Re: [Framers] Authoring and distributing a manual for US and non-US customers

2019-11-08 Thread Catherine Woods
It's been some time since I created documents for translation, but
generally remember:

   - Stick to deadlines for English source documents and don't allow anyone
to talk you into changing them
   - Some languages take longer to translate and are more expensive (i.e.,
   Chinese)
   - Some languages have options like European or Central and South
American (CALA) Spanish and Portuguese, Traditional and Simplified Chinese,
European or Canadian French. Try to pick just one.
   - Will you be tasked with finding in-country reviewers for the
translations? This ended up being a big issue for me.
   - ezGlobe was the last company I worked with and was superior in all
areas. Smoothed the whole process for me more than once.
   - Ask for RFP based a test document from at least 5 translation
   companies before choosing a finalist.
   - Realize that you're getting into a big job almost the size of the
   document creation and maintenance themselves.
   - Are you using a content management system to create the document? It
   will make your job easier.

Even though it sounds like I didn't like this aspects of the job, it opened
my eyes to many areas I'd never that of before. I can now tell the
differences between Traditional and Simplified Chinese and Korean, Spanish
and Portuguese, and some Scandinavian languages.

Re: [Framers] What causes documentation to fail

2016-05-20 Thread Catherine Woods
Documentation creep - like every 4 months project management "thinks" up
another document (or decides that original docs should be split into x) and
expects the one assigned writer to pick it up
Buy-in from project management on the documentation to be written that
"don't change over time"
Mysterious end-customer requirements - an end-customer that can dictate the
documentation

I speak from experience on documentation failure.

Hi Framers,

A while ago I had weeks of woes with mega-crashes while trying to print to
PDF from Frame books. Eventually, the cure was to apply the hotfix that lots
of people mentioned (I say eventually, because I couldn't download it for
ages, and assumed it would never work for me).

Well, everything's been fine for a couple of months, then Adobe updated
Acrobat, which I assume stiffed the Distiller or something, because I
started getting crashes again while building PDFs from FM book files.

For example:

%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[Page: 1]%%
%%[Page: 2]%%
%%[Page: 3]%%
%%[Page: 4]%%
%%[Page: 5]%%
%%[Page: 6]%%
%%[Page: 7]%%
%%[Page: 8]%%
%%[Page: 9]%%
%%[Page: 10]%%
%%[Page: 11]%%
%%[Page: 12]%%
%%[Page: 13]%%
%%[ Error: ioerror; OffendingCommand: imageDistiller ]%%

Stack:
-dict-
-mark-
-save-

%%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
%%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%

Naturally, this happened while I was up against a deadline, but I thought
Hmmm, I wonder if I apply the hotfix again, it will cure things...

Yes. Joy!

The page to look at for info on the hotfix is:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=952909

Read the bumf then click the View and request hotfix downloads link near the
top of the page (you need to do this, as you eventually get an email with
the right link and a password).

It took me ages to get the correct link/hotfix for some reason.

Hope this helps someone.

RE: Marketing a product: which language for the documentation

2008-05-21 Thread Catherine Woods
Other questions might be: does your client want all of translations in one
document?

Speaking from some translation experience: you also need to decide what
flavours of languages you want? If the product will be sold in Central and
Latin America as well as Europe, you may want to try International versions
as opposed to localized.

Can you change the language that appears on the UI on the GPS product ?
You'll probably want to sync up the languages on the UI with the docs.

Hi to all,

here is a question from a client: he's just developed a new GPS-based
product in France, has a getting started and user manual written (I'm
currently working on it) in French and would like to know if he is supposed
to have them translated...

I answered yes, you have to have them translated into the languages of
countries where you want the product marketted. But I am not 100% sure of
the answer.

The other question is: does the client have to have both manuals translated?

Do you have any idea of official (governmental) documents about this kind of
issue (Europe and/or US)?

Thank a lot!

RE: MadCap Blaze

I haven't even installed Blaze yet! But I will anyway even though nothing I
heard so far is good.

I'm interested in this CMS that you mentioned. I'm not using structure yet
(haven't found a good enough reason). But writing in topics is becoming a
real management nightmare in FrameMaker.

Sharon Burton, from MadCap, did a presentation at our last STC meeting. She
said that Blaze was for people who only did print publishing and Flare was
for print and help files etc.

Both Blaze and Flare make you write in a topic-oriented way, yet it doesn't
do DITA. Sharon talked about all of the advantages of doing topic-oriented
writing.

I asked her why MadCap would make a product that doesn't do DITA when they
are trying to compete with Frame. I said that right now, with Frame 8, all I
had to do was flip it to structured and I had DITA, so moving to Blaze or
Flare was a step backward. She didn't really have an answer for me on that.

She said that Madcap was creating a CMS first, and then it was going to make
Blaze and Flare DITA compatible. I told her that in my opinion, that was a
bad plan. They will never be competitive with Frame until they do DITA, and
no one is going to buy a CMS when they can get Subversion and CVS for free
so they would be better off doing DITA now and the CMS later.

I don't know if she passed on what I said to the MadCap people but we'll
see.

They must have something up their sleeve... or why did they once
position Blaze as FrameMaker killer? You wouldn't expect a serious
company to exaggerate things like that, would you? Maybe I forgot,
that in marketing everything is allowed...

Well, FrameMaker is still listed two times on the Blaze website: As
possible import format and as output format (which would only be
necessary if the products own print layout capabilities are somewhat
limited).

BTW, I am hesitant to install .NET 3.0 and enjoy your reports!

RE: Cannot launch distiller to create PDF file

2007-06-15 Thread Catherine Woods
I have this problem but in my case it's consistent.

After I've rebooted my computer, the first time I try to create a PDF from a
file or book it doesn't work. If I immediately use save as again, it's
fine.

If in fact it works sometimes but not others, the problem
has nothing to do with having multiple distillers on your
system. If you installed the standalone version of Distiller
that came with FrameMaker, it would be available to uninstall
from the Add/Remove programs control panel.

I would suggest that for reliability, you print to the
Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance in lieu of
using the save as PDF feature. Please advise if that works
consistently.

I am having a problem trying to save Frame documents as PDF
files using the File-save as command. It seems to work
haphazardly - sometimes, a PDF is generated with no problem,
other times Frame keeps trying for quite a while (almost
appearing as if the program crashed, using 100% of the CPU),
eventually giving up after several minutes with the error
message Cannot launch Acrobat Distiller to create PDF file.
There does not seem to be any discernible pattern to suggest
to me why it might be failing.

I am running Framemaker 7.2p158 and Distiller 8.0 on Windows
 XP Professional.

It has been suggested to me that this might be a result of
having multiple copies of Distiller installed on the system,
but I'm not sure how I would check that (Distiller doesn't
show up in Add/remove programs on it's own).

 Any ideas?

 Thanks in advance,

RE: Commenting in PDF files from Acrobat 6.0

2006-04-17 Thread Catherine Woods
She needs to use Acrobat 7 Pro if she wants to get the full advantage of the
commenting feature.

It's a great feature with very few problems (for its first release). I'd
recommend it to anyone who is tired of getting comments back in varied
formats. The auto online help feature is great as well.

Hi all,

One of my colleagues created a PDF of her document and is passing it
around to reviewers for comment. Trouble is, the reviewers can't add
comments and she doesn't know why. This is the first time she's done it
and doesn't know whether it's her security settings, preferences, or
version of the software. She is using the full version of Acrobat 6.0.
Does 6.0 allow recipients to comment or does she have to upgrade to
Acrobat 7.0 or 7.0 Pro? I have 7.0 Pro on my machine and haven't had any
problems.

Thanks...Jon

Versioning software

2006-04-05 Thread Catherine Woods
We used to use SourceSafe and CVS. They were okay. Then the company changed
to Perforce, which I found so much easier to use and was a lot more
user-friendly.

Hi, Kevin -

We do use SourceSafe, not only for the fm files, but all the project and
related files as well. It does have it's quirks, but seems to work well
for us.
