Frame 9 trial
Hi Framers, I am trying to install a trial of Framemaker to see if it suitable for a big directory publishing job which my client is trying to do (without much success) in InDesign. I downloaded a huge file (took all afternoon) and then when I tried to run it got a message that I had to install 7zip (which I thought I already had). Anyway I downloaded and (re)installed 7zip. But now I can't find the file to install. I know I downloaded it into my Downloads folder but I don't see anything likely in there. I went back to the Adobe site to do it again and when I started the download it said that all the files were already there (in the Downloads folder). Can anybody offer any clues as to what the file is called? Thanks! PB -- CatBase: The Database Publishing Solution CatBase Software Ltd. Mentioning open source softwares
At 12:41 AM 28/11/2009, mathieu jacquet wrote: >Dear all, > >is there any "rule" about how to mention open source software in technical >documentation? "Open source" means that the source code of the software is available to anyone under a licence. Its terms and restrictions apply to the usage of the *source code* of that software (compiling it into your own software products), not to the usage of binaries. If you have used an open source toolkit to develop the documentation then it is good manners to include a colophon acknowledging that usage and providing a URL to the main page of the project. It is not a legal requirement. >The software I am currently documenting (MashUp Composer) requires from users >that they run a database creation script. As above. However, since MySQL is now owned by one of the proprietary software "heavies", you should read the licences of those applications to find out whether Oracle has any legal requirement regarding the use of the *trademark* in documentary references. >Can I say, for example: Launch your favorite DB administration tool (for >example MySQL Administrator). > >Am I supposed to add copyright mentions for open source software? Don't confuse copyright (which affects the re-use of *written* content and is statutory and governed by international treaties) with trademark usage rules, nor with licence requirements (which are unilateral rules stated by the vendor of the software, to which you agree when installing or compiling that software). -- If you are re-quoting written content from MySQL manuals in your works then you must, under copyright law, acknowledge the source, just as you must do with regard to any other publication from which you lift content. Whether you do this using footnotes or a References section (or a combination of both) is up to you. -- If you are quoting the name of a product in your documentation then you *might* be required to tag the name with the "registered trademark" symbol (the letter R in a circle, usually superscribed) or the "trademark applied for" symbol (the letters TM in upper case, usually superscribed). If nothing is mentioned to this effect in your licence agreement then don't include them. Helen

Ctrl key issues
hi Corinne, do you happen to have alternate keyboard layouts configured on your system, other than the basic English (United States)? I have a few and I found that the one I use most often ? a customized version of the French (Canada) layout that includes Unicode characters (i.e. Esperanto's accented letters) ? interferes with the keyboard shortcuts *in FrameMaker only*. Soon after installing this keyboard layout, I realized I could not use Ctrl+Shift+V in FrameMaker anymore (nothing happens). At first I thought I would have to uninstall this custom layout and do without it, but then it dawned on me that I might as well just switch to English (Canada) by pressing Left Alt + Shift, the first time I need the shortcuts in FM. (I just cannot use FrameMaker to write in Esperanto.) all this to say... could it be that your Ctrl keys stop working as soon as, somehow, you pressed Left Alt + Shift (unknowingly)? Maybe check your Regional Options control panel, the text services configured on your system, and the language bar preferences... See if just pressing Left Alt + Shift once or twice could revive your Ctrl keys... it could also be something else... For instance, when I was using Remote Desktop Connection to acces a computer at work from my home computer, I would always end up losing both the Ctrl keys and the Shift keys at some point. Sometimes, just repeatedly going Left Ctrl, Right Ctrl a few times, and then Left Shift, Right Shift a few more times would revive the lost keys. (Appartently this was a known issue with Remote Desktop, at least at the time.) FWIW Suzanne Corinne Kenney wrote: > Actually, it happens ONLY in Frame. Other apps work fine.
