Publish CE languages FM7.x

Hello all,

certain characters of CE/EE languages won't display or print in FrameMaker 
using regular CE/EE fonts. I am interested in work arounds or (commercial 
available) sulutions for this. Both for XML (structured Frame) and unstructured 
FrameMaker data.

questions on XML export

Just two quick questions (FM 7.x , Windows).

1. After exporting to XML the Import of the same document gives validation 
error:
Message: Notation 'epsi' was referenced but never declared
Where should this be declared, in the EDD, DTD or Rules file? On export 
FrameMaker generates the notation:  
!-- Begin Document Specific Declarations --
!NOTATION epsiPUBLIC 

2. When exporting to XML, the reference to DTD is stored with full path info: 
!DOCTYPE Section SYSTEM file: ///E:/vijay/KOM107C-XML/FMApp/komori.dtd - how 
can I make FM store only the DTD name, without full path? The XML files need to 
be processed on different systems that don't have access to the same server.

   Asking the questions may have been quick, but I'm afraid the answers 
aren't as quick as you might think. See below!

   The notation should be declared in the DTD; either in the external 
subset (the file often referred to as the DTD), or in the internal subset 
at the beginning of the document. Given the two lines you quote (the 
comment and the notation declaration), FM has done just that on export. 
Unless you have removed that line on import, I don't see why you are 
getting an error message.

   By the way, as I write this, I have no Internet connection and can't 
check, but if my memory is correct, XML public identifiers require a system 
identifier. Although FM does not report an error given:

!NOTATION epsi PUBLIC 

I believe it is incorrect and should be at least:

!NOTATION epsi PUBLIC  

I suggest you avoid the issue by adding:

!NOTATION epsi SYSTEM 

to your DTD.

   And here is some relevant background. When you export a document that 
uses a notation that is not declared in the DTD, FM generates a notation 
declaration such as:

!NOTATION epsi SYSTEM 

in the internal subset. Whenever you open an XML document that has notation 
or entity declaration sin the internal subset, FM uses a reference page 
called Entity Declarations to save enough information to regenerate those 
declarations. Information about notation declarations is saved in a 
three-column table. The notation name goes in the first column, the public 
identifier in the second, and the system identifier in the third. The table 
does not distinguish a system identifier that is present but contains no 
characters from one that doesn't appear. When both columns 2 and 3 are 
empty, it generates a public identifier, so the imported:

!NOTATION epsi SYSTEM 

is exported as:

!NOTATION epsi PUBLIC 

Again, avoid the issue by declaring the notation in your EDD.


2. When exporting to XML, the reference to DTD is stored with full path 
info: !DOCTYPE Section SYSTEM file:

Good news, bad news on this one. There is a r/w rule that I believe should 
do what you want:

writer {external dtd is komori.dtd;}

Unfortunately, FM assumes that the specified file exists in the same folder 
as the FM file being saved. Thus, the rule works if you save the XML file 
to that folder. Suppose, however, that you have a main project folder with 
two subfolders, one called fm and once called xml. If your FM file is in 
the fm subfolder, and you save it as ..\xml\output.xml. FM uses 
..\xml\komori.dtd as the external identifier. Since there's no need to 
store the DTD there, such a file is not likely to exist. Short of using a 
custom FDK client, the workaround is to keep both FM and XML versions in 
the same folder.

the entity has been defined in the rules file, what can be wrong? Do I need an 
extra pointer in the DTD for these entitys?

I defined the entity (entity lang; is fm char [;) before the #include 
isoall.rw  statement.

Hello Lynn,

Could the 'Entity Locations' (element  Entities) in the Structapps file be 
used to point to the Public entity files?

Or in stead of defining separate entitys, use general pointer in the DTD, like

!ENTITY  % ISOlat2 PUBLIC
ISO 8879-1986//ENTITIES Added Latin 2//EN 

My problem is that I working with 'legacy' XML files that sre created by 
different resources. Sometimes escape sequences are used for characters (like 
lang;). I don't want to make separate entrys for each occurence as long as 
they are following the (XML)standards.

   You must declare the entity in the DTD as well as supporting it with a 
read/write rule:

  !ENTITY lang [

Furthermore, the name of the entity is lang; the leading  and closing ; 
delimit the entity reference from surrounding text. Therefore, the r/w rule 
you need is:

  entity lang is fm char [;

FM 7.2 7.2p158 - undo history

When performing a 'file-save all files in book' action, FM comes up with a 
warning message for each file saved that the undo-history will be lost. In a 
390 file book it means 390 times clicking 'ok'.

Can this be avoided somehow - can the message on losing the undo history be 
turned off any way? It comes up very often.

FM 7.2 XSLT and unicode characters

Hello all,

I am trying to create a XSLT template to transform uncode characters to ansii 
on import of XML in FM. This concerns the unicode characters for CE/EE 
languages that can not be read by FM.

As I don't have any experience with XSLT, could anyone point me in the right 
direction? Probably need a kind of if-else construction or variables to use the 
'transate' function.

How does FM react when an XSLT refers to Javascript?

Whe you say:  translate Unicode characters to character entities (e.g., 
ccaron;)

I can't get the character entitie displayed correct in FrameMaker, it either 
becomes a variable (with the unicode value or (when mapped in the rules file) a 
wrong character?

XSLT and DocType declaration

We try to use an XSLT on import of XML (FM 7.2).

Now the XSLT removes the DocType declaration from the XML file. We can reset 
the DocType itself, but how can we resolve the Document Specific Declarations, 
like: 
!ENTITY ImportedGraphic1 SYSTEM ../eps/02010200-1PV4-Ea.eps NDATA epsi
As these are 'in' the DocType element they disappear after transformation.

Wim,

The XSLT processor reads the DTD and creates an internal representation 
of the document tree, including entity references. You should be able to 
access these entities via the XSLT unparsed-entity-uri() function. For 
example, the following fragment should populate an XSLT variable with 
the pathname to the original graphic --

xsl:variable name=target 
select=unparsed-entity-uri(ImportedGraphic1) /

I haven't tested this, but you may need to convert these entity 
references to attribute values  (e.g. graphic href={$target} / ) in 
your import XSLT transform.

It is Very Annoying that XSLT/XPath does not provide a handle to the 
original DocType declaration, but this is an XSLT issue, not a 
FrameMaker issue.

Problem is 'solved' - sorry to have bothered you (deadline) but it still is 
a bug in FM7.2:

It turned out to be an image, EPS image that actually wasn't EPS but AI format. 
FrameMaker 7.1 had no problem importing the XML, but FrameMaker 7.2 crashed. 
Illustration was identified as pdf (NDATA pdf) when the XML was created in FM 
7.1. Extension was .EPS. Apparently FM 7.2 can't handle this misinterpretation?

RE: Framemaker and Translation

Hello Loren 

Before you start looking for a translation company have a look at your manuals 
and documentation and check if these are suited for translation. There are many 
guidelines available (on the internet, perform a search for 'guide to 
localization' or similar), also from FrameMaker users. Note that although your 
FrameMaker manuals may be set up to be perfectly printed or converted to PDF, 
there can be many issues that frustrate proper translation. Besides that, there 
are many issues to consider: illustrations, software screens, software strings 
(menu items refered to in the manuals), on line help, etc. You should take all 
this into account when designing your international documentation.

FrameMaker files can be saved as MIF and all translation tools can use MIF 
files as input for translation, thus generating a translated MIF file that can 
be opened in FrameMaker again. Basically all text will be replaced by 
translated text, while keeping all formatting. But be aware that the results 
may not be as expected when the documents are not properly prepared. For 
example all 'tweaked' formatting and manual overrides (hard returns, extra 
spaces) are maintained - the length of other languages will differ from English 
text so results can be awkward (Spanish text will take at least 140% more space 
then English text).

If you don't use FrameMaker yet, you could consider to start creating XML and 
publish using FrameMaker (or any other tool). XML can be translated easily as 
well.

What's the best way to set up this workflow.

For example, do we develop in FM, then output to another format (say
RTF,etc), the translators use this format, we get it back, then convert back
with FM?

What is this, a Trados exposure? I think we should not discuss translation 
tools (there are other lists). I have been working in the localization for over 
12 years now and it always comes down to the same: if the source files are not 
set up properly, meaning 'designed' and formatted with internationalization in 
mind, translation does not work out as expected and can cost a ot of money and 
effort - whatever tool or translation company you use.

The other way round the same: once you have set up your documentation properly, 
translation is no pain at all, whatever tool used. Complex translation 
instruction kits as mentioned before won't be neccessary.

My advise: keep it simple, standardize, re-use both content and formatting 
wherever possible.

Yes,

But my question is: using this option cteates a .ps file with name
constructed as: bookname(filename (with a left bracket in the
middle). I only want the file name as name for the .ps file.

Is there a setting somewhere to change this?

May be it's an Adobe PDF issue, I get this when I print to Adobe PDF
without letting it ask for the file name. I didn't try to print to .ps
yet.

your procedure is correct. The issue here is the naming of the files
produced.  

In FrameMaker until version 6, when printing to file and using an asterx
(*) for filename would produce separate files for each file in the book,
using the correct file names. But the new feature (since 7.x) using the
'Separate File for Each Document' option creates .ps files (or .pdf)
using the bookname+filename.

Isn't that the case at your site?

FrameMaker to InDesign

Framers,
 
is there a known 'short' way to move a (unstructured) FrameMaker manual
to InDesign, without having to manually redo all formatting etc?
 
We need to translate a FrameMaker manual into Hebrew and Arabic. Any
other suggestion is welcome

(OT) - inquiery for pdf editing in MSWord

In your opinion, what is curtrently the best tool to open (convert)pdf
documents in MSWord and edit the contents? 

Please send your recommendations off list, 

thanks.

(I am not searching for batch conversion, but for 'one time' open and
edit documents that are only available in PDF without having the
original file. Round tripping is also not required, we'll save the
results in MSWord and print to PDF again.)

I can not get the corrcet syntax for FM to export only as file, not as
entity. It keeps on exporting it as an entity, even when I delete the
entity reference page and use the 'attribute entity is fm attribute'
rule (FM won't import graphics that are declared by entitys though).

Wim,

1) FM can export a graphic using either an ENTITY attribute (default
name is entity) or a CDATA attribute (default name is file). The value
of the former is the name of an unparsed entity whose system identifier
names the graphic file; the value of the latter is the name of the
graphic file. If the DTD declares both attributes, FM uses the ENTITY
attribute.

You can specify the attribute names with read/write rules such as:

 element image {
is fm graphic element;
attribute graphicfile is fm property file;
attribute graphicentity is fm property entity;
}

These rules allow FM to import files that use either graphicfile or
graphicentity, but on export it would always use graphicentity.  If you
want it to export only graphicfile, remove the rule for graphicentity.
If you want to export using graphicfile, but to be able to import either
form, you'll need to use different rules for opening XML documents and
saving documents as XML.

If your DTD happens to declare an ENTITY attribute named entity and you
don't want FM to use it for exporting graphics, use the rule:

 attribute entity is fm attribute;

2) While XSLT cannot simply copy the internal DTD subset of the document
it is processing, it can generate a new one with entity declarations
equivalent to those in the original. Use the function
unparsed-entity-uri to write such a transform.

Where should this be declared, in the EDD, DTD or Rules file? On export

Good news, bad news on this one. There is a r/w rule that I believe should 
do what you want:

to that folder. Suppose, however, that you have a main project folder with 
two subfolders, one called fm and once called xml. If your FM file is in 
the fm subfolder, and you save it as ..\xml\output.xml. FM uses 
..\xml\komori.dtd as the external identifier. Since there's no need to 
store the DTD there, such a file is not likely to exist. Short of using a 
custom FDK client, the workaround is to keep both FM and XML versions in

Could the 'Entity Locations' (element < Entities>) in the Structapps file be 
used to point to the Public entity files?

Or in stead of defining separate entitys, use general pointer in the DTD, like



My problem is that I working with 'legacy' XML files that sre created by 
different resources. Sometimes escape sequences are used for characters (like 
). I don't want to make separate entrys for each occurence as long as 
they are following the (XML)standards.

   You must declare the entity in the DTD as well as supporting it with a 
read/write rule:

  

Furthermore, the name of the entity is "lang"; the leading & and closing ; 
delimit the entity reference from surrounding text. Therefore, the r/w rule 
you need is:

  entity "lang" is fm char "[";

If the error :  Unknown Char:   appears on import, does that mean that 
FrameMaker can't read the Uncicode character - even if it's available in the 
rules file as:
entity "#x203B" is fm char "*";

Note: in the XML it is a Japanese asterix.

FM 7.2 7.2p158 - undo history

When performing a 'file-save all files in book' action, FM comes up with a 
warning message for each file saved that the undo-history will be lost. In a 
390 file book it means 390 times clicking 'ok'.

Can this be avoided somehow - can the message on losing the undo history be 
turned off any way? It comes up very often.

Wim,

1) FM can export a graphic using either an ENTITY attribute (default
name is entity) or a CDATA attribute (default name is file). The value
of the former is the name of an unparsed entity whose system identifier
names the graphic file; the value of the latter is the name of the
graphic file. If the DTD declares both attributes, FM uses the ENTITY
attribute.

You can specify the attribute names with read/write rules such as:

 element "image" {
is fm graphic element;
attribute "graphicfile" is fm property file;
attribute "graphicentity" is fm property entity;
}

These rules allow FM to import files that use either graphicfile or
graphicentity, but on export it would always use graphicentity.  If you
want it to export only graphicfile, remove the rule for graphicentity.
If you want to export using graphicfile, but to be able to import either
form, you'll need to use different rules for opening XML documents and
saving documents as XML.

If your DTD happens to declare an ENTITY attribute named entity and you
don't want FM to use it for exporting graphics, use the rule:

 attribute "entity" is fm attribute;

2) While XSLT cannot simply copy the internal DTD subset of the document
it is processing, it can generate a new one with entity declarations
equivalent to those in the original. Use the function
unparsed-entity-uri to write such a transform.

Hello Lisbeth,

unfortunately there is no 'simple' solution for this, unless you can work on a 
Lithuanian Wondows system.

We have been struggling with this, same for other CE and EE languages.Problem 
is, FrameMakert does not support Unicode and it does not automatically take the 
correct character set from the Open Type fonts (Arial, Times New Roman).

Work around is to tweak the register and add some 'fonts' using the 
FontSubstitutes key. See below for the current key contents, this works for me. 
Notice the notation of the 'codepage' or set number after the font names. 
Basically it says: basic set of font named Arial CE uses set 238 from Arial 
(Open Type font). Now when you choose Arial CE from the FrameMaker font menu, 
it should display correct in FrameMaker. Same for Arial Baltic with Lithuanian 
text. The 0 (zero) in the left part seems to be essential.

An easier way to accomplish the same thing is to download and use WGL 
Assistant from http://wgl.typ.pl -- you can simply select checkboxes to 
turn on the required substitutions, without messing in the Registry.

OT - Pagemaker print issue tiff files

Hello,

we have Pagemaker files (no, we can't use InDesign nor convert them)
that need to be printed. The pages use some tiff-files. When printing,
or saving as pdf, the images remain low resolution, as if PM uses the
previeuw in stead of the image it self.

Any one of you, familiar with pagemaker, would know what to do about
this? A setting some where?

We're using PM 6.5 on Windows 2000. files originate from a Mac system,
are converted to Windows for translation.

Printing CE character tcaron to PDF

It turnes out that the font we use (a type 1 font) doesn't print the character 
to PDF, although it is displayed on screen and printed correctly to our 
PostScript printer. Using a True Type font, the pdf is OK. I don't really 
understand why this happens, probably has to do with FrameMakers character 
mapping, anyway we changed the template now to use True Type fonts in stead of 
Tupe 1.

Have you checked the font embedding settings of your PDF settings/job
options? 
Also check for licensing restrictions on the font, and the "do not send
fonts to 'Adobe PDF'" setting in the printing preferences of the PDF
printer.

Hello Loren 

Before you start looking for a translation company have a look at your manuals 
and documentation and check if these are suited for translation. There are many 
guidelines available (on the internet, perform a search for 'guide to 
localization' or similar), also from FrameMaker users. Note that although your 
FrameMaker manuals may be set up to be perfectly printed or converted to PDF, 
there can be many issues that frustrate proper translation. Besides that, there 
are many issues to consider: illustrations, software screens, software strings 
(menu items refered to in the manuals), on line help, etc. You should take all 
this into account when designing your international documentation.

FrameMaker files can be saved as MIF and all translation tools can use MIF 
files as input for translation, thus generating a translated MIF file that can 
be opened in FrameMaker again. Basically all text will be replaced by 
translated text, while keeping all formatting. But be aware that the results 
may not be as expected when the documents are not properly prepared. For 
example all 'tweaked' formatting and manual overrides (hard returns, extra 
spaces) are maintained - the length of other languages will differ from English 
text so results can be awkward (Spanish text will take at least 140% more space 
then English text).

If you don't use FrameMaker yet, you could consider to start creating XML and 
publish using FrameMaker (or any other tool). XML can be translated easily as 
well.

What is this, a Trados exposure? I think we should not discuss translation 
tools (there are other lists). I have been working in the localization for over 
12 years now and it always comes down to the same: if the source files are not 
set up properly, meaning 'designed' and formatted with internationalization in 
mind, translation does not work out as expected and can cost a ot of money and 
effort - whatever tool or translation company you use.

The other way round the same: once you have set up your documentation properly, 
translation is no pain at all, whatever tool used. Complex translation 
instruction kits as mentioned before won't be neccessary.

My advise: keep it simple, standardize, re-use both content and formatting 
wherever possible.

I am able to create individual postscript files, which are then
distilled to PDF, without any special scripts by doing the following:

What this gives me is separate .ps files for each, or the selected,
chapter of the book.

Then you distill each of the .ps files to produce individual .pdfs of
each.

Each postscript file is the name of the respective chapter.

There is no way to change this in the FrameMaker interface. There are
two ways you could script this:

1) Write a script that would open each file in the book and save it as
PDF, using the correct name.
2) Write a script to rename the files after they are created.

Personally, I think (1) would be a better choice.

There is no if-else functionality in XSL. Instead, you use xsl:choose with a
series of nested xsl:when elements and an optional final xsl:otherwise.

i.e.: 


Do something
Do something else
Perform some default action


If I understand correctly what you're trying to do, you'd want your
intermediate transform to output ASCII or whatever encoding you require by
using an xsl:output element as a child of xsl:stylesheet:



You would use a standard copy type scenario but include a template for text
that calls the transform function. So your transform would look something

XSLT and DocType declaration

We try to use an XSLT on import of XML (FM 7.2).

Now the XSLT removes the DocType declaration from the XML file. We can reset 
the DocType itself, but how can we resolve the Document Specific Declarations, 
like: 

As these are 'in' the DocType element they disappear after transformation.

Is this a known behaviour?

The XSLT processor reads the DTD and creates an internal representation 
of the document tree, including entity references. You should be able to 
access these entities via the XSLT unparsed-entity-uri() function. For 
example, the following fragment should populate an XSLT variable with 
the pathname to the original graphic --



I haven't tested this, but you may need to convert these entity 
references to attribute values  (e.g.  ) in 
your import XSLT transform.

It is Very Annoying that XSLT/XPath does not provide a handle to the 
original DocType declaration, but this is an XSLT issue, not a 
FrameMaker issue.

Frame 7.2 crashes on batch conversion

Problem is 'solved' - sorry to have bothered you (deadline) but it still is 
a bug in FM7.2:

It turned out to be an image, EPS image that actually wasn't EPS but AI format. 
FrameMaker 7.1 had no problem importing the XML, but FrameMaker 7.2 crashed. 
Illustration was identified as pdf (NDATA pdf) when the XML was created in FM 
7.1. Extension was .EPS. Apparently FM 7.2 can't handle this misinterpretation?

Sounds either as if you're running out of memory or hitting a problem
that's delaying a read or write...

Amount of RAM?
Are the files across a network?
Does the problem occur when all files are open?

Printing CE character tcaron to PDF

Hello all,

we managed to get the proper CE characters in FrameMaker (XML), but now the 
tcaron won't print to PDF. It prints to our postscript printer, but in the pdf 
there is an empty space. We print to adobe pdf (Acr. 6) printer. What can be 
the cause it won't print? Used font is HelveticaNeue55CE
