Option 2 worked great. But I have a question.
In that setup page there is this note (partial excerpt):
If you always regenerate PDF after adding new links, turn this setting
OFF. This is the recommended setting.

I regenerate the FM file to do updates and to get ready to make a new
PDF,,, but I'm not regenerating a PDF file.

Could you please explain this for me?

I'm afraid you have to try and and approach the original author for an
explanation of the recommendation present in the dialog box...

The more named destinations you have in a PDF, the larger the file size is.
This setting was introduced in FM6 to help reduce the PDF file size.

When Create Named Destinations for All Pgfs is turned off , some
cross-references and hypertext links may be non-functional in the PDF.

I much prefer a PDF where all links work as expected, even if its file size
is larger by 20-25%.

If the file size is critical, I would recommend other ways to reduce the
file size (including that portion related to named destinations, but not
through FrameMaker).

Unfortunately, there is no lack of PDFs authored in FM demonstrating the
outcome of having this option turned off, including PDFs from Adobe -- see
http://www.microtype.com/Hmmms.html#0605 (109 bad links in Adobe FrameMaker
7.2 Structure Application Developer's Guide).

RE: Mif2Go graphics question

2009-09-10 Thread Martha Lee
Hi Jeremy et al,

I do want to use the original graphics; as you said, generating them results
in poorer quality. The wrap path and the CopyGraphicsFrom directory are not
the same; they have the same name, but are in different locations. The wrap
path is C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMS+OmniHelp\MEMSplus. The CopyGraphics
directory is on the C:\rep\documentation\trunk\MEMSplus. But if I change the
wrap directory to some other name, it doesn't solve my problem.

Changing the StripGraphPath to Yes still doesn't get my graphics into the
wrap directory. This is driving me nuts. Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

This setup says that you really have the .gif and .png graphics already in

Is that correct? That's not the *same* MEMSplus dir you are referencing

where you were running this from. It shouldn't be, or you'd be saying
to copy them to themselves, which does nothing (and is in fact ignored,
we check for that).

Also, it's better to have the wrap and ship dirs separate. For
OmniHelp, you typically run an ArchiveCommand to .zip the results
in wrap, and then we move that zip to ship. Many projects can
share the same ship; it makes distribution much easier if they do.

If you actually want graphics generated (which is poorer quality, if
you already have them available), as David thinks, you'd need to set
[Graphics]UseGraphicPreviews=Yes.

Also, if you use StripGraphPath=No, and don't set a GraphPath, you
are saying to preserve the original paths from the Frame files.
Those are unlikely to work. If you are putting the graphics in
the same dir as the HTML, you definitely want StripGraphPath=Yes.

I've had an Olympus D2 for several years and it works great. It is a
USB device, so it's easy to move files back and forth either with
Windows or the Olympus software. Also has an external jack so you can
add a better stereo mic if you want to record music, or a shotgun mic
for picking up a distant speaker.

Before you buy, you may want to do a search for voice recognition

can a chapter in a book be set to conditional?

2009-09-10 Thread Ragnar Hanas
I have produced 2 books from one using conditional text for UK and US
spelling and metric units and those parts of the text that are different.
The forewords are different, and here whole pages are conditional. If you
have the appendix in a different file, you could just make that whole text
conditional, and in the book where the appendix is not needed, you would
just be adding an extra blank page when all the conditional text is hidden
(or insert a conditional picture on this page if you don't want it blank). I
much prefer to have only one book, since most of the updates are needed in
both language versions.

My objection to building two books is the risk of producing a wrong
manual because I forgot that I had an extra book for one of the manuals
(you all know that things can get rather hectic close to a deadline).
What I have done until now for the 3 products is that I changed the
variables and the conditional text settings to produce the specific
manual. The cover pages are added to the pdf file, they are done in a
different program, so no advantage here for working with three books.
Two books for 3 manuals will be the solution, and I have to note down in
my procedure that there is a separate book for one of the three manuals.

Thanks for all the feedback, have a nice day everybody,

What is your objection to building two books? That's the way FrameMaker
is designed to work. If it weren't for the ability to build different
