the configuration files are just wiring up java objects) using Spring. This way, Spring can manage the FDS resources. Re: [flexcoders] Re: Spring Enable Flex
Actually, I very much doubt there is a clean mapping between spring configuration and FDS. There are things that are very FDS specific even for just remoting, which would most cleanly map to spring. And then there are other concepts that are totally different than what would have been considered in the design of spring configuration. Apples and oranges, I'm afraid.RegardsHankOn 7/14/06, Allen Riddle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks for the replies. You can emulate a lot of what Spring provides without adding anything to Flex. Re: [flexcoders] efficient way of doing custom formatting on datagrid column values
Upon further painstaking experimentation, it appears that ANY itemRenderer introduces a certain lagginess to scrolling. Not unacceptable and probably wouldn't be noticed much with a smaller browser window than what I use in 1600x1200. But it's there. It doesn't matter if the renderer is just a subclass with no new code. So I guess I'll just have to live with it to do the coloring. On the other hand, using labelFunction has helped cut down on the lag introduced by the numeric formatting. On 7/14/06, Ralf Bokelberg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Jason, try to override the setter for the data property and set all the values of your renderer manually. I found that binding is slow in an itemRenderer. Cheers,Ralf. On 7/14/06, Pan Troglodytes [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I have a datagrid with a half-dozen columns, all but one numeric. RE: [flexcoders] associative arrays and dataproviders
Use a labelFunction. Specify it on the DataGrid tag or on a columntag. The specified function will receive a reference to the current Item object (and the column index, so one function can work for all columns). Dot down to get the data out of the nested object, and return a string. I was messing around with the dashboard sample on the adobe site http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/samples/dashboard/ And everything was going fine. [flexcoders] flex2 compc external-library-path inconsistency - bug or feature ?
Hi, this refers to released Flex2 SDK, build 143452 on OSX As it seems compc behaves inconsistent depending on where external-library-path is set: When adding an external library path via config file '-load-config+=myConfig.xml' like external-library-path append=true path-elementaslib/flexunit.swc/path-element /external-library-path the external-library-path set in flex-config.xml gets replaced (i.e. playerglobal.swc is not included anymore) although 'append=true' is specified. Consequently Errors are thrown like Error: 'flash.net:XMLSocket' is undefined. Error: 'decodeURI' is undefined. Error: 'Class' is undefined. Error: 'uint' is undefined. Error: 'flash.utils:Timer' is undefined. Error: 'flash.events:WeakFunctionClosure' is undefined. Error: 'encodeURI' is undefined. Error: 'Array' is undefined. . However when the external-library-path is set via commandline '-external-library-path+=aslib/flexunit.swc' or the path to playerglobal.swc is specified in the config file as well, compc does not report any errors. Is this inconsistent behaviour intended or a bug ? RE: [flexcoders] Re: Spring Enable Flex
Because it can make it much easier when you have n number of different configurations, all using their own xml schema. For instance, XFire, Mule, and Flex DS all have their own config formats, however, XFire and Mule, are Spring enabled, so you can configure them with the dependencies using Spring, and configuration at that point becomes much much easier. -Original Message- From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Tom Chiverton Sent: Friday, July 14, 2006 9:40 AM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [flexcoders] Re: Spring Enable Flex On Friday 14 July 2006 14:41, Allen Riddle wrote: Spring enable the flex services configuration. RE: [flexcoders] Re: Loading WSDL using Flex 2.0 Data Services
It seems youre using the proxy service through FDS but relying on the DefaultHTTP destination (since a destination was not specified). Have you setup the allowed URL patterns in the corresponding /WEB-INF/flex/proxy-config.xml file for the DefaultHTTP destination? Have you looked at the channels that are configured for this destination? These ids refer to channel-definitions in the top level services configuration file at /WEB-INF/flex/services-config.xml. Each channel-definition defines an endpoint url. This information is compiled into the SWF when you specify the services=your_path_to_the_services_config_file command line argument for the MXML compiler. If the endpoint url contains a {context.root} token you need to also specify the context-root=/yourcontextroot command line argument (or replace this token with the known context root of the deployed web application hosting the FDS message broker and thus the channel endpoint(s)). Finally, if youre using the proxy you do not need to have a crossdomain.xml file on the server hosting your WSDL, however depending on where youre hosting your SWF you may need a crossdomain.xml file to contact the proxy service (i.e. based on the channel endpoint URL). Have you considered all of this? Sorry, a little explination is probably needed. The browse methods of FileReference and FileReferenceList are not static. [flexcoders] Firing DataGridColumn's ItemRenderer methods.
Hello All, I have a datagrid that has 2 DataGridColumns. Each DataGridColumn has its own itemrenderer. I would like to fire a function that is inside of each of the DataGridColumn's itemRenderer. Is there any equivalent mechanism(s) on the Macintosh? Sorry I'm late to the discussion... here's a couple of things you might be seeking: (Q) Is there a Mac ActiveX? (A) There was, but few used it, and IE/Mac was abandoned by Microsoft awhile back. (Q) Can I add a browser extension to my native-code Macintosh applications? (A) Yes, if you can emulate the Netscape Plugin hosting mechanism. (Q) Is there a protocol for Netscape Plugins to communicate with their host, on Macintosh? (A) Yes, the Adobe Flash Player uses a generic externalInterface wrapper layer for using various host communication protocols, and for the Netscape Plugin protocol you'd be implementing this API: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/plugins/npruntime.html (Q) How can I render Flash within native-code applications across platforms? (A) Via the above path, but it's a lot of work to write one native-code application, much less multiple ones which integrate platform-neutral renderers. jd -- John Dowdell . Adobe Developer Support . On one hand: Class mappings won't work with VO's insite another VO. who says? Works for me. In your case maybe try mx:DataGridColumn dataField=userVO.countryVO.name headerText=Country/ ??? On second hand: I have to load the list of countries (I need it somewhere else), and I would not want to carry the CountryVO inside the UserVO, for many reasons. One of them is: this is a simple example, but what if CountryVO is a more complex data, and i need to send a userVO to the server (to update the database for example), I don't need a CountryVO there, just a UserVO that has the ID of a country. Another way maybe to just add countryName:string to your userVO. Depends on what you need userVO to fully model. Re: [flexcoders] considering a flex purchase
1. Nope. If you are in Atlanta August 3rd, New York August 16th, or in Vegas October 23rd, I'll be showing how you can lay the funk using Flash other design elements in Flex applications. You can skin a LOT of the components via CSS; some need code, but it's easier to do than it is in Flash 8. 2. Familiar workflow to developers and declaritive XML layout seperates your GUI from your code; less coupling means your code doesn't break when the design changes. Those are the big 2. The others are built-in layout engine, lack of initialization issues, better components, and better coding IDE. The new player, Flash Player 9 is a huge deal. The new ActionScript virtual machine, ActionScript 3, DisplayList, binary sockets, organized language, etc. etc. etc. 3. Flex 2 SDK w/ Charting is what I recommend. I'll let others explain FDS. 4. Flash takes Flex to the bank with font handling; total pain in the ass. A lot of things were accidentally made private in the base classes, so it's somewhat challenging to ensure you don't modify the original code. Not all filters are implemented CSS. The bloody NavBar class utilizes the DisplayList for order; this makes it impossible to make z-depth sorted tabs for example. RE: [flexcoders] considering a flex purchase
Heres my opinion: That is absolutely incorrect. The only limit on appearance is the imagintion. If a lot of apps look similar, it may be because they were created by developer-types who are more interested in creating usable functionality than in re-inventing the tree or data grid. We may need more outside the box creative designer types involved. Flex is still Flash. I am not a Flash developer, so it is difficult for me to compare. But as I understand, Flex fits better into enterprise level development processes and methodologies. No timeline, whatever that is. It depends. You do not have to buy anything. You will probably want Flex Builder, since it is a very productive way to code and compile Flex apps. If your server-side data requirements are intense, you might want FDS, Flex Data Services. For normal data access, the RPC functionality is sufficient, and that is included with the framework (free). Uh, you need Flex developers. Flex is new. Flex is dependent on the Flash Player(that is not really a complaint). Flex componets are immature and limited, compared to ActiveX or even the new widget thingies. Flex Builder is new, there are some bugs, and the add-in tools for it do not exist yet.
