John,
I must assume you are looking at Unstructured FrameMaker users. In
Structured FrameMaker, if you haven't accommodated your Character Tags
with an Element, or Elements, both of the methods you list are blown
away as soon as you reapply the EDD.

My answer is through a Phrase Element that has, as attributes, Bold,
Emphasis (Italics), etc.

So for me, at least, since I've kept that lesson with me always, it's B.

Ditto, we use C. But we've managed to end up with a format named Bold too.
We use that when we want to make something bold and one of the named formats
doesn't apply. ;-(

Using character formats isn't necessarily foolproof. Last week, someone
accidentally updated one of our formats and made it use a particular font etc,
instead of being as is for everything but the property it wanted to change.
Don't suppose anyone knows of a way to prevent that?

A. Click the B and I buttons, or press Ctrl+B and Ctrl+I.
B. Select Bold and Emphasis from the Character Catalog.
C: Create special character formats with meta-information (purpose or
meaning).

then I use C, although it may appear sometimes that I'm using B. While
my brain was recovering from a bad sector, I named a character format
Bold rather than Strong. I also have some formats that use Italic
instead of Emphasis. The horror, the horror!

As Andrew noted, this may result in more tags or elements. Perhaps this
is a good thing, if it makes us re-examine our typographical
conventions.

Font substitution <sigh!> and Acrobat Distiller

2006-01-16 Thread s...@e-sim.co.il

Hi all,

I know this topic has come up repeatedly, but I still can't find
an answer to my problem.

Windows XP
FrameMaker 6.0p405
SetPrint plugin from Sundorne Communications
Acrobat Distiller 4.0

Whenever I open FM -- even when no document is opened --
and the Acrobat Distiller printer driver is chosen, the following
appears in the console:
The "Times" Font is not available.
It will be replaced by "Times New Roman".

To no avail, I have searched master pages, reference pages,
all tables, saved as MIF and searched the MIF files, cleared
the Remember Missing Font Names option. I can't find "Times"
anywhere.

FWIW, I don't use either font, so it does not interfere with my work.
But why do I still get this notice? What am I missing?

TIA,

Just double-checking...
In Word, the styles have a space in the (Heading 1), while in Frame, they
don't (Heading1). Did you rename the Word styles to match the Frame tags?
You might not be seeing overrides, but added styles/tags not in the catalog.

You were both on to something.

I went through and changed the format overrides to new formats as
suggested by Mr. Gold, but (thank you Microsoft) that came out with
about 100 (literally) different "Normal" formats (Normal1, Normal2,
etc), about 10 "Heading 11" formats, etc etc.

So, I went back to the original Word document and Mr. Creamer was
exactly right--the Word styles had a space in them. I tried to rename
the Word styles, but whenever I would rename them, they would come out
"Heading 1, Heading1". This reminded me why I had moved to Framemaker
in the first place :-)

I gave up on that approach and realized that while the imported formats
like *Heading 1 and *Normal were indicated in the window whenever I
selected that text, they did not show up in the Paragraph Format
catalog, nor did they show up in any pull down lists. However, using
the Global Update Options in the Paragraph Designer, I was able to
manually type in the name of the Word format I wanted to replace into
the "All Tagged:" box, replace all the "Normal" styles with the Body
format (etc.) and that worked!

Thanks to everyone, I'm sure I will have many more questions :-)

That's exactly the meaning of the asterisk: the format has been applied
but does not exist in the catalog. This occurs in Word imports when the
style and tag names don't match, but you can also cause this to happen
by applying formatting from the Designers without selecting "store in
catalog".

Setting Logical Page Numbering from FrameMaker

2006-01-16 Thread Joe Malin
Good morning, all!

Acrobat/PDF 7 has a feature called logical page numbering. This allows
you to display the PDF page numbers starting with 1 as the first page,
and also the document's page numbers, starting with whatever number is
on the first page (usually i). This accounts for front and back matter
in a book. The document page number appears in the page display at the
bottom, followed by the PDF number in parentheses.

Does anyone know if I can set this automatically from FrameMaker? I'm
using FM 7.1, unstructured, to print .PS files which I then pass through
Distiller.

To everyone who posts a URL to a site, especially if you are selling
something from it

when you enter a URL that starts with www, in most cases, it appears
as plain text. However, if you precede it with http://, it will
appear as a live hyperlink.

If I have to copy the text to a browser and paste it in the address
box of my browser, I probably won't bother unless I'm motivated.

OTOH, make it a live link and I'll usualy check it out, and who
knows...I may become interested in what I see.

ANN: Controlling Acrobat from FrameMaker

2006-01-16 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello All,

FrameScript 4 allows you to use Windows COM (or OLE) objects to control
other applications. For example, you can control Acrobat from FrameMaker via
FrameScript 4. If you use FrameScript for your FrameMaker to Acrobat
workflow, you can further process the Acrobat files using FrameScript.

One example is for TimeSavers users. Usually when you use TimeSavers or
Postscript text frames to create Acrobat objects via Distiller, the document
needs to be opened and saved after it is created. If you use FrameScript 4
to create the PDFs, you can open the PDF, save, and close it in the same
script.

If you have other ideas where this kind of programming would be useful,
please contact me offlist. Thank you very much.

Or:

C: Create special character formats that indicate the purpose or
meaning of the text (rather than their intended appearance) and apply
them.

Taking DocBook as my model, I've created GUILabel, GUIButton, and
GUIMenu formats -- all bold. Similarly, UserInput and Filename are
both Courier New italic. Doing it this way, I can change my mind
about how I want to display these inline text elements without having
to reapply character formats throughout the document. The same
applies to single-sourcing. I might want to render elements that are
formatted the same way in print differently in HTML.

Yes, this means I have more character formats than I might otherwise
have. No, I'm not using Structure. :-)

I created specific items in the Character Catalog and apply them
as needed. The Control-B and Control-I approach is too easy to
accidentally remove.

POLL: Which method do you use to apply bold and italics?

2006-01-16 Thread Joe Malin
If the methods are

"Bold" rather than "Strong". I also have some formats that use Italic
instead of Emphasis. The horror, the horror!

As Andrew noted, this may result in more tags or elements. Perhaps this
is a good thing, if it makes us re-examine our typographical
conventions.

Or:

C: Create special character formats that indicate the purpose or meaning
of the text (rather than their intended appearance) and apply them.

I wanted to, but I couldn't click the link. My other hand was holding
