[Frameworks] FILM MAKERS COOP OF NY FUNDRAISER
HI CINE CATS! The FILM-MAKERS COOP OF NY is asking for help! We are raising money to update our film archive cooling system and to digitize more of our unique collection of over 5,000 films from the 1940s to present. We have rare and unique prints of 8mm, super8mm, 16mm, and 35mm. There are some fun perks if you donate, please check it out! https://igg.me/at/fmccampaign The FMC for instance houses 19 of my hand made, mostly hand processed and unique print film. They have managed to digitized 5 of them, with your support more of my films and many others will get a chance to be well archived both on film and digitally, and made increasingly more accessible to rent! Keep in touch for updates, as we will be adding perks and interviews about the FMC as the campaign continues!! Re: [Frameworks] FrameWorks Digest, Vol 94, Issue 20
HI Frameworkers I was wondering if anyone could give some titles of films that are "portrait films" I am teaching at Hofstra U, and I am feeling stumped after assigning the kids to make a portrait film, on examples of what to show them. Just juggling so much, thought I would reach out for some help on at least on of my 100s of to dos! Anything, narrative, experimental, avant-gaurd, structuralist, montage... just that tells the story of a person. preferably SHORT FILMS! But CAN also be features too. Re: [Frameworks] FrameWorks Digest, Vol 84, Issue 10
HI Frameworks! There are two Westwood (like Century) 35mm platter systems (but can be switched to change over I hear) going to be scrapped if no one wants to take them in HUDSON NY. I do not know when the demo of the interior of the theater will happen, it could be next week or it could be in a month or so. I am keeping an eye out as I live near by, and I am hoping to go in when the time comes and just take what I can, but I have little to no resources to remove and store or run these babies. I will take what I can when the time comes for whatever but if anyone wants to actually put to real use the projectors please contact me! kittylitter...@gmail.com film love xo ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
[Frameworks] storing chemistry
Hi Frameworks, I have an enclosed porch that I wanted to turn into a dark room, it is sort of insulated, but it is still cold, Im in upstate NY. I haven't put a thermometer out there, but we have some nights coming up that might be in the tens if not single digits coming up. What happens if chemicals freeze? Like, I have a liquid E6 kit and C14 kits etc.that I would like to keep on the porch. Can I store them out there, or is it better not to because temperatures at night can drop? Is it better if the temperature is more stable anyway? Like an inside closet? Can you use regular E-6 chemistry that I was using for other Ektachrome Super 8mm for Ektachrome Super 8mm G type? I just realized I have some roll that says it is G type - I read online that this is somehow a different type of film and that takes different type of development... is that true? what is it - just a type of film that can be Tungsten and Daylight - how is that possible? xoK ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Hi Frameworkers What 16mm film stock would you recommend for making an internegative from a positive? The positive is black and white mostly, and high contrast black and white but because of solarization and chemical effects some parts have changed to a yellow color that I would like to preserve when making the internet. xoKitty ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
[Frameworks] exposed but not fully
HI Frameworkers. I have a bit of a manic question. I have some rolls of color neg, fuji 400T mostly. That I shot 1 as I like to say, layer, of images onto already, but they were shot 2 stops under because I was going to add other layers onto them. Well things have gotten rather crazy with other projects and stuff so even though it has already been several months, I wont be able to add the other layers of images for another month! I have been keeping them so far in a cold room. Just for my nerves I want to know if this footage is going to be totally fu#ked because it is taking me so long to get to finishing the rolls. Or will it just be a slight difference in contrast or something like that? Has anyone had experience where they have waited 6 months to finish a roll? I think I must have in the past but I can not really recall. So I pose the question to you all. Thanks! With *Seduction..., *the New York-based artist continues her series inspired by coming of age rites of the American female teenager – rock roll rebellion, teen idolization, “dirty” novels, etc – addressing that time of transition in an interpretation of Georges Bataille's 1928 “The Story of the Eye”. [*Seduction…*] is about the seduction of the eye, of seeing and the desires that it creates. Or of not seeing… about what we do not see... what is not there, what is imagined, in the way that [Bataille’s] novel is not about sex but desire and fantasy of discovering unknown secrets of life and death of birth and excess, death and denial. KB *Seduction... *opens with a 16mm film performance event (on 12/15) that doubles as an apparatus for the live production of photograms, which along with the film loops, projectors and ephemera from the event – the only evidence of the event that took place – will be mounted in an exhibition (opening on 12/19). The experiential, mysterious, and uncertain nature of Bauer’s work draws influence from 1960s expanded cinema, the ritualism and black magic of Kenneth Anger, Viennese Actionism, and body art among others. *Seduction…* may also be seen as a “literal cinema”, or a work in which content is further considered as an exploration of the material and technological nature of celluloid film and its projection*.* During the performance, light from 16mm film loops, projecting images of the eyes of the female performers onto their actual eyes, exposes photosensitive paper, positioned as both stage and backdrop, to capture impressions of the bodies and objects in the room. Bataille’s concepts of vision and liquids surface in the performance culminating as an erotic presence, summoned and transferred through milk, urine, and raw egg. Sound is an important and purposeful coalescence of the voices of the performers reading excerpts from Bataille’s “Story…”, analog synth compositions, and the hum of the rotating film strips. The artworks in *Seduction...* are conceived not as remnants or residues, but as temporal crystallizations - the filmic surface itself composed of crystals - of the forces at play during the performance. Bauer states, …the images are not representations, just as the performance is not an adaptation of *The Story of the Eye - *instead they are *presentations*, making its content present…” __ *KATHERINE BAUER* works primarily with 16mm film and its material potential for sculpture, photography and installation. Much of her work involves mythologies, folklores, and narratives. Her work has previously exhibited at Participant Inc., NY; Shoot the Lobster, Dusseldorf, Germany; Place Gallery, Portland, Oregon; and Immanence Gallery, Paris, France among others. Bauer was awarded a 2012-13 Cité Internationale des Arts Paris Residency and was a recipient of a Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Foundation Fellowship (2012-13). [Frameworks] funding
Hi Frameworks, I have a film project that I need to raise money in order to complete. I am working entirely with a 16mm work flow for this project. I know there is Kickstarter and Indie Gogo but I was wondering about other funding options. I am currently a resident of NY State, but I have the ability to relocate to LA, Toronto, or Paris. And depending on the offer anywhere… NYSCA seems to only be offering Fellowships for digital media this season. I also could use a residency where I could use post production and editing facilities for 16mm film for free, or lab grants for film development etc. I still need to shoot a few more things, optically print some FX, edit on a flat bed, cut a negative and then make a final print, preferably marrying the sound to the image. I have some dwindling personal funds for this, and of course there are shitty jobs I can get, but I am trying to get this project done asap so I wanted a way to raise funds instead of waiting till I get the dream job etc. to fund the film. Any suggestions would be a great help... Thanks Kitty ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

[Frameworks] Paris Film Performance Announcement
*Teenage Dream Sequence: An invocation of Jeanne d'Arc by Katherine Bauer * *“More than her defiance of the Church’s authority, more than her claims to know the future, more than her perhaps, heterodox enthusiasm for the host, she was condemned for experiencing the other world as simply and as concretely as she experienced this world every day.”* The invocation ritual combines a love song with the four primal elements to invoke the spirit of Jeanne d’Arc to be transcribed onto photographic paper. The bodies of the mediums upon the photo paper will transcribe through aid of the light from a 16mm projector the energy of each of the four acts: Water, Earth, Air, and Fire. The filmic images are the visual translation of the aural rendering of the love songs. The patterns of light will pulsate through the mediums' bodies at 24fps onto the photographic paper. What will remain will be a document of the spirit of Jeanne d’Arc awoken and reimagined through this mimetic ritual. [Frameworks] steenbeck in NYC still needs home
Hi Frameworks, I know that many of you did respond to wanting to give a loving home to my steenbeck which is in an NYU building in NYC and need to be taken out of there. See I am in LA. So I can not help you other than lead you there and get you in the building during a week day. maybe the weekend. I apologize for those of you who did show an interest and then I did not get back to you. I heard back from a lot of people. So I was trying to sort through all of that and find those that were serious and those whom ideally would keep it in NYC and would allow me to use it when I returned or at least have it in a place where it could be some what communally accessed. I want to find a place where if you did not need it or want it after any amount of time you would not just sell it off or give it away to someone you did not know but would contact me and see if at that point I could help you find another place for it. It came from the NYC community and I thought it was a good idea to keep it active there. However, I am open to all sorts of things now since my ideal spots ended up not working out. It is a 6 plate. Taken apart there are 4 parts including the trim bin. the largest part is 3 1/2'' and is heavy, but it is on wheels. I recommend using a van or a truck with a ramp. Then 2 very strong people or 3 people can maneuver it. Otherwise to lift it into a van could take upwards of 4 very strong people. It is bulky!! It is heavy!! It is a wonderful machine that could last you a life time!!! It has mag and optical sound. All bulbs working. Has recently been serviced by Steenbeck master Paul Tomasko. I dont know the year...I think 80s. Paul said they were bought new by NYU and he has serviced this machine throughout its time there. its a good one. Please let me know if you can take it from 383 Lafayette asap! There is an elevator to the street to help you. I as I said am in LA and can only help you over the phone. [Frameworks] shooting and hand processing expired film
Hi Frameworks I was wondering if you had any tips for shooting and then for the hand processing of expired black and white Tri-X film. Like, does the film tend to want more or less light when it is old and was not stored properly at all... Does it take more time or less time in comparison to good film with the developer? I wanted to push this film like 2 or 3 stops is that something that is harder to achieve - pushing many stops - when the film is old? Also it may have vinegar syndrome or that may just be a musty smell. Does Reversal or Prints stock get vinegar syndrome - does it spread to reels and cameras and then to other film? That is a lot - any tips on any of it would be fun. xKat On Thu, Aug 9, 2012 at 10:01 AM, frameworks-requ...@jonasmekasfilms.comwrote: Send FrameWorks mailing list submissions to frameworks@jonasmekasfilms.com To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to frameworks-requ...@jonasmekasfilms.com You can reach the person managing the list at frameworks-ow...@jonasmekasfilms.com When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of FrameWorks digest... I was basically forced to resign and the press release came with the statement of termination immediately. In reality I was terminated without advance notice compensation, severance, etc. I am now in a position to seek retirement benefits from Social Security, which will not even be enough to pay my rent. I will be seeking unemployment and perhaps legal services. The press release on the Canyon Cinema website was published without my approval. I will have a position paper written soon once I can overcome my anger and disgust. I was dismissed without notice, compensation, nor reasons. This is to clarify the situation. Please do not email me at this address, please use my personal email domi...@cinemod.net I only check framework postings twice a year. The Canyon Board had not even approached me on this termination before I was notified on July 30th. There was a secret unnnounced Executive Meeting without my presence nor advance notice to our shareholders to terminate me after 33 years of service. However the Bd forced a former Bd member and employee to contact my ex wife who is fragile and sensitive about their concerns and accusations. A very unprofessional and inappropriate way of dealing with an employee and member for more than 30 years. Again do not contact me at this email address for I will be withdrawing from Frameworks shortly. The letter hand deivered to me stated ; Notice of termination of the employment to Dominic Angerame Effective immediately your employment at will as Executive Director at Canyon Cinema is terminated. You must immediately turn in your keys, passcodes, equipment, bank cheques and any other corporation related items to the Board of Directors Sincerely, The Board of Directors: Maia C Carpenter Nathaniel Dorsky Denah Johnson Dayna Plays Mark Toscano I was then notified that I could not return to the office to pick up my personal items or films and they would be mailed back to me. I've been getting a lot of questions about 16mm so I thought I'd begin a service catering to reversal stocks. Any advice on prices would be very welcome and appreciated.
