Re: snapshot of table in FM for use as image in EPUB ebooks

2012-02-04 Thread rebecca officer
Hi Ray

Is your question about how to have both the snapshot and the original table in
your FM doc, but have webworks only use the snapshot?

If so, use conditional text. It was designed for stuff like that.

Feel free to ask if you need more info.

Re: snapshot of table in FM for use as image in EPUB ebooks

2012-02-04 Thread ray . lloyd
Hi Rebecca,
Basically I want Webworks to create the snapshot image of the table
automatically like it creates a thumbnail image of screenshots. All I need
to do that is put a marker on top of the image. So I've experimented with
frames and markers but it's not doing anything.
As you say, I could insert alternative images for the EPUB output and work
with conditions but this is too much effort for an extra output format
which is more of a novelty at the current time.

I'll be moving this to the backburner for the time being but any ideas are
still welcome. Yes, SVG would be nice but I would be happy with PNG ;)

Keep well,
Ray

2012-02-02 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
I think a screen capture is acceptable for this, but if you want to do a
really nice job you could figure out a way to convert it to a vector
graphic, such as SVG. (You need to find out what vector formats Webworks
works with.) One way to do this would be to print the table as a PDF,
open it in CorelDraw (10 or later) and save as SVG.

Re: ebooks from FM books - via robohelp or some other way?

2011-12-08 Thread Keith . Soltys
 Hi everyone

We've got multi-chapter documents where the source files are
unstructured
FM10 book files. We'd like to publish as epub files too.

What software are people using for that?

We've just played with Elmsoft's new EPubFm but it doesn't work on book
files, just standalone FM files. We don't have the resources to convert
to structured FM, and the books are format-heavy enough that
save-as-html
 looks crappy.

Adobe's marketing material shows FM with an epub option if you're using
FM and Robohelp from the Tech Comms Suite. We haven't got the suite -
does anyone know if you can get this FM option by just adding Robohelp
on
top of a standard FM installation?

Any advice or success stories gratefully accepted!

 Cheers
 Rebecca

If your books are format-heavy, then you may have problems. EPUB doesn't
handle complex formatting very well without a lot of tweaking, and things
like complex or nested tables may not work at all.

Also consider what devices your books will be viewed on. An EPUB book on a
10 tablet like an iPad is one thing; it's a very different proposition if
you're looking at it on a 6 E Ink reader like a Nook or Kindle, and even
more so on a smartphone with a 4 screen.

WebWorks ePublisher will work on a whole book or multiple files from a
book and links to your FM source files.

Keith

WebWorks ePublisher is beautiful to convert your content in an ePub (or
any other) format.

Do you like to see some samples (and statements about PDF will decrease
- currently in german) please look there:
http://bit.ly/sVAw8L at the end of this page you will find a link to
"Rezepte" page with all information and ePub samples
(from Word, FrameMaker or DITA source).

ebooks from FM books - via robohelp or some other way?

2011-12-06 Thread rebecca officer
Hi everyone

We've got multi-chapter documents where the source files are unstructured FM10
book files. We'd like to publish as epub files too.

What software are people using for that?

We've just played with Elmsoft's new EPubFm but it doesn't work on book files,
just standalone FM files. We don't have the resources to convert to structured
FM, and the books are format-heavy enough that save-as-html looks crappy.

Adobe's marketing material shows FM with an epub option if you're using FM and
Robohelp from the Tech Comms Suite. We haven't got the suite - does anyone know
if you can get this FM option by just adding Robohelp on top of a standard FM
installation?

Any advice or success stories gratefully accepted!

Cheers
Rebecca

RE: ebooks from FM books - via robohelp or some other way?

2011-12-06 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
As far as I know, you could do the FM to RH as an import without getting the
suite (the suite gives you the power to link), but the pricing's probably
better if you do the suite than just standalones.

Re: ebooks from FM books - via robohelp or some other way?

2011-12-06 Thread Scott Prentice
I'm pretty sure that you can link RH to FM even if you're not using TCS
.. download the trial and give it a test to see how it works for you.
Also Webworks ePublisher can export to EPUB.

Other less expensive options may be ..

- save the FM files to Word, then use Calibre to convert from RTF to EPUB
- save the FM files to PDF and use one of the many available converters
to go from PDF to EPUB

- save to RTF or DOC and open in Atlantis Word Processor then output to EPUB

A list of authoring tools and converters is available here ..

   http://www.epubtest.com/resources.php

YMMV.

ebooks from FM books - via robohelp or some other way?

2011-12-06 Thread Eichelberger, Mark
It did seem pretty straight forward. The project needed to be tweaked a bit
for tables and some bullet points to display properly in the epub output, but
other than that, it came across OK.

I've played around with it in WebWorks ePublisher, too. It seemed pretty simple.

Hi everyone

We've got multi-chapter documents where the source files are
unstructured FM10 book files. We'd like to publish as epub files too.

What software are people using for that?

We've just played with Elmsoft's new EPubFm but it doesn't work on book
files, just standalone FM files. We don't have the resources to convert to
structured FM, and the books are format-heavy enough that save-as-html looks
crappy.

Adobe's marketing material shows FM with an epub option if you're using
FM and Robohelp from the Tech Comms Suite. We haven't got the suite - does
anyone know if you can get this FM option by just adding Robohelp on top of a
standard FM installation?

Any advice or success stories gratefully accepted!

Cheers

Rebecca

If your books are format-heavy, then you may have problems. EPUB doesn't
handle complex formatting very well without a lot of tweaking, and things
like complex or nested tables may not work at all.

Also consider what devices your books will be viewed on. An EPUB book on a
10" tablet like an iPad is one thing; it's a very different proposition if
you're looking at it on a 6" E Ink reader like a Nook or Kindle, and even
more so on a smartphone with a 4" screen.

WebWorks ePublisher will work on a whole book or multiple files from a
book and links to your FM source files.

It would appear that EPUB standard involves an XML standard, in which case you
could very well use FrameMaker in Structured mode.

If you end up having to switch from (presumably unstructured) FrameMaker, I'd
suggest switching not to InDesign but to DITA to accomplish your goals. You can
leverage your group's existing FM knowledge by still using FM to create your
PDFs, but with DITA you are no longer locked into one company's proprietary
format, and you can take advantage of newer technologies and deliverable types
in the future without having to change formats again.

Hi Rich,

You can use FrameMaker as your source files. You'll need to go through
ePublisher Pro or MIF2GO to get the output you want. It's non-trivial
(read, a huge PITA) to get everything working, but it can be done.

Here's some general information on ePub issues:

RE: eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker

2010-12-08 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Richard,

If you look at the EPUB datasheet PDF, you will see that EPUB is an
XML-based file format designed to reflow text according to screen size.
Since EPUB is XML-based, you should be able to produce output from
FrameMaker that can be converted to EPUB format. As far as tools, you can
look at Webworks EPublisher (I think that's what they call it now), or
possibly Mif2Go. If you are using structured FrameMaker, you may be able to
use XSLT to transform your documents to the EPUB format.

I am sure there is more to it than I am describing, but my point is that you

eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker

2010-12-08 Thread Sarah O'Keefe
Hi Rich,

You can use FrameMaker as your source files. You'll need to go through
ePublisher Pro or MIF2GO to get the output you want. It's non-trivial
(read, "a huge PITA") to get everything working, but it can be done.

Here's some general information on ePub issues:
http://www.scriptorium.com/2010/09/how-to-succeed-in-epub-building-with-really-trying/

Good luck. If you decide you want professional help (hmmm...that
sounds bad), give us a call.

It would appear that EPUB standard involves an XML standard, in which case you
could very well use FrameMaker in Structured mode.

eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker

2010-12-08 Thread Shane Taylor
If you end up having to switch from (presumably unstructured) FrameMaker, I'd
suggest switching not to InDesign but to DITA to accomplish your goals. You can
leverage your group's existing FM knowledge by still using FM to create your
PDFs, but with DITA you are no longer locked into one company's proprietary
format, and you can take advantage of newer technologies and deliverable types
in the future without having to change formats again.

Hi

TCS2 supports ePub output now. We just released a script. More details are
available at our blog
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2010/04/robohelp_script_to_generate_epub_format_content_for_mobile_d.html

In nutshell- single source FM files, link them through RoboHelp in TCS and
convert to any help format including ePub.

Hi Diana,

We were discussing this very thing at the Adobe booth at STC this week...

The consensus was that you will want a tool that converts your FM content
into XHTML (I recommend using the TCS2 workflow to link FM docs into
RoboHelp for XHTML output)

You'll then use a tool like Calibre (OpenSource) to convert into an ePub
format.

TCS2 supports ePub output now. We just released a script. More details are
available at our blog
http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2010/04/robohelp_script_to_generate_epub_format_content_for_mobile_d.html

In nutshell- single source FM files, link them through RoboHelp in TCS and
convert to any help format including ePub.

Thanks
Mahesh

Hi Diana,

We were discussing this very thing at the Adobe booth at STC this week...

The consensus was that you will want a tool that converts your FM content
into XHTML (I recommend using the TCS2 workflow to link FM docs into
RoboHelp for XHTML output)

You'll then use a tool like Calibre (OpenSource) to convert into an ePub
format.

Hi Diana...

This may not be exactly what you're looking for .. but I've been successful
at using the dita4publishers DITA-OT plugin to convert DITA content
(authored in FM or other XML editors) to the ePub format.
If you'd like more info on this, let me know.

Cheers,
