Re: [Framers] FrameMaker variable language

2017-11-06 Thread louisek
Hi Art -

The translation company I used to work for had a Trados department that would
create an extra file (we called it the ancil, but I think it's the same as the
variable file Alison mentioned) that contained all the autonumbering and
variable text that's used in the Frame files. The translator would translate
the text, if needed, or choose what was already in the translation memory. Then
the translator would send all files back, and the Trados dept. would combine
the ancil/variable file with the main Frame files so the correct translation
was in place, and would be consistent with any previous translation.

If you get a file where that type of translation is missing, you might ask the
client about it. The Trados dept. may just have neglected to combine the files.
The client would want the ancil/variable text used, for consistency. Also, if
they combine the ancil/variable with the main Frame files, it will save you
from having to manually import the text into each file, and possibly
overwriting previously approved text, as Winfried mentioned.

Something else: text on the Reference Pages does not get picked up in the ancil
file, and needs to be copied to a separate file or placed on the Body Pages to
be translated. Also, unless the table continuation variable marker is on the
Body Pages when it goes through translation (AND they use an ancil/variable
file), it wouldn't get translated either.

Hope this is helpful. I fear it's probably more than you wanted to know.

Hi,

Some years ago I had noticed that only those variables or cross-reference
formats or paragraph autonumbering definitions are imported in a
translation memory system (Trados) which are actually used in the document.
All those which are not used are not imported.
When you edit a variable which is not translated and then import
all variable definitions into another file, you might overwrite already
translated variable definitions in the other file.

I do not know, if this had changed. And it could be that some translation
memory systems handle this issue differently.

Best regards

Winfried

For next time, make sure the translators are given instructions to translate
the relevant variables in the variable file (you may need to specify the
specific variables) as well as any auto-numbering para formats that contain
words (eg, Chapter, Appendix, etc).

I always provide a specific variable file for the translators to use with
instructions on importing the variables into the book.

May be a novice question for you guys who work in translation, but it's new
to me.

I'm updating an already translated-into-Spanish document with some new
screen shots (I don't speak Spanish, so I'm not messing with the text at
all). The problem is that the variables, like the Table Continuation, are
coming in as English instead of Spanish.

How can I get it to read "continuado" instead of "continued," hopefully
without messing up my installation too much?

Quick update:

P
philippe
Zingoni on the TCS User's list was sure you could edit it from the
Variables list, so I tried again.

I played with it some more, and discovered there's a little "gotcha"
designed in.
You can't edit it (Table continuation) just by clicking the pencil icon in
the list like you can other variables.
First you have to insert it in a table title and highlight it. THEN you can
edit it!

2017-10-31 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Art,

You will have to edit the variable definitions and translate the literal
text to Spanish. You can then import the variable definitions from the one
document into the rest of the book (File > Import > Formats). You have to do
the same thing with the literal text in the autonumbers of paragraph
formats, as well as cross-reference formats. Please let me know if you need
some automation help with this. Thanks.
