RE: Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-10-01 Thread Michael O'Neill
Vivek Jain @ Adobe discusses single-sourcing with RoboHelp and
FrameMaker on the Adobe Technical Communication blog:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/

At the same time, you manage the content from FrameMaker files in a set
of special folders, providing you the flexibility of continuously
updating the content as you edit the files in FrameMaker.

To make the workflow smoother, RoboHelp provides a visual indicator of
whether the content in RoboHelp is out of synchronization with
FrameMaker content or not.

This is looking interesting. Anyone know of a good listserv devoted to
discussing RoboHelp?

What percentage of the FrameMaker audience do you think is waiting

Sorry, I cannot resist to tell you, that *if* you can come up with an
algorithm for that »problem« of yours, it can be solved today using
API programming or scripting. FrameMaker allows overrides to the size
and position of text frames on every single page and you can
therefore control how many lines appear.

RE: Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-09-26 Thread Richard Levine
Hi Michael

I see your what you mean by saying that the Adobe TCS being analogous to the
Frame/WebWorks combination. It overcomes FrameMaker's limitations through
the use of a non-integrated, third party enhancement, in this case RoboHelp,
for multi-channel output. RoboHelp now uses FrameMaker files much in the
same manner as it uses Word files.

I cannot really say that round-tripping is what I am looking for. What I
would really like to see a fully integrated authoring environment that
integrates multi-channel output with a powerful editor that overcomes
FrameMaker's many limitations, thus obviating the need for import and
export. AuthorIT does this with some limitations, and Blaze (still
vaporware) promises to provide such functionality.

My question then becomes: Why should I purchase the TCS bundle if all it
offers is a WebWorks replacement?

RoboHelp is a full featured HAT with printed output (PDF) support. Why not
just import my legacy Frame documents into RoboHelp, and then use RoboHelp
as my authoring environment?

Richard Levine

Hi Richard,

I'd like to understand what you exactly mean with two-way round- tripping
and why you need that. I always thought of multi-channel publishing as
single-source publishing with a stress on single
and having easy production paths into PDF and Online Help. Therefore the
only thing (I thought) I need is a live connect to the source documents. Why
would I want to make changes in the originals during the Online Help
production phase?

 No, it's more than that.

It is a connection to the original FrameMaker book or document very
much like good ol' WebWorks Publisher provided it. If you change your
FrameMaker documents, this will be reflected in your RoboHelp output,
 if you want so.
But you can do local changes, if you like breaking your single-source

Check it out! Very much like I couldn't believe we would see

 integration with RoboHelp.

Great news!

This seems to me to be the official stamp of Adobe finally
acknowledging FrameMaker for what it is first and foremost: the best
all-over technical publication workhorse.

IMHO it only remains for Adobe to realise that FM is also one of the
best tools for regular book layout, except for one factor: Foreign
language support is very little. Only a few languages are really
supported. So therefore the vast majority are using Quark and
InDesign.

But congratulations, Adobe; congratulatios Framedome.

the first time, technical communicators can easily update their online
help systems with information authored in FrameMaker 8, without the
need to re-import files for each update. The new release also adds
Unicode support for publishing in multiple languages.

Automated wizards and topic templates allow users to incorporate
standard and advanced help features, including table of contents,
indexes, glossaries, graphics, sound, video, simulations and
navigation. Authors can generate multiple tables of content and apply
conditional tags, index items, folders, and tailor output for specific
purposes and formats, such as HTML, Adobe PDF and FlashHelp(R).
RoboHelp 7 also supports a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) allowing
easy copy and paste editing across topics. Additional new features
include an updated and customizable user interface, enhancements to
the HTML editor, and improved navigation and search features. For more
 details please visit www.adobe.com/products/robohelp.

Launched in July 2007, FrameMaker 8 is a complete authoring and
publishing tool that combines the simplicity of word processing with
the power of XML. The new version adds support for 3D, DITA, XML and
Unicode. With the integration of Adobe Captivate 3 technical authors
can deliver high-impact information with quizzes, visual product
demonstrations and simulations - all without the need for multimedia
development skills. Acrobat 3D version 8 delivers a complete and more
secure way to collaborate with extended teams on 3D designs via Adobe
PDF documents. Technical communicators can easily manipulate and

RE: Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-09-25 Thread Michael O'Neill
I wondered the same thing. From what it looks like to me, RoboHelp
supports Framemaker in that it imports .fm and .mif files. Since they
don't list Frame as a supported authoring environment, it doesn't look
like it is heavily integrated (/assumption).

Here's what I gleaned off the website:

Support for Adobe FrameMaker 8 (Enhanced)

Import multiple Adobe FrameMaker(r) files (MIF and FM) at one time with
tables of contents, indexes, and glossaries. Apply conditional build
tags or user-defined variables to content before importing or when it's
time to publish. Map FrameMaker styles to RoboHelp styles when importing
MIF files. Repurpose FrameMaker content for HTML publishing on import
and use Topic Alias Markers to identify context-sensitive help.
   http://www.adobe.com/products/robohelp/productinfo/features/

Which authoring environment does RoboHelp 7 support other than the
built-in HTML editor?
RoboHelp 7 supports Adobe Dreamweaver(r) CS3; Macromedia(r)
Dreamweaver 8 from Adobe; Microsoft FrontPage 2003; HomeSite 5.5; and
Microsoft Word 2007, Word 2003, Word 2002, and Word 2000.
http://www.adobe.com/products/robohelp/productinfo/faq/

Does RoboHelp 7 integrate with FrameMaker?
You can import FrameMaker 8 MIF and FM files with style mapping,
conditional tags, user-defined variables, and Captivate content intact.
Additional RoboHelp 7 and FrameMaker integration can be experienced
through new Adobe Technical Communication Suite software, which includes
RoboHelp 7, FrameMaker 8, Captivate 3, and Adobe Acrobat(r) 3D Version 8
software.

According to Adobe's web site, RH 7 integration is one-way
.fm or .mif file import. If this is true, it is not
 integration in my book.

Nor is it any sort of improvement on the pre-Adobe versions, which
imported MIF files at least since X5, if not before then

Doesn't seem like much of an integration, and certainly isn't
single-sourcing given you can't round-trip the RH content back to FM.
It's a repurposing solution.

No, it's more than that.

It is a connection to the original FrameMaker book or document very
much like good ol' WebWorks Publisher provided it. If you change your
FrameMaker documents, this will be reflected in your RoboHelp output,
if you want so. But you can do local changes, if you like breaking
your single-source workflow.

Check it out! Very much like I couldn't believe we would see
FrameMaker with Unicode I was surprised to see that level of
integration with RoboHelp.

Re: Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-09-25 Thread Yves Barbion
Great! I think the Tech Com suite is definitely a move in the right
direction. I would add Photoshop and Illustrator to that suite as well.

I'm wondering whether this can be done:

   * Author and maintain DITA content in FrameMaker.
   * Import the ditamap instead of the FM book file into the RoboHelp
 Project.
   * Generate WebHelp or FlashHelp.

Of course, with all the DITA bells and whistles (conrefs, reltables,
...) fully supported.

Kind regards

If round-tripping were a prerequisite for single-sourcing, then using
Acrobat Distiller and Webworks Publisher to create deliverables from
your FM files wouldn't qualify.

As Michael noted, the integration or whatever you call it seems to make
it unnecessary (although still possible) to make changes in RH after
importing the FM source. If that's true, then you can single-source.

Take a look at the FAQ
(http://www.adobe.com/products/technicalcommunicationsuite/faq/),
especially these questions:

- What does Technical Communication Suite offer technical communicators
and help authors that they don't already get with FrameMaker or
RoboHelp?

- Will RoboHelp 7 work with RoboHelp projects that have FrameMaker
source files added as links?

- Is there a difference between the standalone versions of RoboHelp 7,
FrameMaker 8, Acrobat 3D Version 8, and Captivate 3 and the software
versions included in Technical Communication Suite?

- What are the key benefits of Technical Communication Suite?

Note that the suite versions of FM8 and RH7 have unique features to
improve the workflow that are not included in the standalone versions.
If you just sprang for the standalone version of either or both, you may
want to whine to your Adobe representative about some kind of
(inexpensive) migration path. :-)

On the surface this would appear to be true, however Distiller and WWP
are not authoring environments. The FM files remain unaltered in those
models. That is, the single source is used. FM+RH is still repurposing
content from FM into RH then out to whatever output you choose, and
unless I'm missing something, if you make changes in RH to your
content, you can't repurpose the content back to FM.

That's true *if* you make changes in RH to your content -- but Adobe
seems to be saying (and Michael has confirmed) that you don't *need* to
make changes in RH (unlike in earlier versions).

IOW, you can use RH as an output engine, not an authoring tool, if you
choose to do so. At least, that seems to be the promise.

If the authoring in RH is _no_longer_necessary_ and you
_refrain_from_doing_it_ -- then, by golly, you're single sourcing.

@ support for bibliographies/citations (inc. Harvard and Chicago style)

@ a multifaceted cross-reference format that automatically adjusts for
the location of the target:
'see Table 9.2 opposite' // doublespread
'see Table 9.2 previous' // ref on L page pointing to prev R
'see Table 9.2 overleaf'' // ref on R page pointing to next L
'see Table 9.2 above' // same page

'see Table 9.2, 'Desirable features for FM', on page 167' //
far target

@ a proper indexing app built-in that shows real-time display of all

with similar existing entries, a thesaurus/taxonomy for
different subject

domains that similarly proposes candidate entries

@ in Indexes, automatic continuation entries when subentries break from
an R page to a following L, e.g.

canines (cont.)
breeds
recommended diet
exercise requirements

@ internal xrefs as hotlinks in PDFs, e.g.

dogs. See canines

@ automatic updating of index xrefs if target changes

@ as well as automatically associating graphic elements above and below
paragraphs, how about to the left or right and BEHIND the para?

Altogether now ...

What do we want?
ALL OF THE ABOVE

When do we want it?
FOUR RELEASES AGO

Given Frame Technologies' and Adobe's history of issuing releases with
minimal features for large upgrade fees, we can expect all of the above
to be implemented in ... let's count up ... release 22!
