[flexcoders] Hot news! Adobe Opens iPhone to Flash Developers

2009-10-05 Thread oneworld95
This Adobe press release suggests that developers can build Flash apps (Flash
CS5) for the iPhone:
http://eon.businesswire.com/portal/site/eon/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_viewnewsId=20091005006358newsLang=en

Does this mean Flash Builder 4/Flex 4 will support the iPhone at some point?

[flexcoders] Re: Hot news! Adobe Opens iPhone to Flash Developers

2009-10-05 Thread oneworld95
You're welcome. My boss owns an iPhone and wants everything we build to run on
it. So I've been hunting high and low for any way to run Flash on the iPhone
without a jailbreak.

Some wording from the press release caught my eye: The Apple iPhone SDK
license terms do not allow runtime interpreted code, so Adobe is not able to
deliver Flash Player in Safari on the iPhone without support from Apple.
Applications for the iPhone built with Adobe Flash Professional CS5 do not
include any runtime interpreted code.

So the apps built with CS5 will not include any runtime interpreted code. Not
sure what that means for Flex developers. Is that good/bad/indifferent?

I'm very curious as to how this applies to Flex. The article didn't mention
that, but like you said, maybe someone from Adobe will add something to the
discussion and stop keeping us in suspense!

It can be a revolution for Flex developers.

 Here's my take. Flex is just a framework built on AS3. This middleware
 compiler should be able to compile Flex AS3 code into native iPhone code no
 problem.

 The new framework should also help reduce the weight of your app and make it
 run faster.

 This is really great news. Our skills just got a lot more valuable today.

More on the same topic:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/10/05/not_quite_flash_adobe_announces_iphone_native_app_porting.html

It's not designed as a replacement for Flash in Safari; rather, it lets you
submit your Flash CS5 apps to be listed on the Apple Store. The Safari plugin
might never happen; Apple doesn't allow plugins on the iPhone.

I'd echo what others have said; I didn't know AS 3 before doing Flex 3. Flex
has helped me learn AS. If you spend the time to look at examples on the web

still have iterative and conditional statements; still have functions (now

  Thanks Jeff. That just might work for what I'm doing. What a
  pain in the ass, but your suggestion is pragmatic. I'm sure others have
  encountered this problem. Any explanation about why Flex/Flash is not
  upholding it's end of the bargain? Is it just a simple issue of Flash's
  URLRequest timing out waiting on the serverr? My server is responding
  in about 500ms on the low end at around 200ms on the upper end. But, it
  still just drops some of the requests.

  I spent a lot of time on this. In my case it was only
  when using FireFox and when HTTPs was being used. Basically the long
  requests time out - it is upload file size dependent. What I ended up
  doing is listening for the COMPLETE event and then round-tripping to the
  server to retreive the data I wanted about the upload. When I did my
  upload, I passed a UUID so I had a common thread I could count on.

  Even though your issue may be slightly different, using
  a UUID in your URLRequest object may help you workaround the issue.

  I'm having trouble getting a
  DataEvent.UPLOAD_COMPLETE_DATA event when uploading many FileReferences.
  It randomly drops events, but I get all of the progress events, and
  Event.COMPLETE.  I only get some of UPLOAD_COMPLETE_DATA.  I'm aware
  that UPLOAD_COMPLETE_DATA is not sent if the server doesn't return any
  data, but I'm sending data for all of these uploads (because it all
  traverses through he same code). So if I get even one callback I should
  get all of them in theory. My first theory was that my server process
  was taking too long and flash timed out the response so I offloaded what
  was taking so long, but that didn't improve anything.

  Any idea what's going on here? Any other ideas
  on what I can try? I'm using a Ruby on Rails server backend.

[flexcoders] Re: curly braces and functions in mxml

2009-03-06 Thread oneworld95
Both in this case do the same thing. Curly braces tell Flex that it should
treat the contents as ActionScript (thus you can Ctrl-click it). It's basically
a function call. Take a look here for an explanation:
http://www.onflex.org/ted/2005/06/property-binding-in-flex.php

In the case of your code, the click property of the Button component converts
the string it receives to a function call automatically; it's redundant to use
the curly braces but it shouldn't hurt anything.

[flexcoders] Re: save word file to database.

2009-03-06 Thread oneworld95
It can be a pain reading/writing binary data regardless if what server side
code you use. I'd advise against it unless you need to hide the Word docs from
someone coming along and accessing them directly. If you use a good
authentication/authorization mechanism to protect the web app, you shouldn't
have to store them on the database.

You could use some simple code in your server-side app to give the files a new
name while writing them to a folder. And you'd store the filename/location to
the database as a string (varchar). Then other apps could also access the files
if necessary.

Flex is a presentation tool; it requires some server-side tech (JSP,

[flexcoders] Re: Best database for Flex

2009-02-20 Thread oneworld95
Flex generates a Flash movie (SWF) file that runs in the browser
(client side). It's therefore a presentation layer for your
application. It calls your Java, PHP, ASP.NET, CFML, etc., server
side code to do such things as fetching database records,
authenticating/authorizing a user, etc. Your server side code
generates data in a format that Flex can understand (for example,
valid XML). Flex then consumes that and is able to display it in a
datagrid or other control.

In this regard, then, Flex is database-agnostic -- it doesn't care
where the data it uses comes from. But as others pointed out, you'd
want to avoid using MS Access for building web apps; the other
databases provide their pluses/minuses. If you need something free,
then MySQL/PostGre are good choices. If you're a Microsoft shop, then
maybe SQL Server. And of course Oracle is a solid choice for
enterprise apps as well.

Hope this helps.

Found out a solution: The problem was in the BufferedImage object in
the Java code. Java's BufferedImage couldn't handle some of the JPG's

that uses the Java Advanced Imaging API, the problem went away.

Using WireShark, I noticed that Flex kept calling the server and

I'm getting a broken pipe error in my Java server log when trying to
upload a file using Flex. I've got a progress bar attached to the

The file resides on a network drive rather than a local drive. Could
this be causing the issue? Is it a security problem? But it's able to
handle other files from that same location without any issues.

The other weird thing: If I wait a moment and refresh the Flex page,
it shows that the file uploaded fine.

Is there an event I can listen for to determine what's happening?

[flexcoders] Re: html text | TextArea | ui tag

2009-01-27 Thread oneworld95
The htmlText in the TextArea control supports only a limited number of
HTML tags; take a look at this blog post for more info:
http://devharbor.blogspot.com/2008/12/display-html-file-in-flex-textarea.html

I don't think the ul tag is supported; nor can it be nested. To
create lists, you simply use the li tag.

Look on this page:
http://livedocs.adobe.com/flex/3/langref/flash/text/TextField.html#htmlText

The textformat tag and its attributes should get you what you need.
Look at the indent, leftmargin, etc. to place your nested li items
where you need them. And get rid of the ul tags.

[flexcoders] Re: File download from server

2009-01-26 Thread oneworld95
For whatever reason, setting content-disposition stuff didn't work for
me and was running out of time. What I ended up doing was this,

 - User clicks a button to generate the file on the Java side and save
it to the server.
 - In Flex, when server returns the usual XML response saying all is
OK, I dynamically add a button to the app to handle the download using
a FileReference object.
 - On successful download (Event.COMPLETE), I delete the button from
the app.

  create a new URLRequest and then navigateToURL. The PHP script creates
  the file and when done sends the following headers:

  Header(Content-type: application/octet-stream);
  Header(Content-disposition: attachment; filename=zipTest.zip);

  The script then streams the file to the browser. The headers sent back
  to the browser cause the browser to pop up the save file window just
  as if the user clicked a file link on an HTML page.

[flexcoders] Re: opposite of outterDocument?

2009-01-22 Thread oneworld95
The way I did this (and it's probably not the most efficient) was this:
 - User clicked a button inside the mx:component tag.
 - The click call passed a reference to the VBox container to the
outer document function.
 - In the outer document function, I'd use the reference like this:

var vb:VBox = vbox; // vbox is the reference to object in component
var text:TextInput = vb.getChildAt(2) as TextInput;

I wish there was a cleaner way, like setting an ID on the mx:component
tag and then referencing its children. But I think the component is
treated as a different class altogether.

You could append a unique value to a querystring on the server URL for
each update, something to fool the browser into clearing the cache.
The date/time worked for me when dealing with images that were being
cached.

Of course, updating the data every second seems inefficient and will
put a lot of load on your server, but if that's part of your
requirements, who am I to question it.

 I was hoping to be able to load this data from the XML files that I
 have uploaded. (All the files are in the same domain so I don't think
 crossdomain.xml is required here - I did add a cross domain file, but
 still get the error.)

 I'm not sure if this is a Path/Directory error or if I need to create
 a new application service on the server to retrieve that data. (This
 would seem to defeat the purpose of having XML configuration files in
 the first place).

 The more general question here is how to retrieve data from XML data
 that resides on the host?

 Any suggestions?

[flexcoders] Create popup that speaks to JavaScript

2008-12-08 Thread oneworld95
I've been tasked with creating this in the next 24 hours,
 - When an HTML page loads, a DIV tag pops up a Flex app ONLY if a
cookie on the user's machine has expired. Otherwise, it wouldn't show it.
 - In the Flex app, it has a little button, Do not show again that
communicates with a JavaScript library to set the cookie.
 - The Flex app needs to have a semi-transparent background so the
HTML page underneath can be seen.

Does anyone have an example of something like this? This is urgent!
Thanks much.

You'd probably want to use a labelFunction on each column where you
want to do something to what the user sees. I think one of the links I
sent you has info on creating labelFunctions. Here's an example,

// As described here: http://thanksmister.com/?p=8
// Pulls data from XML nodes that are optional.
// Assumes your XML has an element called image that
// has an attribute called id.
public function getImageID(item:Object,
column:AdvancedDataGridColumn):String {
  if (item.image == undefined) {
return null;
  }
  else {
return [EMAIL PROTECTED];
  }
}

In your ADG, you'd call this function like this:

mx:AdvancedDataGridColumn labelFunction=getImageID
  headerText=Image ID /

Look up flex itemRenderer on Google. I think that will enable you to

[flexcoders] Re: Flex and Java Communication

2008-12-03 Thread oneworld95
There are a couple of different ways. To start, you can use a servlet
that generates XML and use an HTTPService in Flex. A more
sophisticated option is to use the free BlazeDS data service tool to
pass objects between Java and Flex.

For the first option, you can create an HTTPService like this,

import mx.rpc.http.HTTPService;
import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
import mx.rpc.events.FaultEvent;

private function getServletXML():void {
  var service:HTTPService = new HTTPService();
  service.cancel(); // good idea to cancel service first.
  service.url = http://myserver.com/MyXMLServlet;;
  service.resultFormat = e4x; // Makes XML nodes accessible in
ActionScript
  service.contentType = application/xml;
  service.addEventListener(ResultEvent.RESULT, serviceResultHandler);
  service.addEventListener(FaultEvent.FAULT, serviceFaultHandler);
  service.send();
}

private function serviceResultHandler(event:ResultEvent):void {
  var myXML:XML = XML(event.result);
  // here you'd do something with the myXML object, such as bind it to
a datagrid
}

private function serviceFaultHandler(event:FaultEvent):void {
  Alert.show(event.fault.message,Could not read XML servlet.);
}

You can look at this page for an example of connecting a servlet to
Flex:
http://blog.kevinhoyt.org/2007/12/07/flex-to-java-servlet-file-upload/

Another example: http://learn.adobe.com/wiki/display/Flex/2b.+Code+Files

To produce efficient XML in Java, look up the examples on this page,

 MS proxies).

 Sometimes putting a query string on the end of your request can help, eg

 http://www.yoursite.com/myapp.swf?foo=bar

 You can then randomise this which can help if you're behind a bad web
 proxy.

 In addition, if you have control over the server environment, you can
 set the no-cache headers when serving your files. This should stop
 your browser holding onto them (and ought to also stop web proxies
 doing the same).

 Well, maybe it's more efficient to do this another way. Let me
 explain
 what I'm trying to accomplish and see what you think is the
 best way
 to it: I'd like to grab a text file (XML or HTML) and load it
 into a
 Flex control and have it formatted correctly without having to
 fetch
 individual elements from the XML and putting them into label
 controls.
 Thanks.

  Or you could just use the ExternalInterface API to call the
 XSL(T)
  engine that most mainstream browsers include these days.
 That said,
  there is (in my opinion) still the question of whether that
 approach
  leads to a robust solution, particularly w.r.t. cross-browser
  differences . . .

  If you want to pursue that approach, this appears to be a good
resource:

   Can XSL be used to tell Flex how to display XML data?
I've got
an XML
   help file that I'd like to display in a popup window in Flex
   without
   having to fetch each element; I'd like to just dump the
 contents
into
   a Flex control and have it automatically apply styles to it.
   Thanks.

Alex, with my component, I grab an HTML file which is formatted
 using
the limited set of tags that the TextArea component supports.
Then I
set the htmlText property of the TextArea instance. I can also
 call a
servlet URL that transforms the help text in XML format and
 apply the
formatting using an xsl stylesheet. The Flex part only knows it is
calling a URL and getting back formatted text.

I can imagine there are lots of options, but here's one

 Hi,

 anyone knows of a simple Flex audio player (just start/stop buttons
and a
 slider)?
 It shouldn't be a big deal to implement one, just to avoid
reinventing the
 wheel.
