Conditional text in index markers

2009-04-08 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello Framers,

In Framemaker 8.0p277, does anyone know if it is possible to apply
conditional text to a part of the text in an index marker?
I want some of the text only to display in my online help version, so I
have a condition PDF and one online-only.

thanks for your help!

regards,
Tom

Layout of automatic generate Index gets lost due to (unused) missing font

2009-09-30 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Dear Frame-users,

Using Framemaker 7.2 (but having the same behavior in Framemaker 8) on Windows
XP, the layout of our automatic generated Index gets completely lost: all
styles become Times New Roman, size 12 pt. This for all PCs that have a missing
font, even when that font is not used at all e.g. in a unused Table style.

Please help as we need to create PDFs of 5 manuals in 30 languages!

thanks a lot for all your ideas,

kind regards,
Tom

Inserting a same marker in all files of a book

2010-02-17 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Framers,

I'm guessing my issue will only be solvable by a script?

Working within Framemaker 8 (Technical Suite) I need to insert a PageStyle
marker (with same value) in 102 Framefiles of a book. Those files are generated
by an external application and can update at any time. These pages contain one
heading (style chapter_title) and a lot of html body text, put to passthrough
for my ePublisher output.

I could do it manually but the continuous update would oblige me to do it over
and over again so something automatic would be great.

thanks in advance,
regards,
Tom

RE: Inserting a same marker in all files of a book

2010-02-18 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Ricard,

Thanks for this idea, it's great but apparently it does not work for my
application.
The 'PageStyle' marker is a marker recognised by ePublisher to apply a specific
layout (override to the standard layout).
When I put it on the Master pages, ePublisher does not seem to recognize it...

Thanks anyway!

Well, once again, I probably don't understand the context... (It would help to

matter.)

But what the heck, I'll jump in anyway.

Assuming that the marker can live in a background text frame (like the header
or footer), put it on the master pages of one of the files. Then import page
layouts from that file to the other files in the book.

SOLVED Inserting a same marker in all files of a book

2010-02-18 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi all,

Thanks for all your ideas but yesterday I finally saw the light...

I remembered the good old By pasting option in the Find/replace window, and
magically, you can paste a marker! This is something I did not know and which
might be interesting for others!
Luckily my docs contain some recurring text so I can find/replace recurring
text by recurringblablabla text and then find/replace blablabla by the
marker.

Kind regards,
Tom

RE: Linking to folder on network

2010-09-22 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello Jess,

I think this is what you need:

message URL file:///C:/FOLDERNAME

where C and foldername should be customized to your situation of course.
Please take into account that the folder is opened in the preferred browser of
the user, not in Windows Explorer.

Please let me know if it works.

kind regards,

Tom

I want to put a hypertext link in my FrameMaker file, so that a reader can
click the path name in the PDF and it opens that folder on the
network...similar to inserting a Hypertext link in a Word document. Can this be
done? I've tried the 'message URL' command and it didn't work, nor did the
'open document' command.

Thanks,

setting up technical documentation workflow from scratch : about DocZone

2010-10-15 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Wim, Jakobsen,

I just wanted to add a small hint: if you're really going to choose DocZone
because of its integrated translation support, please think twice.
They're not ready yet... We are doing a translation job for the moment in that
tool and a lot of programming work is still to be done (again, I only speak

Hi,

You're lucky to be able to set this up from scratch! Don't make the mistake to
choose a tool before you have defined your goals and requirements. Also be
careful for vendor lock in. Go for open standards and flexible solutions.

If you go for XML remember that there are many XML editing tools.

You should definitely take a look at the Adobe Technical Communication Suite

- this doesn't comprise a database but it has all the tools you need to create,
review and manage technical docs.

If you want a database you probably end up with a structured approach based on
DITA. FrameMaker and the Adobe TCS are fully capable of handling DITA topics
from a database.

Further check out: Alfresco with Componize, Ixiasoft DITA CMS, DocZone (with
integrated translation support), Author-IT, the MadCap Flare suite,
HelpManual, the Danish based DITA Exchange solution on Sharepoint or in case
you're not tight on budget SDL Trisoft. (just google for the URLs)

Some of these work with FrameMaker, some don't (out of the box) and these are
not all DITA but in all cases DITA compliant if needed.

Want more help? Contact me off list!

I am about to author a small report on setting up a technical documentation
workflow from scratch.

I need to devise a setup where a group of author can write tech docs, another
group maintain and translate the docs and publish them as pdf.

It is vital that the process can be thought within a technogy which allows for
later integration with publishing to web as well.

I have taken a look at Woodwings serverbased solution which uses InDesign as
publishing frontend, but I would like to see whether I can accomplish the same
using FrameMaker. I suppose I must look for a kind of database drive solution
where the authors write into a database.

I have taken a look on a couple of database publishing solutions:

Patternstream, Sabern, FrameMaker Server but some of these solutions looks
strangely dated when one merely looks at their websites. Sabern uses product
images from FrameMaker 5.5. Patternstream recommends in FrameMaker 8 in a news
release dated 2007. Adobes documentation for FrameMaker Server seems to be non
existent - even a tutorial links to some very quaint and useless course on a
server not even belonging to Adobe.

My question is: Am I looking in the wrong places? Can somebody reccommend
products which will help me streamline the process?

regards

Jakobsen

S1000D in Framemaker

2010-10-29 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Dear all,

Does anyone have some experience with creation of S1000D manuals in Framemaker,
no matter the Framemaker version?
One of our customers and by consequence my project manager asked me to find out
if we can write them via PTC products but price seems the first and main
obstacle, besided the learning curve.
And as we do have a lot of experience with (unstructured) Frame, it would be
obvious to insist on writing them via our beloved tool.
The download of the package is for free, right?

Anyhow, I'm going to have a look at this webinar
https://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p31412590/ but any real-life experiences you all
like to share would be great!

thanks in advance,

After installing of the 9th version in the 7th version scrolling stopped to
work, in version 9 scrolling works correctly.

While I work more in it in the 7th version, it gives a lot of inconvenience.

There is Windows XP SP3 on the computer. I try to use the latest version of

Is it possible to fix this problem: that scrolling could work in 7th and 9th

Thanks in advance!

Re: Hyperlinking Between Frame and MS Word Source

2011-02-07 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello Angela,

I don't know which 'entry points' Word generates when creating (html) output
from it for a heading 1 for example, but that can easily be found out by
generating a Word doc. As an emergency solution you can then use the pass
through option in Frame/Webworks to type a working link in Framemaker. You
then have to leave the idea of perfect single-sourcing behind however...

Angela already asked this question on the WebWorks forum, but I suggested that
she ask the question here, too, since it's not strictly an ePublisher question.

Forget the ePublisher side of things for now. I'd like to know if you can
link/xref/whatever from a point INSIDE an FM file to a point INSIDE a Word
file, and vice versa.

Re: Adobe ExportPDF

2011-05-09 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Susan,

I used Mif2Go too, but I must admit that I'm even more happy with the results
we are getting from the latest Adobe Acrobat X Pro, using the Save As Word
function! This depends however on the native application (if it's Frame, than
you're good!).

Hi Framers,

Has anyone taken a gander at this product/service yet? I'm occasionally plagued
by co-workers who want editable Word versions of docs I create in Frame. The
Frame export to RTF leaves a whole lot to be desired and I'm wondering if this
new thing will produce a better formatted RTF file. Anyone know what the
limitations are? Does it choke on master pages and graphics?

Needless to say, the FAQs on the Adobe site aren't the questions I'd be
asking.?

Thanks.

I'm not familiar with Adobe ExportPDF, but we use Mif2Go to convert FM to Word,
and it works wonderfully well. If you can't find the solution that you want
with Adobe ExportPDF, check out Mif2Go.

Change declaration when converting FM with MIF2GO

2011-05-11 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi everyone,

I'm trying to set up a first conversion of a structured Framemaker 8 manual
(p277) to DITA XML via MIF2GO.
Everything looks OK, except for the declaration 'override'. I need an override
because I upload the resulting XMLs in Docato (EMC product). After upload
editing is done with Serna.
I found this in the MIF2GO help:

_

Mif2Go sets the following default values for the PUBLIC declaration, depending
on the DITA version and on the topic type. For example, for DITA version 1.1
and topic type concept:

[HTMLOptions]

HTMLDocType=-//OASIS//DTD DITA 1.1 Concept//EN

HTMLDTD=docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.1/CS01/dtd/concept.dtd

If you need the declaration to comply with the requirements of third-party
tools, you can override the default values. For XMetaL, for example:

[HTMLOptions]

HTMLDocType=-//OASIS//DTD DITA Composite//EN

HTMLDTD=ditabase.dtd

My problem is two-fold:

1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration (other
changes in the .ini do).

2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following
resulting declaration:

concept xmlns:xsa3=http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/;
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id=id xml:lang=en-us
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation=../../catalog/concept.xsd

Thanks for your help!

Regards,

Tom

Re: How do I convert my FrameMaker files to Word?

2011-06-03 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Linda,

Even better than MIF2GO I highly recommend the following work-around (hoping
you have the latest Acrobat, X).
Just create a PDF from your Framemaker file and then use the Save As Word
option in Acrobat X.
Normally this gives astonishing results.

I hope this helps!

Saving Frame 10 files in batch to Frame 7

2012-06-27 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Dear Framers,

Framemaker 10 + Framemaker 7.2 + Framescript 5.2R1p248

Am I correct that for saving Framemaker 10 files to Framemaker 7, in batch, I
need to pass by MIF7, right?

In Framemaker 10, I have a script that saves all my Framemaker 10 files from a
book to MIF7.
In Framemaker 7.2, I then use another script to save a folder of MIFs to FM7. I
then get a lot of opcode errors in the console:

(13362): Invalid opcode: XRefSrcElemNonUniqueId.
--- Skipping these characters: -- Done skipping.MIF: C:\temp\xxx.mif
(13363): Invalid opcode: XRefAltText.
--- Skipping these characters: -- Done skipping.MIF: C:\temp\xxx.mif
(13364): Invalid opcode: XRefApiClient.
--- Skipping these characters: XRefClientName XRefClientType
-- Done skipping.MIF: C:\temp\xxx.mif

The files then open with Framemaker 7 but links between different documents of
the same book do not work any more.

Can someone help?

Thanks in advance,
Tom

RE: Saving Frame 10 files in batch to Frame 7

2012-06-28 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Georg,

Thanks, I'm giving it a try.
However, how comes the Save Book as MIF7.0 command is saving the files with
the extension .fm.mif? The good news is that the cross-reference seems to
work now (however referring to a xxx.fm.mif file).
If I then run my framescript to save the MIFs back to FM, I get files with the
extension .fm.fm and... the cross-ref obviously still refers to the
xxx.fm.mif file = broken.

I know, one could think I can use the Save book as FM option on the
xxx.book.mif (7.0) but then I have FM10 files again.

RE: Saving Frame 10 files in batch to Frame 7

2012-06-28 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Frank,
Thanks for your reply.
In the MIF the tags u\c\ are wrongly added, leading to a path
..\.fm.
The ..\ is wrong, so if I delete the u\c\ tags in the MIF via a text
editor my path is correct. But that's something I don't want to do manually for
all 200 files, obviously. Maybe I should find out how I can find and replace
some code in a batch of MIF files (via text editor)? There should be freeware
for that, right?

I'm not sure if this is a bug in Fm10 or if that is the way it is designed to
work. XRefAltText, XRefClientName, XRefClientType and XRefSrcElemNoUniqueId are
all properties that were added to FM in version 9. However, when I used Fm10 to
save an Fm10 document as Mif 7.0, the mif file contains these invalid
properties. This explains why you are getting those messages when opening the
Mif7 document generated by Fm10. I tried this myself using the FM10 UI (not
FrameScript) and I get the same results.

As far as the bad links are concerned, are the files in the same relative
position? You might have to open a mif file using a text editor and look at the
XRefSrcFile property of the XRef to see where Fm7 thinks the file to file
link should be.

Re: FrameMaker 10 does not start (licensing expired)

Dear Anjaneai,

Is there a solution yet?
As Shlomo, I tried your suggested solution 1 and 2 without success. Again, just
like Shlomo, I don't want to try solution 3.
Just as a note: simply setting the date back to 2012 makes the license issue
disappear. But this is something I can do as I have admin rights on my PC. What
can I do for all my colleagues that are getting back from holidays today, need
Framemaker 10 and don't have admin rights??

Happy New Year to all Framers!

Hi Shlomo,

First of all, a very Happy New Year to all dear Framers!

Can you please try the steps suggested here -
http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-licensing-product-expired-cs4.html

Also, please go to start - run - launch - services.msc and look for 'Flexnet
Licensing Service' and restart/start the service.

Please share me your findings.

Good luck!

Thanks,

The Adobe chat representative suggested contacting Adobe tech support

FM11, FM9 and FM8 do start as expected.

Store and reapply format overrides

2013-01-04 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello all,

For a long time now I've been looking for a solution to archive Framemaker 7.2
books with a lot of text insets, often inserted with a paragraph override on
the anchor (e.g. top of column).
When I use the Archive book plugin all these overrides are lost.
So I was wondering if someone knows how to store overrides in a book and
reapply them after archiving? Maybe with a script.
I've tried all other ways to archive books (Pack and Go script from itl, using
higher Framemaker versions) but all of them fail (cross-references or overrides
get lost).

Thanks for your ideas.

Set-up in Framemaker to link to PDF in attachment

2013-11-29 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone knows if there's a hypertext marker pattern (or
alternative) in Framemaker 8 (Win7) to create a working link in the resulting
PDF to a PDF that was manually added in attachment. We tried with message URL
but then the linked PDF has to be in the correct folder (relative to the PDF
that results from the Frame file). We tried with a gotolink and named
destination but the link is lost during PDF creation - which is logic as
Framemaker checks and does not find a result. We can get the links to work in
PDF but then it has to be done manually and that's not what we want.

RE: Set-up in Framemaker to link to PDF in attachment

2013-11-29 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Yves,

Thanks for the tip.
It doesn’t work however, which seems logic to me: “my_doc.pdf” isn’t in the
C:/temp/ folder, not even temporarily when opening the main pdf file. It’s only
in attachment of the main PDF and of course I can’t ask my users to put all
attached PDFs to the required folder.

Conditional text in index markers

2009-04-08 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello Framers,

In Framemaker 8.0p277, does anyone know if it is possible to apply
conditional text to a part of the text in an index marker?
I want some of the text only to display in my online help version, so I
have a condition "PDF" and one "online-only".

thanks for your help!

Inserting a same marker in all files of a book

2010-02-17 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Framers,

I'm guessing my issue will only be solvable by a script?

Working within Framemaker 8 (Technical Suite) I need to insert a PageStyle
marker (with same value) in 102 Framefiles of a book. Those files are generated
by an external application and can update at any time. These pages contain one
heading (style chapter_title) and a lot of html body text, put to "passthrough"
for my ePublisher output.

I could do it manually but the continuous update would oblige me to do it over
and over again so something automatic would be great.

thanks in advance,
regards,
Tom

Inserting a same marker in all files of a book

2010-02-18 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Ricard,

Thanks for this idea, it's great but apparently it does not work for my
application.
The 'PageStyle' marker is a marker recognised by ePublisher to apply a specific
layout (override to the standard layout).
When I put it on the Master pages, ePublisher does not seem to recognize it...

Thanks anyway!

Well, once again, I probably don't understand the context... (It would help to
know what the purpose of the PageStyle marker, what you're trying to
accomplish, and why the kinds of pgfs in the main text flow
matter.)

But what the heck, I'll jump in anyway.

Assuming that the marker can live in a background text frame (like the header
or footer), put it on the master pages of one of the files. Then import page
layouts from that file to the other files in the book.

SOLVED Inserting a same marker in all files of a book

2010-02-19 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi all,

Thanks for all your ideas but yesterday I finally saw the light...

I remembered the good old "By pasting" option in the Find/replace window, and
magically, you can paste a marker! This is something I did not know and which
might be interesting for others!
Luckily my docs contain some recurring text so I can find/replace "recurring"
text by "recurringblablabla" text and then find/replace "blablabla" by the
marker.

Kind regards,
Tom

setting up technical documentation workflow from scratch : about DocZone

2010-10-15 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Wim, Jakobsen,

I just wanted to add a small hint: if you're really going to choose DocZone
because of its integrated translation support, please think twice.
They're not ready yet... We are doing a translation job for the moment in that
tool and a lot of programming work is still to be done (again, I only speak
about the translation side).

Further check out: Alfresco with Componize, Ixiasoft DITA CMS, DocZone (with
integrated translation support), Author-IT, the MadCap Flare suite,
Help, the Danish based DITA Exchange solution on Sharepoint or in case
you're not tight on budget SDL Trisoft. (just google for the URLs)

Some of these work with FrameMaker, some don't (out of the box) and these are
not all DITA but in all cases DITA compliant if needed.

Linking to folder on network

Hello Jess,

I think this is what you need:

message URL file:///C:/FOLDERNAME

where "C" and "foldername" should be customized to your situation of course.
Please take into account that the folder is opened in the preferred browser of
the user, not in Windows Explorer.

Please let me know if it works.

Hyperlinking Between Frame and MS Word Source

2011-02-07 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello Angela,

I don't know which 'entry points' Word generates when creating (html) output
from it for a heading 1 for example, but that can easily be found out by
generating a Word doc. As an emergency solution you can then use the "pass
through" option in Frame/Webworks to type a working link in Framemaker. You
then have to leave the idea of perfect single-sourcing behind however...

Dear, FrameMaker users,

I have to use on my computer at same time two versions of Adobe FrameMaker 7th
and 9th.

After installing of the 9th version in the 7th version scrolling stopped to
work, in version 9 scrolling works correctly.

While I work more in it in the 7th version, it gives a lot of inconvenience.

There is Windows XP SP3 on the computer. I try to use the latest version of
drivers for the mouse - it did not help :(

Is it possible to fix this problem: that scrolling could work in 7th and 9th
version?

Thanks in advance!

Andrew

How do I convert my FrameMaker files to Word?

2011-06-03 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Linda,

Even better than MIF2GO I highly recommend the following work-around (hoping
you have the latest Acrobat, X).
Just create a PDF from your Framemaker file and then use the Save As Word
option in Acrobat X.
Normally this gives astonishing results.

I hope this helps!

Tom

Needless to say, the "FAQs" on the Adobe site aren't the questions I'd be
asking.?

HTMLDocType="-//OASIS//DTD DITA 1.1 Concept//EN"

HTMLDTD="docs.oasis-open.org/dita/v1.1/CS01/dtd/concept.dtd"

If you need the declaration to comply with the requirements of third-party
tools, you can override the default values. For XMetaL, for example:

[HTMLOptions]

HTMLDocType="-//OASIS//DTD DITA Composite//EN"

HTMLDTD="ditabase.dtd"

My problem is two-fold:

1) MIF2GO does not seem to pick up any change I make to this declaration (other
changes in the .ini do).

2) If it would work what's the change I need to make to have the following
resulting declaration:

http://dita.oasis-open.org/architecture/2005/;
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance; id="id" xml:lang="en-us"
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="../../catalog/concept.xsd">

Thanks for your help!

Tom

--- Skipping these characters:> -- Done skipping.MIF: "C:\temp\xxx.mif"
(13363): Invalid opcode: XRefAltText.
--- Skipping these characters:> -- Done skipping.MIF: "C:\temp\xxx.mif"
(13364): Invalid opcode: XRefApiClient.
--- Skipping these characters:< XRefClientName > < XRefClientType > >
-- Done skipping.MIF: "C:\temp\xxx.mif"

The files then open with Framemaker 7 but links between different documents of
the same book do not work any more.

Can someone help?

Saving Frame 10 files in batch to Frame 7

2012-06-28 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Georg,

Thanks, I'm giving it a try.
However, how comes the "Save Book as MIF7.0" command is saving the files with
the extension ".fm.mif"? The good news is that the cross-reference seems to
work now (however referring to a xxx.fm.mif file).
If I then run my framescript to save the MIFs back to FM, I get files with the
extension ".fm.fm" and... the cross-ref obviously still refers to the
xxx.fm.mif file = broken.

I know, one could think I can use the "Save book as FM" option on the
"xxx.book.mif" (7.0) but then I have FM10 files again.

Saving Frame 10 files in batch to Frame 7

2012-06-28 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Frank,
Thanks for your reply.
In the MIF the tags "<u\><c\>" are wrongly added, leading to a path
"..\.fm".
The "..\" is wrong, so if I delete the "<u\><c\>" tags in the MIF via a text
editor my path is correct.

FrameMaker 10 does not start ("licensing expired")

2013-01-02 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Dear Anjaneai,

Is there a solution yet?
As Shlomo, I tried your suggested solution 1 and 2 without success. Again, just
like Shlomo, I don't want to try solution 3.
Just as a note: simply setting the date back to 2012 makes the license issue
disappear. But this is something I can do as I have admin rights on my PC. What
can I do for all my colleagues that are getting back from holidays today, need
Framemaker 10 and don't have admin rights??

Happy New Year to all Framers!

Kind regards,
Tom

Good luck!

Thanks,

We tried with "message URL"
but then the linked PDF has to be in the correct folder (relative to the PDF
that results from the Frame file). We tried with a gotolink and named
destination but the link is lost during PDF creation - which is logic as
Framemaker checks and does not find a result. We can get the links to work in
PDF but then it has to be done manually and that's not what we want.
I hope I made myself clear...

Thanks for your ideas,
Kind regards,
Tom

Set-up in Framemaker to link to PDF in attachment

Hi Yves,

Thanks for the tip.
It doesn?t work however, which seems logic to me: ?my_doc.pdf? isn?t in the
C:/temp/ folder, not even temporarily when opening the main pdf file. It?s only
in attachment of the main PDF and of course I can?t ask my users to put all
attached PDFs to the required folder.

[Framers] Framemaker 2015: text insets crashing constantly

2016-04-12 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello everyone,

Using Framemaker 2015 (latest patch 2 installed) on Windows we experience
constant crashes when importing text insets. The book and frame files are not
legacy files, they were created in Framemaker 2015. Yes, our path is quite deep
but when we copy the complete setup and test in Framemaker 8, everything is
working fine, up till now, still testing actually. Does anyone else have the
feeling the use of text insets is very unstable in the latest version?

Thanks in advance,

[Framers] Linking to text insets: page number?

2016-04-22 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hello everyone,

Using Framemaker 2015 (latest patch 3 installed) on Windows.

We want to use Framemaker as a little CMS: big container book file with about 5
Frame container files with a lot of text inset files.
Is there any way to display the page number of the position of a text inset in
the book file when setting a cross reference from the container file to a text
inset? We always get page 1 (as we use short text insets)...

Thanks in advance,
Tom
