RE: mouse alternative

2014-11-21 Thread Davis, David
I had horrible RSI in my mouse-clicking finger back in the bad-old-days of
mechanical mice.
Modern optical mice have made things a lot better, and I changed mouse-hands to
become ambi-mousetrous too, which all helped...

I've been using this Microsoft ergonomic keyboard and mouse for the past
year, I'm getting on pretty well with it.
The keyboard is sloped and has a gap in the middle, so your hands turn a bit
sideways rather than horizontal over the keys - it's a less stressful position.
The mouse is also kind of sideways, so your hand sits in a natural rest
position. Costs a bit more than ordinary ones, but I felt it was worth it.

RE: mouse alternative

2014-11-21 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Yeah! I have an older version of this keyboard - was called something else
(Microsoft Natural Wireless Keyboard or some such thing). This is at work where
I do most of my editing and typing and stuff.

My home keyboard is an old Dell standard one ... just an okay keyboard, but I
don't do a lot of editing on it (just using it now for example), so not too
painful.

I just bought a Kensington Expert Trackball based on recommendations here to
check out. Only one place (at home so far) so still getting used to it.
Surprisingly, going back and forth from home (trackball) to work (large
Microsoft mouse) is not proving too difficult - my hand memories are getting
trained to both. Sorta like the fact that I can drive on both sides of the road
(right here and left in UK).

Only one confusion ... I downloaded the software from Kensington, but it does
not allow me to set the upper left or upper keys. Or at least working the way I
have them set in the software. Thoughts and suggestions?

If anyone tries one of these, I'd be very interested to know how they get on

Re: mouse alternative

2014-11-11 Thread Mike Wickham
Even better, get a trackball. You rest your hand in place and only move
your thumb (plus occasionally click with a finger). Plus, you never run
into that PITA issue where your mouse goes off the edge of the mouse
pad, but you need to scroll further, so you have to lift the mouse, pull
it back toward you, and set it down to continue scrolling-- sometimes
multiple times. With a trackball, you only lift your thumb. (Or set the
scroll rate to encompass the whole screen in one thumb swipe.) I've been
using a trackball for years and would never go back to a mouse. Here are
a couple from Logitech. I use an older model similar to the M570:

I have been thinking of switching, but I need to find something relatively

At present, I use a small Microsoft Bluetooth mouse - wireless and fits well in

But, would like to try a trackpad - small for travel would be nice.

I've been using Kensington Expert Mouse trackballs for years. The
current model is optical. Very smooth, rarely needs cleaning. Comes
with an optional wrist support, which I use, my one complaint about
the product is that that tends to come loose. I have not found smaller
trackballs as easy to use.

I use them with Kinesis Freestyle 2 keyboards with the VIP3 lifter
attachment. I place the two parts of the keyboard about 6.5 apart.

http://www.ergonomicssimplified.com/products/images/keyboards/kinesis_freestyle_vip1.jpg

Using a laptop keyboard for any amount of time seems like a good way
to injure yourself. I can fit a Freestyle and Expert Mouse in my not
very large laptop backpack with room to spare.

mouse use. I just came across this device and thought I'd pass it
along. I have no other info on it, so can't offer a review.

Re: mouse alternative

2014-11-11 Thread Mike Wickham
I use my Wacom tablet for drawing, but it also came with a mouse that
let's you use the tablet as a trackpad. Perhaps they still have models
like that. It was much better than a mouse, but not as nice as a
trackball, in my opinion.

Speaking of keyboards, I won't part with my Unicomp buckling spring
keyboard. They are the famous, original IBM keyboards that are heavy
duty, have a great tactile feel with a nice audible click, and the
keycaps are double-injected. So the letters can never wear off them.
They should last a lifetime. Find them here in several configurations:

Those are all the same bad configuration as far as ergonomics.

The Lexmark M15 was fully split with buckling-spring switches.
