[Framers] Script/ to sort files in a FrameMaker book file?
We create our book files by dragging "bunches" of files from Windows Explorer onto the book file. This works excellent, only... we need a method to sort the files in the FrameMaker book file in the right order. The chapters have names like "100_spareparts.fm", "102_spareparts.fm", "204_spareparts.fm" and being able to sort by numbers/alphabetically would be a great bonus. [Framers] Controlling windows behaviour with Hypertext in FM2019
I want to insert an image with a hypertext link to www.domain.com. I can do that using Insert Hypertext Command. When published to html and opened in a browswer, that will work ok. However, I would also like the browser to open in the SAME window, rather than open a new window each time. Is it possible using hypertext to control the windows behaviour? I have tried using the FrameMaker Project feature on several projects. But my experience was every time, that it was of little use. * First of all - one cannot undo (Ctrl Z). * There are no options to display images with thumbnails or text files with previews. * All url's are getting truncated, making it impossible figure out where things are, unless you use "Explore". [Framers] Nostalgia - was Re: FrameMaker 2015
I followed Ventura all the way from the early versions on floppy disks to the latest Corel Version 10. And some trip that was. Corel took a great piece of software and made one exceptional poor and unstable version after another and for each version loosing even more users. And then... finally version 10, which was super stable, super advanced and came with database publishing and a bunch of other nice tools. All of which worked wonderfully. Only there was no users left to buy thing! [Framers] Framemaker 2017 won't exit structured mode
I am running FrameMaker 2017 and I can't make it exit Structured mode. I change the setting to unstructured in preferences, but it just doesn't stick. When I restart FrameMaker I am still in Structured mode. Can anybody help? [Framers] Breaking tables across pages?
Running FM 2015 and I cannot make FrameMaker break tables across pages. It should be simple... Insert cursor -->Table-> Format -> Row Format -> Break table. Nothing happens. Can't figure it out. Aaah... First things that goes blind are truely the eyes! Thanks a lot for the fast help! When I create a blank document in FrameMaker 11, I would expect to see predefined Running HF system variables in the Variables Pod, but they are not there. Do I really have to build them myself or are they merely hidden or do I not look in the right place? Try viewing the master page (instead of the body page). In FrameMaker 2015 (and I believe earlier), the Running H/F variables appear in the Variables pod only when viewing the master page. [Framers] Generating TOC in chinese
Hi I am running FrameMaker 12 and have some trouble generating a chinese TOC. The font is SimHei and it is simplified chinese. Most of the TOC seems to work ok, but some headlines come out like this: "openXmlElementId ../../../../../../Manual/FM filer/AQUA/R02 - Chinese/Aqua Blue HW - Chinese R02.fm:<$UniqueXmlElementId<$RelativeXmlElementId" I can't figure out what is amiss. It seems that it should not be a font issue - but then what is it? Can anybody please help? [Framers] import xml into FrameMaker 12?
I have a customer asking me to convert and publish xml files into FrameMaker 12. I usually do a lot of stuff in FrameMaker Unstructured (I have the Technical Communication Suites), but my knowledge of structured publish is less solid. I would like to be able to help my customer out on this. Is there a good introduction as to how to get started using structured FrameMaker? Or can anybody offer advice as to how to handle the xml files. Win 10 is okay in most respects, but some software won't run as expected. I used for instance WSftp, a nice ftp software, but it will not work properly unless updated. [Framers] Best way to replace one template with another without using plugins?
What is the best way to replace on template with another using only FrameMaker 12? Can it be done bookwide? As of now I manually delete all tags and formats and do an Import Formats, and it works, but it is cumbersome and prone to errors. Can it be done otherwise? [Framers] where are graphic frame names on reference pages in FM12?
Hi I am trying to make some course material and was suddenly confused. When I make a graphic frame on the reference pages in FrameMaker 10 I am prompted to give it a name. When I click Object Properties on the new frame afterwards I can see the name I gave the graphic frame. When I try to do the same in FrameMaker 12 I am still prompted to give the frame a name. When I click Object Properties however, I can no longer see the name of the frame. What am I doing wrong here? Where is the name of the frame? customize what symbols go into the Symbols button on the menu bar in FM 12?
The nice Symbols button on the menu bar will per default have Bullet Character, Plus/minus, Double Dagger etc. Is it possible to customize the selection of symbols? Running FrameMaker 12, here. FrameMaker 12 publish feature
I have just bought and installed FrameMaker 12 and have been playing around with the publish feature. I would like to publish some manuals to epub, but I just can't seem to make it work properly. When I publish to epub: - all embedded pictures disappear - czech characters disappear - tables and the text and pictures in them disappear There doesn't seem to be any way to handle font settings or character map settings in the settings dialogue. Publish to other formats like html etc is only marginally better. Am I missing something here? No. I believe Adobe stopped the series with version 9 unfortunately. But I think you can use version 9 for unstructured training anyway. I need to generate a list of paragraph tag properties used in a document. I know how to generate a list of paragraph tags, but is there also a way to make FrameMaker generate a description of the properties used in each paragraph tag? setting up technical documentation workflow from scratch
I am about to author a small report on setting up a technical documentation workflow from scratch. I need to devise a setup where a group of author can write tech docs, another group maintain and translate the docs and publish them as pdf. It is vital that the process can be thought within a technogy which allows for later integration with publishing to web as well. I have taken a look at Woodwings serverbased solution which uses InDesign as publishing frontend, but I would like to see whether I can accomplish the same using FrameMaker. I suppose I must look for a kind of database drive solution where the authors write into a database. I have taken a look on a couple of database publishing solutions: Patternstream, Sabern, FrameMaker Server but some of these solutions looks strangely dated when one merely looks at their websites. Sabern uses product images from FrameMaker 5.5. Patternstream recommends in FrameMaker 8 in a news release dated 2007. Adobes documentation for FrameMaker Server seems to be non existent - even a tutorial links to some very quaint and useless course on a server not even belonging to Adobe. My question is: Am I looking in the wrong places? It is vital that the process can be thought within a technogy which allows for later integration with publishing to web as well. I have taken a look at Woodwings serverbased solution which uses InDesign as publishing frontend, but I would like to see whether I can accomplish the same using FrameMaker. I suppose I must look for a kind of database drive solution where the authors write into a database. I have taken a look on a couple of database publishing solutions: Patternstream, Sabern, FrameMaker Server but some of these solutions looks strangely dated when one merely looks at their websites. Sabern uses product images from FrameMaker 5.5. Patternstream recommends in FrameMaker 8 in a news release dated 2007. Adobes documentation for FrameMaker Server seems to be non existent - even a tutorial links to some very quaint and useless course on a server not even belonging to Adobe. My question is: Am I looking in the wrong places? Can somebody reccommend products which will help me streamline the process? regards Jakobsen
FrameMaker 9 slow and sometimes unresponsive?
Am I the only one to find that FrameMaker 9 is slow and sometimes unresponsive. I run Win 7/64bit and has vast amounts of RAM, but nevertheless it takes FrameMaker lots of time saving documents and sometimes using shortcuts just plainly stops working. I am right now writing some course material on FrameMaker 9 and slowly discovers the good and the bad. I really hate the new Paragraph Designer - what happend to the tabbed interface? Everything else has become tabbed only not what is used exensively. insert generated list - TOC in content file
I need to make a framemaker file with a toc in the same file as the content. And I need to be able to update the toc. Normally I would have my toc as a standalone file inserted in the book file, but that won't do this time. I need to have the generated list in the content file itself. How do I do this trick ? I need to make spanish manual, but was puzzled to discover that there was no spanish language support. When i open the paragraph designer I have support for: English, Nihongo, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean. There has to be other languages as well - how do I find them ? I have a bunch of FrameMaker 7 book files which I need to move from a network drive to a local drive. This means that all file paths which reads for instance Y:manual/version01/manual.fm now has to be updated to a new file path which might read as: C:Manuals/new/manual.fm. I can solve this by converting the book files to mif and use a text editor to search and replace text strings, but it is enormously cumbersome. There has to be an easier way - but how? Can anybody help? I need to check some thousand framemaker files for newer versions of imported graphics. Each framemaker file has one imported graphic and each framemaker file bears the name of that imported graphic. The graphics are named consecutively, so that if a newer version exists it is named with a higher number. I would like to be able to find some elegant way of checking these files for newer graphics. Is there a plugin that would facilitate this work or might it be done using scripting ?
