Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 138, Issue 8
I've found the URLs in a Word doc often don't work when the doc is PDF'd. What I do is Share the Word doc, select "Email", then "Send as PDF". This starts a new email message with the PDF'd Word doc attached. Then just copy the PDF and paste it to the desired folder. But I admit that I've never tried it with PDFs as the target in the URL. To see the underlying URL for a Word hyperlink, it should just be a matter of toggling the field to view the field code (the URL string plus a little bit of code enclosing it) rather than the result (the link string displayed in the document). Word lets you do this globally (for *all* fields in the doc, which means x-refs, TOC fields, index fields, and all sorts of other stuff) or for the field where the insertion point is. The keyboard shortcut for the view toggle is Shift+F9, and to go global you just do a Select All beforehand. That should give you the kind of global update capability you're seeking. -FR From: Framers <framers-bounces+docudoc=hotmail@lists.frameusers.com> on behalf of Rick Quatro <r...@rickquatro.com> Sent: Friday, September 22, 2017 3:12 PM To: 'An email list for people using Adobe FrameMaker software.' Subject: [Framers] OT: Word links to URLs Hi Framers, I have a Word project where I have references to other documents. The text in Word has the title, but I want to create a link to the document's URL on a web page. Here are my questions: 1) When I put the links in Word, will they work in a resulting PDF? 2) Is there a way to internally (perhaps with VBA) see the Word text and the corresponding link URL? Some of the URLs are changing and it would be useful to be able to batch search on a title and replace the link's old URL with the new one. [Framers] Hyphenation puzzle
Hello everyone. I'm having trouble figuring out this hyphenation issue. I have a word (e-file) that should never be broken between lines. I've tried following the help with no luck. [Framers] Can Frame 15 be used so I can eliminate ePublisher?
I'm currently on a Windows 7 machine using Frame 7.2 and ePublisher 2012.4. My Windows 10 machine should arrive any day. What I'm wondering is can I get Frame 15 to do the same work that ePub does and I therefore won't need to upgrade my ePub but instead get rid of it. What I need Frame 15 to be able to do is: 1.Generate CHM files (I know Frame 15 does this) 2.Use conditions (e.g. PDF_Only) so screenshots can be selected to be excluded from the CHM output but included in the PDF output 3.Write my content using one font (e.g. Times) and have a different font (e.g. Arial) used when the CHM file is generated 4.Use a cross-reference format that includes page numbers for the PDF output but removes the page numbers for the CHM output Thank you in advance for your help. Generating web-based help
Up to this point, I've never generated web-based help, only Microsoft HTML Help 1.x with Framemaker 7.2 as my source documents. The program that my help is used in is now being used as part of a suite of web-based programs. When I view the CHM file in the web-based application, I only see the books, chapters, and headings on the left side. I don't see any of the actual Help content. That very same CHM file shows all as it should when the application is on my C: drive. My questions are: 1.Is there a setting I need to generate the help for the web-based application? 2.If I need to change the output, what output do I need to select that would require the absolute bare minimum of work on my part? 3.If I choose a different output, do the style and paragraph settings that are part of the HTML Help 1.x output automatically come into the new output type? Thank you so much for your help in advance. David Millis Drake Software ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to framers@lists.frameusers.com. TopicAlias Restrictions
Hello Framers. I'm starting a new, and large, project using Frame 7.2. I will be using WebWorks to generate a CHM file once the manual has been completed. It looks like there will be MANY topic IDs used in this project and I'm thinking of using Topic IDs that are alphanumeric. I've used strictly numeric Topic IDs in the past. My questions are: 1) Can I use a combination of letters and numbers in my Topic IDs? 2) Is there a length limitation in Frame 7.2 for Topic IDs? I'm thinking of using 8-10 characters, 12 at the very most. Thank you in advance for input. David Millis ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. 7.2 to 11 Upgrade and reference pages
I recently upgraded from Frame 7.2 to 11 and have found that some of my reference page elements didn't make the transition very well. I have 2-column, 1-row tables with Note, Important, or Warning in the first cell. These labels are non-anchored frames in the reference page and appeared just fine in Frame 7.2 body pages. In Frame 11, these labels are cut off so that when I insert one of these tables into the body, the Note label displays No, Important displays Import, and Warning displays Warn. My question is 2-part: First, how do I adjust these unanchored frames in the Reference page so that when I insert a new one of these tables, the full word displays in the first cell? My second question is: Is there a way to fix all of the existing tables globally that are already in the document so I don't have to manually stretch the first cell on every occurrence of these tables in each of my projects? TOC has incorrect page numbers
Hello FFs (Fellow Framers). This morning I discovered that the page numbering that is showing in my TOC is incorrect. The numbers are correct for a couple of chapters and at the beginning of the 3rd chapter. Then, in the middle of the 3rd chapter, the numbers are off by a page (should be 32 and is showing 31 in the TOC). I'm only using Headings 1 and 2 in the TOC and it's a Heading 1 where it starts to go south. This is unstructured Frame 7.2 on a Windows 7 machine. Can someone give me some ideas as to what to look for? I would have an idea if the numbering was wrong starting at the beginning of a chapter, just not starting mid-chapter. Because the book is divided into parts, the generation process uses a template for each divider file. It is this template file that I was tweaking. When it works, it creates separate book components for the dividers as well as the chapters. I do now have a working set, but only because I have taken my tweaks so far. Having saved each good tweak into a new file, I can quickly revert to a good copy when an extra tweak breaks things. Life on the edge! I know that if I make the slightest modification to the text frame on a master page in that particular template file, it will crash FM when I generate from the map using DITA-FMx (always). Or sometimes when I make the tweak, save the file, and close it. It is this last factor that makes we wonder whether it is a native FM problem or a DITA-FMx probem - or if somehow my file becomes corrupted at some point in the generation process. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to make this easier and less labor intensive? Thank you, David Millis
TOC Master Page won't apply to TOC
I'm sure I created this problem trying to solve another but... When I apply my TOC left and right master pages to the TOC, the layout of the page doesn't change. It retains the look of my normal Body master page. I'm applying my TOC master page while in Body Pages view and I'm going to Format Page Layout Master Page Usage. I select Custom, then my TOCRight master page. I then select all pages of the TOC, Odd, then Apply. Shouldn't the look of the page change at that point? Rebuilding the book at this point (applying or not applying master pages) doesn't seem to make any difference. Thanks in advance for your help. This is driving me crazy (and that's not a far trip). Changing templates - converting paragraph tags
I am changing to a new template with totally different master pages, paragraph tags, etc. I was hoping to do a find and replace to change my book to use the new paragraph styles. However, in Frame 7.2, I can find a paragraph tag but the replace options only include to change to Text, change the character format, or by pasting. I know I can redefine my existing paragraph tags to match something in the new template but then the tag names won't match those in the new template. Does anyone have a suggestion other than changing the paragraph tag for each paragraph in a 300 page book? Thanks for the help in advance.
