[flexcoders] Signed RSL penetration

2009-04-21 Thread guy
Does anyone have stats on how the various signed RSLs are going in
terms of their prevalence in the flash player cache?

I'd love to use them, but it's a bit of a risk...compiled in, my app
is under 1Mb. Splitting the framework RSL from it makes my app 300+kB
smaller, but will require the user to download 500+kB of framework RSL.

Maybe it's worth doing if 50%+ of users will get the benefit, but if
only 10% will benefit it seems unlikely to be a way to increase the
general happiness.

Some good stats on this would be very useful...

Indeed.
You could achieve the same thing with a ViewStack or using States, but is
a 'splash screen' going to be a good user experience ?

[flexcoders] Flex Windows Not Loading Bug

2009-04-21 Thread edlueze
Please help me fix a windowing integration bug in our Adobe Flex application.
I'd love some free advice, but we really need the problem solved so we've also
posted the question on rent-a-coder.

All of our Flex windows (Application/Canvas/Panel/TitleWindow/etc) work fine
individually when running in a browser (Firefox and Internet Explorer). Now we
are trying to integrate all of the Windows together (less than 100 in all) and
we are observing some pretty bizarre behavior - sometimes a window will load
and other times the same window will not load. But the problem is not
intermittent - it happens very often and we can usually force a window failure
on demand.

When the window does not load we observe the CPU usage in Task Manager hitting
the maximum, and we believe that the Flex Application has fallen into an
endless race condition in which it is constantly resizing the components within
the window (we randomly pause the application and usually find the stack doing
something like this). When this happens the window's creationComplete event
doesn't trigger and we cannot insert a breakpoint.

We make heavy use of constraintRows and constraintColumns and we are suspicious
of them. We use a lot of Accordion's as well as the custom HAccordion from
Flexlib, but we've had trouble positively identifying them as the culprit. Each
window can get pretty buried in a deep hierarchy of windows, but it is not
always the deepest windows that will fail to load.

We've also implemented a suspicious custom component early on to handle
system-wide ToolTips. It is old code and does some funky things, but when we
commented it out the behavior didn't dramatically improve.

Our testing has been limited to the Debugger Flash Player, but we've tried both
debug and release versions of the application.

I've combed Flexcoders and I've not come across anything like it. I'd love to
hear your ideas?!

[flexcoders] CakePHP+CakeAMFPHP vs WebORB dialema

2009-04-21 Thread raja_s_patil
Hello,

With reference to our topic few days ago and responses
there on we are converging on PHP as server side technology.
Within that we shortlisted two options

1 CakePHP + CakeAMFPHP - Adapter classes to make AMFPHP work
   seamlessly with CakePHP. This way, you can leverage your
   productivity by using CakePHP features on the server side to
   build your application server and use CakeAMFPHP to send
   data back and forth Flash/CakePHP. You can also have a
   HTML version of your Flash app without headeaches.

2 WebORB - WebORB for PHP is server-side technology enabling
   connectivity between Flex and Flash Remoting clients and
   PHP applications. WebORB for PHP can be installed into any
   PHP5 application to expose PHP classes as remote services.
   The product provides a complete implementation of the
   Adobe's AMF0 and AMF3 messaging protocols and thus supports
   any Flash Remoting or Flex client.

What we need a fast performing, easy to understand and code and
easily maintainable data abstraction layer. We are prefering
to ability to change backend database to one of Firebird,
PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle and MS-SQL. Similarly ability to
embed business logic in that layer.

So whatever study we had done so far we are tilting towards
CakePHP but WebORB is also equally competing. We are not able
to make up or Mind so can somebody guide us on this ?

Thanks and Best regards

Raja

[flexcoders] Multi Language Support

2009-04-21 Thread srinuguda
Dear Friends,

How to achieve Multi Language support in flex. When I say multi language , it
is not about labels. It about data entry. Entering the data eg: in arabic and
seeing the information in arabic. And also arabic means, the navigation or flow
is opposite to english ie right to left.

Flex 3 supports these features? If so kindly let us know the steps involved in
it.

[flexcoders] Dereferencing an array in ActionScript

2009-04-21 Thread Sebastien ARBOGAST
I would like to call RemoteObject operations in a generic way.So I have a
function that takes an Operation arguments and the arguments to send in an
array:

public function
run(action:Operation,arguments:Array,resultHandler:Function,faultHandler:Function
= null):void{
 action.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT, resultHandler);

if(faultHandler != null){
action.addEventListener(FaultEvent.FAULT, faultHandler);
}

action.send(arguments);
}

Now the problem is that Operation.send() takes only a rest array parameter.
So if I call my run function for arguments=null or arguments=[], send() sees
it as one parameter anyway and my call doesn't go through. Is there a way to
dereference an array in ActionScript like it's possible in Python for
example? Is it possible to call Operation.send() without knowing arguments
at compile-time?

Appears that your dataprovider is productList.items

So try to add some item to it, if it is a simple array, probably(someone
correct me if I'm wrong plz) you won't see the change in your layout, so

I do know that WebORB is fast, reliable and community support is very good. I
find it very easy to code for (Although I could be biased as I have used it for
a long time).

I would be reluctant to use CakeAMFPHP as I don't know the level of support I
could get from the community. There are a lot of WebORB users here on
FlexCoders so any questions you will have will likely get a response. I have
never seen a query related to CakeAMFPHP on FlexCoders.

Also, with WebORB, if you ever need enterprise support, you have the option of
paying for it.

Also, event though the SWFLoader is ready, that does not mean the

I would like to call RemoteObject operations in a generic way.

So I have a function that takes an Operation arguments and the arguments to
send in an array:

public function
run(action:Operation,arguments:Array,resultHandler:Function,faultHandler:Fun
ction = null):void{

action.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT, resultHandler);

if(faultHandler != null){

action.addEventListener(FaultEvent.FAULT, faultHandler);

}

action.send(arguments);

}

 Please help me fix a windowing integration bug in our Adobe Flex application.
 I'd love some free advice, but we really need the problem solved so we've
 also posted the question on rent-a-coder.

 All of our Flex windows (Application/Canvas/Panel/TitleWindow/etc) work fine
 individually when running in a browser (Firefox and Internet Explorer). Now
 we are trying to integrate all of the Windows together (less than 100 in all)
 and we are observing some pretty bizarre behavior - sometimes a window will
 load and other times the same window will not load. But the problem is not
 intermittent - it happens very often and we can usually force a window
 failure on demand.

 When the window does not load we observe the CPU usage in Task Manager
 hitting the maximum, and we believe that the Flex Application has fallen into
 an endless race condition in which it is constantly resizing the components
 within the window (we randomly pause the application and usually find the
 stack doing something like this). When this happens the window's
 creationComplete event doesn't trigger and we cannot insert a breakpoint.

 We make heavy use of constraintRows and constraintColumns and we are
 suspicious of them. We use a lot of Accordion's as well as the custom
 HAccordion from Flexlib, but we've had trouble positively identifying them as
 the culprit. Each window can get pretty buried in a deep hierarchy of
 windows, but it is not always the deepest windows that will fail to load.

 We've also implemented a suspicious custom component early on to handle
 system-wide ToolTips. It is old code and does some funky things, but when we
 commented it out the behavior didn't dramatically improve.

 Our testing has been limited to the Debugger Flash Player, but we've tried
 both debug and release versions of the application.

 I've combed Flexcoders and I've not come across anything like it. I'd love to
 hear your ideas?!

[flexcoders] Polling vs. Timeout error vs. ???

I think I asked this question before but my searches for my messages come up
empty (search in this forum is awful).

I have a Flex application that I need to do polling. Because of the
implementation/install of our app I cannot use any push technology.

So my solution, which I am not sure will work, is to create a timer on my the
main stage that every 3 minutes tell the app to it needs to make another
httpservice call.

My question is can this be done or if I create a timer that loops forever will
I get a Timeout error script has been running blah blah or what ever the time
error says?

Or I could create a timer and have it run and when it sends out a request
create a new timer and kill/delete/remove the last timer?

2009-04-21 Thread valdhor
Actually, WebORB includes a lot of examples including CRUD.

Once you download and install WebORB on your server, just navigate to

http://yourserver/LocationYouInstalledWebORB/

This should bring up the console. Click on the Examples tab and then click on
the tree dropdowns - there are a lot of examples.

Also, I have posted a couple of examples myself. Check out these threads...

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/message/126803

There are others - I just can't find them. These should be more than enough to
get you going.

Best Regards

I have a Flex application that I need to do polling. Because of the
implementation/install of our app I cannot use any push technology.

So my solution, which I am not sure will work, is to create a timer on
my the main stage that every 3 minutes tell the app to it needs to make
another httpservice call.

My question is can this be done or if I create a timer that loops
forever will I get a Timeout error script has been running blah blah or
what ever the time error says?

Or I could create a timer and have it run and when it sends out a
request create a new timer and kill/delete/remove the last timer?

Any other way to accomplish this?

if you only have to reload the data every 3 minutes, you should be
fine using a timer.

You won't get the 'script running too long' error as a result of using

process or goes into an infinite loop.

Anyone have an idea on how to use LCDS or BlazeDS for a Chat Application? Its
easy to get your basic chat up and running with a simple producer/consumer

1)Set up a list of available rooms (Subtopics) so that all users get a pick
list of available rooms. I have a basic MultiTopicProducer/ MultiTopicConsumer
set up but if a user comes online late they don't get the list of rooms… only
new rooms that get created. Or do we have to wait for Flash Collaboration
Services (AFCS)

2)Online User list – need a way to have a server side list that is kept up
today with who is online… something like a Server Side Shared object like Flash
Media server has.

3) Make durable messages – so users who come online later can get caught up on
messages they missed.. I tried a bunch of settings in messaging-config.xml
like durabletrue/durable but they don't work or as the docs say they
should.

Any insight would be helpful

Yes, as Greg says.

Further, this line is not establishing a binding:

story.text = newz.currentItem.story

It is a simple assignment.

Also, currentItem only exists when the renderer is executing, and not when
you are attempting to make the assignment.

Note that repeater does not have the concept of a selectedItem, unless you
code that yourself.

[flexcoders] Violated by Sandbox

So I just got violated by the Sandbox Violation #2148 Error.

I'm trying to deploy my first flex app. I have an xml file used as a chart pod
list. Each pod element has it's own web service url. It's the same url with a
different chartID passed to get different data. Anyway, I've been debugging
the application with the pods.xml file being loaded via HTTPService in
src/pods.xml. The chart HTTPService calls were just to xml files as well for
testing. I have the web service on the production server. I changed the
pods.xml path from src/pods.xml to http://myProductionServer/site/pods.xml and
I changed the individual chart urls in pods.xml to point to my .NET web
service. I get the Sandbox Violation error on the server and even when I
change everything back and debug.

I have a crossdomain file with the * wildcard for the domain on the server.
It's in my Inetpub/wwwroot folder. I have not changed any compiler settings.
What's the best way to manage local to server deployments, and why do I still
get the error locally since I changed everything back?

Thanks,
Jason

RE: [flexcoders] Violated by Sandbox

2009-04-21 Thread Jake Churchill
I ran into a similar issue recently (not sure if it's exactly the same but I
was getting data from a different server). I had to do this:

// set security to allow the calling domain (needed to get live data from
dev server)

Security.allowDomain(Model.instance.domain);

Security.loadPolicyFile(Model.instance.domain + /crossdomain.xml);

Model.instance.domain ended up being http://www.myproductionserver.

So I just got violated by the Sandbox Violation #2148 Error.

I'm trying to deploy my first flex app. I have an xml file used as a chart
pod list. Each pod element has it's own web service url. It's the same url
with a different chartID passed to get different data. Anyway, I've been
debugging the application with the pods.xml file being loaded via
HTTPService in src/pods.xml. The chart HTTPService calls were just to xml
files as well for testing. I have the web service on the production server.
I changed the pods.xml path from src/pods.xml to
http://myProductionServer/site/pods.xml and I changed the individual chart
urls in pods.xml to point to my .NET web service. I get the Sandbox
Violation error on the server and even when I change everything back and
debug.

I have a crossdomain file with the * wildcard for the domain on the server.
It's in my Inetpub/wwwroot folder. I have not changed any compiler settings.
What's the best way to manage local to server deployments, and why do I
still get the error locally since I changed everything back?

Thanks,
Jason

[flexcoders] Flash player 10 Debug not recognized in FB3

2009-04-21 Thread Merrill, Jason
Subject says it all, but I have the Flash player 10 debug version
installed and when I go to debug my Flex app in Flexbuilder, it says,

Flexbuilder cannot locate the required version of Flash player. You
might need to install the debugger version of Flash player 9 or
re-install Flexbuilder.

Sometimes I can click yes to go ahead with previewing my flex app in
the browser, but if I have any debugging needs going on, like a simple
trace statement, it times out and says I need the debug version of the
player. I have 10.0.22.87 installed, which is a debug version (according
to Adobe's site anyway)

Any help?  Thanks.

Re: [flexcoders] Signed RSL penetration

2009-04-21 Thread Guy Morton
Yes, I know how it works...my point is that it's hard to sell to my
current clients if for most it's going to translate into a bigger
download for first time users.

This is why stats as to how many users are likely to already have the
different versions of the RSLs would be handy.

I realise this is probably strategically sensitive for Adobe as they
want to encourage use of RSLs as it improves the Flex download size
story longer term.

Someone made the suggestion somewhere that when users upgrade or
install the player, Adobe ought to download and install all the
current RSLs as well. That seems a very sensible idea to me.

Even if they were a separate download available at the time (or
available as a Flash player professional version) it would be better
than forcing developers distributing apps to do it. We have app size
as an imperative that we have to work with.

With RSL you either load quicker (win) or have to download app+RSL

[flexcoders] FileStream.truncate() doesn’t work after calling FileStream.readUTFBytes()

2009-04-21 Thread skuteboarding
Hi,

I'm trying to read an xml file into memory, add a node, then write over the
original file.

The following code works just fine (it clears the file, then writes the new
bytes over the top):

var stream:FileStream = new FileStream();
stream.open(file, FileMode.UPDATE);
stream.position = 0;
stream.truncate();
stream.writeUTFBytes(?xml version=\1.0\ encoding=\UTF-8\?);
stream.writeUTFBytes(File.lineEnding);
stream.writeUTFBytes(xml.toXMLString());
stream.close();

However, if I attempt to perform a read after the file has opened, the position
/ truncate calls don't work:

var stream:FileStream = new FileStream();
stream.open(file, FileMode.UPDATE);

var xml:XML = XML(stream.readUTFBytes(stream.bytesAvailable));

// Modify xml here

stream.position = 0;
stream.truncate();
stream.writeUTFBytes(?xml version=\1.0\ encoding=\UTF-8\?);
stream.writeUTFBytes(File.lineEnding);
stream.writeUTFBytes(xml.toXMLString());
stream.close();

Does anyone have any ideas why this doesn't work?

If you examine the stream, in the first code, after the call to truncate(), the
bytesAvailable property will read 0. But in the second code, the bytesAvailable
won't change (it will show the current file size).

Any ideas?

Mark

Yes, I did it when I deployed it because I had to deploy it to a staging
server before it went on the production server. I don't think you'd need it
if you deploy it directly to production but if you're allowing the same
domain the SWF was loaded from, it's not going to mess anything up.

[flexcoders] Re: CakePHP+CakeAMFPHP vs WebORB dialema

Thanks Steve,

 Actually, WebORB includes a lot of examples including CRUD.

 Once you download and install WebORB on your server, just navigate to

 http://yourserver/LocationYouInstalledWebORB/

 This should bring up the console. Click on the Examples tab and
 then click on the tree dropdowns - there are a lot of examples.

Unfortunately We could not makeout where to extract the zip file
we have downloaded, i.e. installing webORB. The hint in this
post has given us clue that it should be Document Root of apache
or a alias should be defined in apache to extracted directory
in Apache, Am I right ? we will try this. The webORB getting
started page do not explain it clearly to beginners like me.

 Also, I have posted a couple of examples myself. Check out these threads...

 http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/message/126803
 http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/message/119962

 There are others - I just can't find them. These should be more than enough
 to get you going.

Thanks a lot we will come back to list after trying all mentioned
above. BTW ppl here talk about wrapping it in some wrapper
what is that ? and what purpose it serves.

Thanks and best regards.

Thanks Brad Bueche,

 If you have SLA's in terms of maintenance and production response with your
 customers you may want to partner with the party that can also offer that
 contractural level of service to you. (My experience with the webOrb team is
 that they are very responsive). With that said you may also want to look at
 Zend before you make a final decision.

Well we going to have a pilot application, so we will evaluate Zend
also in due course of time depending upon experience we have. If
it serves purpose better then we can adopt it in actual development.

Thanks and best regards.

I have previously done a full clean and rebuild, and it made no
difference.

The link report from a month ago shows the accessibility classes were
being included at that time.

I just did a clean and build and generated a link report...it has
entries like this:

script name=/Applications/Adobe Flex Builder 3/sdks/3.1.0/
frameworks/libs/framework.swc(mx/accessibility/AccImpl)
mod=1214927782165 size=3103 optimizedsize=1768

  def id=mx.accessibility:AccImpl /

  dep id=mx.accessibility:UIComponentAccImpl /
  dep id=mx.core:UIComponent /
  dep id=flash.events:Event /
  dep id=AS3 /
  dep id=flash.accessibility:Accessibility /
/script

But still, no accessibility appears in the actual binary.

If I turn it off in the compiler, the link report doesn't have these
entries, so it's clearly *trying* to include the accessibility
features. They just aren't working.

This is very frustrating.

[flexcoders] Perennial problem with Flex -- single element vs multi-element

2009-04-21 Thread elevight
For those of you who have been using Flex since 1.5, do you remember how Flex
always had a problem returning single-element arrays as a non-array object, and
how we had to apply mx.utils.ArrayUtils to force it to become a one-element
array?

It seems like Flex 3.0 still has the same problem. If the XML I am getting from
the server looks like this:

root

node /
root

that is, a root tag with more than one child node, event.result.root.node will
be of type ArrayCollection. But if the XML is like this:

root
node /
/root

where there is only one child tag, event.result.root.node becomes of type
mx.utils.ObjectProxy. This is causing my application to bomb because I'm
automatically storing the results in an ArrayCollection.

Has anyone had this problem before? Any suggestions on how to handle this would

Thanks.

I guess you could set breakpoints to see if code in the accimpl

I have previously done a full clean and rebuild, and it made no
difference.

The link report from a month ago shows the accessibility classes
were being included at that time.

I just did a clean and build and generated a link report...it has
entries like this:

script name=/Applications/Adobe Flex Builder 3/sdks/3.1.0/
frameworks/libs/framework.swc(mx/accessibility/AccImpl)
mod=1214927782165 size=3103 optimizedsize=1768

  def id=mx.accessibility:AccImpl /

  pre id=flash.accessibility:AccessibilityImplementation /

  dep id=mx.core:mx_internal /

  dep id=flash.accessibility:AccessibilityProperties /

  dep ! id=mx.accessibility:UIComponentAccImpl /

  dep id=mx.core:UIComponent /

  dep id=flash.events:Event /

  dep id=AS3 /

  dep id=flash.accessibility:Accessibility /

/script

But still, no accessibility appears in the actual binary.

If I turn it off in the compiler, the link report doesn't have these
entries, so it's clearly *trying* to include the accessibility
features. They just aren't working.

This is very frustrating.

This is really annoying.

This happened to me back in January and now it has happened again.

I've followed all the advice in the previous posts to no avail.

Can someone from Adobe please throw me a clue here? Why would -
accessible in the project properties suddenly stop working?

As you may have guessed, it has stopped working for me again. The
cause is a complete mystery.

Try compiling with accessible turned off and get the ! swf size - when
you turn accessible compile back on the swf size should be a bit
larger. This will tell you if the compile is backing in the needed

application. Can you give more information?

 Anyone got any ideas as to why this might have happened or how to

A TextInput control dispatches an enter event when you press the Enter key.

Here is one way to do it. Let's say this is your mxml:

mx:TextInput id=txt width=200 keyDown=txtKeyDownHandler(event)/

Then your keydown handler would be:

// Waiting for return key
private function txtKeyDownHandler(event:KeyboardEvent):void
{
if (event.keyCode == 13)
{
// do something
}
}

Re: [flexcoders] Perennial problem with Flex -- single element vs multi-element

2009-04-21 Thread Josh McDonald
Or build an XSD. Without it, how on earth is Flex's built-in decoder going
to know that sometimes there's many node/ elements, but right now there's
not?

  Set resultFormat=”e4x”, and do not depend on the built in decoder. Loop
 over the XML list and build you own ArrayCollection.

 Or use ArrayUtil.toArray(),

 Or inspect the result and handle it conditionally.

 multi-element

  For those of you who have been using Flex since 1.5, do you remember how
 Flex always had a problem returning single-element arrays as a non-array
 object, and how we had to apply mx.utils.ArrayUtils to force it to become a
 one-element array?

 It seems like Flex 3.0 still has the same problem. If the XML I am getting
 from the server looks like this:

 root
 node /
 node /
 root

 that is, a root tag with more than one child node, event.result.root.node
 will be of type ArrayCollection.

Any suggestions on how to handle this
 would be greatly appreciated.

 Thanks.

Re: [flexcoders] Expiration date

2009-04-21 Thread Steve Mathews
A very quick and dirty way would be to just save the first date it is
launched (to a text file or better yet to a db) then check it on startup.
Once time runs out just tell the user and exit. Of course the user could
uninstall/reinstall to get around this, so it isn't a fool-proof solution.

 Hi all, I have small AIR project, now it is beta version. I will send it to

 Example as set this soft to stop working 1 month from first use, or set the
 number of using soft is 100 times.

 Any one can guide me some steps to do it? Thank in advanced
