Re: [Flightgear-users] Re: Spitfire Starting (was FlightGear v0.9.8onWindows XP)

2005-02-01 Thread David Culp
Then fire the starter - it needs holding on for a couple of seconds (I'd
guess you aren't holding the starter switch on for quite long enough, but
it's only a guess). Use the panel switches as well as the keyboard.

The keyboard's space bar is defined with a mod-up, so the starter stops when
you release the key. This works fine for some airplanes, but not for others.

Maybe the Spitfire can redefine the space bar binding in its *-set file?

Re: [Flightgear-users] FGFS vs. XPLANE vs. MS Flight Simulator

2005-02-01 Thread David Culp
-are there any glider available in FGFS?

There are two here: http://www.flightgear.org/Downloads/aircraft/index.shtml

The ASW-20 uses the UIUC flight dynamics model.

The Schweizer 2-33 uses the JSBSim flight dynamics model, and also uses the AI
system to put a thermal over the control tower at KSFO.

You could also paste the thermal bits of XML from sgs233-set.xml into the
asw20-set.xml file to give it a thermal too. Or, you could make
thermal_demo the default AI scenario by editing the preferences.xml file.

Re: [Flightgear-users] Fuel consumption of the A320

2004-11-10 Thread David Culp
I think this is a good first approach. But it covers not the static
thrusts condition, when the aircraft is at the airport. There must
be a dependency with the airspeed.

Engine performance does vary with speed, but this is done in the idle thrust
table in the engine configuration file.

I search for hours on the net to find
some hints regarding this item. Nothing.

Never mind. To have a correct fuel consumption for cruise is
more important than the consumption at the airport. We just have to
hurry up with take off :)

Do you mean that your fuel flow at idle is not what you're expecting?

Re: [Flightgear-users] Fuel consumption of the A320

2004-11-10 Thread David Culp
is this something that you have/will implement in JSBSim for the
 turbine model?

I'm not sure yet. Now that my internet connection is back up I'm trying to
find out what exactly is the problem that Hans-Georg is having. I need
specifics.

An overview of how FGTurbine calculates thrust and fuel flow:

Idle thrust is looked up in the idle thrust table, which uses speed and
altitude as inputs.

Full thrust (military thrust) is looked up in the milthrust table, also using
speed and altitude as inputs. Idle thrust is subtracted from this here. It
is added back in later.

N1 and N2 targets are based on the throttle position and the idle N1 and idle
N2 values from the configuration file. A function called Seek() acts as a
lag filter to spin the engine to the target N1 and N2 realisticaly.

A value called N2norm is found. This is just the N2 range (from idle N2 to
maximum N2) normalized.

A thrust coefficient is found, ...

Oops, that's not my code. It looks like we're getting thrust squared?

I'll fix it.

Re: [Flightgear-users] Fuel consumption of the A320

2004-11-04 Thread David Culp
May be it is a good idea to meet the published TSFC values
 at cruise speed (N1 about 80 or 85 %), not at N1=100 %

That's a good idea. We can assume that most TSFC values will be given for
cruise conditions, about 80 to 85 percent N1. The turbine model uses N2,
only because it has to also make sense for turbojets. This formula looks
better:

correctedTSFC = TSFC * (1.5 - (N2norm * 0.58823));

This will make the TSFC value just right at 85% N2. It also flattens the
curve a bit which will result in less variation over the range of N2.

Re: [Flightgear-users] Fuel consumption of the A320

2004-11-02 Thread David Culp
Is this behaviour a bug or a feature ?

Where is the fuel consumption calculated ?

It's in FGTurbine.cpp:

double correctedTSFC = TSFC + TSFC - (N2norm * TSFC);
FuelFlow_pph = Seek(FuelFlow_pph, thrust * correctedTSFC, 1000.0,
10);

The published TSFC value is usually for cruise conditions, so I've made it
vary with N2 to better model fuel flows at low N2, where the compressor is
inefficient. I matched the results with known fuel flow values for the
CFM-56, and the results are pretty good.

Do you have a better formula to vary TSFC? If so let's get it into the model.

You CAN help. Can you start by describing the flight condition that
leads to the yaw oscillation? I'll need to reproduce this same flight
condition so I can see what's happening first.

I'm speaking from near-ignorance because I have zero experience with
transport jets, but don't they often have a lot of yaw oscillation? I
thought that was why the yaw-damper was always on, even when the pilot
was hand-flying. Once on the radio, I did hear a big jet (don't
remember the type) declare an emergency and return to the airport
because it lost its yaw damper.

All of the ones I'm familiar with need a yaw damper, but they'll fly
adequately without one. If the yaw damper quits enroute you can continue
as long as you avoid certain flight regimes as specified in the flight
manual. Of course there may be exceptions. It usually more of a problem at
high altitude, which makes me wonder if that big jet's main problem was that
it didn't have enough fuel to get to it's destination at the restricted
altitude, so they called the flight off and declared the emergency for a very
overweight landing.

But that's just a wild guess :)

I see that too. The condition is nothing special actually. Just fly

caused a right rudder reaction for a while.

I can't reproduce that. Can you send me the 737.xml file you're using so I

I just upgraded to 0.9.5 and soon discovered that the sailboat and aircraft
carrier are missing (KSFO). Will they return, or is there a magic
 incantation to perform?

Also.. I was sitting just off the runway with some horn blowing in my ear,
when all of a sudden another plane landed. Whoosh, right past me. Is more
 of that possible?

The aircraft carrier was part of the scenery, so perhaps it has been removed
from there?

The sailboat and aircraft (was it a 737?) are both AI objects, which are
controlled by an AI scenario file. You can find this file in the
data/Data/AI/ directory. You probably had the aircraft_demo.xml file loaded
in preferences.xml.

You can have as many AI objects as you like, so you can create your own AI
scenario file and load it up with objects.

it worked since it left my hangar for the big wide

work at all.I know that work has been done in this

work.As it stands now the readme I wrote is not
worth the paper/BITS it is written on.

This is really a question for David Culp (who is away for a few days at
the moment) and I didn't try the autopilot of the 737. But this is the
 latest version available.

I started working on a new autopilot for the 737 as soon as the new code came
out, but I was also making changes to the code. I dropped it until the code
stabilized. I'll try to get a new autopilot made for the 737 before the next
release.

Re: [Flightgear-users] Frame Rates and general performance questions

2004-02-25 Thread David Culp
It's like you have to compensate *constantly* to keep it on track. The
one time I've been in the copilots seat in a real plane, the pilot
didn't have to move the yoke or pedals around to get and keep the plane
lined up with the runway anywhere NEAR as much as you have to in jsb.

Try doing an approach in yasim and you'll see what I mean. This is also
the same basic difference I noticed between JSB and FS2004.

You have to keep constant right rudder in at high power settings, due to
torque effects. This is very tough to do with a joystick twist-rudder, and
results in sloppy heading control.

Might this get into FG soon?

I could, except I don't know if I can find the model's original authors to get
it GPL'd. It's a low-poly design for FS95 by Dale Jackson.

 An in-flight refuelling sub-system/facility would be... :)

That's what started me down this road, but I don't know... maybe :)

Does it use the 'KEMT' type AI or is it a multiplayer technique, and is
 there much jitter?

It's derived from Dave Luff's FGAIPlane, and is instantiated by the FGAIMgr
along with the C-172 at KEMT. It starts 6 miles east of KEMT, heading north
at 10,000 feet, and just flies a 15-degree-bank left turn all day at 350 KTAS
(just over 300 KIAS).

You can see jitter as you get within about 500 feet or so. I figure that even
with a 120 hz refresh it would jump 5 feet forward between updates. In this
shot I have a frame rate of 20, so the jumps were pretty far. I had to crank
the visibility up so I could find the stupid tanker :) Maybe Erik's F-16 can
get it on radar.
