RE: How do you get fractions in FM 12?

2014-12-10 Thread Grant Hogarth

Use the Character Tool to see if your font provides true fractions.
If not, find a font that looks like yours that does, and then create a character definition that uses that font.
Then just apply the character tag to the correct character.

Re: How do you get fractions in FM 12?

2014-12-09 Thread Ed Nodland
Tom, I found this list of unicode characters online at
http://symbolcodes.tlt.psu.edu/bylanguage/mathchart.html#fractions

The problem is there is not a special character for all possible fractions.
So if you intermix the styles in the same sections and have 3-3/16 with 4⅔
it becomes more confusing.

You can also reduce the font size and manually adjust the position
by selecting the text and using ALT+ArrowKeys, e.g. move a small 3 up /
move a small 16 down, for a nice looking 3/16.

Re: How do you get fractions in FM 12?

2014-12-09 Thread Patrick Edwards

If you're using a typeface that has these glyphs, you can use the
superscript 0-9, subscript 0-9, and fraction slash to build fractions.
This eliminates some of the pain of changing font sizes and positioning,
and the fractions you build look exactly the same as the thirds,
fourths, and eighths glyphs.

Email I sent to my department:

Fractions available as complete glyphs are listed for copying and
pasting. New fractions not present as glyphs can be composed as needed
using the fraction parts. All parts are inserted as Unicode code points
using File  Utilities  Character Palette:

numerators: superscript zero through superscript nine (Unicode U+2070,
U+00B9, U+00B2, U+00B3, and U+2074 through U+2079)
denominators: subscript zero through nine (Unicode U+2080 through
U+2089)
fraction slash (Unicode U+2044)

Text I added to Reference page in template file:

The following fraction glyphs can be inserted using an Alt+numpad key
combination: ¼ Alt0188; ½ Alt0189; ¾ Alt0190
The following fraction glyphs can be inserted via the character palette
or by copying and pasting: ⅓ ⅔ ⅛ ⅜ ⅝ ⅞
The following fractions are composed of parts; insert via copying and
pasting: ¹⁄₁₆ ³⁄₁₆ ⁵⁄₁₆ ⁷⁄₁₆ ⁹⁄₁₆ ¹¹⁄₁₆ ¹³⁄₁₆ ¹⁵⁄₁₆
The following fraction parts can be used to compose new fractions;
insert by copying and pasting: ¹²³⁴⁵⁶⁷⁸⁹⁰ ⁄ ⁄ ⁄ ₁₂₃₄₅₆₇₈₉₀

Create fractions on the fly?

2011-12-09 Thread VLM TechSubs
Hi everyone,

Running FrameMaker 8 on Win 7 SP1 x64 and on Win XP SP3.

I use a lot of diagonal fractions, like ½ instead of 1 / 2 (spaces added for
effect). But of
course, the standard set of fractions included in most fonts, even those with
“extended
fractions” such as 1/8, 3/8, etc. is minimal. (You can likely see that my
present font does not
provide such fractions. But this is just email. :) So …

1. Does FM support the use of OpenType fonts, and if so, beginning with what FM
version?

1.a. If “yes”, then does anyone have suggestions as to what OpenType fonts or
foundries provide
excellent support for diagonal fractions?

2. Does anyone know of a tool that enables creation of arbitrary diagonal
fractions AS
CHARACTERS on the fly. (I’ve found tools that create graphics, but of course
those of are of
limited use. See, for example,
http://www.homeschoolmath.net/worksheets/equation_editor.php,
link at the bottom.)

3. Can I use the FM equation editor to achieve this goal? What to read to learn
how? And will
such fractions, created in FM, carry over elsewhere (Word, Outlook/Thunderbird,
Excel, etc.)?

4. What about when working in Word? (I’m thinking of creating a fraction in
one, then carrying
it over to the other, either direction.)

5. Other suggestions/approaches/observations/thoughts?

Thank you kindly,
Elchanan

Though FrameMaker doesn't directly make use of OpenType features-- i.e.
you can't type 2/3 and have it convert automatically to a proper
fraction-- it does understand unicode. So if you have a font that
includes numerators and denominators, you can use Character Map to copy

There are also fraction fonts you can buy, that let you enter fractions
using particular keystrokes. The only problem I've found with them is
that the typeface is often substantially different from the surrounding
body text, making them noticeable.

You can also find a method of using variables to create fractions here:

a way to generate fractions without just writing them like I am here (

apply a character format to them that uses the appropriate fraction font,

Some of the Pro fonts include Unicode font numerators, denominators, and

have FM8. Again, you'll have to apply a character format to them, unless the
font is the same one used for the whole paragraph. Mike Wickham

Hi Joel,

You can try one of the fractions fonts available from Adobe. OpenType
and PostScript versions are both available.

http://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/html/index.cfm?store=OLS-USevent=displayFontPackagecode=234

These fonts allow you to type the numerator and denominator independently.

Best regards,

If one wants to have a look at the character map of any font or compare
available characters in different fonts (say before deciding on which font
to use, etc.), the character map can be accessed from Start Menu -- All
Programs -- Accessories -- System Tools -- Character Map.

And as we can see in the attached screenshot its easily possible (after
checking advanced view and selecting Number Forms category) to check for the
available fractions in various fonts.

One method is to buy any of the various fraction fonts available. Go to
myfonts.com or other font seller and search for fractions. Yes, you still
have to enter them by typing the individual characters, but they will be
properly sized and kerned. You'll have to apply a character format to them
that uses the appropriate fraction font, or they may display as other
characters, based on the paragraph format.

Some of the Pro fonts include Unicode font numerators, denominators, and
fraction slash. You can copy and paste them from Character Map, since you
have FM8. Again, you'll have to apply a character format to them, unless the
font is the same one used for the whole paragraph.

Re: Expressing Fractions with Offset Numbers and Division Symbols

2006-07-11 Thread Rick Quatro
First of all, you should use the fraction slash by typing Control+q Shift+z.
Then you can apply character formats to the numerator and denominator. The
numerator format will use the Superscript position and the denominator
format will use the Subscript position. You set the specifications for
superscript and subscript globally in a document by using Format Document
 Text Options.

The problem comes if you have other superscripted and subscripted characters
in the document that should have different sizes or positions. However, this
limitation can be overcome with FrameScript.

Here are some other solutions: You can buy dedicated fraction fonts from
Adobe, Monotype, and others. They will usually match a particular typeface;
for example, Helvetica Fractions matches Helvetica.

Or, if you use a typeface that has a corresponding Expert set, you can use
the Expert font for the fractions. For example, I have Plantin, which has an
expert font called Alt Figures. It contains each number in both numerator
and denominator sizes and positions. The advantage to these numbers is that
their weight is boosted so that don't look lighter than the surrounding
characters, even though they are smaller. Its fraction slash is accessed by
typing a normal forward slash.

Keeping fractions together

Hello:

How do I keep fractions and mixed numbers written in standard slash and
dash, e.g. 1/16" or 2-3/8", together when they wind up at the end of a line?

I'm aware of fraction fonts, but am hoping there's some way to add them to
the personal dictionary or otherwise get them on a spelling list without
changing the style in which they are typed.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you type the fractions, use a non-breaking hyphen (Esc hyphen h)
instead of a regular hyphen.
