Index woes -SOLVED

2006-05-10 Thread John Sgammato
Well, I figured it out.
I am indeed using the most recent version of ePublisher, and I am using
the index generated by the normal online help generation procedure.

One was something stupid I should have thought of,
The other was a little odd and maybe cautionary.

The missing links were links that had been conditional text, made
visible, but never un-conditioned. I should have remembered that I had
conditioned part of my own book!

The double-entry issue was weird.
I had a heading "VASCO Integration" with two subentries.
I had another heading "VASCO integration" (small "i") with one subentry.
ePublisher duplicated the first main entry, and then combined all three
subentries under each copy of the main entry.

When I renamed integration to Integration and regenerated, I ended up
with one main entry and three subentries, as I wanted.

Thanks for the ideas!

Are you allowing WWP to generate the index based on markers or are you
forcing the generation of HTML from the IX.fm file?

You should be able to select the graphic in Word and copy it to the
clipboard. Then paste it into a graphics tool, i.e., Photoshop. Then you
can save it as whatever format you prefer and import this, by reference,
into Frame.

I have been converting Word documents to FrameMaker 7.1. (Win 2K)

   1. Only the embedded Word graphics exist.
   2. All graphics in the FrameMaker document must be imported by
reference.

My solution was to copy each Word graphic into an FM document, save it
as a .fm file, and import the .fm file by reference into the FM
document. This has seemed to be a workable solution, and I've used it to

convert three manuals.of 100 pp. each.

I've created PDF files for two of the manuals (containing books with
several chapters), but the PDF fails in the case of the third manual In

this case, the problem seems to be with the graphic: each page after the

page containing the graphic shows a block of text the same size and in
the same position as the graphic on the page before.

This is probably a "primitive" solution for getting the graphics into
the FM documents. I'll be grateful for any suggestions for doing this a
better way.

Importing Graphics from Word

2006-05-10 Thread laura_j_k...@bd.com
I did this recently. I saved the Word doc as .html. This puts all the
graphics (it seems) into a folder in their native format/resolution.

The folder contained graphics in .wmf, .wmz, .emf, .emz, .png, .gif, and
.jpg formats. There was often a resized .jpg in the folder also.

Release Date for FrameMaker 8?

2006-05-10 Thread Nandini Garud
In a lecture at Silicon Valley STC API SIG, the technical honcho at Adobe
fielded questions on where FrameMaker was going. A few points:
* Enhancement of structured features for single sourcing, reuse of content,
and access to content across enterprise
* More support for XML and XSLT formats
* Creation of Help from XML/XSLT

The $200 upgrade works from not only 7.1, but also from 6.0. Therefore, for
enhanced book features and multiple undos and redos, it's worth every buck.
I upgraded to 7.2 and am quite happy about it.

managing condition tags

2006-05-10 Thread Rene S.
Hi All,

First, a big thank you for all the previous answers to my posts! The
knowledgebase held by the users of this list is one of my most valuable
resources. I have received more time-saving and insightful tips here than
anywhere.

Our department is growing by leaps and bounds, and we have the opportunity
to help set up a new documentation team. We can use our templates as a
springboard for the new team, but I would like to clean out all the
condition tags and variables that they won't be needing. I have set up a
dummy doc in the template book that uses only the condition tags and
variables that are needed in the new templates. I then used Toolbox to
remove the unused user variables from the book's variable catalog. Now, I'm
just left with...what to do to clean out the Conditional Text catalog

Is there a similar tool that will clean out the unused condition tags? If
not, is there at least a tool, plugin, or FrameScript that can provide a
report of all the condition tags used in the book? I think it is possible,
because View > Show/Hide Conditional Text does display all the tags in the
book. I can use FindChangeFormatsBatch to remap the unnecessary condition
tags to different tags or to a single tag, but then I'd have to open each
template file to manually delete each unnecessary condition tag, one at a
time.

Surely one of my colleagues has handled this situation adeptly in the past
and can point me in the right direction...?

Thanks!
Rene Stephenson

Release Date for FrameMaker 8?

2006-05-10 Thread Neil Tubb
Hi all,

Anyone have a clue as to Adobe's plans for the next major release of
FrameMaker? I'm trying to convince my boss to upgrade us to 7.2 from 7.1
(ooohh...multiple undos!), but he wants to know first if a major upgrade
is around the corner. Any insight here would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Neil

Importing Graphics from Word

2006-05-10 Thread Spreadbury, David
You should be able to select the graphic in Word and copy it to the
clipboard. Then paste it into a graphics tool, i.e., Photoshop. Then you
can save it as whatever format you prefer and import this, by reference,
into Frame.

Subject: Importing Graphics from Word

I'll be grateful for any suggestions for doing this a
better way.

Barb,

Another solution is to convert the Word Doc to PDF first. Then extract
each page with a graphic, crop and rotate as necessary, and save with
your preferred file name. Now you can import the extracted pdf graphic
by reference.

Re: Importing Graphics from Word

2006-05-10 Thread Laura_J_Kirk
I did this recently. I saved the Word doc as .html. This puts all the
graphics (it seems) into a folder in their native format/resolution.

The folder contained graphics in .wmf, .wmz, .emf, .emz, .png, .gif, and
.jpg formats. There was often a resized .jpg in the folder also.

Not so strange; read the Help topic "Setting the page layout and
orientation".

The buttons on the toolbar change the View, not the orientation. The
Acrobat Help explains that a rotated View is not saved, and that you
need to use the Document > Pages > Rotate command to change and save the
orientation.

managing condition tags

What I have is content we import in into a 1-column proofing template. Since
the tables that come in with this information are different sizes, we were
wondering if there was a global setting to fit all tables in one column --
7.25" in width. This would help with editing and proofing.
Right now we have to select each table and use the resize function to get
the table adjusted correctly.

The difference in behavior you note is because the toolbar button

printing framemaker documents

2006-05-10 Thread Art Campbell
If you are printing from FM to a hard copy printer, no, there isn't a way
to automatically orient pages in different directions. I think the assumption
is that you can rotate the piece of paper or the bound book.

If you're printing from FM to Acrobat, there is an "Automatic Rotation"
setting that should give you the effect you want.

If you're doing something else, you need to provide more details, please.

Strange..

Not so strange; read the Help topic "Setting the page layout and
orientation".

The buttons on the toolbar change the View, not the orientation. The
Acrobat Help explains that a rotated View is not saved, and that you
need to use the Document > Pages > Rotate command to change and save the
orientation.

The difference in behavior you note is because the toolbar button
rotates the view - the appearance of the page, while Document >
Rotate Pages actually rotates the page(s).

Re: printing framemaker documents

2006-05-10 Thread Art Campbell

If you are printing from FM to a hard copy printer, no, there isn't a way
to automatically orient pages in different directions. I think the assumption
is that you can rotate the piece of paper or the bound book.

If you're printing from FM to Acrobat, there is an "Automatic Rotation"
setting that should give you the effect you want.

If you're doing something else, you need to provide more details, please.

Re: printing framemaker documents

2006-05-10 Thread frame user

If I print the framemaker files seperately, then the orientation is correct.
If I print all files via a book then everything is portrait, the text is
correct positioned on the page but I have to rotate the page 90 degrees in
acrobat then to be able to read it.

So that a landscape page in an otherwise portrait book/file is rotated

Or are you asking about something else?
