Re: Book Set up and Pagination
Hi Pam, If you want to force the chapter-start to the right side, the technicians will need to print double-sided unfortunately. To do this, go to *Format Page Layout Pagination* (I work in FM10 so apologies if the menu items or options are slightly different, but I believe they're still the same) You want: - *Double Sided* - 1st Page Side = *Right* - Before saving and printing = *Make Page Count Even* - This option will leave a blank page at the end of the chapter if the text ends on a odd-numbered page. You may need to adjust your templates to match as well. HTH. Give me a shout if anything's not clear. I develop manuals in Frame 12 that are PDF’d for cable and equipment technicians who must print them out before leaving for new installs. Usually I have set up the docs for single side with no right or left master pages (which looks awful when printed out). I’m working on a 180 page doc that I am setting up for a first page and left/right pages for every chapter in the book (although the first three don’t need that, I think). The first three sections of the doc are the cover (two pages—front and copyright), change page, and TOC. The fourth section, or chapter, is the installation chapter followed by separate appendices. How do I set up the book so that odd-numbered pages print out on the right side? I’d also would like to force each section to begin on the right side—how do I do that? Is putting in a blank page the only way to do that? This may not be too popular with technicians who already complain about the size of the docs. Sometimes it just takes an extra pair of eyes to spot that you aren't quite in the right directory :o) I was in the fminit directory, rather than fminit\plugins, whoops! FM10 - Changing licensed machines
Hi all, Apologies for the asking before trying approach, but I need this to be as seamless as possible as I'm a (paranoid about Adobe) sole writer with major deadlines. I have inherited the following: - Win 7 (64-bit) setup - Upgraded FM10 installation (upgraded via Adobe website, from FM7 CD installation) - Adobe Acrobat 11 installed from Adobe Cloud I have a new Win 7 (64-bit) machine that I need to re-install my setup onto. For licencing issues, I will be un-installing everything from my old machine before installing, but wanted to check if there is a recommended way of installing onto the new box. Past experience has taught me - FM first, then Adobe Acrobat, but that was with TCS. Would you recommend I use the same procedure as was originally done - that is, FM 7, FM 10 upgrade, Acrobat?? Or will Adobe allow me to download FM10 from the Cloud even though it was just an upgrade that was purchased?? Trawling through the Adobe site has left me with more questions than answers! Preventing a URL from wrapping over 2 lines
Hi Framers, Do any of you know of a way to prevent a URL from wrapping over 2 lines, without using a forced line break?? I have several places in my document where FM will automatically break a URL and wrap it across 2 lines if there isn't enough room in the paragraph, for example: http://admin.domain.com becomes http:// admin.domain.com At the moment, I'm scanning through my document and forcing a line break before the URL, but as you can well imagine, this is getting tiresome in a growing doc. I thought there would be something in the Character Designer pod, but I can't see the wood for the trees. Setup: Unstructured FrameMaker 10 Win 7 Any help is much appreciated. Re: Character format that won't stick
Hi Thomas, Your problem sounds similar to one I experienced earlier this year. I wanted to apply an italic character format to my cross-reference formats but also found it wouldn't stick. Eventually, I discovered that the font family I was given did not include an italic format. To resolve this, I set my default printer to be Adobe PDF, and have not suffered from this problem since. This is because the PDF drivers use PostScript fonts which FM can use if the the font family used does not support it. If you try setting your default printer to a PDF driver of some sort does that resolve the problem? HTH. Sam. Conditional cells in a straddled table row
Hi all, I wonder if any of you could help me. I have a table with 3 columns and 5 rows. Columns 1 and 2 have all 5 rows straddled. Column 3 contains all 5 rows separately. The last entry in column 3 contains conditional text: *| Column 1 | Column 2 | Column 3* Row A | Cell 1A | Cell 2A |* Cell 3A* Row B |||* Cell 3B* Row C ||| * Cell 3C* Row D | ||* Cell 3D* Row E *||| Cell 3E* I am unable to make all of Row E conditional as I've straddled Cell 1A, and Cell 2A over it respectively. This means when I hide my conditional text, Cell 3E, my table is left with an blank row. Is there a way of getting around this?? I experimented with having Row E unstraddled but I was unable to change the borders for that row. I may have been looking in the wrong places! In reality, this is a large table and I have this scenario repeated at various points, so I would like to avoid changing the layout where possible, but am resigned to the fact that I may have to. Hi Dave, I'd rather not duplicate the whole table as it is rather large ... but you have given me the idea of just duplicating the affected, straddled rows and conditioning them. Hopefully, that should keep it easier to maintain than 2 separate tables. Thanks, Sam.
