RE: FM 7.2 deletes files from disk

2009-11-23 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
Thanks to all who replied online and offline. The problem is now solved.

For the benefit of others who might encounter a similar problem, it might be
worth explaining the solution.

The FM files are stored in a source-control system. For OS compatibility
reasons, I had FrameMaker 7.2 and my local copy of the FM files on a
virtual disk managed by Microsoft Virtual PC. When I moved the files to a
physical disk, the problem disappeared. Likewise, the problem disappeared
when I left the files on the virtual disk and compacted the disk.

It seems possible that the problem was caused by disk corruption. I can't be
sure of this, however. In all other respects, the virtual disk worked fine.
The disk passed diagnostic tests without error.

I have worked in FrameMaker in the virtual environment for approximately two
years with no previous problem. At regular intervals, I defragment the
physical disk and the virtual disk, and I compact the virtual disk.

In any event, I moved my local workspace to the physical disk, and all is
well. FrameMaker remains on the virtual disk.

FM 7.2 deletes files from disk

2009-11-16 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
I am running FM 7.2 on Windows XP Pro, fully patched.

I have a book containing 11 *.fm files. I have edited the book innumerable
times without any problem.

Tonight, all seems well until I run Edit > Update Book. The console then
reports:

"Cannot save one or more files in the book. Open each file on the desktop.
Check the permissions of the file on the disk, and then save the file
manually. Couldn't save: "

When I check in the Windows Explorer, I find that the listed *.fm files have
been deleted from the disk. They are not hidden, and they are not in the
Recycle Bin. They are gone.

The precise *.fm files in the list vary from attempt to attempt.
Approximately four of the files appear more often than the others.

I have rebooted, restored backups, checked read/write permissions, moved the
directory, recreated the *.book file, and removed and restored *.fm files in
the *.book file. Nothing helps.

Naturally, this is occurring just before my deadline.

Any ideas?

Re: question about overrides

2008-07-11 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
The main problem with overrides is that it will make
changes later that will be difficult to find and/or fix.

Is there a way to find overrides, other than examining each paragraph
individually?

Is there a way to remove all overrides from a document in a single
operation? I guess one way is to import to a new document and select the
option to remove format overrides. Is that the best way?

Graphic bug when saving as PDF

2007-11-05 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
Has anyone encountered the following bug? Any solutions?

FrameMaker 7.2
Acrobat Pro 8.1.1
Windows XP Pro SP2

When I save an FM book as a PDF, the first graphic in the book is rendered
as a gray box. When I save the individual *.fm file as a PDF, the same
graphic is rendered normally. If I delete the graphic, the next graphic,
which happens to be in another *.fm file, is rendered as gray box. The FM
and graphic files are otherwise completely normal.

The problem occurred on two computers. It may conceivably be related to a
recent Acrobat 8.1.1 upgrade because I previously generated PDFs from the
same book without difficulty. I was able to save other books as PDF without
a problem.

The work-around that I used was to generate the PDF from both the book and
the *.fm file. In Acrobat, I replaced the page of PDF #1 where the error
occurred with the corresponding page of PDF #2.

RE: XRefs mysteriously converted to text (SOLVED)

2007-08-14 Thread David Shaked \(Wernick\)
With the help of some list members, I figured out what must have happened.

I deliberately converted a couple of Xrefs to text. In one instance, I
probably right-clicked in a location that wasn't precisely on the existing
XRef and selected Cross Reference Convert to Text. For example, I may have
right-clicked immediately after the last character in the XRef. In that
case, the Convert to Text windows opens with the All Cross References
option as the default. I failed to notice the option and clicked the Convert
button.

One way to prevent the behavior, which I will try to adopt, is as follows:

* Use the Special Cross Reference command or the right-click Cross
Reference command only to create a new XRef.

* To edit an existing cross reference, always double-click the XRef itself
to ensure that it is selected. Do not right-click or use the menu to edit an
existing XRef.

* Read the options in the Convert window and think twice before converting
any XRef to text!

I already restored the XRefs, but does someone have an idea what may have
caused the problem and how I can prevent it in the future? Is there a known
FrameMaker 7.2 bug that converts XRefs to text? Is there a Convert all
XRefs to Text command that I inadvertently activated?

Possibly relevant information: The FM document was originally created by
importing from Word. Many but not all of the XRefs were originally created
by a FrameScript program, used in conjunction with the Word import. The
document has been heavily edited since then, with no other abnormal
phenomena.

Need some FM tips

2007-06-19 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
Can I ask the list members for some tips on various FM techniques? I am
using FM 7.2. Most of these questions (except #6) are about techniques that
are easy to use in Word, and I haven't yet found an FM equivalent.

1. Navigation techniques. Are there quick ways, such as shortcut keys, to do
the following:

   a. Display the book window?
   b. After following a cross reference (Alt+Ctrl+Click), go back to the
cross reference?
   c. Go back to the last place that I edited?
   d. Go to a specified page number in a book, if it is not within the
currently displayed *.fm file?

2. Is there a way to display the same document in two windows or in a split
window?

3. What is the best way to create a TOC or index conforming to a predefined
template? The method that I have used so far is the following:

   a. Copy the TOC and index templates to the document directory.
   b. Rename the files according to the convention TOC.fm and
IX.fm.
   c. Open the *.book file and choose Add > TOC or Add > Standard Index. FM
places the TOC and index in the above files and adds them to the book.

   Is that the right way?

4. On one computer, I accidentally moved my toolbar (the Quick Access Bar)
to a floating position within the document window. How can I can move it
back to the docked position at the top of the FM window? It refuses to dock.

5. If I shorten a document, I need to manually delete the blank pages at the
end of the document. Shouldn't the pages disappear automatically?

6. Can I create a book of books? My idea is to create a "super-book" that I
can use for global operations such as find/replace or import-formats
throughout a documentation set. However, I must be careful not to
inadvertently change the page and chapter numbering or corrupt any XRefs
while doing this.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Acrobat 8.1 stops FM print

2007-06-12 Thread David Shaked \(Wernick\)
I had a similar experience. I inadvertently interrupted the Acrobat 8.1
update while it was in progress. I then discovered that I couldn't access
any printer driver - even a PCL driver that is unrelated to Acrobat. My
printers folder appeared to be completely empty. All the printer drivers
were hidden.

I ran Help Check for Updates again in Acrobat. The update took about half
an hour or more. When the update was complete, it prompted for a reboot.
Printing then worked fine. All the printer drivers were restored to the
printers folder with their original configuration.

After the install of the 8.1 upgrade of Acrobat Professional, FrameMaker

I did a uninstall and a new installation (without the upgrade) and now all

Japanese variables and formatting

2007-05-14 Thread David Shaked \(Wernick\)
I am processing Japanese documents in English FM 7.2, on English Windows XP
Pro. Japanese fonts are installed on the system.

1. The document looks fine. Are there limitations on the formatting or
editing that I can perform?

2. Are there limitations on transferring documents between Japanese and
English FM?

3. How can I define an FM variable that has a Japanese value? When I paste
Japanese text into the variable definition, I get gibberish.

4. Are there any other pitfalls I should be aware of?

RE: Clipboard formats priorities

2007-03-23 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
Thanks for the information, Fred.

I would like to revise my original question. My primary need is not to paste
text. It is to paste variables, as follows:

1. Insert a variable in a particular location. The variable contains the
product name or other branding information.

2. Copy the variable.

3. Use find/change by pasting to insert the variable in hundreds of other
locations. In all cases, the variable should assume the formatting of the
target location.

Is there a way to do it? (Currently, we plan to use FrameScript. We can save
effort if there is a out-of-the-box approach.)

several other choices, too.

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=FILE, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIF, RTF, TEXT

to

ClipboardFormatsPriorities=FILE, TEXT, OLE 2, EMF, META, DIB, BMP, MIF, RTF

and restarted FM. The revision seems to have no effect. I tried revising
both the user maker.ini and the master maker.ini. What am I doing wrong?

Failing this, is there another way to change the default paste behavior, so
when I paste text from one part of a document to another, the text will
adopt the formatting of the target location? Edit > Paste Special > Text
works fine, but it is inconvenient when performing multiple pastes.

I'm using FM 7.2 on Windows XP.

Clipboard formats priorities

But there *are* a couple of free Windows utilities you can use
to strip formatting from copied content under any circumstance,
including intra-FrameMaker copy and paste. At the moment I'm
using a tool called PureText by Steve P. Miller, but there are
several other choices, too.

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

RE: Clipboard formats priorities

2007-03-22 Thread David Shaked (Wernick)
Never mind - I searched the archives some more and found that Fred Ridder
answered the question on March 2.

Notice that the maker.ini item starts with the word clipboard,
which refers to the Windows clipboard. FrameMaker only uses
the Windows clipboard when pasting content that was copied
 in another application. FrameMaker-to-FrameMaker copy/pasting
uses an internal mechanism that does not go through the
Windows clipboard. Internal copy/pasting always comes with
the formatting intact, which I actually find annoying about
half the time (for examle, when I'm making a new heading
from a phrase I copied from the text).

My opinions only; I don't speak for Intel.

Thanks very much for this information. These plug-ins look like good
solutions.

Aside from the variables, do the plug-ins create standard index entries? If
I use the plug-in, and then I share the document with another FM user who
doesn't have the plug-in, will the index entries continue to work? Will the
variables in the index entries continue to work?

Using variables for single sourcing

2007-02-05 Thread David Shaked \(Wernick\)
In FM 7.2, is it possible to use a variable in the following locations?

1. Within the text of an index marker?

2. As the directory path of a text inset or a graphic?

The purpose is single-sourcing. I want to store the name of a product in a
variable. I want the index entries, the screen captures, etc. to update
automatically when I change the value of the variable.

Are there other approaches to achieve the same goal? (I know that I can use
conditional text. I'm looking for a solution that doesn't require an
independent condition per product name.)

Importing Word fields and bookmarks to FM

2007-01-25 Thread David Shaked \(Wernick\)
Background: We are Word experts but inexperienced in FrameMaker. We are
importing a large set of Word 2003 documents to FM 7.2.

In our experiments so far, the following Word features seem to be lost in
the import process. How can we preserve them, without needing to recreate
them laboriously in FM?

1. Cross references (REF and HYPERLINK fields, along with the bookmarks that
the references point to).

2. Index entries (XE fields).

3. Included text and graphics (INCLUDETEXT fields, which point to bookmarked
text and graphics that are stored in another document).

4. WebWorks conditional text (PRIVATE WWMTS and PRIVATE WWMTE fields).

If there is no simple GUI solution, an automated solution that requires
programming (VBA and/or FrameScript) is definitely within reason.

NOTE: I'm new to the Framer's list. I searched the archives for the above
questions but didn't find much. If the subject is in the archives, I will be
grateful if someone will point me to the appropriate thread.

Thanks very much for your help.
