[Framers] Framemaker 5.5

2017-03-20 Thread David Klein
I am a retired technical writer who cannot afford to upgrade to a later
version.

I have been using Framemaker to write my autobiography on an older computer
running Windows XP. I purchased a newer computer running Windows 7
Professional that has the ability to set up a windows virtual PC. I finally
figured out the way to get it to work over the weekend, and installed
Framemaker 5.5 and my Epson XP-420 printer. I am able to make a file and
print it,

The problem is trying to save the file so that I can integrate it with the
many other files I have saved to a portable drive using my old XP computer.

When I connect this drive to the Windows 7 it is fully recognized as a
separate drive. When I open the files, the titles are shown. Of course,
because the software is not recognized by Windows 7 Professional, the
actual files are not shown.

Here is the problem. When I am in wndows virtual PC and go to save a file
in the portable drive I get the following: \\tsclient\J on Entire Network
with MyBackup in the center. When I attempt to open MyBackup I get a list
of very old programs with a question: Do I want to convert? I feel sure
this is generated by Framemaker 5.5 because of the age of the programs. In
other words it does not recognize Framemaker as an option.

It seems I have no option to save a file generated within windows virtual
PC to an external device. If there is a way, I would like to hear it.
Thanks.

Re: [Framers] Font size in marker windows, in FM2017

2017-03-20 Thread Bernard Aschwanden (Publishing Smarter)
I actively drag and drop my FM2017 between 2 monitors. One is a large
screen, but at 1280/720 resolution. The other is a smaller screen, but at
3000/2000. I can see things like the paragraph designer actually be at
"50/50" when I am between screens. Part is 'larger' and the other 'smaller'.
As soon as I drop the designer in one or the other it's "right". I can't
define it too clearly, but my 2 cents... Download the trial and see if it
work. I'm on my glasses for reading on the computer, and for the rest of the
world when I step away, but it does what I expect it to do. My expectations
and any other users may vary, but I'm happy with the dual monitor world,
dual resolutions, and with FM objects on one screen or the other.

When Adobe released FM2017, they claimed to have finally made it compatible
with high-density screens, but I noticed that their screen grabs did not
include any demonstration of this. Since I suspected that they were merely
lying again, I contacted a sales rep and promised that I would upgrade
*immediately* to FM2017, *paying whatever price*, if only they would
provide me with a screen grab that demonstrated that they were at long last
telling the truth -- that their newest release was indeed compatible with
high-density screens. When the sales rep was (predictably) nonresponsive, I
presumed that this meant that they were lying again. -- Now I see, from this
thread, that unfortunately this was an accurate assessment.

Please pardon me for anger at their disrespect of their customer base --
after passing through every release of FrameMaker since long before Adobe
acquired it, I am 79 now, and my eyes have become my severe limiting
condition.

Re: [Framers] Font size in marker windows, in FM2017

2017-03-20 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Austin,

compatibility with high-dpi screens is one of the major changes in the 2017
release. FrameMaker fully supports high-dpi screens up to 4k (3840 x 2160).
This can also be found on our official product pages:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/features.html
Please also see our video about it:
https://video.tv.adobe.com/v/16936/
(Although it's "only" in Full HD, not 4k).

FrameMaker 2017 recognizes your screen resolution and Windows display scaling
and adopts automatically the UI scaling based on your Windows environment even
for multi-monitor environments with different resolutions / dpi ("Per-Monitor
DPI-aware" in Microsoft terminology).

Unfortunately this list does not allow embedding screenshots or attachments.
But I will be happy to send you a screenshot taken on a 4k monitor by e-mail if
you allow me to do so.

Also, would you mind telling me the name of the sales rep that you were talking
to? I would like to catch up with him/her.

Re: [Framers] PDFs in a FM book file

2017-03-20 Thread Lin Sims
Dave,

If you want to create forms and other things in Frame for output to PDF,
check out Shlomo Perets' Microtypes website. His TimeSavers tools insert
postscript code into Frame files to do things like create dynamic forms.

Re: [Framers] PDFs in a FM book file

2017-03-20 Thread David Artman
You can use Acrobat Pro to append a PDF file to another PDF file, in
whole or in part, and (IIRC) at any location using Document > Insert
   Pages.

Yes, this adds a step (or more!) to workflow. Yes, the inserted PDF
will have its own footers, etc; and thus, you might have to do some
fancy footwork with page numbering in the two source files to get it
all to align. Yes, any other autonumbering will be similarly
problematic, requiring you to force it to start with a specific value
(e.g., n=25). But you'll have a PDF "in" another PDF.

As for "is [it] recommended", I think it's a good practice if you get
content from a business partner, legal, or some other entity that would
not want you to have any chance of editing it. (Hmm... but such a
locked-down PDF might not be appendable, in part or in whole, to
another one? And you can always use Advanced Text Tools on unlocked
PDFs, so maybe this use case ISN'T a good one! You'd probably have to
insert into FrameMaker as full-page "images" if locked down.)

OK, another use case is a PDF created in another editor, for example a
dynamic form made in LiveCycle Designer. VERY hard to do such things in
FrameMaker, but easy in LCD. I've never tried that workflow, but it
   seems kosher.

Finally, you could have an 'example' PDF that is a sample of output
resulting from a process that is documented in the earlier PDF. That
would avoid you having to setup several master pages in the same book
to show the variations. OR, if you are, say, making a training manual
for using your publishing environment, and you want to show a sample of
all the output types, but Help won't append: make the Help output save
as PDF and then append tot he "how to" main PDF:

   * How To Run Output (1 PDF with 'internal style')

** PDF Output Example (1 PDF of single-sourced sample book with
   'external style')

** Help Output Example (1 PDF of single-sourced sample book rendered as
   Help then exported/saved as PDF)

   ** (etc.)

So, sure! It's recommended in cases where sourcing everything in
FrameMaker is impossible, too time consuming, or a poor content-reuse
   scenario. Hope this helps;

   David

Re: [Framers] FM 2017 Feature Request: Restore color and scaling to menu icons

2017-03-20 Thread Stefan Gentz
Dear Alison,

I'm so sorry, if you felt that my original mail was offensive to you. That's
not at all what I wanted! When I was writing about a "young and fresh team full
of energy" I did not in any way wanted to imply anything negative about older
people. Not at all!

Let me explain where I was coming from, please: I know the product and all
these complaints since 20 years - 19 years before I started at Adobe. And I did
the same complaints than many other here. And why did I do this? Because I made
the same experiences and got frustrated from time to time as well. And you know
what? Personally I think it was very valid to criticize a lot of things and it
was often very legitimate.

But things have changed. The Adobe TechComm team that I know today has a very
customer focused, open and listening attitude. We want your feedback, we want
your bug reports and we want to fix them. We even go out and actively "hunt for
bugs" in forums and with customers, and we want to improve the product, and we
want to and we do solve old, long outstanding bugs and problems. This is true
for the support team, true for the engineering team and true for all other of
my colleagues in the Adobe TechComm team.

And yes, I do think it's sometimes good to let history be history. That does
not mean forgetting and that does not mean ignoring history. Yes, I absolutely
agree with you that we do need to learn from history to make the future better.
And, believe me – as a German I grew up with that attitude my whole life. It's
so to say deep in my DNA. But sometimes it's also good to accept that things
change: Life, business, colleagues, friends etc. – and then move forward, focus
on the future, take a new look at things, realistically review the status quo
and compare it with the past. And sometimes it's also a good idea to accept
that people, products and companies can and do change their attitudes and are
doing better.

By the way, Adobe is one of the best employers worldwide, and gets the best
rankings from their employees year after year, and Adobe is treating their
employees very well in many aspects and has a great culture of diversity,
equality, respect and creativity. I'm not aware of anyone in my team who what
not sign that immediately. And maybe that's why we are "fresh and with a lot of
energy". Young is relative (I'm 41 "only"? "already"?). And maybe it's more
about staying "young" in the mind and an attitude. So yes, we are a "young"
team, with many fresh and good ideas, full of innovation, energized to solve
old problems and come up with great new solutions.
There are of course people in the team who are in the team for many years. But
for a product that has a 30 years history, it's normal in the IT world that
teams change. People join and leave over the years. That has nothing to do with
"bad treatment" or anything negative you might want to want to imply. It's just
normal life.

That said, sorry, if you felt that my original mail was offensive to you.
That's not at all what I wanted.
So, and now I will open a ticket in our system for implementing something that
Rick Quatro had send me earlier today. Another of those "old" (may I?), long
pending request :-)

Regards,
Stefan Gentz

I’m sorry but this is offensive to me on so many levels – possibly others as
well. And it’s indicative of too many players in the software world these days.
>> And? History is history! More or less no one from the old FrameMaker days is
>> in the FrameMaker team today. Product Managers, engineers, QA, etc. – the

History isn’t just history. Remember "those who do not learn history are doomed
to repeat it" which means you make the same mistakes over and over. Sound
familiar when taken in context with some of the comments in this thread?
It’s not an accomplishment to say “More or less no one from the old FrameMaker
days is in the FrameMaker team today”. That’s a sad commentary on the way Adobe
(among others) does business and how it treats its employees.
And “young and fresh…with a lot of energy” in this context is nothing to brag
about. It implies that older, experienced personnel just drag down the team..
“Tried and true” can be better for *good* reason. I’ve personally seen “young
and fresh” team members push for something that’s long since been rejected by
users as the opposite of what’s actually needed or even worse, completely
useless. But hey, it’s cute and/or trendy! And isn’t that what counts?

Re: [Framers] using variables

2017-03-20 Thread Peter Gold
I'm just working from personal memory, so this could just be wishful
thinking.

It might be possible to create the behavior by using a dedicated run-in
autonumbered paragraph format, in combination with a cross-reference, in
the table title or in a heading or footing row to emulate the current table
sheet number, and the last table sheet number.

I'm thinking that this somewhat like the technique of capturing the last
page number of the last page in a book of separate files, by using a
cross-reference to overcome the limitation of the $lastpagenum variable
only working within the current document.

I seem to recall, but I could be wrong, that table headers/footers may have
a property to not appear on the first page of the table. If so, this could
be useful.

I'm not sure if an autonumbered paragraph in a table header/footer
increments on pages after the first page.

If the entire document consists only of pages that display the table, other
auto-numbering and cross-reference strategies, and dedicated master-page
designs, may be possible.

Re: [Framers] using variables

2017-03-20 Thread Scott Prentice
Yes .. by definition, a single variable in a single file cannot have
more than one value based on its location in the document (unless it's a
special variable like $curpagenum). However, you could create a script
or plugin that could process a file to create different variables or
strings from one variable that would have differing values in different
areas of that document.

after the table number inside of the title. Variable Table Sheet (Sheet

the variable on the title I can only insert it on the first page, which
prevents me from using two different variables.

I'm not sure how to create a variable to output one value on the first
page then something different on subsequent pages. We have a table
continued attribute that is inserted on the table title but does not
display until after the first page. I'm not sure how that works, but it is
similar to what I need to in this case. Any assistance will be greatly

But there does seem to be a difference in the font tracking/kerning - and it's
much more readable in the 2015 version.

OK, this makes more sense. If you have a 4K screen, then you will definitely
see a difference between 2015 and 2017. But the way I read Dave's original
post, this isn't the issue he is referring to. He considers the text in the
2015 Marker pod to be too small and it's not because he is using a 4K
monitor. On other non-high resolution monitors, he will see no size
difference between 2015 and 2017.

Here's a comparison of Marker dialogs in FM2015 and FM2017 at default size

this and similar dialogs is increased by 4x in FM2017.

As an example, one only has to look at the kludge that Microsoft made of Word.
It is not as easy to do perform certain function or to access features. New and

Hi Peter,

my history with FrameMaker might be short and small compared to yours (I have
only about 20 years of FrameMaker history on my shoulders, only something like
+50,000 hours of working with FM, and only several million pages processed for
all kind of companies from very small to super big in only up to 60 languages
in both unstructured and structured FrameMaker). But I know many of the fights
you fought as well and understand very well where you are coming from.

I remember very well the time when I modified the fmdlg.dll in the late 90ies
and early two thousands to make several dialogs bigger (especially the xref
dialog). Or how I hacked the FrameMaker.exe to output unmodified bookmarks code
into ps and created fmroman to Unicode mapping tables, and hooked them into
distillers epilog.ps. Or my scripts to do regex-based find & replace in MIF
source code because the find & replace in FrameMaker was, let’s say: very
basic. And I remember very well my yearlong fights for Unicode in FrameMaker
and later on my yearlong fights for Right-To-Left support. I have fought
countless fights with Adobe for about 20 years, before I finally joined them.
So, tell me something, Peter …

And? History is history! More or less no one from the old FrameMaker days is in
the FrameMaker team today. Product Managers, engineers, QA, etc. – the whole
team is pretty young and fresh. And with a lot of energy. And in the last two
years only they have tackled hundreds and hundreds of long and outstanding
community wishes and requirements and many old bugs. Over the last 20 years a
lot of them had accumulated. And in the last 2 years only, a big bunch of them
were fixed and delivered. There are still some left and we are already working
on them. With the soon to come Update 1 for FrameMaker we will fix and deliver
on the next bunch of some long-time requests and bugs.

Adobe pushed FM development in the last 2 years heavily. The release cycles
become much shorter and every three months a bigger update with new
enhancements and bug fixes is rolled out. Our list of community wished is
getting shorter every day and we have already started on tackling several other
bigger areas of improvement.

Maybe it’s time, Peter, to adjust your negative picture that you have built
over the last 20, 30 years.

I think that the big changes are only apparent for those with high-res
screens. Would be interesting to see a side-by-side from someone with a
4k. Perhaps that's what Stefan's screenshots came from.

Since both pods/panels/dialogs are resizable, I've made them both as small

Perhaps the text size or font changes with screen size or resolution?

The marker window has changed in FM 2017 and is no in the same look and feel
like other pods. Also the font size is the same as in the text field of all
other dialogs:

[cid:image025.jpg@01D2A0BE.831E09E0]

In FrameMaker 2015 there was a different marker pod based on a different
technology.

@all: Please give me feedback, on what is different in the index marker
window for you that does make it more difficult to work with text in index
markers compared with other markers or text in other dialogs / pods.

[Framers] using variables

2017-03-20 Thread Barlow, Patrick N
I have a document that contains a table that spans 264 pages. We need to number
each page with a sheet number. Table 1 (Sheet 1 of 264) on the first page and
each subsequent page will just contain the sheet number. Table 1 (sheet 2) and
so on. I'm trying to use a variable that can be inserted after the table number
inside of the title. Variable Table Sheet (Sheet <$tblsheetnum> of
<$tblsheetcount>) will be the first page, second and subsequent pages will use
(Sheet <$tblsheetnum>). Since I have to insert the variable on the title I can
only insert it on the first page, which prevents me from using two different
variables.

I'm not sure how to create a variable to output one value on the first page
then something different on subsequent pages. We have a table continued
attribute that is inserted on the table title but does not display until after
the first page. I'm not sure how that works, but it is similar to what I need
to in this case. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Framers] Font Size in Index Marker Pod (FRMAKER-2451)

2017-03-20 Thread Rick Quatro
Here is how it looks on my 22" monitor. The 2015 pod is on the left and the
2017 pod is on the right. The 2017 pod is bigger but the text is not.

No, what I said is, that we have changed the index marker pod in FM 2017. It
is NOT the same as the one in FM 2015.

The font size is the same now as in all other dialogs where you have
editable text. It's not the same small size as in FM 2015 anymore.

IXgen is a very useful plugin for marker-intensive documents. I used it

that it takes the liberty of balancing square brackets when it puts the text
back into the markers. This was a fatal problem for one of my clients that
was trying to use IXgen with TimeSavers markers which sometimes use
unbalanced open square brackets in its marker syntax (essentially,
Postscript code). In my view, IXgen shouldn't make any changes to the marker
text that you don't explicitly specify. But this is certainly an edge case,
so if you are not using TimeSavers markers, this won't be a concern for you.

**IXGEN HAS BEEN UPDATED**

We've now included a "passthrough" marker-type option for such cases.
(In many other situations, you do want -- and need -- brackets
balanced.)

Hope that helps,

Hi

In the last days there was some discussion about them index marker
text window.

Another idea would be to use IXgen and bypass the limits (and sometimes
miseries) of the marker window entirely.

Most marker display and edit entities generated by IXgen rely on FrameMaker
documents that we provide as templates. And, because the IXgen templates are
plain old FM documents, you can modify those templates to use whatever font
size and styles you'd like.

For more information about IXgen please visit our site (in the sig block
below).

Stefan -

Thanks for this update.  Unfortunately, I have no idea whether (and if so,
when) I will get FrameMaker 2017 Release.  I guess that the change you
reported is something I'll just have to look forward to.

Subject: [Framers] Font Size in Index Marker Pod (FRMAKER-2451)

Hi

In the last days there was some discussion about them index marker text
window.

David Stamm had file this in as an enhancement request:
https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/FRMAKER-2451

The marker window has changed in FM 2017 and is no in the same look and feel
like other pods. Also the font size is the same as in the text field of all
other dialogs:

[cid:image025.jpg@01D2A0BE.831E09E0]

In FrameMaker 2015 there was a different marker pod based on a different
technology.

@all: Please give me feedback, on what is different in the index marker
window for you that does make it more difficult to work with text in index
markers compared with other markers or text in other dialogs / pods.

Re: [Framers] Font Size in Index Marker Pod (FRMAKER-2451)

2017-03-20 Thread Rick Quatro
IXgen is a very useful plugin for marker-intensive documents. I used it
years ago and recommended it to several of my clients. My only complaint is
that it takes the liberty of balancing square brackets when it puts the text
back into the markers.

For more information about IXgen please visit our site (in the sig block
below).
