You should give consideration to moving to AIM*. It contains migration
utilities that preserve the customer's data and configuration information.

Hi,
Is anyone of you already experienced with an upgrade of a Legacy
historian?
Customer needs to make larger his historian, from 500 to 1000
points
without loosing his preexisting configuration.
Do the saveh50 and loadh50 utilities allow this?

Step by step:
-saveh50
-recommit with new historian size(same name)
-loadh50
is this possible or is it enough?I've looked on Helpful hints, CARS,
but
i've not found documents about this.
Thank you in advance.

How do you change deltas now compare with the ones then?

And now a customer perspective...

Pros of AIM*Historian:

1. You can modify it while it is running.
2. You can run it on the NT platform as well as AW51, and you
can set
up remote collectors on both NT and Unix platforms.
3. Much better archiving and storage tools.
4. Reasonably clean Windows NT interface (with some annoying
little
quirks) as well as the usual bulk command line interface.

Cons of AIM* Historian:

1. It can be an enormous resource hog. Our 6000-points-or-so
AIM*Historian runs on an AW51E, 256 MB RAM, a 9.1 GB hard drive, and
we
notice considerable sluggishness over the AW51E we have that doesn't
run
AIM*Historian. The Legacy Historian is no slouch hogging up
resources also
of course, but I can recall a few years back at another site running
a
similar number of points on an AW51C with a 1.2 GB drive without
many
problems.
2. Could be a cost issue for some companies. And the AIM*Suite
utilities (AIM*Datalink, et. al.) don't buy you much over the ODBC
interface
you can already get with the Legacy Historian. AIM*Datalink is a
woefully
inadequate product. The only thing we use it for here is the DDE
interface
so that we can link AIM*Historian real-time data to our Excel Visual
Basic
sheets. Otherwise, no one uses it because it is cumbersome and
requires
intimate knowledge of how the I/A system is put together, which our
process
engineers don't have.
3. You must have at least one Windows NT workstation or server
on the
network to configure it. It cannot be configured from Solaris
except with
the command line interface, which is great for bulk edits but
cumbersome for
small changes. This could be a problem for sites not running
Windows NT.
4. Unlike Legacy Historian, no tools are provided for
extracting
real-time data into tabular or text format with AIM*Historian by
itself.
There is an Excel add-in, which is only somewhat helpful, but you
must buy
the whole AIM*Suite to get it. If you want any sort of
customization at
all, you must create your own tools using C or Visual Basic. If you
happen
to know or want to learn C or VB, that's great, but if you don't
know it or
don't have time to learn, you'll have to spend more money to hire
someone
who does. You could also buy the Foxboro Canada report package,
which also
works with the Legacy Historian.

We have AIM*Historian here, and I would never want to go back to the
Legacy
Historian, despite the myriad of problems we have had with issues
mostly
related to the remote collector we set up. We bought the whole
AIM*Suite as
a small part of a huge project, we have NT here, and I happen to
know a
little VB, so the cons are not an issue here, but they may be for
some
sites. The fact that you can modify it while it is running is a big
enough
pro for me to recommend it, especially to sites where historian
uptime is a
big deal, like a refinery.

Alex,

We have configured most flows to update at 10 seconds, and most
everything
else to update at 30 seconds, with change deltas of 0.1% of
engineering
units. I wish there was a way to configure deltas as percent of
actual
observed range, like the Biles AIM product used to have. That would
really
be nice.

I had never even heard of fastest_rsr until the Connoisseur guys
added it to
foxapi.cfg, but that of course does not affect AIM*Historian. That
would be
/opt/aim/bin/aimapi.cfg. Does fastest_rsr also apply there, or is
it
something different?

How does one obtain the Solaris Configurator? Is it part of the
you must
ante-up some more cash version 3.1, or can I get it for my current
version
3.02?

I did refer to I/A Report Writer, which I think is the same thing as
the
Foxboro Canada report package with a different name.

I've one Plant with 70s Series running 6.2 with AKP configured which

power-off/power-on.
From CSC no trace of this problem - as i can see - so why not ask

RE: upload timeout errors

2001-09-25 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

To be honest, I'm not sure.

I know it varies with the Control Station type (CP-10/30/40/60, CmP-15/30,
AW-I, microI/A, etc)

If I was dealing with this issue, I would compare the performance across the
stations while uploading and see if I could determine that.

I also suspect that it is linked to the amount of broadcast traffic in the
plant. This is harder to analyze without FoxWatch, but it should be
examined.

RE: telnet_mail and a poke at contact information.

2001-09-19 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

I do think that it is polite and wise to have all of your contact
information on an e-mail. I for one get plenty of e-mails where a simple
phone call would clear the issue whereas an e-mail conversation can be
confusing.

Given how easy it is within Outlook and Notes to apply a signature, I think
one should. Of course, not everyone can, but those that can really ought to.
It's the nice thing to do.

I did not second the proposal for security reasons.

Hi Duc,

I did the write up on the various methods of e-mailing. I would be
willing
to write it up more formally for the FAQ. I'll have it to you by

As far as contact information goes:
This is kind of silly. It is ridiculously easy to make an alternate

start
making phone calls before we answer questions on the list? Most of
the
information provided here is freely available to anyone willing to
read the
Foxboro manual set (although the list is often helpful with the
interpretation, tricks, etc). If this is a real security concern
then we
should start sending PGP authenticated signatures with the messages,
and do
we really want that?

I am also sending Mark Holts latitude and longitude to our spy
satellites
to see if he is really there.

RE: Information

2001-09-18 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

I can answer some of these: I'm not sure how well this will show up on the
mailing list, but I've used different fonts for the answers and questions.

1. What is an I/A Series Host?
There are two host types in the I/A Series:
* Boot hosts which are required by Control Stations (CP, DI, GW, etc.)
* Logical hosts which are required by WPs and the WP-side of an AW.

Boot hosts are those AW/APs which supply the configuration
information to a control station when it reboots. All I/A Series Control
Stations require a boot host. There is one and only one boot host per
Control Station.

Logical hosts are AWs/APs to which the WP looks for files if the
file is not found locally. It is also the machine to which the WP looks for
its Alarm History display.

a. How to know among many AWs on the same LAN Which AW-Node is a HOST ?

Any AW/AP can be a host. The file /usr/fox/sp/sldb indicates which
AW/AP is the boot host for a given control station. It contains four
columns:

Column 1 is the name (letterbug) of a station
Column 2 is the letterbug of the station's host
Column 3 is the letterbug of the station hosting the System Monitor
that monitors the control station
Column 4 is the System Monitor that monitors the health of the
station

b. Is it possible to have on the same node there can be more than one
HOST? i.e. One AW is a HOST for three AWs and another 2nd AW is HOST for
another five AW ?
Any given station has exactly one host.

AW/APs can be boot hosts to Control Stations
AW/APs can be logical hosts to WPs and WP-side of AWs.
Typically, AWs are their own logical host.

c. And all are on the same LAN?
A host (either type) must be on the same control network (CB LAN) as
the station it hosts. The host and the hosted station do not have to be on
the same Nodebus however.

d. How to define and where to define and where to define which is HOST?
The SysDef program is used to define all hosts.

2. Command to know the MAC address of AW
The ifconfig command (ifconfig -a) will provide this. The IP address
follows the word 'ether'.

3. Command to know the MHz of AW
/usr/sbin/psrinfo -v

will provide the information you want.

4. Command to know the Memory of AW
/usr/sbin/prtconf | grep bytes

will provide the information you want.

/usr/sbin/prtconf provides a lot more useful information.

5. Command to know the Last Dump Date of AW
List the file /etc/dumpdates.

6. Command to know the Current value of all the Analog Tags on
particular station
The best way is to record the data in the historian and use one of
the client tools like DataLink or I/A Series Report Writer.

The alternative is to use the tool 'getpars' in the directory
/opt/fox/bin/tools. There is a .man file there than can be read, but more
information is available in I/A Series Software Utilities [B0193JB/Rev D]

You should be very judicious in the use of this command since it can
place quite a burden on the Control Stations and the network if your query
is too broad.

7. Command to know the IP Address of AW
The ifconfig command (ifconfig -a) will provide this. The IP address
follows the word 'inet'. The Nodebus Ethernet port is going to be le0 or
hme0. The 2nd (and later) Ethernet port will have 1, 2, or 3 in place of
the 0.

8. Command so that while rlogin it does not require password.
Read the man page on rhosts. Basically, you add the name of the
trusted station to /.rhosts for the I/A Series.

9. Path ,Location for the password of FoxAnalyst
I don't know this one

10. Command to have default Display Manager/Foxview
Once FV is installed, there is a directory called /opt/fox/wp/bin.
In this directory is the file default_dm. You can choose either the DM or FV
by changing this file:

DM: cp /usr/fox/bin/dm_wp50 /opt/fox/wp/bin/default_dm
FV: cp /opt/fox/wp/FoxView/foxview /opt/fox/wp/bin/default_dm

Subsequent reboots will start the new default DM.

11. Path Location of all the Quick Fixes loaded.
The location of a QF is entirely dependent on the files being
installed. However, a list of QFs installed in you system can be found in
/usr/fox/sp/lastinst/QF_INFO. The documentation for each QF lists all of the
installed files.

2001-09-18 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

Re: I will be able to make the choice of a Windoze based system that has
logged a few hours running process facilities as opposed to helping Invensys
with development.

Without trying to address all of the issues being covered by this thread -
most of which are way beyond my purview, I must comment on this one
sentence. It seems to imply that we have no experience with MS Windows in
the Process Control market.

My points are:

* Foxboro/Invensys has been shipping I/A Series systems with Microsoft
Windows based WPs and AWs for as long or longer than any of our competitors
and
* All of our Microsoft Windows based stations are as capable of
running a big plant as the corresponding Solaris system.

With regard to the first bullet, I'm pretty sure that our 70-Series
pre-dates Honeywell's GUS on Intel platforms and may be even on the PowerPC
platform. I know it pre-dates Delta-V by several years.

In any case, while there are differences in the offered OSs and their
capabilities, please bear in mind that different companies feel differently
about operating systems and we believe that you should have a choice.

One last item, I'd like to remind you of two of our guiding principles. We
are committed:

* To sell our customers what they want and
* To support our products as long as they are needed by our customers.

Thanks for your time. I appreciate the open and honest feedback from you
folks. After all, you feed my family.

2001-09-18 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

It is my understanding that further announcements will be made, but I'm not
sure when. It's beyond my knowledge - ask me something technical. :-)

I replied because I want everyone to understand that the issue of field
proven operation of MS Windows based operator and application stations for
the process industries is not an issue when the topic is an I/A Series
system.

We have product in the field and probably more of it and for a longer time
than anyone.

Alex,

I think the threads concerning NT started when someone picked up on
an ARC
note that seemed to be saying Foxboro was migrating towards a new
architecture - essentially Wonderware on I/A NT. I wonder if some
one in
Foxboro Marketing could clarify the issue concerning the future
directions
of Foxboro I/A on Unix?

RE: training

2001-09-05 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

All,

I took the liberty of contacting Michael Bleyhl for the LifeTime Learning
Center for information on compressing our training cycle.

I think you will find his answer quite interesting. Please feel free to
contact Michael directly.

Michael wrote,

I appreciate Mr. Moore's feedback and I hope I can provide some
understanding and offer some assistance. With open enrollment tuition
courses the LifeTime Learning Center tries to meet the Average learners
comprehension pace. A down side to this approach is that it does leave some
students feeling that the pace the material is being covered is either to
slow or to fast. To address this issue the LifeTime Learning Center
(LLC) has several alternatives.
* Alternative #1: The LLC has scheduled accelerated regional training
courses in several cites across the United States. These are courses that
are normally 2 week courses in length but are accelerated to compress the
learning into 1 week. This is accomplished by spending less time in class
lecture and using more of a hands on lab approach with more of the learning
pace being the responsibility of the student. This type of course allows
students who are quick learners to be more efficient with their learning.
* Alternative #2: The LLC will work with you to create a custom
learning agenda that will cover just the learning objectives you or your
team is interested in and deliver that material in the appropriate time
based on the profile of your team.
* Alternative #3: The LLC has just launched a new e-learning site
powered by Smartforce a global leader in e-learning. This site will provide
targeted learning modules on selected Foxboro/Invensys products. E-learning
allows students to move at the learning pace they are most comfortable at
and is always available to go back to for any refresher learning needs.
Please check out a demo of the FoxCAE Backdocumentation application on our
site at www.invensys.smartforce.com http://www.invensys.smartforce.com

The LLC knows how valuable our customers time is and how valuable
learning/training is, and so we are trying to provide options so that the
LLC can provide the highest quality of learning with the most efficient
method of delivery.
Also any one who would like to talk to me about his or any other
learning/training need please feel free to call, all suggestions and
feedback is very welcome.

Does anyone know of a company that provides training on the Foxboro
I/A
system, besides Foxboro?
The training provided by Foxboro is very slow paced, and takes two
weeks to
cover one week of material.
Are there other alternatives?

thanks for you comments,

How is this example? It will look better if you put it in a file and use a

Now, look at CNTDWN

Subject:HLBL question

Hi list

i built an HLBL source where are defined some user labels for Real
Output with a name like OUT1 OUT2 and so on.
I've also an array (in a subroutine) with a S12 internal flag used
to
build the same name of the ones used for RO.
I made this because i need to reset to zero a certain real output
when a
given integer and boolean are passed to the sequence.

So the structure af the array is
sorg[1] := OUT1 ; sorg[2] := OUT2 ; .(sorg -- S12)

I call the subroutine at first step of the sequence and some steps
after
i've the IF clause wich test the status of a given boolean and use
the
array with a given integer .
I supposed to do
sorg[integer_input] := 0;
but nothing run.
It's probably because my array build a STRING which can't have a
real
value ???
If so how can i build the name of a given real output user label and
then put it to a given real value ???

(OK probably is the worst way to have this function but when i
started i
didn't know where i'll arrive...)

Thank's lot

RE: Ethernet port

2001-08-27 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

The ifconfig command can be used to reconfigure the port.

There is an update to the Ethernet driver to fix a number of defects. You
need to contact the Customer Satisfaction Center and ask about a QF for the
Ethernet Driver on 50 Series AWs. I don't remember the QF number.

Hi everyone,

I have a problem on the second ethernet port of an AW51, coneccted
to the
corporate network. Suddenly it ceased to recognize the network as if
we
diconeccted the cable (if you try a ping from the network it would
not answer).
No need to say that we already checked that we have network signal
at that port.
Is there any way to force the AW to rescan/reset this port without
rebooting it?
Thank you all in advance.

Subject:Ethernet port

Hi everyone,

I have a problem on the second ethernet port of an AW51,
coneccted
to the
corporate network. Suddenly it ceased to recognize the
network as if
we
diconeccted the cable (if you try a ping from the network it
would
not answer).
No need to say that we already checked that we have network
signal
at that port.
Is there any way to force the AW to rescan/reset this port
without
rebooting it?
Thank you all in advance.

RE: Ethernet port

2001-08-27 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

Here is the complete information:

There are 2 QFs. One for the le driver and 1 for the hme driver.

The le QF is appiled to 51A, 51B and 51C type stations.
The hme QF is applied to 51D and 51E type stations.

So, the table is:

Device Station Types QF
le 51a/b/c QF990944C
hme 51d/e QF992053B

I would make sure that anyone who is connected to a corporate network
install the correct QF for their machine. Check with your FS personnel for
more information.

The ifconfig command can be used to reconfigure the port.

There is an update to the Ethernet driver to fix a number of
defects. You
need to contact the Customer Satisfaction Center and ask
about a QF

RE: Portable PC

2001-07-27 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

Try Azonix ( http://www.azonix.com http://www.azonix.com ). They have
lots of interesting stuff. However, I doubt that you can get an
Intrinsically Safe portable PC since they have batteries. You might be able
to get a (rather heavy) explosion-proof device.

I assume that you've looked at our Mobil (Wireless) Workstation (PSS 21H 4W1

I think it is built by Hitachi so that might be another place to look for a
device.

RE: ListServer Archive

2001-07-14 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

Why wouldn't you use the DMCplus Bridge and run the controller on the
50-Series AW/AP?

It's standard product developed, sold, and supported by both AspenTech and
Foxboro. It provides access to all DMCplus Controller data through OM
Variables on the AP/AW. It builds a standard set of displays automatically
and can configure the historian.

It's dead simple to apply.

It's also pretty cheap.

RE: 70's SERIAL CARD

2001-07-11 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

Stefano,

The FoxPage package uses a Digiboard and a Multi-Tech MultiModem to add a
modem to an AW/WP 70.

The information on the required serial board, cable and APPROXIMATE US list
is as follows:

P0971SF DigiBoard 4 Port Serial Expansion Card$500.85
P0912SG Cable Cable for Serial Expansion Card $75.00

You can checkout Multitech at www.multitech.com http://www.multitech.com .
Their products have been excellent.

Just in case you are trying to do what FoxPage does, I'll send you the PSS
and manual separately. It might actually save you time and money.

RE: Aspen and WP70s

2001-07-11 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

An except from my book. I hope it helps:

Windows NT
Preliminary Decisions
Before attaching a Windows NT based I/A Series AW or WP to a company
network, several decisions must be made:

* Should the machine use the standard I/A Series Auto-login facility
or should each user login individually?
* What services to they need from the network, e.g., access to
printers and file servers, individual e-mail?
* Should the I/A Series machine to work as part of a domain within the
plant?

A domain-based solution is appropriate if individual user login is required
at the I/A Series workstations. If individual logins are not required, there
is probably no benefit to having the machine join the domain.

Workgroup Based Solutions
If they need access to network drives, the MapNetworks Drive option -
right mouse click on My Computer - can be used to access them. When user
of the machine tries to map the drive, the server will ask for a username
and password. The user name needs to include the user's domain, e.g.,
FOX_HOU\alex.johnson.

After the password has been entered, access to the drive is transparent.

If access to network printers is required, clicking on the
NetworkNeighborhood icon can lead to finding the desired printer. When the
domain that contains the printer is entered, the domain server will prompted
for a user name and password. Again, the user name must be entered with the
user's domain's name, e.g., FOX_HOU\alex.johnson. After that, access is
transparent.

If unque user logins are required, but it is not desired to be in a domain,
create a new user using standard techniques. Be sure that the new user
belongs to the same groups as the user 'fox'.

Use the I/A Series control panel and toggle auto login on and off. This will
cause the machine to reboot as the currently logged in user.

Domain Based Solutions
If a domain based solution is desired, the first step is to decide how
logins should be handled.

The default behavior is to have the machine boot up completely as user fox.
If the default user 'fox' is to be retained, yet a domain is to be used, the
following must be done to have the machine boot up in a domain:

* Open the Network control panel,
*   Select Identification,
*   Select Change,
*   Pick Domain,
*   Enter the Domain Name.
* If this machine isn't already part of the domain, and it won't be,
check Create a Computer Account in the Domain, and have your System
Administrator enter the required user name and password.

Note: Be careful about this. The I/A Series software depends on all of the
machines being able to talk to each other. So, it defaults to having them
all in the same workgroup. If you change some machines, but not all, nothing
good will happen.

If individual logins are required along with Domain membership, follow the
above steps and log in as that user.

Use the I/A Series control panel and toggle auto login on and off. This will
cause the machine to reboot as the currently logged in user.

Domain as Workgroup Based Solutions
Another alternative exists. In this case, the domain name is entered as the
workgroup name. In this configuration, the machines can see all domain
resources, but they cannot access them without a login.

For example, mounting a drive will prompt for a username and password
belonging to the domain.

This is an interesting compromise because it allows the resources to be
accessed without having the machine join the domain.

RE: HLBL REF.

2001-07-09 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

Okay, I'll say it.

My advice is do not use setpars on a running system. It is intended as an
application engineering support tool, e.g., to put CP's in simulation mode.

There are some places where its use can be considered to be appropriate,
e.g., setting some parameters like Computer Control timers, but they are
pretty few and far between. Many of these special cases can be dealt with
using the ICC Driver Task which at least checks for other configurators
being used on the target station.

Subject: RE: HLBL REF.

Re: Sequence Block Resources

HLBL is slow. Each line of HLBL code is roughly equivalent to the
CPU
requirements of an AIN block.

External references to CBPs in the same CP take even longer.

Re: Setting External OM Variables from within HLBL

HLBL allows OM variables (C:B.Ps and SVs) to be set directly using
the
following syntax:

:variableName := value;

where

variableName is a C:B.P name or a Shared Variable Name
value is the new value for the variable.

The leading colon is required. Two examples are:

:TOWER:OVRHD_LEVEL.SPT := 50.0;

:WP0001DMCMD := dmcmd applic /opt/prog/myScript $DMNAME ;

NAME := SN0001, DMCMD;
:'NAME' := dmcmd applic /opt/prog/myScript $DMNAME ;

This is documented in the appropriate manuals.

There are a couple of gotchas though:

1) If the variable being set is secured or missing, you will get an
operational error that will either cause an SBX to be fired or
suspend the
block.
2) Each external reference suspends the execution of the HLBL code
for one
block period if the target is outside the CP. If the target is
inside the
CP, the call does not suspend the code, but it can take quite a long
time.

The former issue is difficult to handle properly if one has several
external
references in the code since they will all fire the same SBX and you
will
probably want different handling for each case. Personally, I do not
use
this approach. I prefer to use a program like cpShell and send it
messages
from SENDCONF (see below).

The second issue causes subtle problems in the code. I had one
customer call
because his emergency shutdown logic took 10s to execute and it was
only 20
lines of code. The problem was that he did not know about the
suspension of
execution on an external reference. Since his block ran every 0.5
seconds
though, 10s to execute the code was as good as he could expect.

There is no workaround for this delay other than to not use external
references, i.e., connect the targets to the output of the block. Of
course,
that can lead to conflicts with the operator if the operator needs
to set
the same targets.

Re: Executing Scripts and Programs from a Sequence Block

There was a long discussion on how to run scripts on demand. The
options
boil down to:

* Using the external reference capability of HLBL to set the
DMCMD
global of a DM/FV instance
* Using SENDMSG or SENDCONF to send a message to a program
that will
execute the command.

There are issues with the first approach related to error handling,
i.e.,
what happens and how do you handle it if the DMCMD variable does not
exist
or someone overrides your command before it can be executed. These
are
actually quite difficult to handle.

The latter approach is much more controllable. The SENDCONF command
has a
timer. It suspends execution of the sequence block and sets the
SUSPND
parameter. When the SUSPND parameter is reset or the timer expires,
the
sequence block awakes. If it awakes because of a timeout, the flow
of
control goes to a particular part of your logic associated with
exactly that
failure. If it awakes because the SUSPND parameter is reset, the
flow of
control moves to the next line.

Sadly, we do not ship such an application with the standard system

RE: HLBL REF.

2001-07-09 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

Depends on what you are trying to do. If you want to the change to survive a
reboot, it must be reflected in the checkpoint file.

What are you doing that requires the use of setpars?

We currently only use the setpars tool after an unusual event, it

Do you recommend running a checkpoint after every use of the setpars

If the operators can interact with the process, I recommend
putting
GDEV
blocks to AUTO (then WAIT 2 seconds for the block to see it)
right
before
you use each one. It is the only way to be sure that the GDEV
will
be in
the correct auto/manual state when you need it to be. If you
are
going to
change state on several GDEVs, then you can put them all to
AUTO
followed
 by
 only one WAIT statement.

If you want to call the script that you have already written,
then I
am
going to have flex a few thoughts to remember how to do that.
Depending on
how you wrote the UNIX script, I believe that it may be a more
efficient
 use
of resources to rewrite it in HLBL. Is it a UNIX script, PERL,
C
code, or
--Heaven forbid-- JAVA? (I am assuming UNIX.) Does the script
use
Object
 Manager calls or API calls?

I'm curious now. Does any one know if HLBL is the most
efficient
use of
resources in this case? Does anyone know how to call an
external
script
 from within HLBL?

Subject:Fw: Station does not appear on-line

Online Gurus,

Where should I look first to find out why my FoxGuard
station (fault
tolerant) does not appear to be online. The stations are in a rack
with
other CP's that are fine, the lights at the bottom are green/red
when not
connected to the Triconex, and green only when connected to the
Tricon. In
FoxSelect, the station appears with a red circle and slash. In the
System
Manager its status is off-line. I cannot initialize the station
because I
cannot go on-line with it in the ICC. There are blocks in the ICC
that are
ready to be loaded to that station, but I am uncertain as to the
state of
the checkpoint file. When I unplugged it from the rack, there was
no change
in the System Monitor Equip Info page.

I suspect a SysDef issue, but am largely ignorant in that
area.

1) If the station comes up with a green light, does that
mean it has
booted from the AW? If so, why would the Sys Mgr still think it is
offline?

2) How can I reinitialize this station (assuming the
checkpoint is
in an unknown state)?

RE: ACM Module

2001-05-16 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

The document B0193MK Rev D has sizing information. I'll send Chad a copy.
The version of the document on my FoxDoc CD is Revision D and it lacks
sizing information.

Basically, it is about as fast as a CP-10 and can hold more blocks.

The Rev D document says that it can handle only 300 outgoing points. I
believe that this is a typographical error and that the number should be
3000, but I'm checking on it.

The AB interface options are:

*   Micro-I/A
*   over Ethernet
*   over AB-DH
*   DI-30 (FT or non-FT) over AB-DH
*   AW-I over Ethernet
* AB Station (Co-Processor board installed in the PLC/5)

For points per dollar, you should look at Micro-I/A. It is faster than the
DI for data transfer and has more RAM.

For a small and inexpensive total solution, the AW-I is appropriate.

For a system with redundancy requirements, use the DI.

There are lots of other points to ponder, but this is a summary.

V4.3 and V6.1 are identical except for a trailer disk that contains the

The ACM document is B0193VK Rev E. The one on FoxDoc is Rev D.

The Rev E edition has a significant amount of sizing information.
It

the amount of available RAM, the size of the blocks, the time

It should be noted that the ACM has had substantial improvements

days.

One other comment on Sequence Blocks:

Sequence Blocks are VERY CPU intensive.

The time to execute one simple line of Sequence Block code is roughly the
same as the time required to process an AIN block!

So, be cautious about using this approach on a large number of such inputs.

How would you do it in an IND block? From what I read in B0193AV
you

can't AND integers (for masking purposes) in an IND block.
snip
Assume I have two characters 'A' and 'B' (in that order) in the
register connected to RI01 of the CALC block. Therefore the
register

 contains 0x41 and 0x42.
snip

Rory,

In the ind block you can have RI0001 connected to your MAIN block
analog out (ie. PNT_1) where you are representing character pair
'AB'
as 0x4142.
RI0001 will be 16706.
Divide RI01 by 256 and truncate to get left hand character value of
65
(decimal representation of 0x41).
RI0001 MOD 256 will give you right hand character value of 66
(decimal
representation of 0x42).
A subroutine for mapping these decimal equivalents to ascii text
should
be simple, ie.
IF (char = 65) THEN
  char_out := A;
ELSEIF (char = 66) THEN
  char_out := B;
ELSEIF (char = 67) THEN
  char_out := C;
etc...

Don't forget that your sequence and PLB code could be out of date as well!

Generally, it is not lost and can be simply added to the backup machine by
copying the files named /opt/fox/ciocfg/cmpdName from the real system to

Subject:RE: Failed SaveAll -- the rest of the story

Thanks to all for all of your helpful suggestions.

Thanks to Alex for offering to examine my control database.
Unfortunately,
his prognosis (It's fried!) was not what I wanted to hear.

Thanks to Bo for his suggestion of using check_db_sync. I didn't get
around
to using it, but I'll have to make a note of checking into it before
the
next disaster drill. (And despite Bo's misgiving about automating
the
SaveAll job, I'll continue running this weekly job. I just have to
do a
better job of raising awareness among our group as to all the things
I'm
doing behind the scene. And to just say no!)

Here's how we fix our problem:

I'm fortunate to have the old hard drive for the host AW still
sitting
around since the last upgrade. Even though it was at v6.1, it's good
enough
for our purpose. I booted it up in an off-line node along with the
CP in
question (20CP02). I then did a LoadAll using a good SaveAll from
two weeks
back. Then it's just grunt work of comparing the list of blocks in
the
compounds between the off-line CP versus the real-life CP. We had to
delete
a compound and add a block to another compound to make the off-line
CP match
the on-line one.

At that point, I copied all of the files in /opt/fox/ciocfg/20CP02
(workfile
and all the .O files) from the off-line AW to the real-life system,
did an
upload and shrink. Then I verified that we now could do a SaveAll.
I
further verified that that SaveAll is good by loading it back to the
off-line CP. Everything is hunky-dory without having to initialize
and
reboot the CP.

Hope this may be of help to somebody who may end up in the same dire
strait
some day.

Regards,

Duc
