Right off the top of my head, I do think that audio is incredibly important
to Arnold's work, and unfortunately, there is no way to include audio in a
gif (yet...), so in that sense I suppose it could be considered a
compromise.
Unfortunately, my computer isn't loading the gifs that I assume are on that
page, so I can't offer any informed criticism, though I assume they are
re-mixes and in that sense, I don't think they are a compromise of his work
since they by no means are stand-ins for the originals.

Ha, I didn't realize the text on that page was in fact a couple of links.

So, I do think that the alienating effect of the original pieces, based
primarily on the repetition and how it plays against our expectations
(based on the narrative conventions of the original work), is kind of lost
since the gif is a medium of repetition. In this sense, they resemble most
gifs adapted from motions picture media.
The fact that this alienating effect is bypassed in this way, though, is
very interesting and in that sense I think these gifs are an incredibly
interesting commentary on the importance of medium and the conventions that
surround each medium in a culture.

Also, its a bit more searching in this digital age, but you can do the same
thing with a couple of VCRs and a TV (and thrift store tapes) or some film
rewinds, a viewer, and a splicer (and discarded 16mm films).

 supported, so you will have to switch to FCPX or another editing program some 
 day, probably within the next 2-3 years.  FCPX is already over 2 years old.  
 Best to accept that and prepare as soon as you can and figure out how to 
 transfer old projects to new formats.  Stopgap bandaging things with 
 partitions or old OS images won't last forever.

BASEMENT IS A SURVEY OF CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS WORKING WITH LO-DEF, LO-TECH,
AND LO-FI MOTION PICTURE TECHNIQUES. FOUNDED IN RESPONSE TO THE COMMERCIAL
RACE FOR HI-RES AND TRUE-TO-LIFE IMAGE QUALITY, BASEMENT IS A CELEBRATION
OF THE MEDIATED EXPERIENCE AS AN AESTHETIC EXPERIENCE.

BASEMENT IS A TRAVELING SHOW, OPENING IN THE FAMOUS NEW YORK CITY AND

Most of the more established festivals still send me confirmation of
reciept as well as formalized rejection emails.

However I do think there may be factor at work, and it has to do with
emerging technologies on the programmer-end of things.
Thanks to contemporary communications technologies and the lowering prices
of high quality digital exhibition equipment, I think there are a lot more
small, DIY festivals emerging around the globe. I, myself, co-run one by
the name of the BASEMENT Media Fest. Ours in particular is free and we do
everything in our free time. Its going on its fourth year, and we've
learned a great deal in that time. Sadly, in the past, we have neglected to
send out rejection emails as well as confirmation that we've received
works. I think this was mostly due to our lack of prior experience and lack
of free time (and occasionally, because filmmakers fail to provide us with
their contact info OR their info is illegible).

Anyway, I think its really easy nowadays to organize a film festival (or at
least easier than it has been) - you can post an open call online and
submissions just flood in. But I do think a downside of this is you have a
lot of programmers entering the field who are maybe unfamiliar with a lot
of the protocol OR who have underestimated the time-commitment necessary to
organizing such an event.

That's my $0.02, at least.

[Frameworks] BASEMENT Media Fest in Brooklyn

Hello All,

The BASEMENT Media Fest http://basementmediafest.com/ is a survey of
contemporary artists working with lo-def, lo-tech, and lo-fi motion pix
techniques. Founded in response to the commercial race for hi-res and
true-to-life IMG quality, BASEMENT is a celebration of the mediated
experience as an aesthetic experience. Equal parts glitchd digital vidz,
fuzzy VHS, and grimy 16mm film, this year’s screening ought to plaza any
connoisseur of experimental .MOVs.

We'll be screening our first of two identical programs this Saturday
6.15.2013 at 7:30pm at the
Spectaclehttp://www.spectacletheater.com/basement-media-fest/in
Williamsburg (the second program will be the same time on 06.23.13).
Admission is $5 and we'll be joined by artist Clint Enns who will answer
questions and generally hang out after the screening.

I don't really understand what the big regret is, Mike - the festival
was free to submit to. Was that the only copy of your film or
something? If so, I can see about sending it back to you if you could
send me some money to cover postage.

I definitely know what you mean, John. We've accepted electronic
submissions in the past, due to extenuating circumstances, but we
generally like having the physical copies just because it makes it
easier for us to keep things organized.

 Why not save yourself a whole bunch of hassle and have submissions be
 electronic? Thats quickly become the new standard and no need to deal with a
 pile of mile in your basement where submissions can get misplaced. Mailing
 DVDs is a waste of time, money and resources.

[Frameworks] War Films Featuring Prayer

Hello everyone,
I'm working on a project right now involving footage of soldiers in
Hollywood films praying. Does anyone have any recommendations for any
films in particular for me to look into? I feel like I've seen this a
lot of war films, especially ones based on WWII, but I'm having
trouble thinking of specific titles. Any help is appreciated

 Find the video you want to download on Youtube, copy the URL. Next,  Open
 Mpeg Streamclip, go to the top bar, select FILE  Open URL and paste the URL
 into the box. From here you can either download the original file youtube is
 hosting, or convert it from its native codec/container into whatever codec
 you're editing in, i.e. Prores 422.
