This Adobe press release suggests that developers can build Flash apps (Flash CS5) for the iPhone: http://eon.businesswire.com/portal/site/eon/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_viewnewsId=20091005006358newsLang=en Does this mean Flash Builder 4/Flex 4 will support the iPhone at some point? - Alex C
[flexcoders] Re: Hot news! Adobe Opens iPhone to Flash Developers
You're welcome. My boss owns an iPhone and wants everything we build to run on it. So I've been hunting high and low for any way to run Flash on the iPhone without a jailbreak. Some wording from the press release caught my eye: The Apple iPhone SDK license terms do not allow runtime interpreted code, so Adobe is not able to deliver Flash Player in Safari on the iPhone without support from Apple. Applications for the iPhone built with Adobe Flash Professional CS5 do not include any runtime interpreted code. So the apps built with CS5 will not include any runtime interpreted code. Not sure what that means for Flex developers. Is that good/bad/indifferent? - Alex C --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Vivian Richard kanps...@... wrote: Wow!!! Thanks for sharing the news. I'm very curious as to how this applies to Flex. The article didn't mention that, but like you said, maybe someone from Adobe will add something to the discussion and stop keeping us in suspense! Any explanation about why Flex/Flash is not upholding it's end of the bargain? Is it just a simple issue of Flash's URLRequest timing out waiting on the serverr? My server is responding in about 500ms on the low end at around 200ms on the upper end. But, it still just drops some of the requests. When I did my upload, I passed a UUID so I had a common thread I could count on. It randomly drops events, but I get all of the progress events, and Event.COMPLETE. I only get some of UPLOAD_COMPLETE_DATA. I'm aware that UPLOAD_COMPLETE_DATA is not sent if the server doesn't return any data, but I'm sending data for all of these uploads (because it all traverses through he same code). So if I get even one callback I should get all of them in theory. My first theory was that my server process was taking too long and flash timed out the response so I offloaded what was taking so long, but that didn't improve anything. [flexcoders] Re: curly braces and functions in mxml
Both in this case do the same thing. Curly braces tell Flex that it should treat the contents as ActionScript (thus you can Ctrl-click it). It's basically a function call. Take a look here for an explanation: http://www.onflex.org/ted/2005/06/property-binding-in-flex.php In the case of your code, the click property of the Button component converts the string it receives to a function call automatically; it's redundant to use the curly braces but it shouldn't hurt anything. - Alex C --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Rick Schmitty flexc...@... wrote: Is there a difference between mx:Button click=onClick()/ and mx:Button click={onClick()}/ The only thing I've notice is in the latter I can CTRL+Click on onClick and it takes me to the onClick function, while the first one does nothing

[flexcoders] Re: save word file to database.
It can be a pain reading/writing binary data regardless if what server side code you use. I'd advise against it unless you need to hide the Word docs from someone coming along and accessing them directly. If you use a good authentication/authorization mechanism to protect the web app, you shouldn't have to store them on the database. You could use some simple code in your server-side app to give the files a new name while writing them to a folder. And you'd store the filename/location to the database as a string (varchar). Then other apps could also access the files if necessary. - Alex C --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Jeffry Houser j...@... wrote: Although possible to save binary docs in a database, I recommend against it. [flexcoders] Re: Best database for Flex
Flex generates a Flash movie (SWF) file that runs in the browser (client side). It's therefore a presentation layer for your application. It calls your Java, PHP, ASP.NET, CFML, etc., server side code to do such things as fetching database records, authenticating/authorizing a user, etc. Your server side code generates data in a format that Flex can understand (for example, valid XML). Flex then consumes that and is able to display it in a datagrid or other control. In this regard, then, Flex is database-agnostic -- it doesn't care where the data it uses comes from. But as others pointed out, you'd want to avoid using MS Access for building web apps; the other databases provide their pluses/minuses. If you need something free, then MySQL/PostGre are good choices. If you're a Microsoft shop, then maybe SQL Server. And of course Oracle is a solid choice for enterprise apps as well. Found out a solution: The problem was in the BufferedImage object in the Java code. Java's BufferedImage couldn't handle some of the JPG's and was choking. Once I passed the InputStream directly to a method that uses the Java Advanced Imaging API, the problem went away. Using WireShark, I noticed that Flex kept calling the server and getting back a 404 error (therefore it seemed to be hanging, even though it was working behind the scenes). There are a couple of different ways. To start, you can use a servlet that generates XML and use an HTTPService in Flex. A more sophisticated option is to use the free BlazeDS data service tool to pass objects between Java and Flex. Thanks, Fotis. It's using the underlying Flash API's flash.text.TextField object, with the allowed tags found here: http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/langref/flash/text/TextField.html#htmlText -Alex --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Fotis Chatzinikos [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: check the docs... Thanks. Alex, with my component, I grab an HTML file which is formatted using the limited set of tags that the TextArea component supports. Then I set the htmlText property of the TextArea instance. I can also call a servlet URL that transforms the help text in XML format and apply the formatting using an xsl stylesheet. The Flex part only knows it is calling a URL and getting back formatted text. /Paul -- Fotis Chatzinikos, Ph.D. Founder, Phinnovation [EMAIL PROTECTED],
[flexcoders] Re: Using XSL in Flex?
The TextArea allows the SPAN tag and the CLASS attribute. Is the class defined in the Flex app in the mx:Style tag or in the HTML? -Alex --- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, oneworld95 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thanks, Fotis.
