creating oversize PDFs

2009-11-10 Thread Fred Wersan
I am trying to create a PDF file from a FrameMaker document that is
approximately 18x36 format. I am using FrameMaker 8 and Acrobat Pro 9.

I choose Adobe PDF as my printer and create a custom page size. But I
keep getting 0 size ps files or no PDF at all when I print straight to PDF.

I've managed to get this sort of thing to work in the past, but am
having no luck this time.

Any one have an idea what I might be doing wrong? I don't think it's the
content of the document, since when I shrink it, it prints OK to letter
size.

If anyone knows of a different print driver that might work printing to
file, that would be fine too. I can get 12 x 24 from a Konica print
driver, but it won't let me pick a custom size larger than that.

SV: creating oversize PDFs

2009-11-10 Thread Jacob Schäffer
The best way to create custom page sizes is to use Windows Forms.

Select Control Panel - Printers Faxes - File Menu - Server Properties
- Forms Tab.

Give the form a name and a Width/height. REMEMBER that Width is ALWAYS the
shortest edge -- unless you want trouble. If Width actually is larger than
Height, then use Landscape mode instead.

By doing so you get rid of using the Custom PostScript Size page property in
the print menu; also the new form will be added to ALL printers on your
system that support custom paper sizes.

Cheers.

Reducing from 1200 dpi to 600 dpi may not cause serious havoc, but if you
reduce resolution any further you'll have very visible artifacts at smaller

Hence, if you possibly can avoid reducing output resolution you definitely
should.

FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-10 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI All,

I'm working in FM8 - TCS, unstructured, on Windows XP Pro

I have a few questions:
1. Does anyone know of a way to get FM to stop creating the recovery files for
when FM crashes?

Lately, I'm working on an incredibly large book and whenever I change my
conditional text settings, update the book and then try to create my PDF, FM
crashes. I don't need those recovery files, and would like to disable their
creation if possible.

Question 2 is whether anyone knows how to get FM to stop crashing altogether
when attempting to create the PDF -

I seached the archives and came across a suggestion for a Windows Hotfix -
Question 3: Have any of you used the hotfix? Does it cause any other problems
or does it actually fix the problem?

Thanks,
Orly Z.

Upgrading to FM 9.0 and Word filters

Before upgrading, would appreciate advice or comments from the list.

In addition to (1) general curiosity as to any compelling reasons to

filters. In 7.2, I wasn't particularly impressed either with saving a

Hi folks,

I'm hoping the combined mega-brain that is the frameusers forum can
help me out with a problem...

I've just upgraded from Frame 7.2 to Adobe Tech Comms Suite 2 (Frame
9.0p237). I'm running Frame under Windows XP, SP2, using Parallels
Desktop 4 on my Mac (OS X 10.5.6). I have applied all the Adobe
updates to the Tech Comm Suite components.

Now, I can't print book files using the AdobePDF driver. Frame 9 gets
part-way through the job then crashes with an exception. This has also
broken my Frame 7.2 printing (I guess installing the new Acrobat Pro
stomped all over the existing Distiller/AdobePDF installation; job
options moved/disappeared, and so on).

 From Frame 9, I get:

Internal error 9004, 6920492, 9676798, 0. Framemaker has detected a
serious problem and must quit.

The FrameLog file has this (along with loads of text that probably
isn't helpful):

Internal Error: 9004, 5998149, 4768373, 4768714

Also, from Frame 7.2, as well as the ... must quit error, I get:

The instruction 0x0035199f referenced memory at 0x. The
memory could not be read.

I *can* print individual files (opened from the book, but printed from
the individual file, not the book's File menu).

I tried using a different PPD (a Postscript), but no dice.

I looked on the interweb and found a couple of things that looked
promising:

http://iconlogic.blogs.com/weblog/2009/02/adobe-framemaker-it-wasnt-my-fault.html

Tried trashing the font cache and rebooting: no joy; tried looking for
the Microsoft hotfix that supposedly restores balance in the universe:
you have to ask for it, rather than download it, and there only
appears to be an English version for XP SP4 - SP4 doesn't exist!

I'm stumped. If any of you guys can help. I would be very pleased.
BTW, I have also installed Toobar Express from Microtype, and the
customized toolbars that were made available recently by Klaus Daube
(free of charge, http://www.daube.ch/docu/fmaker55.html ). I may try
uninstalling those, to see if it helps (but I doubt it).

Thanks in advance,

Martin

Re: Creating a compare from one book to another

2009-11-10 Thread Philip Sharman
Hi Paul,
Sadly, I don't know of a faster way to compare two books But it does
sound as though you don't need to fix the cross-references. If they aren't
going to actually be used, who cares if they are broken? The new book is
only being used to compare old and new, so I would leave them as they are.
   Cheers,
  Philip.

On Fri, Oct 30, 2009 at 9:47 AM, jopakent jopak...@comcast.net wrote:

I've done this a bunch of times in years past, and it occurs to me that
mebbee I'm making this harder than it has to be.

Using FM7.2 on Win XP, I need to create a PDF that indicates all insertions
and deletions between the current draft and the released version of a
manual. It has about 20 chapters and a dozen or so appendices, and a pretty
 fair number of illustrations.

What I've been doing is opening up the old book and the new book and then
using the file compare utility. That produces a slew of CMP files (for
 example Intro.fm produces IntroCMP.fm).

Once I've created the CMP files I, move them to another directory that I've
set up to mirror the structure of the existing book. Nothing too intricate,
just a text folder and an image folder.

The resulting book seems to work pretty well for producing a PDF. Before I
produce the PDF, I generally look through and examine each of the
 insertions
and deletions for validity. It seems like a fair number of what FM
 detects
as changes aren't really changes, maybe a file name changed, or maybe it's
moved location by a paragraph, or I dunno, sometimes it seems pretty
 random.
At any rate, I remove the formatting form the changes that aren't really
 changes.

 So, for the questions.

Because I've got a new book formed from files with different names from the
old book, all of the cross references are broken. This brings up a couple
 questions:

1st, is there a simple tweak I could make to my workflow that would keep
 all
 of the x-refs from breaking?

2nd, does it matter if the x-refs are broken (see explanation below)?

3rd, if it does matter, what's the best way to fix them? I've been using
search to find them, and then clicking away until I've repaired each one.

I got through chapters the other night and then stopped to think about it a
bit. Seems way too labor intensive doing it by hand. I'm guessing that I
could probably save all the files to MIF and then do some search and
replaces to speed up the process.

I'm wondering if it's even necessary to fix the broken x-refs. All of the
broken cross references still display properly. I know if I made
 substantive
changes, they wouldn't be indicated properly, but the purpose of this book
is not to move forward and be released. It's just created so that reviewers
can be pointed to what's new in the current revision. I'll be making any
changes to the actual manual. Am I missing something important here?

Thanks in advance for those with the patience to offer insights.

I'm not sure whether the FM9 Word filter is different than the FM9 filter.
In any case, in my recent Word-FM conversions projects I analyzed
the results of both FM8 and FM9 filters, and found out that using the
FM7.2 filter produced better results. So even though the client required
FM8 files, I imported through FM7.2 and then opened the FM files in FM8.

If you like to use keyboard shortcuts for tag assignment: unfortunately,
these do not work consistently in FM9 (even with all patches applied).
[eg F9 or Ctrl-9 for paragraph tags;  F8 or Ctrl-8 for character tags;
Ctrl-0 for variables; Ctrl-4/5/6 for conditions]
While I still try and use these shortcuts out of habit, I *often* have to
resort to opening the catalogs or pods to apply tags or insert variables.

Also, the new CMYK support can be better ignored for the time being.
When Saving as PDF, Convert CMYK Colors to RGB should be
turned ON (which restores the state available with previous FM
versions), or else various problems may be encountered (including
font changes in the PDF, e.g. Arial Narrow showing as Times New Roman).

If you identify some compelling reasons to upgrade to 9.0 that apply
to you needs, probably the best next step is to install FM9 for a trial of
one month and evaluate its new interface and features while working
on a typical project.

Re: FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-10 Thread Art Campbell
How much RAM and free disk space do you have? Creating the PDF eats up a lot
and can trigger a crash if it runs out.

Also, you don't mention how you're doing it -- printing to the PDF logical
printer or trying to use SaveAs... which I think isn't as good as printing
to the Acrobat printer.

Yes, the hotfix works and doesn't seem to break anything, so it certainly
wouldn't hurt to roll it on.

2009-11-10 Thread Jerry Kindall
Hi all,

Regarding the inadvertent global search and replace issue in FrameMaker 9's
Find/Change dialog recently discussed on this mailing list, I have put together
an AutoHotKey script that forces the Find field to be selected when you press
Control-F, so that you end up typing where you expected to be typing.

If you have been bitten by the new Find behavior and would like to test this
tool, please drop me an e-mail and I'll send you a copy. (I will eventually
post it for download on my Web site, but would like a few more people try it
out first.)

PS -- AutoHotKey is a free scripting tool that lets you drive the UIs of
applications, among many other things. Scripts can be compiled into EXEs,
which is what I have done. See http://www.autohotkey.com/ for details.

RE: FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-10 Thread Ed.
I've been having this problem for years in FM 7.2. My solution seemed to be
removing from my templates a corrupt Myriad Pro family of fonts. It pains
me, because I absolutely love this typeface, and have pretty much made it
mine.

It took me several tries and search-and-replacing in MIF files to completely
eradicate it, but it seems like it's working. I switched to Helvetica Neue
Pro, which is much less beautiful a face than Myriad, but I can live with
it.

One of a million possible scenarios, I'm sure.

Hope this helps,

The FrameUsers list doesn't seem like a very appropriate forum for your
query since none of the tools involved is FrameMaker. If you get a useful
answer, it will only be by coincidence. You'd probably be a lot more
successful asking on the Techwr-l or HATT lists, since there are a lot more
help authors/developers on those lists.

That's what NDoc3 does -- it creates a CHM (or MSDN-style web pages) of
class library documentation for .NET projects. Have you checked out the
NDoc3 pages at SourceForge?

Here's the support page:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndoc3/support

But I warn you: open source software people don't look kindly on someone
who simply asks others to provide "the exact steps," without evidence of
putting any effort into learning. It's better to request help in the
form of "I read X and Y, and tried to follow the procedure in Z, but got
stuck when the widget wouldn't initialize. How do I de-frambulate the
widget to initialize it?"

Oh, and this mailing list is for FrameMaker users discussing FrameMaker
issues. Your query doesn't seem to have anything to do with that at all.

creating oversize PDFs

2009-11-10 Thread Fred Wersan
I am trying to create a PDF file from a FrameMaker document that is
approximately 18x36" format.

Reduce the Adobe PS driver resolution to 1200 or 600 dpi, then try again.

[ Also, if you haven't done it already, I recommend applying the Adobe PS

Though this resolves some issues with memory management here and there this
approach unfortunately also introduces problems, one of which is bad
character spacing.

Reducing from 1200 dpi to 600 dpi may not cause serious havoc, but if you
reduce resolution any further you'll have very visible artifacts at smaller
font sizes (at least in some cases).

2009-11-10 Thread qui...@airmail.net
To be truthful, the best ways to import a Word doc or export a word doc
has been through the Japanese RTF filter, and by using MIF2Go.

Upgrading to FM 9.0 and Word filters

I'm not sure whether the FM9 Word filter is different than the FM9 filter.
In any case, in my recent Word->FM conversions projects I analyzed
the results of both FM8 and FM9 filters, and found out that using the
FM7.2 filter produced better results. So even though the client required
FM8 files, I imported through FM7.2 and then opened the FM files in FM8.

If you like to use keyboard shortcuts for tag assignment: unfortunately,
these do not work consistently in FM9 (even with all patches applied).
[eg F9 or Ctrl-9 for paragraph tags;  F8 or Ctrl-8 for character tags;

When Saving as PDF, "Convert CMYK Colors to RGB" should be
turned ON (which restores the state available with previous FM
versions), or else various problems may be encountered (including
font changes in the PDF, e.g. Arial Narrow showing as Times New Roman).

If you identify some "compelling reasons to upgrade to 9.0" that apply
to you needs, probably the best next step is to install FM9 for a trial of
one month and evaluate its new interface and features while working
on a typical project.

I am new to the FrameMaker world, so I have only worked in FM9.

If all of my documents were created solely in FM9, do I need to worry about
turning ON "Convert CMYK Colors to RGB" when I save to PDF?

FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-10 Thread Art Campbell
How much RAM and free disk space do you have? Creating the PDF eats up a lot
and can trigger a crash if it runs out.

Also, you don't mention how you're doing it -- printing to the PDF logical
printer or trying to use SaveAs... which I think isn't as good as printing
to the Acrobat printer.

Yes, the hotfix works and doesn't seem to break anything, so it certainly
wouldn't hurt to roll it on.

Beware the Inadvertent Global Search and Replace

2009-11-10 Thread Jerry Kindall
Hi all,

Regarding the "inadvertent global search and replace" issue in FrameMaker 9's

Turning ON "Convert CMYK Colors to RGB" is recommended in FM9 when saving
as PDF, regardless of whether the content was authored in FM9 or in
previous FM versions.

FM crashing upon attempt to create PDF - 3Qs

2009-11-10 Thread Ed.
I've been having this problem for years in FM 7.2. My solution seemed to be
removing from my templates a corrupt Myriad Pro family of fonts. It pains
me, because I absolutely love this typeface, and have pretty much made it
"mine".

It took me several tries and search-and-replacing in MIF files to completely
eradicate it, but it seems like it's working. I switched to Helvetica Neue
Pro, which is much less beautiful a face than Myriad, but I can live with
it.

One of a million possible scenarios, I'm sure.

Hope this helps,
-=Ed.
