[Frameworks] Contested Bodies
Contested Bodies Murdoch House Redruth Cornwall UK 19th June 6.30pm Programmed by Jo Millett and Rob Gawthrop for Gaslighting, an exhibition and programme of events at CMR Gallery in conjunction with the West Cornwall Freedom from Torture supporters group. Contested Bodies is a programme of short works which include both contemporary and historical artists’ films and video that focus on the question of the body as a contested cultural site for control and spectatorship. How can images pertaining to or referencing torture be presented without being voyeuristic or making an audience complicit? Artists have often used their own bodies as sites of experimentation and inquiry, making films and videos that are not always easy to watch. In Desert Storm artist Grace Ndiritu addresses rape as a tool of war, in an uncomfortable and at times intimate video. Mona Hatoum’s work, So Much I Want to Say shows a female face whose mouth is covered by male hands, a voice speaks the title, repeatedly. In her Eyes Skinned, a knife scratches at the eyes of a hooded face, with images of torture projected intermittently on it. In Quarantine, Gina Czarnecki challenges the viewers’ reading of pain, pleasure endurance and torture, through the repetitive movements of a dancer. in Sine, Gillian Dyson outlines the territory of a gallery through licking the wall, etching a line to mark a bodily and spatial limit. Both works by Fiona Leus Lambert prompt questions of empathy, through the human face. In Crying, a woman silently cries in front of the camera and in Faces from Hadamar, a series of still photographs of victims of the Nazi euthanasia programme slowly pass by. Thanks to the artists and Lux for their support. http://gaslightingfft.tumblr.com/ http://gaslightingfft.tumblr.com/ [Falmouth University] http://www.falmouth.ac.uk/ [Follow us] [Facebook] https://www.facebook.com/falmouthuni [Twitter] http://twitter.com/falmouthuni [Youtube] http://www.youtube.com/falmouthuniversity [Pintrest] http://pinterest.com/falmouthuni This email is confidential and intended solely for the use of the intended recipient only. [Frameworks] Liquid Light onto clear 16mm - any tips
I've been reading this thread with interest as I really dont have much idea what everyone is talking about when referring to liquid light. I've been trying to find out with no success. Is it home made emulsion? Can someone explain or point me to a reference? Thanks. Peter humble Sent from my iPhone On 10/06/2013, at 2:22 PM, lindsay mcintyre email.li...@gmail.com wrote: hi devon i haven't had much luck with liquid light but in my experience (both at the handmade film institute and on my own), with handmade emulsions, it seems to have something to do with the gelatin content. you could try heating up the liquid light with some extra gelatin so that it'll stick better. also, in the coating, the type of brush and amount of pressure used seems to make a difference. i've always found that spraying the emulsion is better than applying with a brush. it doesn't seem to matter whether it's on clear acetate or fogged stock - results are equally good. i find though, that the hand-processing afterwards needs to be quite delicate - and is best done in very cold solutions - less than 10 degrees Celsius if possible, and in small batches. please share if you come up with something interesting! lindsay mcintyre On Mon, Jun 3, 2013 at 12:48 PM, j...@kinetta.com j...@kinetta.com wrote: Turns out that getting emulsion to stick to different bases is a problem for Kodak, too. Re: [Frameworks] Liquid Light onto clear 16mm - any tips?
Thanks much to everybody for the excellent suggestions – great info! I'll report back how it goes. We were processing in trays, and had coated acetate film with Liquid Light* emulsion just before with spongepaintbrushes, and dried it with hair driers. Next we'll try: - spraying some clear varnish on and drying overnight then - coating with Liquid Light and letting that dry overnight then exposing and - processing very gently in buckets, in slightly cooled chemicals (hmm, I guess we find a fridge nearby? or ice cubes . . . ) and then setting up a better drying rig and drying the strips with hair drier. Depending how it goes we might try slightly longer exposures and shorter development time to lessen the wet wiggly duration of chances for emulsion floating off. I'm also feeling like maybe in this technique one should be prepared for extraordinary darkroom feats of keeping emulsion and film together, almost treating it like marbelling paper where you're carefully lifting the base through the liquid to catch the floating suspended emulsion / ink / image, then keeping it there to dry. Darkroom acrobatics, hurrah! *(fyi “Liquid Light” is a paintable photo emulsion for alternative surfaces - http://www.rockaloid.com/products.html) ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] Liquid Light onto clear 16mm - any tips?
Why Liquid Light? It's such a flimsy and temperamental coating, I've never really seen it live up to any of its claims over 20 years – even on crockery. Why don't you simply use Kodak Fine Grain Release stock (7302) - you expose it under an enlarger, you can process in traditional bw print chemistry and it is durable, scratch resistant and (most importantly) transparent (not translucent). Liquid Light is an Edsel in the back paddock that looks like it may rip down the road, but it has never started (and never will). [Frameworks] 3M 35mm Splice Tape
Hi All, I am in search of clear, perforated 35mm splice tape for a specific reason and need specific results. I have used the 305 tape but the adhesive seems to not stick so well and the splices pull apart. In the past I used the 3M perforated tape that would stick great and never pull apart. I see tape listed as Acrometal 35mm perforated tape, but know nothing about it. I'm curious if anybody has a roll of the older 3M tape around they would be willing to sell me, or know anything about the Acrometal tape. Re: [Frameworks] 3M 35mm Splice Tape
I don't think the 3M tape is made anymore. The 305 tape isn't the best, but it generally responds pretty well to heat. You may want to try getting a tack iron or something similar to press down the tape splice (just enough heat to "cure" the tape--not too much to burn the film). It also may help to clean the film splice areas with alcohol before taping to remove any oily residue. Using those two steps the 305 tape should stick OK. good luck, Ed-Original Message- From: Adam ParadisSent: Jun 10, 2013 1:56 PM To: "FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com" Subject: [Frameworks] 3M 35mm Splice Tape Hi All,I am in search of clear, perforated 35mm splice tape for a specific reason and need specific results.
