Re: Globally resize FM files in book?

2012-05-03 Thread Doris Pavlichek

Hi Nancy -

If you open all files in the book and select them, you can then go to
View Zoom 100%.

If you want all the files to be 120% (my favorite zoom level), you would
then select View Zoom In. That will take it up a notch on the
standard zoom ladder.

Hope this helps - D

Hi, all.

I have a 15-file book. Each file is at a different magnification, it seems.

I want to reset them all to one size. Is there any way to do it globally

I tried selecting all files in the book and using the control at the bottom of
the window, but it affected only the currently displayed file.

Thanks.

Re: FYI: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-14 Thread Doris Pavlichek
We upgraded from FM 7.x to 10 earlier this year (unstructured). I like a lot of
the new features, but we do see quite a few crashes. I have also gotten out of
memory errors when dealing with large books (and I'm on a Win7 VM with 4GB
RAM).

If you're stable and happy, there is no burning platform. An Adobe support
person actually said to me (during my first FM10 support case) Oh, version 7
was much more stable. .

The appearance difference between Helvetica and Arial is not always so
slight. If you are talking about all caps, the differences in most
letterforms are pretty subtle (altough a few, like the capital R, are
markedly different). But there are a few differences in lower-case letters
that are dead giveaways and that significantly change the feel of the
 typeface.

See the excellent quiz at http://www.ironicsans.com/helvarialquiz/
And an article that will allow you to ace the quiz at

Real Helvetica can look a little over-formal, but at least it nearly always
looks harmonious. There are a lot of cases where Arial looks graceless and
even ill-proportioned. It's not that Microsoft is incapable of good typeface
design--Verdana happens to be a really good face. It' sjust a shame that the
one Microsoft font that has become the most widely used is not among their
 better efforts.

The fact that Helvetica is not bundled with FM doesn't mean it doesn't
_support_ Helvetica. AFAIK, FM supports any standard PostScript, TrueType,
or OpenType font properly installed in your Windows OS.

Can someone install the Helvetica Font for his specific use in FM9, by
copying required fonts in the fminit (or fonts/ or any other) directory
   or by any other method.

After purchasing Helvetica, you install it in the same way that you install
any font in Windows. Search for install font in Windows Help and Support.

Alternatively, if you don't mind slight differences in appearance and
metrics, you can replace Helvetica with Arial. IIRC, default maker.ini file
maps Helvetica to Arial in the Unknown to Known Fonts section, so the
replacements will become permanent if you turn off Remember Missing Font

Rick, I hope you are recovering nicely from your surgery and that you

community for a long time, and this is the only contact I have with some of

thought it would be appropriate to post this.

Hi Everyone,

As many of you know, I was supposed to be on vacation this week, cycling
across New York State with 17 other guys. During my last few training rides,
I experienced some discomfort in my chest. It was a concern because I am in
pretty good shape with almost 800 miles on the bike so far this summer. I
had a stress test on Friday, and the results showed an 80% chance of a
blockage in one of my cardiac arteries. Monday I went into the hospital for
an angiogram, with the anticipation of having the blockage opened and a
stent put in. However, the test showed a couple of areas of blockage, one
being in an area that can't be opened with a stent. So on Wednesday around
12:45 pm, I am going to have open heart surgery with at least a double
bypass. I will be in the hospital for 3-5 days and hopefully experience a
quick recovery at home. I should be back to work late next week.

Those of you who know me well understand that I have a deep abiding
relationship with Jesus Christ. I received Him as my Savior on April 6, 1984
when I was twenty-five years old. Because He has forgiven me of my sins, I
know that when I die, I will be with Him in heaven. I am still a sinner and
don't deserve heaven, but because of His death on the cross and subsequent
resurrection, He gives eternal life to those who receive Him by faith.

That said, I am still fairly young (53), and have some young kids left to
raise. So, if you are given to prayer, please pray for Sherry and I this
Wednesday. Finally, thank you all for being a part of my life. The great
people that I work with is an important part of making my work so
satisfying.

Sincerely,
Rick

Laura,

I wrote to you privately, but I wanted to add something that, while anecdotal,
is relevant.

For a very large (100+ pages) document for my capstone course, I am running
into many issues of Word 2011 on a MacBook Pro running Lion crashing. It gives
me an error saying that my disk isn't inserted properly (a really ludicrous
error). The document has a few graphics, a ToC, and a low-overhead template.
There is no reason for it to crash, but it does.

The only way I have found to avoid the error is to force quit the app and work
on sections of the doc in smaller chunks, which we will knit together at the
end.

I can't fathom trying to use Word for product doc unless you did so in very
small files. Even then...

Diverse templates and Structure

2012-09-14 Thread Doris Pavlichek

Hi all -

At my company, we are preparing to go from unstructured FM10 to
structured FM10. Because of all of the messages on this board and
generally accepted best practices, we are doing some clean-up and
preparation now before trying to implement a structure. However, we have
at least one writer (we all report to different managers) who wants
certain conditions and paragraph tags that will then *not* be in all of
the documents. In the past, we have not done this. We all have the same
character and paragraph tags, and conditions, loaded.

My question is - will there be problems moving to structure and XML
output if we start having this kind of style drift?

Thanks - D

FYI: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-14 Thread Doris Pavlichek
We upgraded from FM 7.x to 10 earlier this year (unstructured). I like a lot of
the new features, but we do see quite a few crashes. I have also gotten "out of
memory" errors when dealing with large books (and I'm on a Win7 VM with 4GB
RAM).

If you're stable and happy, there is no "burning platform". An Adobe support
person actually said to me (during my first FM10 support case) "Oh, version 7
was much more stable." >.<

Disappearing text in PDF: a weird issue

2012-06-19 Thread Doris Pavlichek
Yep. We had a similar problem, and the Windows hotfix cleared it up. It
was a PostScript issue.

Globally resize FM files in book?

2012-05-02 Thread Doris Pavlichek
Hi Nancy -

If you open all files in the book and select them, you can then go to
View > Zoom > 100%.

If you want all the files to be 120% (my favorite zoom level), you would
then select View > Zoom > In. That will take it up a notch on the
standard zoom ladder.

Hope this helps - D

Overrides - FM10

2012-05-04 Thread Doris Pavlichek
Hi all -

We're having some issues with overrides in FrameMaker 10. We've been
using the new "Remove Overrides" option, and we thought we were having
some success. But one of my writers removed all overrides in a document
last night and left the document open on his desktop overnight (no
reboots, locally-stored file). This morning he found that the elves had
restored all the overrides for procSpaceAfter (a paragraph format that
creates some white space after a procedure) and many other pgf formats.

In addition, if he tries to remove the override for procStepResult
(which is an arrow in Zapfdingbats), it removes the UTF transform
between dingbats and Helvetica (our default font). The only way to keep
the arrow is to leave the override in place. We never had these issues
with FM 7.x, which we just converted from a couple of months ago.

Anyone else having problems with overrides messing up UTF mapping or
magically reappearing in a file? Seems this is not a very stable feature.

Diverse templates and Structure

2012-09-14 Thread Doris Pavlichek
Hi all -

At my company, we are preparing to go from unstructured FM10 to
structured FM10. Because of all of the messages on this board and
generally accepted "best practices", we are doing some clean-up and
preparation now before trying to implement a structure.

Thanks - D
