RE: FM8 HTML output

2008-09-18 Thread Charlie Kyle
Judy,
It sounds like you need some help setting up the numbering of chapters,
headings, pages, and figures in your template. If you are in San Diego,
I think Matt Sullivan is in your area and my understanding is that he is
knowledgeable about FM and the TCS. His site is
http://www.grafixtraining.com/

If you have to go it alone then I think the Adobe FM7.0 Classroom in a
Book is a good resource. I had a great FM teacher in Boulder CO and we
used that book.

I'm in a similar boat in that I'm very familiar with RH, but less so
with FM. Are you importing FM8 files directly or importing by reference?
Importing by reference means your FM8 files stay synced with your HTML
output.

Two days ago I hooked up (imported by reference) an FM8 book to RH7
based on a PDF presentation from Kevin Siegal and a video by RJ Jacquez
(see below). I have most of the stuff working that I need and I am
trying to iron out the style mapping. I may wait to come back to this
project after I've taken Kevin Siegal's virtual training class.

Search for Kevin Siegal's presentation called Blurring the Production
Lines here:
http://www.stc.org/edu/55thConf/index.asp

Kevin Siegal's site is http://www.iconlogic.com/ I plan to take his
virtual training class called Integrating Adobe's Technical
Communication Suite on October 18.

RJ Jacquez, Adobe Product Manager, has a training video on getting
started with TCS. Its located at
https://admin.adobe.acrobat.com/_a295153/p13101233/ I've gone thru this
a couple times and made a how doc from it.

I'm getting grief from my manager because he said that he thought TCS
was supposed to be integrated. He's half joking, but the additional time
its taking me to figure this out from sources outside the user doc is
messing up my schedule. Its too bad the product documentation from Adobe
does not adequately cover the integration of FM and RH.

One last thing. When the sys reqs for TCS say Intel(r) Pentium(r) 4
processor, they mean it. After a series of daily crashes, I'm upgrading
my 1.5 GHz Pentium machine with 2 GB RAM to 2.8ghz p4 Dual Core
processor with 2 GB RAM.

Good luck and stay in touch,

Charlie Kyle

I'm trying to do the same thing. I've used RH for years, but I'm new to

I've finally gotten *most* of the unstructured FM functionality down and
I'm moving my doc set into TCS. I'd be more than willing to share

I began with 1 shorter chapters (less than 100 pgs.) and was able to
import them by copy to FM8 and tweak the formatting. I was also able to
successfully add those by reference to RH.(At least I got topic files in
RH.
I haven't fiddled with the TOC and index.)

Last week I attempted a much larger chapter and RH doesn't recognize it
as a valid FM file. I found a thread in the user forum that said
there's a file size limit. If I remember correctly, their experience
was that 25MB would work. I've had 15MB files go unrecognized.

I went back into FM and learned a lot about document properties and book
settings, and am in the process of trying to work around that size
limit.

I was trying to include numbered chapters, headings, figures, and pages.
I can do it successfully in 1 continuous *.fm file, but I have trouble
if I have to break it into smaller files. I can get the page numbers to
run consecutively, but heading, figure and table numbers restart with
each new fm file!

I think I may be able to further decrease my file size by entering the
images by reference too, but that will take way more time than I have
before my release deadline in early Dec.. (Did I mention I'm a lone
writer and have to start writing the new content now?! This is a major
leap of faith!)

Does anyone out there have any ideas?

Judy

We are going to translate our FM books into several languages. We use
unstructured Framemaker.

Right now our directory structure looks as follows:

Language folder
 - Text insets (corporate) (disclaimer, warranty, eula, terms of use)
 - Graphics (corporate) (logo, IVD, CE)
 - Text insets (product-specific)
- Product manual folder
  - Framemaker files
  - PDF files
  - Graphics (language specific)
  - Graphics (product generic)

Do you have a suggestion of how to handle the translation process? I know
that the translators are to use a tag editor and that the files are to go
into Trados.

I suggest that the Framemaker files are converted to .mif and that the same
folder structure is created in each language. I also suggest that we keep
the same file names for graphics in all languages.

How do you handle

I am in the midst of hooking up a FM8 book to RH7. I'm following the
instructions from RJ Jacquez demo at
https://admin.adobe.acrobat.com/_a295153/p13101233/ This seems to be the
only source of information from Adobe on how to do this.

I'm importing the book by reference into an existing RH7 project and
then going thru a reiterative process to fine tune stuff like style maps
and xref styles. I was completely baffled by how get the FM TOC and
Index associated with the Help project. As I was writing this email, I
remembered a presentation by Kevin Siegal that I downloaded from the STC
2008 Conference web site. In there, I just found out that the TOC and
Index have to be assigned to a RH layout.

Caution! Small Digression: This process is reminding me of when I used
to try to play Dungeons and Dragons from a VAX command line prompt. This
was BI (Before Internet) when we had more time for such things and Games
weren't part of the GNP :-)

Does anyone know of a source for some information about hooking up FM8
books to RH7?

Thanks,
Charlie Kyle

If, along with FM, you have a need to keep Acrobat, Captivate or
RoboHelp licenses current then the TCS is hard to beat.

Along with the 4 apps is extra integration beyond HTM or Help outputs.
Put Flash movies & simulations along with working 3D models into FM and
output to the needed PDF or Help format.

TCS 1.x is a bit finicky in setup and can have a 5-10 hour learning
curve on the first project, but has a huge return on investment after
setup.

Currently there are only a few folks who can help with support outside
Adobe. If you need help, let me know. If anyone else out there is
working at a high level in this, let me (& Adobe) know and we can trade
notes.

2008-09-16 Thread Yves Barbion
Better news is also that the new ePublisher platform (2008.2) has improved A
LOT:

   - Better UI
   - Good DITA support (with the DITA Open Toolkit integrated)
   - Better documentation (Help) and a wealth of valuable information on the
WebWorks site (videos, wiki Help Center...)
   - The ability to handle "mixed content" as input: not only "unstructured"
FrameMaker files, but also DITA maps and even W*rd files. Surely, only 1
"input adapter" is included when you buy ePublisher and you have buy the
additional ones, but at least you have this option.
   - Better configuration: 1 ePublisher Pro to design "stationery" (style
sheets) and a number of ePublisher Express licenses to generate output,
   using the stationery.
   - A number of "themes" included by default.

So, Bruce, if you develop templates for the writers of your techpubs group,
I think the new ePublisher platform is well worth the investment.
Admittedly, you'll have to redesign your ePublisher "templates", but you'll
get a lot in return. And the tech writers can use Express and your
stationery to generate their output.

You can always request an evaluation version and compare it with MIF2Go
(which is great too) and RoboHelp.

OK, I've got bad news, worse news, and then better news for you. :-)

Bad: WebWorks Publisher is long dead. You'd have to switch to its
replacement, ePublisher Pro.

Worse: ePublisher Pro is very different from WWP -- an xml-based
solution with a non-trivial learning curve. Your WWP macro language
skills don't transfer. Old WWP licenses no longer qualify for an upgrade
price. And it costs an arm and a leg.

Better: If you have to buy new FM licenses anyway, you should seriously
consider the Adobe Technical Communication Suite instead. It includes
versions of FM and RoboHelp that are tightly integrated (or so I'm told;
we're still looking into it here, but are likely to upgrade to the suite
soon).

IMHO, YMMV, etc.

FM8 HTML output

2008-09-15 Thread Charlie Kyle

If anyone else out there is
working at a high level in this, let me (& Adobe) know and we can trade
notes.

Kevin and I presented that 2-day session together...the FM to RH details
were on my day (day 2)

I give a 2-day class on the process, but actually do more initial setup for
clients to refine mappings & get the CSS in order.

RJ, Kevin, me. Those are the only resources the 3 of us know of right
now...anyone else out there?

What Richard said is accurate, but you may also want to investigate
MIF2go, a third party add in from omsys.com that would support both FM
versions and should generate like output from either.

Best: ;-) Check out Mif2Go; at $295, it's about 1/10 the
price of ePP, and 1/3 the price of the TCS. It generates
very clean HTML, XML, DITA, DocBook, and numerous Help
formats (including Eclipse Help and OHJ; more outputs than
any of the other options, in fact). It also produces Word
files that look remarkably like the Frame files from which
they were made, handy for reviewers who only use Word.

The free unlimited demo version is at:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm

And Mif2Go comes with the best free support in the industry;
who else fixes bugs on the spot (not "in the next version"),
and adds features you ask for overnight? See the history.txt
file there for numerous examples of those enhancements, with
the names of those who asked for them. ;-)

FM8 HTML output

2008-09-12 Thread bruce.macart...@vsea.com
Hello All,
I am new to the Framers group.
I develop the templates for the tech pubs group at my work. I have spent a
lot of time creating and maintaining templates and macros for WebWorks.
Several of our writers need to upgrade FM. I can't purchase FM7.2. This
would require the writers to upgrade to FM8. I purchased an upgrade to FM8
and can't figure out how to generate the HTML (or XML) outputs that would
look like what I produced with WebWorks. Since FM8 does not come with WW
standard, we would have to purchase a WW seat from Quadralay at great
expense. This forces us to make a decision on whether to stay with FM or
change to another application.

Is there a way to import templates and macros from WW?
Is there a way to define the HTML / XML page layout to include the banners
and navigation that WW created?

Please help me to figure this out so that I can make an informed decision
on the future.

Thank You,
