invisible mif2go files created in VPC on Mac

2009-03-12 Thread Graeme R Forbes
I'm trying to convert a MacFM 7 document to rtf, using mif2go plugged
into FM7.1 on XP in Virtual PC running in Classic under Tiger on my
Mac. I did this once before, a couple of months ago, no problem. This
time I do the exact same thing and I end up with the rtf file, I
think, but it's invisible on my Mac (even to search for invisible
files) both in the Finder and to MacFM and Mac Word. But both
Windows FM and Windows Acrobat Reader can see the file (and others
that were created during the conversion). I don't have Windows Word
and need to be able to see the file outside Windows to work on it.
Any ideas why it remains stubbornly invisible on my Mac (even to file
utilities like FileExaminer)?

Thanks,
Graeme Forbes

Re: invisible mif2go files created in VPC on Mac

2009-03-12 Thread Amnon Yaish
Graeme,

If Virtual PC works even remotely similar to Fusion, then any of its
files would exist only as part of some archive of the program, visible
only from the program itself. This is probably very normal and not a problem.
If so, your only alternative would be to export it from some Windows/
virtual PC program to a Mac folder, if Virtual PC allows that (I don't
know the program). In Fusion it is child's play and can be done in
several ways, the easiest being drag and drop from the virtual Windows
desktop to the Mac's...

Amnon.

FM, single-sourcing 101

2009-03-12 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
It really depends on how much reuse you have and how much of an
investment you want to put into this, or if you can afford to invest in
an outsourcing company to help with you with the conversion and training.

When I came to my current company they were using Unstructured Frame,
but were not using any of it's single-sourcing capabilities. Our company
has some similar products that have a few chapters that are almost
identical. For those products I made a separate books for each product,
and shared the chapters that were almost identical between the books,
with conditional text marking the differences within the shared
chapters. There is another product that has a few versions that are
almost identical, accept for a few sections. For that product I have
everything in one book, with conditional text for those sections. I also
have some sections (like Technical Support) that I save in separate
Frame files and insert them into all the manuals as text insets. The
shared chapters and text insets I store in a central location.

It's tempting for me to move to Structured Frame, but that would require
a lot of time to set it up, to learn, and to convert the content. I
don't think the needs of my company require that investment. Whether
your company would benefit from Structured Frame or Structured Frame +
DITA depends on how much reuse of content there is, whether they
translate into other languages, etc.

The single-sourcing features of Unstructured Frame are not that hard to
learn, and you could implement it at your own pace.

Good luck.

differ in detail in minor ways, and fewer sections differ in more
substantial ways. Currently they are all Frame books with each chapter being
its own file within the book. There is no re-use of anything at the moment.

This is becoming increasingly burdensome to maintain, as a change to
something that appears in all seven manuals requires me to make that change
manually in all seven files. I would like to get to re-use, or
single-sourcing, but I’m puzzled as to how to get there. Would the best
 strategy be:

 (a) To use conditional text and generate several versions;

 (b) To try and convert everything to XML and sew things together based on
 individual XML files;

 (c) Something else?
I have zero XML knowledge, and whenever I read about it, my head hurts. I am
willing to learn, but the benefit needs to be commensurate with the pain
involved in learning. I’m looking for the simplest solution that allows for
some common source material using my existing Frame configuration. Ideas are
 appreciated.

FM 8 crashes again and again

2009-03-12 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA

It happens when I update the book, generate pdfs and often I cannot see

Hi Verner,

I didn't count, but I have the same experience. Indeed, FM7 was A LOT more
stable and robust.

I haven't really put FM 9 to the test for production work yet. I assume the
Adobe folks are also monitoring this list, let's hope they've listened to
the users.

FrameMaker has always been renowned for its stability. I hope it will stay
that way.

On my systems, 8 is more stable than 7 was, especially on book
actions. 9 is also fine.

Given others' experiences, I'd guess that your problems are caused by
one or more things in your environment, but you didn't provide any
details.

If you provide some details on your system (FM and Acrobat versions,
OS, RAM, temp space) and your environment (files local or on a server,
type of graphics and imported by reference or copied, and so on) I'm
sure the usual suspects would be happy to generate some things to look

I work in this way too.
A number of books, with the common chapters the same, some text insets too.
What I wanted to add, was not to forget to document what you are doing. Even if
you are a lone writer, you may sometimes have time between working on books. I
have a text file in each book directory reminding myself how I set it all up,
which conditions should be applied when and whatever else is relevant.

Joel, I'm with Gillian on this one.

Using this approach (and variables on title pages and in running headers and
footers for book titles) I managed a pretty complex set of deliverables: two
versions each of 10 major guides, and three versions of a training guide that
contained pared-down chapters from each of the major guides. I also produced
context sensitive help from the same set of FrameMaker source files.

Because I used Frame 7.2, handling the conditions was tricky, but creative use
of color (red + green = brown) enabled me to construct a system of 16 possible
combinations that I could keep track of without too much trouble. The trick was
to plan the whole thing out in advance, make it logical and easy to remember,
and to be absolutely rigorous about not straying from the rules. As a one-woman
department, I was tempted at times to do a little ad hoc conditionalizing, but
I knew that the whole thing hinged on sticking to the structure I'd created.

I'm sure others have done even more complicated schemes and as Gillian points
out, it's easier and cheaper than DITA.

...Susan

Gillian wrote:

The easiest way to do it is the following:

1. Have 7 Frame book files
2. The book files can share chapter files that are mostly similar;
likewise, they don't share chapters that are radically different for
each manual.
3. Within the chapters, apply conditional text to the minor differences

With this method, you simply set the conditions as needed before your
build your book. When you build your book or PDF, you generate the
manual and only the text conditioned to that manual displays.

This is the method that I use. It's much easier, cheaper and manageable
then DITA.

Re: FM 8 crashes again and again

2009-03-12 Thread Art Campbell
Verner,

If I was going to pick one thing to play with to see I could change
the crash behaviour, it would be the text insets inside tables on
master pages. That's the only thing that strikes me as possibly hard
to process in your set up from the info you provided. I haven't used
insets in tables myself, even in body pages.

Unless you've turned updates Off on those insets, I think they'd be
constantly trying to update themselves, possibly whenever a new body
page is generated from them or they're otherwise referenced by the
program. And because the insets are likely to be on a network
location, there's an additional possibility of a network delay or
timeout interrupting the process. Updating masters may also be the
problem when you force an override to the layout by changing text
container properties.

To play with that idea a little bit, you might try making a copy of
your working files and converting the text insets to text, so no
updating is required. Then work with that copy a bit to see what
happens. Just a thought.

Cheers,
Art

Re: Dual page numbering

2009-03-12 Thread Art Campbell
To get back to the original topic

It sounds to me as if the solution would be a FrameScript that would
do the absolute page counting outside the document and insert a text
value based on the script's page count. And it would need a loop to
remove existing numbers when you ran it to update. Any of you
Scripters care to comment on whether that would work or not?

The other tier, Chapter-PG numbering, is easy to set up inside FM.

[semi-OT] Anyone having problems with this morning's Acrobat and Reader patches?

2009-03-12 Thread Art Campbell
I'm working in a mixed Acrobat 8/9 environment, and in the wake of
applying the 9.1 upgrade to my system, things have gotten a little
strange.

(Because some co-workers are running 8, I think they received the
complementary 8 security patch to fix the Java execution security
hole, but I don't _know_ that.)

In any case, after the required system reboot, the first time I ran
9.1 Acrobat, some tools -- like the Comment set -- didn't exist. I
shut it down and restarted Acrobat, and they showed up.

At about the same time, my co-worker was working in 8 on a shared
review on a remote server. Her existing comments didn't show up. The
review server is also acting flakey.

Any thoughts? Anyone having similar issues?

Thanks,
Art

RE: [semi-OT] Anyone having problems with this morning's Acrobat and Reader patches?

2009-03-12 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Art, I am two weeks into the trial of Illy CS 4 and suddenly began
encountering the dreaded Not enough memory error right after accepting
the Reader upgrade this morning. It was a bit mortifying, to say the
least, to not be able to open any of my graphics files with Illustrator!
I immediately uninstalled Reader 9.1, rebooted, and reinstalled the
Illustrator CS 4 trial. Then off to lunch, and just back. I'm hoping for
the best, and about to learn whether that is a vain hope or not.

I'm running Frame 7p1 for the moment (though will be testing TCS2 very
soon). Also using Acrobat Pro 6 (another reason why I'm ready to test
TCS). System is XP SP 2, and I have 2 GB of RAM.

Moderately Urgent! Cross-references within multiply used text insets

2009-03-12 Thread Lin Sims
I have a file which uses text insets repeatedly. That is to say, the
same text inset is imported more than once AS an inset. Each inset has
cross-references to information within the inset only.

Before I print to PDF, I convert the insets to text and regenerate so
that the cross-references become clickable. The problem is that only
the FIRST instance of each text inset use has clickable links. Every
succeeding instance links back to the first instance, not to the
current position.

Right now I'm manually updating, but for the next time I use this
document, I'd like to know if there's a faster/better way of doing
this. These insets allowed me to write about 50 pages instead of 250,
so I don't want to convert them to text and leave them that way. It'd
be a maintenance nightmare. On the other hand, manually updating a
couple hundred links isn't my idea of fun, either.

Help!

Perts:

Windows XP, SP3
Frame 8, p277
Acrobat 7

I do not have FrameScript.

Your CPU usage is completely unrelated to your memory usage. The former
relates to how much processing is being done at the moment (e.g.,
generating a gradient fill). The latter relates to how many applications
and files you have open. If you have 30 files open in FM or AI, you're
using a lot of memory even when the applications are idle (using no CPU
time).

An update

I just tried to create a shared review with the patched Acrobat 9.1,

Any thoughts? Anyone having similar issues?

2009-03-12 Thread Daniel Frankham
I'm not sure I fully understand the problem. I presume the Para f:* footnote
ref" isn't what I would call a tag, but a style?

This may be worth a try:

Select all of one of the errant paragraphs.
Open the character designer dialog (Format/Characters/Designer)
Change Character Tag to Default Paragraph Font (or whatever is appropriate
for your paragraph).
De-select the superscript check-box and click Apply.

(I applied a footnote character format to a whole paragraph of text in one
of my documents, and when I tried to change it back to normal paragraph text
it retained the footnote formatting until I did the above. It needed to be
manually told that it shouldn't be a superscript any more.)

Alternatively, the easiest solution may be to copy the text to a text
editor, delete the text from your document, and paste it back in from the
text editor.

Anyone know where to find BeauxIX c. FM 6?

2009-03-12 Thread Hedley Finger

BeauIX was a plug-in for massaging indexes last heard of for FM 6
(although a ghost lurks on the Leximation tools pages). Does anyone
know where to find Stefan Petrucha or a reliable download site for
BeauIX? I take it he does not write mystery stories for teens in his

invisible mif2go files created in VPC on Mac

2009-03-12 Thread Graeme R Forbes
I'm trying to convert a MacFM 7 document to rtf, using mif2go plugged
into FM7.1 on XP in Virtual PC running in Classic under Tiger on my
Mac. I did this once before, a couple of months ago, no problem. This
time I do the exact same thing and I end up with the rtf file, I
think, but it's invisible on my Mac (even to "search for invisible
files") both in the Finder and to MacFM and Mac Word. But both
Windows FM and Windows Acrobat Reader can see the file (and others
that were created during the conversion). I don't have Windows Word
and need to be able to see the file outside Windows to work on it.
Any ideas why it remains stubbornly invisible on my Mac (even to file
utilities like FileExaminer)?

Thanks,
Graeme Forbes

invisible mif2go files created in VPC on Mac

2009-03-12 Thread Amnon Yaish
Graeme,

If Virtual PC works even remotely similar to Fusion, then any of its
files would exist only as part of some archive of the program, visible
only from the program itself. This is probably very normal and not a problem.
If so, your only alternative would be to export it from some Windows/
virtual PC program to a Mac folder, if Virtual PC allows that (I don't
know the program). In Fusion it is child's play and can be done in
several ways, the easiest being drag and drop from the virtual Windows
desktop to the Mac's...

re-use 101

2009-03-12 Thread Caroline Tabach

2. The book files can share chapter files that are mostly similar;
likewise, they don't share chapters that are radically different for
each manual.
3. Within the chapters, apply conditional text to the minor differences

With this method, you simply set the conditions as needed before your
build your book. When you build your book or PDF, you generate the
manual and only the text conditioned to that manual displays.

This is the method that I use. It's much easier, cheaper and manageable
then DITA.

Good luck.

FM 8 crashes again and again

2009-03-12 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
I just counted. My Framemaker 8 crashed more than 80 times since June
last year. Framemaker 7 was so stable and robust.

It happens when I update the book, generate pdfs and often I cannot see
action that should cause the crash.

Do you experience the same? Is FM 9 more stable?

FM 8 crashes again and again

2009-03-12 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Verner,

I didn't count, but I have the same experience. Indeed, FM7 was A LOT more
stable and robust.

I haven't really put FM 9 to the test for production work yet. I assume the
Adobe folks are also monitoring this list, let's hope they've "listened" to

FM 8 crashes again and again

2009-03-12 Thread Andersen, Verner Engell VEA
Fair enough
I include my system details below.

I suspect that my problem has to do with the Framemaker source files as the
rest is unchanged from FM version 7.2 apart from my Windows Service pack 3.
In particular Fm crashes when encountering files with text insets in tables on
master pages or sometimes when I change the object properties on body pages and
remove the "room for sidehad setting"

My system settings:

Windows xp sp 3
FM8.0p277
2 GB ram
756 MB virtual memory
Acrobat Profession 7.2
Files on server
Graphics are .png imported by reference
Lots of text insets used by several books

FM 8 crashes again and again

Cheers,
Art

Well, that settles it, doesn't it? :-)

I didn't realize this was your customer. I assumed that this was a
request from a peer or another dept.

Dual page numbering

Thanks,
Art

[semi-OT] Anyone having problems with this morning's Acrobat and Reader patches?

2009-03-12 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Art, I am two weeks into the trial of Illy CS 4 and suddenly began
encountering the dreaded "Not enough memory" error right after accepting
the Reader "upgrade" this morning.

Is it possible that the new releases use more memory, and are running
into a memory hardware problem? Can you run a diagnostic on the RAM

Your CPU usage is completely unrelated to your memory usage. The former
relates to how much processing is being done at the moment (e.g.,
generating a gradient fill). The latter relates to how many applications
and files you have open. If you have 30 files open in FM or AI, you're
using a lot of memory even when the applications are idle (using no CPU
time).

I had this happen too ... indeed strange. I did not bother to check to

in .pdf header?

2009-03-12 Thread Bill Rost
I'm working in FrameMaker 7.2 and have 20+ books based on a boilerplate
template.

In a .pdf of one of the books, instead of seeing the current page number
(1, 2, and so forth) in the header, I saw every page number, prefixed
with "". The other books show the page number without the
prefix.

So, I compared the headers in Master Pages of the problematic book with
the boilerplate template Master Pages. The Master Pages header of the
problematic book shows "Running H/F 1 #" (without question
marks). When I select "#" and look at Variables, it translates
to Current Page # and when I click Edit I see "<$curpagenum>".

In the boilerplate template Master Pages (and Master Pages of other
books), the variable is "Running H/F 1 #" and the pound sign is in red.
When I select the "#" and look at Variables, it translates to Current
Page #. When I click Edit, I see "<$curpagenum>".

So, what I'm seeing in the problematic book Master Pages breaks down in
Variables to being the same as what I see in the other books. It's the
appearance of the variable in Master Pages that is different.

I've searched FrameMaker Help and this list for info about and
about displaying variables, without success. I've reimported variables
from the boilerplate template without success. Is there a display
setting that is causing this problem? Is the construction of the
variables the problem? What does the red color on the # sign mean? How
do I fix this problem?

I've learned a lot about FrameMaker by following the discourse on this
list, thanks to all you EXPERTS who provide the answers! Hope you can
help me with this issue.

Visio to FMKR

2009-03-12 Thread Susan Curtzwiler
Hi all Framers
I need to add some Visio flows (currently in Word) that take up the size of a
full portrait page.
I copied and used paste special > Bitmap into a portrait FrameMaker page. The
Visio fit fine on one page, but it jumped to the next page. I had the cursor
at the top of a regular page.

I'm thinking of creating a Master page with a smaller header to give a little
more space.

Does anyone have other suggestions, or is there any problem with my approach.

Thanks,
