Adobe treats its Creative Cloud customers (InDesign / Photoshop /
Illustrator / Type / etc.) much better than its TCS (FrameMaker /
RoboHelp) / Captivate) customers.

2019-11-21 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi,

Adobe never asks partners to register any license that they have bought
themselves with the Adobe Partner Program.

However, if you buy a licenses, Adobe might ask you to register the license wit
Adobe. But that is in no way related with the Adobe Technical Communication
Partner Program.

In case anything should still be unclear, please feel invited to send me an

Hi everyone,

The email from my colleague Sirsendu was sent to you because you are listed on
the Adobe Tech Comm Partner Portal.
In the past you have received a free license from Adobe. Free partner licenses
always run for one year and at the end of the year we offer our partners to
extend the license for another year for free.

This is in no way related to any licenses you have bought yourself.

Re: [Framers] OT: (Kinda') Spam to Adobe Partners

2019-08-22 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Carol,

I did not, in any way, want to rap on Tammy's knuckles, and I'm ashamed that
one could read this out my mail.

Also, I'm very sad to hear that you have decided to be no longer an Adobe
Partner. However, we fully respect your decision, and I have initiated the
process to remove your profile and all associated data with it (I don't have
the "rights" to do that). Once this process is through, I will update you
off-list.

Stephan, I would like to ask you to remove my entry entirely.
Although this list isn't the appropriate place to ask this, for some reason,
I've taken offense at your replies to this thread. I know you didn't mean them
as such, but when I read your reply to Tammy, I felt like you were rapping her
knuckles. I have never gained a client from my listing on Adobe's site. I
always want to minimize spam (which I always filter out before downloading),
and because I get over 300 spam emails a day, every one I can eliminate will
help).

So thank you for your help.

2019-08-22 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Ian,

Your address is shown because you have entered it like that in the "Company
Adress field" which is clearly marked as such.
That is not a "serious breach of confidence." It's just that you have
registered it like that in your profile.

I have removed your address from your profile for now, and it only shows
"United Kingdom" now.
Let me know if you would like to get anything else changed.

Re: [Framers] OT: (Kinda') Spam to Adobe Partners

2019-08-21 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Tammy, Carol et al,

I get such emails practically every day as well and other people in my team,
too. The thing is, once you have published your email somewhere on the web, you
will automatically end up at some point on the lists of such criminals. There
is hardly anything one can do except for keeping your email address secret.

If those guys got your contact data from your profile on the Adobe Technical
Communication Partner Portal (https://partners.adobetechcomm.com/) – might be,
might be not. Or maybe from LinkedIn. Or maybe just from your own homepage:
https://spectrumwritingllc.com/wordpress/partners/ where you mention your
Partnership with Adobe, or
https://spectrumwritingllc.com/wordpress/spectrum-writing/contact/ where you
expose your email and phone number.

I do not see why or how Adobe should or could "patrol" the communication
between two third parties. That would be illegal anyway.

Regarding the partner portal: We are currently revamping it (while I'm
writing). As part of the revamp we thought a lot about how we can, on the one
hand, protect the privacy of our partners, and on the other hand, make the
communication between people who are interested in your services or products
and you as our partner as easy as possible. One result of these discussions is
that we introduce a contact form so that potential customers can write to you
as a partner through that form. This will eliminate the need for you to expose
your email address. However, a "bad guy" can of course also spam you with such
a form (while we will further improve this to make it as hard as possible for
them.

> 1. Adobe had to ask you to be a partner before you get added to/have access
> to the list.
Everyone can "apply" to become a partner. There is an open application form for
this on the partner portal. If we receive an application, we do an intensive
background check first to pre-validate the applicant and then go into a
one-on-one conversation with the applicant. (Exception: We know the person
already personally for a longer time and asked the person to apply). Only if
that went through, the company or individual will be approved as a partner.

> 2. Adobe monitored the list and didn't allow anyone to sign up unless they
> could be verified.
That is correct. See my comment above. No one on the partner portal is
"unknown" to us, and there are no "fake profiles."

Re: [Framers] A few questions about FrameMaker 2019

2019-01-28 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Pat,

maybe you find these blog posts helpful:

https://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2018/08/framemaker-2019-release.html
https://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2018/10/framemaker-2019-update-1.html
https://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2018/12/framemaker-2019-update-2.html

Regarding your specific questions:

* Add/delete workspace menus: Can you actually delete (or hide) menus or is
this just the custom workspace function from 2017? Is there anything
new/notable about it?

The functionality is the same as in FM 2017.
Like in previous releases, you can modify the menus by editing the cfg files in
the user profile folder. But that's a little bit advanced stuff and needs to be
handled carefully . You can find the cfg files in the user profile folder:
%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\15\WorkSpaces

* Enhanced mini-TOC: How is it enhanced?

There are no changes regarding this. Is there anything specific that you would
like to see enhanced?

* Resize pods: 2017 lets me resize pods now. What's new here?

A few more pods and dialogs have been made resizable in 2019 release.

* Smart filters in pods: What is this?

It's a small text box in pods like the paragraph catalog, where you can type in
and then the list of entries gets filtered accordingly. E.g. in the paragraph
designer, you might type in "h" or and it will filter the list to paragraph
styles that have an "h" in the style name (like "Heading1," "Heading2," or
"Hazard Statement"). The functionality was implemented for paragraph, character
and table styles, and the Elements pod.
It's especially nice, when you have a lot of styles in your style catalog. In
the first blog post mentioned above, you can find a small video showing this.

  * From the Update 1 information, it appears the PDF generation function has
been fixed and the app now scales across monitors. Have you found this to be
true?
For me yes. Would be interesting to get feedback from other users as well :-)

Hi -

I'm doing some research on the "new" and "improved" features in FM 2019. We

least, not using the terminology in their announcements) in the 2019 Help or

Re: [Framers] Find/Change history

2018-12-05 Thread Stefan Gentz
Yes, there is:

For FM 2017 and higher, the Find/Change history is strored in the user's
maker.ini, which you can find here:

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\\maker.ini

In the [Preferences] section you can find the "FindStrings" and the
"ChangeStrings" history:

FindStrings=HISTORY,FindString1, FindString2,etc.
ChangeStrings=HISTORY,ReplaceString1, ReplaceString2,etc.

You can change it to this to delete the history:

FindStrings=HISTORY,
ChangeStrings=HISTORY,

Upgrading from Frame 2017 to 2019 is $399 (if you're upgrading the license, not
a subscription).
Upgrading from TCS 2017 to 2019 is $699 (same caveat).

[Framers] Update on printing issue with Windows 10 1803 Build

2018-06-14 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi All

Just to update you on Windows 10 (1803 build) issue which impacted File ->
Print and File -> Save as PDF options with FrameMaker (Versions 12, 2015, and
2017).

We have been working closely with the Microsoft team on this issue, and
recently an insider Windows 10 build was released:
https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2018/06/06/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-17686/

We have started testing out the issue that was reported on this insider build
and the initial testing indicates that this issue has been resolved. We are
still in the process of further verification and confirming that the issue has
been resolved back to Microsoft team.

For those of you who have access to Windows 10 Insider preview builds (or would
like to get enrolled in the beta program for Windows) , please visit
https://insider.windows.com/en-us/ and try the new preview build. Once
installed, if you check you Windows version it should show screenshot as below
("Version 1803 (OS Build 17686.10003"):

Re: [Framers] Location of ditamap TOC template

2018-03-17 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Rick,

> When I save a ditamap as a FrameMaker book with components,
> I get a TOC generated. Where is this TOC template stored?

The default templates are located here:
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Adobe\Adobe FrameMaker
2017\Structure\xml\DITA\outputTemplates

You can copy these files to a different folder of your choice and modify them
there.

Then open the ditafm-output.ini and customize it:

%AppData%\Adobe\FrameMaker\14\ditafm-output.ini

Set the new root folder for your templates by modifying this path:

[General Options]
TemplateDir=$STRUCTDIR\xml\DITA\outputTemplates

You can also use different file names if you want. Just change this entry
accordingly:

[BookWithFM-TOC]
Template=TOCTpl.fm

If you want, you can do the same for other templates. You can also configure
many more settings in the ditafm-output.ini.

The documentation for the flags in the ditafm-output.ini can be found here:
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/2017/ini/index.html#t=book%2Ffrm_ditafmoutput_dt%2Fditafm-output_ini_sections_and_flags-.htm

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 142, Issue 17

2018-01-30 Thread Stefan Gentz
Yes, I guess my hunch was right. That looks pretty much like a bold fauxing
which is hard to fix. Feel free to send me the file as a zipped MIF and I will
be happy to look at it and provide a fix.

Stefan, SymbolBolded is reported as missing even though the docs have no bolded
symbols. The Symbol character tag with no weight is applied.
SymbolBolded is not in the Fonts pod. I've searched for it with no luck. It's
not on the body, reference, or master pages. I've even looked at one of the MIF
files and didn't see Symbol Bolded anywhere.

Which font (exactly) was reported as missing before you tried to get rid of it
by turning off "Remember missing font names"? And which font (exactly) is
reported as missing now?
I'm asking, because FM replaces fonts by a standard mappings (see maker.ini).
And maybe something like "Fontname1 Heavy" was replaced with "Fontname2 Heavy"
(which might be not present as well) or somethings replacement problems come up
with Bold, Italic, BoldItalic replacements.

Re: [Framers] Simplified Chinese and Latin Quotation Marks

2018-01-27 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi,

Heiko Haida wrote:
> the symbols U+201C and U+201D have to be used for the double quotes (in
> Simplified Chinese).

At least as long as it's actually a "Quotation Mark." (for a quotation).

If it's a title mark (e.g. for a book, or e.g. a chapter heading) fullwidth
double angle brackets should be used as primary quotes):

《…》 (U+300A left double angle bracket, U+300B right double angle bracket)

For embedding fullwidth single angle brackets, 〈…〉 (U+3008 left angle bracket,
U+3009 right angle bracket) should be used (like this: 《…〈…〉…》)

(I hope the Chinese characters in this mail will make it through the list
software.)

I was discussing the use of quotation marks long and broad with several Chinese
TechComm experts at tcworld China Conference in Shanghai last spring and with
Chinese typography experts after the conference. Final recommendation was to
use 《…》in cross-references to the title of other documents or subheadings (in
the same or external document). Same also if you reference to titles of other
documentations (like mentioning "Administrator Guide" in the "User Guide") or
mentioning official papers, standard documents etc.

That is, this would be the "perfect" way. However, I was confirmed that Chinese
readers are also okay with the use of “…” in all scenarios - especially when
they know, that the text was typeset by non-Chinese people. (But I guess it
might be nice to avoid that this impression comes up.)

Hi Rick,

the symbols U+201C and U+201D have to be used for the double quotes.
The problem you describe should not occur with FM 2017 (in my test, everything
was ok).

Also, the quotes should be handled in way that they will be formatted with the
Chinese font (not the Latin font).

upgrade, especially when it's a bigger jump, the best practice is usually to do
a test on a separate instance. Generally speaking, this is just best practice
in IT.

Like most people, you will probably not face any issues.

However, I remember a support cases, where updating Windows from 7/8 to 10 had
an impact on their documents. As far as I remember, those issues were related
to a change in Windows in the "Uniscribe Unicode Script Processor" which had an
impact on how their OpenType fonts were rendered (having a small impact on line
breaks in the documents). Also it had an impact on PDF generation, (in Win 8
fonts in PDF were wrong, in Win 10 they were correct).

Ok Stefan,
These aren't trivial issues obviously and don't make me feel secure in my
decision at all. I have had 3 responses saying that running Windows 10 w/ older
versions of Framemaker had not been an issue. Does anyone else on this list
have experience either way?
Thank you.

There are many people running older versions of FrameMaker on Windows 10.
Adobe introduced "official" support for Windows 10 in FrameMaker 2015, Update 1.
However, this only means, that Adobe has certified FM 2015, Update 1, for
Windows 10. Older versions are not certified for Windows 10, and therefore
there is no official support for running older versions on Windows 10.

Please note, that there are certain changes in Windows 10, that have or can
have an impact on FrameMaker depending on the use case. Areas where Windows has
an impact on FrameMaker can be e.g. installation, rights management related
issues, fonts, font rendering, and printing.

Hi All,

Thank you for the responses. Yes, from my extensive googling and pounding
through the forums, it does seem that FM 10 and 12 both run just fine on
Windows 10. And based on the statement that I pulled from HowToGeek, that would
make sense; however, as only FM2015 is explicitly called out as being
compatible with Win 10, I am understandingly a bit hesitant, but I probably
won't have a choice.

Carrier pigeon anyone?

Thanks!

FM 10 and 12 run on my Windows 10 system with no issues. Not sure about Acrobat

That works fine, but I don't know about other functions in there.

*

Microsoft's Windows 10 seems like a big change. The version number alone is a
big leap from Windows 7, and most of the default apps are new-style "universal
apps," not traditional desktop apps.

But, if you depend on traditional Windows desktop applications, you shouldn't
worry. Don't let Windows 10's new look fool you - if an application ran on
Windows 7, it should also run on Windows 10.

*

But, is this true? Will FM 10 and 12 and Adobe Acrobat XI run on Windows 10?
(64-bit system). Have any of you had experience (good/bad/indifferent) running
these programs on Windows 10?

Thanks!

Stephan, rather than clogging the list with "me too" emails that help no one

[Framers] DWG in FrameMaker

2017-12-18 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Framers,

a quick poll:

Are you using AutoCAD DWG files in your FrameMaker documents? I'm not talking
about DXF files, but AutoCAD native AutoCAD DWG files. Or are you all using DXF
files or PDF to reference drawings coming from AutoCAD?

It would be great, if a lot of you would reply with a quick "Yes, we're
actively using DWG files in our documents" or "No, we don't use DWG files, but
DXF/PDF/"

I'm looking forward to a lot of replies J

[Framers] Tomorrow - Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen to open Adobe DITA World 2017

2017-10-09 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Framers,

you have probably seen it already: Tomorrow, October 10 at 9:00 am Pacific Time
the 2nd Adobe DITA World<http://www.dita-world.com/> starts.

It's a big pleasure for me, that we could win Adobe's President and CEO
Shantanu Narayen to deliver a small Welcome Note to open the conference!
Right after that, Scott Abel will deliver his keynote "The Cognitive Era and
the Future of Content."

More than 2,200 technical communication experts from all over the world have
already registered for the conference.

If Structured Content, Content Strategy, marketing of technical content,
Technical Content in the age of Information 4.0 and Industry 4.0, technical
content writing, translation and of course DITA is of interest for you, we will
be delighted to have you all with us in the next three days. I'm sure that even
for those not explicitly interested in DITA, there is something in the program
for you.

Have a look at the program and register for free for this online conference
here: www.dita-world.com<http://www.dita-world.com>

Looking forward to seeing many of you in the next three days!

Re: [Framers] Is the FM '17 PreRelease area still functioning / being monitored?

2017-06-22 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi folks,

the Beta Forum is only actively monitored when there is actually a beta program
running.
One the next beta starts, we'll let all the beta testers know :-)

Art, I also did so until Stefan Genz told me, that nobody at Adobe will look
into the beta forum after release...
Hence I duplicated my reports and requests to the public bug base since at
least March.

Re: [Framers] Unable to obtain newest TCS from Adobe under maintenance agreement

2017-05-30 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Dan,

sounds like very bad experience. Without more details it's difficult for me to
say, what went wrong where, but I can assure you, that we can sort this out
quickly.

Please send me off-list some more details and connect me with your campus rep
so that I can see which "maintenance contract" we are talking about. It sounds
a little bit strange to me, because from my first understanding you should be
in the University Outreach Program from Adobe Technical Communication and not
under some "maintenance contract" (from probably some other agreement between
your University and Adobe).

Looking forward to your email to ge...@adobe.com<mailto:ge...@adobe.com>. I'm
in flights most if the day tomorrow, but will try to solve it in between with
you and your campus rep. If gor some reason it should not work tomorrow (you
never know when traveling), we will sort it out on Thursday.

In December of 2015 my university department purchased a renewal of software
"maintenance" for my license of Technical Communication Suite, which is
supposed to provide all upgrades at no charge through January 1, 2018. When TCS
2017 was released earlier this year I had the campus software purchasing entity
put through a request to obtain my copy of TCS 2017 under the agreement. My
campus rep has been working on this for MONTHS now and keeps getting
stonewalled and passed around to different groups within Adobe, with no

For whatever reason, Adobe is refusing to honor the software maintenance that
we paid for.

Whom at Adobe should I be yelling at? I've reached my limit with respect to

Re: [Framers] Frame 15 UI annoyances

Hi Bertrand,

Currently there is no way to avoid this message, and it will probably not go
away, as it is important to warn users that they will lose information when
they save to to MIF 7 from any version above FM 8. All versions starting with
FM8 use Unicode. Older versions are encoded in FrameRoman codepage. Saving FM8
or higher to MIF7 converts all text strings to FrameRoman. However, this only
works for characters that can be covered by the old FrameRoman codepage. All
other characters will be converted to question marks ("?").

You will not run into problems, if you are strictly using only characters in
FM8 or higher that are "compatible" with the old FrameRoman codepage. E.g., if
you only write in English and do not use any other Unicode based characters or
special symbol fonts.

There is a tool called PTFB ("Push the freaking Button"), which is a "Mouse
Auto Clicker". You can define this warning dialog and whenever it appears, PTFB
will automatically click the button. Maybe it helps you: http://www.ptfbpro.com/
I found it quite useful some years ago.

This option creates a "*.backup.fm" file. It does not create "*.auto.fm" files.
Not sure right now, why you get "*.auto.fm" files. Are your files quite big? I
think to remember that FM creates "*.auto.fm" files in some rare scenarios (I
think it was, when you are saving extremely big files).

1. I am saving in MIF 7.0. Any way to get rid of the pesky dialog that warns me
each time that I am losing information (I am not)? It's driving me crazy.
2. I unchecked "Auto backup on Save" in Preferences, but I still get my folders

These issues did not arise with earlier versions.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker keyboard shortcuts just stop

Hi Klaus,

thanks for filing in this as a bug.

@all: Could you please put in your System Configuration (exact Windows version
/ 32/64 bit) and other software (name, version) that you are using that forces
this behavior to occur in the bug report, that Klaus has created:
https://tracker.adobe.com/#/view/FRMAKER-2325

Thanks! This will help us to investigate this further.

Ken, I have filed a bug FRMAKER-2325 stating that frequently all CTRL+xx
shortcuts do not work any more. On my system (W7 XP1, x64) this 'feature'
exists since about FM-11. I hoped it would go away with a fresh Windows
installation on a new laptop - but it did not. So it definetely must be
something with FrameMaker.

I have even discovered that the following actions can trigger the fault:
- switch to another application (e.g. text editor) and back to FM
- switch to Pincackle Studio (a video editor) and back reproduceably creates
the fault.

I have just added to that bug report:
«It seems that not only CTRL-xxx shortcuts are affected, but all Windows
specific short cuts (not the ESC sequences). See the lengthy lamento on

2017-05-02 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Carol,

interesting. I do not have the "Automatically download updates, but let me
choose when to install them." in Acrobat Pro DC anymore. Only "Automatically
install updates."

I guess the best is to post your question in the corresponding thread in the
Acrobat Forum and tag one of the Adobe support people how were involved in it.

error: "The program can't start because MSVCP140.dll is missing from your
computer." There was a huge flurry of posts to adobe's forums (see
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2308268). The end result is that the problem
was created by an update that Adobe pushed out and they resolved it the next
day by rolling back the update.

The part of this that has me confused is that I should not have ANY updates to
ANYTHING being pushed onto my system. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and
Framemaker 12. My OS is set to never allow Windows to update anything
automatically. Obviously I'm not using Adobe CC so any auto-updates should not
occur.

So 1) how did I receive the initial update that caused this problem; and 2) how
did I receive the roll-back to the update that fixed the problem? What part of
"no automatic updates to my system" is being bypassed here?

Thanks for any information you can glean and share with us regarding this issue.

Carol Elkins

Hello,

Has anyone had difficulty downloading FrameMaker 2017 update 1, from the
FrameMaker downloads page?
The table does not appear to detail anything about the download.

I can't use the Adobe Update Manager due to security protocol restrictions at
customer sites.

I tried the link on the "New Downloads" link:

https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsupportdownloads.adobe.com%2Fsupport%2Fdownloads%2Fnew.jsp=02%7C01%7C%7Cc31755256ae34f22566b08d4915d35fa%7Cfa7b1b5a7b34438794aed2c178decee1%7C0%7C0%7C636293276904453249=SL85Mpq59VTdcFmGHkyJ6LHNDVNVbeu7uyJMeGkC8Yo%3D=0
but the web page responds with the line:
Error in obtaining download items, please try again later.

I then decided to try the Downloads Help page:

https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsupportdownloads.adobe.com%2Fsupport%2Fdownloads%2Fhelp.html=02%7C01%7C%7Cc31755256ae34f22566b08d4915d35fa%7Cfa7b1b5a7b34438794aed2c178decee1%7C0%7C0%7C636293276904453249=f8Sq%2FJ5w%2BI6iLY4%2FNiWWH0HM7wt3YUuXTwVfrzDouUM%3D=0
and tried the "Unable to connect to the Adobe FTP site" link, which gave the
text "Sorry, this page is unavailable"

[Framers] FrameMaker 2017, Update 1 - Overview

2017-05-01 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Framers,

since last week Update 1 for FrameMaker 2017 is available.

We have fixed a couple of bugs and implemented a lot of Feedback that we got
from you. Some modal dialogs were rolled back to non-modal pods, working with
the language drop-down in Character and Paragraph Designer is more easy now
(all language names in English instead of their native language names), there
is a completely new "Sort Table" dialog, the "Show Element Context" dialog is
resizable now, "Command Search" works better now in multi-monitor scenarios,
save as "View Only" is back and a lot more.

I have gathered all the changes in this blog post:
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2017/04/framemaker-2017-update-1.html

Thanks to everyone who contributed with his/her feedback!

Re: [Framers] Suddenly not working FM functionality?

2017-04-29 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Tammy,

Are your PNGs embedded or referenced?

I have just tested this on my machine on Win 10 with FM 2017. With a referenced
image, double-clicking the image in FM opens Photoshop. Then I changed in Win
10 in the settings in "Choose default apps by file type" .png from Photoshop to
Windows "Photos" app. Double-clicked the image in FM and it opens in ...
Photos! Changing back to Photoshop: Et voilà, it opens in Photoshop again. I do
not even need to restart FM for that.

Then I imported the same PNG with "Copy into document" (that is, not by
reference). Now double-clicking the image does not open any editor anymore.
Also the "Edit with" in the context menu is deactivated. This makes sense in
some way, I guess.

I have called support and I am awaiting a call back. We shall see. I have not
taken any Windows updates, etc. All was humming and then bang, but then the
problem even exists w/ a brand new install of FM 12 on the same system, so the
culprit is???

I'd call Adobe support. Or maybe just try resetting FrameMaker to its defaults
by closing the app, deleting maker.ini, and restarting.

Re: [Framers] Does FrameMaker Have Something Similar to Word's Embedded Files?

2017-04-25 Thread Stefan Gentz
Sure. That's always the issue with links to external file.

But you just triggered an idea in me:

In PDF you can have "Attachments" (just drag and drop external files into the
Attachment panel of an open PDF).
And you can create links to attachments (however, only to PDF attachments) ...
And there are PostScript frames and pdfmarks ...

Hmmm ... :-)

Typically files won't be accessible to the person who's reading a PDF, so
you'll get a nice clickable image that gives a "file not found"
error.

You could bundle the file with the PDF in a .zip archive.

Hi Carol,

thanks for your detailed answer as well.

Currently we have no plans to change the feature as it is, the question is
only, if we bring it back to the UI and document it, and you sound to be happy
with the solution from Rick :-)

Stephan, I'm the client for whom Rick scripted a marvelous solution for some of
the limitations of Frame's Freeze Pagination functionality. I had no idea of
the limitations until he enumerated them in his email to you. His script makes
the whole process of using point pages a miraculously simple operation.

I write documentation for America's rail industry, and it relies heavily on
quarterly updates to manuals critical to moving freight.
The manuals are printed in their entirety once a year; quarterly "changed
pages" are released and users are expected to replace the pages in their
manuals with the changed pages (all changed text is identified with change
bars). Thus pagination must be kept constant.
If new content is added, point pages must be created to house that content so
that subsequent pages are unaffected. At the beginning of a new cycle, the book
is unfrozen, point pages are incorporated back into the newly repaginated book,
and the process begins again.

The rail industry has historically lagged behind technology, and I don't see
that changing (although electronic sensors are a hot item in an effort to make
rail transport more safe). I'm still modifying documents that were originally
written in the late 1800s. The industry makes its manuals available as PDFs and
they sell well.
However, there are federal quality assurance requirements that demand hardcopy
manuals exist and be kept up to date. Until the old school engineers and execs
retire, hardcopy manuals will persist.

I would encourage (beg?) Adobe to not remove freeze pagination and point page
functionality. (If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.) But I'm not sure it
makes sense to spend research dollars to improve the feature. I suggest letting
third-party providers like Rick continue writing scripts for the very few of us
that use the technology. That hopefully will meet everyone's needs and promote
free enterprise.

Re: [Framers] Does FrameMaker Have Something Similar to Word's Embedded Files?

2017-04-25 Thread Stefan Gentz
Ho Robert,

nothing special. PDF does not support embedded files within page content.
Basically it's similar to Word (Packager Shell Object). So, in PDF you will
likely just see nothing or a tiny small file name, maybe an icon (not sure).

What you can do in FM, which might be quite nice of you want to get a clickable
link in PDF (or HTML5 output):
Insert a hypertext marker with content "message URL mytextfile.txt", place a
nice txt file icon as an inline graphic after it and put a character style like
"link" over the marker and the inline AFrame.

This way you will get a nice clickable image that will open the external file
(in my sample the txt file "mytextfile.txt") (in the browser).

2017-04-25 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Sandra,

You might want to test this:

Create a FrameMaker document, place the insertion mark to where you want the
text file to appear.
Now go to > File > Import > Object. In the "Insert Object" dialog, select
"Create from File" and click "Browse..." to select your text file.
Activate the "Link" textbox, if you want to insert the object as a link instead
of embedding it. Otherwise leave it unchecked (will embed the text file).

Once inserted, you can double click on it and it will open the application
associated with your object (in your case the application that is associated
with txt files, which is usalle Windows Notepad).

Re: [Framers] "Secret" Freeze Pagination Feature

2017-04-25 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Shmuel,

thanks for your answer. I'm not sure if I completely understand the
requirement. Do I understand right, that you would like to be able to define a
specific style (e.g. "Heading1") in some sort of "Repagination Warning Setup"
(dialog) and whenever you add or remove content somewhere that makes one of the
paragraphs tagged with "Heading1" on some other page move to some other page
you get a warning message? (Same for the table example you mentioned.)

Plus: I'm just wondering right now, if a feature that automatically warns you
when you want to save as PDF / print that your automatically generated lists
(TOC, IX etc.) are "out of sync" and recommends to update them. Would that be
useful?

Hi Stefan,

Instead of freeze pagination, what I would like is a pagination warning.
This feature would, when turned on, warn you when a paragraph with one of the
user-specified specified styles moves to a new page, and when some rows of a
table end up on a new page. This would be helpful when editing a doc, so that
you know when the pagination changed and the TOC needs to be updated, or to
look over the tables to see where rows moved to a new page. For extra credit,
the feature would also provide a list of where these changes occurred. This
would be a great help. Many times after a few edits, I find myself reviewing
the entire doc to see where the headings appear and updating all the TOCs just
in case a heading, table caption or figure caption, moved to a new page.

The current feature the way it is is pretty much useless to me.

Subject: Re: [Framers] "Secret" Freeze Pagination Feature

Hi Stefan,

The concept behind Freeze Pagination could be very useful for certain
categories of documentation. The way it is implemented in FrameMaker severely
limits its usefulness. Here are the major problems that occur when you freeze
pagination:

1. Paragraphs that break across a page are split into two paragraphs.
2. Tables that break across a page cause point pages to be added as soon as the
pagination is frozen.
3. Content after last page of a multi-page table is pushed to the following
page.
4. This may be the hardest to live with: autonumbers are reset on each page
because of the disconnected text frames.
5. You can't freeze pagination in a structured document.

I have a good client that uses point pages for documentation used in a
particular transportation sector. I wrote a "PointPages" plugin back in 2005 or
so that overcame some of the limitations listed above. I sold a few copies but
you had to follow a specific process to get good results and I got a
disproportionate number of support requests, so I discontinued it. I converted
some of the key functionality to a set of FrameScript scripts so that my client
could still use point pages in her documentation. She still uses it for her
client today.

If you are curious about how I overcame the limitations of Freeze Pagination,
you can see the PointPages documentation at

http://www.rickquatro.com/resources/PointPages.pdf

Be careful that you don't ask the wrong question about Freeze Pagination.
The question should not be "Do you use it?" You should ask, "Do you have a need
for a reliable point-page feature?" The answer to the first question could be a
reflection on the limitations of the feature in FrameMaker, not the need for
point pages in general. That said, I don't think there is a big demand for
point pages in general. I have had a few requests over the years, but not a
large amount.

As far as the existing command, my suggestion would be to leave it there.
Since it is not documented, it is not likely to become a support problem for
Adobe, but I know at least one client that still uses it. I can't see any
reason to take it out unless it is somehow "in the way" in the code.

But what about a Point Pages feature that actually works! I am not sure what
the demand is, but the simplest solution could be a way to apply custom
numbering to individual pages, just like custom numbering can be applied to
entire FrameMaker files (and book components). The premise behind Freeze
Pagination is that the point pages would be automatically created after
pagination was frozen. But I think people would give up this automated aspect
and be willing to apply the point page numbering "manually" if this was
available to them in FrameMaker. The users of my plugin were certainly willing
to do some manual work to get point pages in their docs.

For those who do not know the feature: Let's say you have a 100-page document

after page 7, they will be numbered as 7.1, 7.2 etc.).
The idea of this feature back in the days was to create "revision pages"
("point pages").

That said, I understand how the feature works, but in more than 20 years I have
never used it myself (never had a use case for it) nor met anyone ever using it
and all people I have asked in the last days who know this feature told me the

My question to you:
- Has anyone ever used this feature when it was still present in the UI many
versions back?
- Is anyone still using it?
- What is the use case scenario that you can think of where it still might be
useful?

Your feedback will help us to have a new look at this feature and discuss what
to do with it (bring it back to the UI and document it or keep it hidden or
maybe even remove it).

Looking forward to your feedback,

The current main issue, from a user's point of view, is how the product

them - namely, having to re-create screen shots because of those visible

The underlying issue is the product's engineering architecture, which
historically has been difficult to repair and to advance.

The corporate decisions that accelerate release cycles, and reduce development

Users appreciate the work that goes into making the product. They don't

Perhaps you can employ the user-community arguments you're hearing here to help

There's no doubt that the problems were seen and commented upon during
pre-release testing, by the developers and the volunteer pre-release testers.
That the product was released with the unfixed problems, indicates that the
decision-makers ruled in favor of something other than usability. That's the
issue.

Re: [Framers] Font size in marker windows, in FM2017

2017-03-20 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Austin,

compatibility with high-dpi screens is one of the major changes in the 2017
release. FrameMaker fully supports high-dpi screens up to 4k (3840 x 2160).
This can also be found on our official product pages:
http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/features.html
Please also see our video about it:
https://video.tv.adobe.com/v/16936/
(Although it's "only" in Full HD, not 4k).

FrameMaker 2017 recognizes your screen resolution and Windows display scaling
and adopts automatically the UI scaling based on your Windows environment even
for multi-monitor environments with different resolutions / dpi ("Per-Monitor
DPI-aware" in Microsoft terminology).

Unfortunately this list does not allow embedding screenshots or attachments.
But I will be happy to send you a screenshot taken on a 4k monitor by e-mail if
you allow me to do so.

Also, would you mind telling me the name of the sales rep that you were talking
to? I would like to catch up with him/her.

When Adobe released FM2017, they claimed to have finally made it compatible
with high-density screens, but I noticed that their screen grabs did not
include any demonstration of this. Since I suspected that they were merely
lying again, I contacted a sales rep and promised that I would upgrade
*immediately* to FM2017, *paying whatever price*, if only they would provide
me with a screen grab that demonstrated that they were at long last telling the
truth -- that their newest release was indeed compatible with high-density
screens. When the sales rep was (predictably) nonresponsive, I presumed that
this meant that they were lying again. -- Now I see, from this thread, that
unfortunately this was an accurate assessment.

Please pardon me for anger at their disrespect of their customer base -- after
passing through every release of FrameMaker since long before Adobe acquired
it, I am 79 now, and my eyes have become my severe limiting condition.

Re: [Framers] FM 2017 Feature Request: Restore color and scaling to menu icons

2017-03-20 Thread Stefan Gentz
Dear Alison,

I'm so sorry, if you felt that my original mail was offensive to you. That's
not at all what I wanted! When I was writing about a "young and fresh team full
of energy" I did not in any way wanted to imply anything negative about older
people. Not at all!

Let me explain where I was coming from, please: I know the product and all
these complaints since 20 years - 19 years before I started at Adobe. And I did
the same complaints than many other here. And why did I do this? Because I made
the same experiences and got frustrated from time to time as well. And you know
what? Personally I think it was very valid to criticize a lot of things and it
was often very legitimate.

But things have changed. The Adobe TechComm team that I know today has a very
customer focused, open and listening attitude. We want your feedback, we want
your bug reports and we want to fix them. We even go out and actively "hunt for
bugs" in forums and with customers, and we want to improve the product, and we
want to and we do solve old, long outstanding bugs and problems. This is true
for the support team, true for the engineering team and true for all other of
my colleagues in the Adobe TechComm team.

And yes, I do think it's sometimes good to let history be history. That does
not mean forgetting and that does not mean ignoring history. Yes, I absolutely
agree with you that we do need to learn from history to make the future better.
And, believe me – as a German I grew up with that attitude my whole life. It's
so to say deep in my DNA. But sometimes it's also good to accept that things
change: Life, business, colleagues, friends etc. – and then move forward, focus
on the future, take a new look at things, realistically review the status quo
and compare it with the past. And sometimes it's also a good idea to accept
that people, products and companies can and do change their attitudes and are
doing better.

By the way, Adobe is one of the best employers worldwide, and gets the best
rankings from their employees year after year, and Adobe is treating their
employees very well in many aspects and has a great culture of diversity,
equality, respect and creativity. I'm not aware of anyone in my team who what
not sign that immediately. And maybe that's why we are "fresh and with a lot of
energy". Young is relative (I'm 41 "only"? "already"?). And maybe it's more
about staying "young" in the mind and an attitude. So yes, we are a "young"
team, with many fresh and good ideas, full of innovation, energized to solve
old problems and come up with great new solutions.
There are of course people in the team who are in the team for many years. But
for a product that has a 30 years history, it's normal in the IT world that
teams change. People join and leave over the years. That has nothing to do with
"bad treatment" or anything negative you might want to want to imply. It's just
normal life.

That said, sorry, if you felt that my original mail was offensive to you.
That's not at all what I wanted.
So, and now I will open a ticket in our system for implementing something that
Rick Quatro had send me earlier today. Another of those "old" (may I?), long
pending request :-)

Stefan Gentz

History isn’t just history. Remember "those who do not learn history are doomed
to repeat it" which means you make the same mistakes over and over. Sound
familiar when taken in context with some of the comments in this thread?
It’s not an accomplishment to say “More or less no one from the old FrameMaker
days is in the FrameMaker team today”. That’s a sad commentary on the way Adobe
(among others) does business and how it treats its employees.
And “young and fresh…with a lot of energy” in this context is nothing to brag
about. It implies that older, experienced personnel just drag down the team..
“Tried and true” can be better for *good* reason. I’ve personally seen “young
and fresh” team members push for something that’s long since been rejected by
users as the o

Hi

In the last days there was some discussion about them index marker text window.

David Stamm had file this in as an enhancement request:

The marker window has changed in FM 2017 and is no in the same look and feel
like other pods. Also the font size is the same as in the text field of all
other dialogs:

In FrameMaker 2015 there was a different marker pod based on a different
technology.

@all: Please give me feedback, on what is different in the index marker window
for you that does make it more difficult to work with text in index markers
compared with other markers or text in other dialogs / pods.

Wait, don't misunderstand what Stefan is saying. The font size of the marker
window is the same in 2017 as it is in earlier versions. So you will be very
disappointed (and upset) if you upgrade to 2017 and expect a larger font in the
marker window.

Stefan -

Thanks for this update.  Unfortunately, I have no idea whether (and if so,
when) I will get FrameMaker 2017 Release.  I guess that the change you reported
is something I'll just have to look forward to.

Hi

In the last days there was some discussion about them index marker text window.

David Stamm had file this in as an enhancement request:
https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftracker.adobe.com%2F%23%2Fview%2FFRMAKER-2451=02%7C01%7C%7C0acefd5e491145419edf08d46f916218%7Cfa7b1b5a7b34438794aed2c178decee1%7C0%7C0%7C636256117585634345=TOtaFEaHwlADwUVwiS4NBDH2n%2BTQhzTnQLb5z9kLP9s%3D=0

The marker window has changed in FM 2017 and is no in the same look and feel
like other pods. Also the font size is the same as in the text field of all
other dialogs:

[cid:image025.jpg@01D2A0BE.831E09E0]

In FrameMaker 2015 there was a different marker pod based on a different
technology.

@all: Please give me feedback, on what is different in the index marker window
for you that does make it more difficult to work with text in index markers
compared with other markers or text in other dialogs / pods.

Re: [Framers] FM 2017 Feature Request: Restore color and scaling to menu icons

2017-03-18 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Peter,

my history with FrameMaker might be short and small compared to yours (I have
only about 20 years of FrameMaker history on my shoulders, only something like
+50,000 hours of working with FM, and only several million pages processed for
all kind of companies from very small to super big in only up to 60 languages
in both unstructured and structured FrameMaker). But I know many of the fights
you fought as well and understand very well where you are coming from.

I remember very well the time when I modified the fmdlg.dll in the late 90ies
and early two thousands to make several dialogs bigger (especially the xref
dialog). Or how I hacked the FrameMaker.exe to output unmodified bookmarks code
into ps and created fmroman to Unicode mapping tables, and hooked them into
distillers epilog.ps. Or my scripts to do regex-based find & replace in MIF
source code because the find & replace in FrameMaker was, let’s say: very
basic. And I remember very well my yearlong fights for Unicode in FrameMaker
and later on my yearlong fights for Right-To-Left support. I have fought
countless fights with Adobe for about 20 years, before I finally joined them.
So, tell me something, Peter …

And? History is history! More or less no one from the old FrameMaker days is in
the FrameMaker team today. Product Managers, engineers, QA, etc. – the whole
team is pretty young and fresh. And with a lot of energy. And in the last two
years only they have tackled hundreds and hundreds of long and outstanding
community wishes and requirements and many old bugs. Over the last 20 years a
lot of them had accumulated. And in the last 2 years only, a big bunch of them
were fixed and delivered. There are still some left and we are already working
on them. With the soon to come Update 1 for FrameMaker we will fix and deliver
on the next bunch of some long-time requests and bugs.

Adobe pushed FM development in the last 2 years heavily. The release cycles
become much shorter and every three months a bigger update with new
enhancements and bug fixes is rolled out. Our list of community wished is
getting shorter every day and we have already started on tackling several other
bigger areas of improvement.

Maybe it’s time, Peter, to adjust your negative picture that you have built
over the last 20, 30 years.

Hi, Stefan:

Thanks for your detailed reply.

Again, with all due respect, your short history with FrameMaker puts you at a
disadvantage, because, over the decades, many of the detailed recent feature
enhancements, additions, and bug-fixes you noted, have been kicked to the "for
future action" lists many times over.

We do appreciate the effort it's taken all the team members to achieve these
improvements. We've never doubted the sincere dedication that the FrameMaker
developers and teammates bring to the challenges of moving FM forward.

However, the over-arching reality is that the decision-makers who apportion the
bare-subsistence budget to development are in control, so despite the good
intentions and dedication of the development team to meet the competitive needs
and customer/user requirements and requests, they continue to exist in the same
borderline-survival mode.

2017-03-17 Thread Stefan Gentz
Hi Lin,

currently the size of the icons is based on the Windows display scaling and
FrameMaker automatically selects one of the three sizes based on the system
scaling.

We are already discussing to make icon size a user-based preference.

You said that there are 3 sizes available for the icons. So what I'm wondering
is, is it possible to select a preferred size instead of the one served up by
default for whatever your resolution is. It won't be color, but it'll be easier
for those of us with eye issues to see.

Exactly so. Plus the feedback from many users who didn’t want to have colored
icons anymore and requested a design to be calmer and more in line with other
Adobe products.

> If coloring the icons turns out to be too much effort, is it possible to allow
> users to choose to use icons from the larger sets rather than the ones that

Not sure, if I understand what you mean with “from the larger sets” … There is
no “larger set” of icons in FM 2017. And the colored icons from 2015 do not
work anymore as they were based on an older technology and are not compatible
with high-dpi screens.

In theory it would probably be possible to make the icons “theme based” and
allow users to create their own themes with their own icons. But … to provide a
full theme, you would have to create a total of +600 icons and all of them in
three sizes (a total of 1,836 icons, just counted them). Not sure, if there
would be really a lot of users who would want to do that …

We have an open discussion about colored icons internally. Yes, we did hear
you! But we have a lot of things on the roadmap and want to tackle a lot of
long time user requests and bugs. Some of the requests are very old (many of
them requested in this forum as well), most of them are very valid and
important for the majority of users, others are simply necessary to modernize
FrameMaker, others are new and innovative features. So, honestly, we will have
to balance, if we spend resources into bringing back colored icons, or changes
requested here and the Adobe User Forum like a new PDF Engine, finally fixing
CMYK, 64 bit support, updating Pantone libraries, more advanced search &
replace functionalities … to call out just a few requests.

red to make FrameMaker’s user interface technology fit
for the future. Beside this a lot of ground work in the code was done to set
the foundation for future developments.
Most of this is not visible to the end-user, but it was necessary ground work
in the background that had to be done. In many aspects FrameMaker 2017 is a
much more modern product today “under the hood” and in many aspects the
foundation is set for the future. It might not be “visible”, but we had to do
this and you can be sure, that we will continue to make FrameMaker the best
tool for technical writers.

Oh yes! Believe me, everyone in the Adobe TechComm team would love to get a
bigger budget. And we’re fighting for it everyday competing with other business
units J

But to be realistic … just look at every normal company. I guess more or less
all of you have made this experience: How big is the budget of the marketing
department? And how small is the budget of the tech comm department? Right. And
guess what? Adobe has excellent tools for creatives and marketing … and
excellent tools for TechComm. I guess you get the idea J

With all due respect, Stefan:

You're pointing out Adobe's longest-running lame excuse for denying development
resources to FrameMaker. Other Adobe products adjusted to high-resolution
screens long ago.

There's always been the sense in replies to user requests, that users who ask
for product improvements and enhancements are whiners who aren't satisfied with
an already-great product.

One of the fundamental issues that have crippled FM development, going back to
the 1990s is it's original engineering architecture. Over the years, it's been
patched in many truly genius ways, to be able to provide more and newer
features. However, the more complicated the patchwork has become, the more
difficult it has become to evolve.

When InDesign was introduced, one of its claims was that the engineering model
- a core engine that hosts plug-in and add-on modules for
independently-designed features- would make it simpler to maintain and evolve.
Even with this more-advanced engineering concept and design, software
development demands resources to move ahead in a timely way to remain
competitive, and even to leap ahead of competitors. It's a hope; the reality is
that product advancement is slow, demanding, and expensive.

Even with the Creative Suite engineering model - applications that share common
user interface appearances, some common features and operations, and some
underlying engineering - evolving the CS products remains demanding and
difficult.

Over the years, ID's book-publishing features have gone from non-existent to
nearly-equal to FM's book features. ID's electronic-publishing features have
evolved greatly because of intense competition.

The point is that, even with a sufficient development budget, advancing ID's
more-flexible engineering model, takes resources, and takes time.

Adobe's long-time resistance to re-engineering FM's underlying technology, so
it can evolve more efficiently, is more than disappointing. Repeating

OK, I think I misunderstood what you were trying to tell me, for which I
apologize.
Let me see if I understand now.
Adobe had to put a lot of effort into redesigning the menu/toolbar icons so
that they'd work properly on high-resolution screens. It didn't have the
resources to create those icons in both color and the Adobe "unicolor" standard
if it wanted to add other features and to fix bugs, so it decided to go with
the corporate standard interface so that those resources could be applied to
adding features and fixing bugs.
Do I have it now?
If so, I'm going to have to heave a heavy sigh of disappointment, because I
can't really argue with the decision. I'd put bug fixing at the top of the list
of priorities myself. I'm just sorry I don't currently have the opportunity to
take advantage of the high resolution icons. (My home laptop is 6 years old,
but I got a top of the line gaming rig so it isn't practical or necessary to
replace it yet

I understood this, Lin.

That's why I wrote:

We will discuss this over the next weeks internally and explore the
possibilities to satisfy the wishes from both user groups – those who like the
colored icons and those who prefer uni-colored icons.

The change to make FrameMaker compatible with high-res / high-dpi, scalable
screens was a very heavy, but necessary and unavoidable investment. And the
decision for the icons was to focus on one "theme", based on Adobe internal
requirements, extensive market research, customer interviews and user feedback
and involved UI and UX experts.

Also, please understand, that due to huge the amount of icons (and every single
of them in multiple sizes) providing both uni-colored and multi-colored would
have been a substantial effort. Due to the changes in the UI technology all
icons had to be created from the scratch.
And after all we need to carefully balance between "cosmetic" dicersity and
other all the other important wishes and requirements from the community.

We all know how it is: When we invest now in colored icons because 33 users
have voted on a bug report that it is important for them, thousands of other
users will come and say: What the heck, why are you wasting your efforts on the
color of icons instead of bringing us feature a, b, c, d that we are asking for
since xy?

But don't get me wrong now, please. As I said, we appreciate the feedback from
the frameusers community. And we heard you loud and clear. And as I said we
will discuss it internally over the next weeks and explore what we can do to
make you as our core group of users happy :-)

I don't understand why providing that as an OPTION was taken away, since
that allowed those who like color or larger scale icons in the

interface in other Adobe products to have that.

I don't think anyone here is asking that the menu/toolbar interface be all
one way or all the other. We're asking that both ways be available, as they
were in FM2015, so that we can make a choice regarding how we prefer them.

Hi Yves,

MathFlow license is independent of the FrameMaker license. That is, if you have
used it before as a trial (e.g. in FM 2015), it's likely that your trial of
MathFlow has expired even before you installed FM 2017.

Please contact Design Science regarding this:

preferences and tastes. We will discuss this over the next weeks internally and
explore the possibilities to satisfy the wishes from both user groups – those
who like the colored icons and those who prefer uni-colored icons.

By the way, my personal take on this is: I like the uni-color design and prefer
it over the colored icons. I like it, because it's more calm and allows me to
focus more on the content and get less distracted by a big bunch of
"candy-colored" icons (yes, Matt Sullivan, I know … ;-)).
I'm just used to this style as I also work every day in PhotoShop, Illustrator
and InDesign as well. And I'm used to it, as many modern apps, tools, systems
all have this kind of design. I just like it and it's for sure a personal
preference.
By the way, I work with FrameMaker intensively for more than 20 years and have
pushed out several million of pages and went through all the UI changes over
the last ten product generations. And personally I think the new FM 2017 UI is
the best FrameMaker ever had – in terms of logical enhancements and
restructuring, terminology enhancements and consistency, user-friendliness and
productivity enhancements and technical advancements (I'm running FM on a
modern high-dpi screen and LOVE the crystal clear, sharp UI and text editing).
But again, that's just my personal 2 cents as a hardcore and long-term user ;-)
