P.S. I am new to Freebsd. I like the Handbook, because it seems up-to-date
and strikes a balance between too little and too many details. However it is
always good to expose concepts first. For instance, in zfs, what is a
dataset? I had to scan the book to understand and still... For now I assume
that it is something created with zfs create. But many datasets appear
created by the install procedure. So it is not so clearcut. Not before 19.8
are ZFS features exposed in a rather reference format. I would hope that the
definition of pool, vdev, dataset be more clearly exposed early in the
chapter.

very mobile or tablet friendly.

My profession is currently a front end developer and I would love to tweak

think.

I think I speak for numerous people when saying we would be very
interested in that. The FDP Primer shows how to check out and build the
docs:

There is a lot there to digest. I (and others) can help you get a local
build of the website working to experiment on.

As an aside, note that we have beta-quality epubs which might be more
suited to mobile use. They are on the FTP server now:

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/book.epub

The "beta" part is that image links are broken. I investigated that,
and it's something to do with the build environment--the links are fine
when built normally on a developer system. However, I ran out of time
to work on it. It only affects images, which are mostly in the
installation chapters, so most of the book is usable.

Having the handbook responsive would help a great deal, especially if for
example i'm configuring a system and wanted to lookup the handbook on my
phone for reference.

Let me know if this is something you guys would be interested in.

Yes, I haven't really reviewed them beyond the initial replacement.
The changes kept growing and growing and I had to stop.

Oh, and many of these are contractions, which should be avoided anyway.

Well the main questions are ...

1) Should someone brave just go ahead and commit massively
such cleanups?

It is tempting.

2) Is there a clever review process to go through these?
Phabricator with documentation team, or assume common
sense?

In comments, obvious errors don't need any review. I saw one change in
there that changed "safe" to "safely", but the original might have been
meant as "-safe", like "multiuser-safe".

Those types of changes should be reviewed, and also changes that are not
to comments, like the output in the last batch. Maybe the original
printf output was meant to line up.

3) There are many common issues: is "thru" something we should
accept in comments. How about dont vs don't ?

The old "be generous in what you accept and strict in what you produce"
saying can apply. The code is what we produce, and comments should be
as good as we can make them. "Thru" is difficult to justify. "Dont"
and "cant" could be from trying to avoid an apostrophe. Just spelling
out the words instead of using the contraction solves the problem.

We have found in other documentation that bad sections are often copied
and pasted as templates. Fixing them avoids later, bigger fixes.

"Filesystem" versus "file system"

2016-04-14 Thread Warren Block
The FDP Primer word list shows only "file system", but does not give any
context for the usage of that term.

This is a mistake, and it's time to fix it. We can fix it with a
compound word, by combining two words into a single word with a more
specific meaning.

As an example, consider the word "keyboard". A keyboard is a specific
thing. A "key board" could be a number of things, including a wooden
board with nails for hanging keys.

Likewise, "file system" could mean several things, including a file
hierarchy or some other system of files.

"Filesystem" is a compound word, a single noun, referring to the
arrangement of bytes and inodes and clusters and fragments that form a
place to store files. This is almost always what we mean in a computer
context.

I have talked about this in the past, too:
https://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-doc/2012-July/020220.html

It's not getting any better. People are still not sure what to use.

For now, I only plan to change the word list, making it "filesystem" and
adding a description for context. Uses of the two-word form can be
changed when encountered.

explaining why and when one should be using one of the *-ueui-*

  https://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/bsdinstall-pre.html

There are several issues that make this potentially complicated to
explain to the end user.

First, how can the user tell if they need UEFI? For a standard, it is
remarkably loose. The vendors won't tell the users, there are no
tell-tale identification marks shown during boot. The setup screens
aren't standardized.

At present, only 64-bit UEFI computers (the great majority) will work
with FreeBSD uefi images. And they will only boot into a 64-bit version
of FreeBSD. As far as I know, the uefi images will actually also boot
on a BIOS computer, so that eases a restriction.

And there is the issue of disabling secure boot.

And most (but not all) UEFI computers are capable of legacy booting a
normal BIOS-type disk. Provided you figure out how to enable that.
"CSM" (compatibility support mode) is a standard term, but it is not
always used.

The "last modified" date comes from the $FreeBSD$ tag, but only the one in the

to the book. Fixing this would require scanning the document sources for the most recent

I'll update the copyright, and that will also change the date in book.xml. So
it will be correct until one of the other files changes...

I noticed when I forwarded the link to a young talent that the "last changed"

Agreed. I've pointed this out in the past with the Handbook. What

Should I post a patch or is there an automatic process that needs to be
fixed?

The "last modified" date comes from the $FreeBSD$ tag, but only the one
in the book.xml file. So it is misleading, and usually not the date of
the most recent update to the book. Fixing this would require scanning
the document sources for the most recent date in the doc toolchain,
which is possible, it's just something that needs to be done.

I'll update the copyright, and that will also change the date in
book.xml. So it will be correct until one of the other files changes...

Yes, this has been a problem for a while. I have just committed a
change that will give a default manpath that includes ports. The HTML
document has been rebuilt, so please refresh and test that link again.

Is it difficult to adjust this without unnoticedly making the link

The documents are rebuilt frequently, so this should not be a problem.
Old archived versions of the documents will have links to older
releases, but that is pretty much expected for old documents.

Thank you! This message should probably be posted to the
freebsd-translators list, though. Other translators have probably
experienced the same problems. Or will.

I think some translation teams have lists of translations for common
words and phrases.

There are two things I'd like to point out, though.

1) A few terms/phrases were not so easy to translate me. When in doubt, I
tried to remain consistent with my previous translations of the Leap
Seconds and NanoBSD articles. This is a list of the translations that were
a bit of a problem and what I translated them to.

- source tree -> arbol de codigo fuente
- release engineering -> ingenieria de lanzamientos
- testers -> testers
- bleeding-edge -> bleeding-edge
- handbook -> manual
- strings attached -> restricciones
- bug / bug fix -> error / corrección de errores
- production quality -> calidad de producción
- tunable -> variable
- resource locks -> primitivas de sincronización
- mirror (left untranslated)
- unstripped kernel (left untranslated)

2) Some phrases feature wordplays that are impossible to translate into
spanish. I translated them anyway, but the result can be confusing IMHO.
Examples are:

- How cool is FreeBSD? -> Translated as "¿Que tan frío es FreeBSD?" (In
spanish we don't have a distinction between cool as in "not warm" and cool
as in "awesome").

- Why is it called FreeBSD? -> I believe this can create confussion because
we have two separate terms. Free as in "free beer" translates to "gratis"
and free as in "free speech" translates to "libre".

I don't know if it is possible to add a small note to the translation to
clarify the wordplay, but I think it would help matters.

The current translation diff can be seen at:
https://reviews.freebsd.org/D5153 .

Most monitors, really. The CSS throws away a lot of space and uses tiny
crimped fonts. Except for fonts, which are ridiculously overstated.

Quite some time back, this irritated me enough to stomp through the CSS,
willfully modifying anything that looked funny. The result is not perfect, but
still a huge improvement.

There have been proposals to replace the main page entirely, but that now looks
like it will take a while.

So I created this review of my modifications:

https://reviews.freebsd.org/D3215

Previews of how the main page looks on 1920x1200 and 1024x768 monitors are
here:

http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/tmp/wide-1920.png
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/tmp/wide-1024.png

It would be nice to space the four elements across the top more evenly, The
horizontal scrollbar wrongly implies that there is something to the right.
Fixes welcome.

I propose to commit this in the next three days unless there are
complaints or submitted improvements.

Thanks!

And I think it should be:

# dd if=*FreeBSD-10.0-RELEASE-amd64-memstick.img* of=/dev/*da0* bs=1M conv=sync

With a capital m in bs. This is because I tried to use the command and it
returned dd: invalid number: '1m'.

I apologize if my English is not too good, but I'm not from an English-speaking
country. I send you this message because I wanted to help you. I hope it is
useful :)

Only the Linux utilities are sensitive to the case of the unit, but yes,
we should change it in the documentation.

The device name will not be correct on Linux, either. That is a
FreeBSD-specific command. We could add a Linux variation, but it ought
to explain how to determine the correct device to write.

Incidentally, we should test using conv=sync, noerror, sparse. The last
one in particular could make writing memory sticks faster.

listed in the handbook, other alternatives to OPENSSL and GNUTLS like
NSS, POLARSSL and WOLFSSL. If anyone is unsure of what I'm refering

and see the Makefile on /usr/ports/ftp/curl to see the possible
options.

If the application already supports a choice of sub-applications, it is
nice when the port provides those same options.

Porters generally do not add functionality to an application. devd(8)
is not a drop-in replacement for HAL. It just offers a similar function
that can be used for detecting hot-plugged input devices. Some FreeBSD
developers added code to allow for that use, see
x11-servers/xorg-server/files/patch-config_devd.c. Usually, this type
of work is added upstream, in the application itself. That makes for
much less work in the future. Otherwise, porters have to re-integrate
the changes with each new version of the application.

As far as suggesting adding options, that would be more of a policy
thing for the ports people. It's not something the documentation group
can add to the Porter's Handbook on our own.

To add to this, if editing an existing section, see
https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/fdp-primer/writing-style-guide.html#writing-style-whitespace-changes

In short, whitespace-only changes to existing documents (indenting,
blank lines, adding spaces) should be kept separate from content

I'd like to see that happen as well, mainly because of my dislike of
the extra HAL dependency. Warren, maybe we can work on this on
Phabricator? If you can provide your outline we can get it moving
towards a handbook patch sooner. Maybe involving the ports people as

The quick start (which is widely ignored) does have instructions which

I struggled for some time with this parameter and only understood what was

The man page for FreeBSD 11 already has a better description, although
it does not describe the behavior when both -f and a message are given.
Even if the copyright of the Linux man page allowed us to copy it

highlight those sections with out-of-band underlines:

I have no evidence, but suspect the number of people using non-VT100,

I guess my question was more why? This isn't ezjail-specific, and neither
of the other two jail tutorials in this chapter mention lo1. If having lo1 is
important, then we should explain why and probably do so in the first jail
example and then apply it consistently in all the jail examples. They why
should detail if this is an optional nice to have or if this is critical to
security and apps can break out of jails otherwise. My assumption is the
former, but seeing it documented as a mandatory step in the ezjail config
implies the latter to me.

It is not required, but (as I understand it), can prevent problems with
the host seeing jail loopback traffic. I'm attempting to find an

/etc/motd update

2014-08-13 Thread Warren Block
The existing /etc/motd breaks many of our document rules and has some
weird language constructs. The current version in HEAD:

http://svnweb.freebsd.org/base/head/etc/motd?view=co

Here is a rewrite. URLs are now the only thing on a line, instead of
inline and hard to locate. No contractions are used. Odd phrases are
rephrased:

Here is the proposed new version and a diff:
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/motd/motd
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/motd/motd.diff

Making it clear that commands are to be typed without quotes is a little
difficult. This file is plain text, so no out-of-band highlighting is
available. ANSI colors or bold could be used, but the terminal is not
guaranteed to be able to display them. The only really clear way would
be to put commands on a separate line, indented. That takes up more
space, maybe not a big deal.

The other issue is whether we should mention the search box on the web
page, which is not very effective at finding things.

My first thought was that it's definitely better, but too long since 25
rows of text won't fit on the default console.

My second thought was that a better approach might be to replace most of
the contents with a URL like:

http://freebsd.org/getting-started-with-freebsd-11

and a reference to a local copy of the content a release time. That
would allow unlimited formatting, let us target different user
audiences, and let us improve the online version over time.

That would allow much more vertical space in the actual intro file,
and clearer explanations:

Type
  man man
for an introduction to manual pages.

Where should the intro file be stored? /usr/doc is not always present.

Just manpages to start with. I'll worry about updating the handbook

I'd at least like a manpage describing what I'm about to throw into

I don't know if we have a way to do that short of putting it in a

bad examples at all. Way too many people only look at the examples and
do not read the explanatory text. Seemingly all of them.

Given that, my preference would be to have the text explain what to
avoid (and why), the right way to do it, and then show the right way:

paraDo not set permissions to literal777/literal! Use only
the minimum value necessary. Only the read and execute permissions
for the file owner are needed here:/para

  screenprompt.root; userinputchmod 600 example.sh/userinput/screen

If an example of the wrong way is shown, explaining why it is wrong is
usually needed. But the explanation can make it even more of a
distraction.

application appearance in HTML

The current CSS makes application elements appear in bold text in
XHTML. For example:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/desktop-browsers.html

This repeated use of bold makes for uncomfortable and fatiguing reading.

Allan and I have searched for less severe forms of highlighting.
Without resorting to color, there are not many options. The best I've
seen so far is font-variant: small-caps;, but that is quickly annoying
also.

My suggestion at this point is to just remove the CSS entry for
applications. The application names are names, and recognizably
distinct from other words on their own.

Unless there are complaints, I will plan to remove the .application
entry from docbook.css before the end of this week.

this best. Ideally something like tidy(1) would be able to fix the
indentation for me. What do you think is the best way to solve this
problem?

At present, I'm not aware of an automatic way to do that. We definitely
have a need for a program that will take arbitrary DocBook XML files,
parse them, and reformat them with our indentation rules.

For manual changes, editors/geany will indent or unindent sections while
keeping track of tabs and spaces. If configured that way, anyway, and
I'm not sure of all the settings (but it works here).

Start highlighting and stop when you get to the first line of a screen
or programlisting element. Change indent level (ctrl-i, ctrl-u), then
skip over the screen or programlisting and repeat.

Of course, this should be done as part of a whitespace-only cleanup.
When the indent changes, lines often need to be rewrapped.
textproc/igor can help locate problems.

Rewrite of the Handbook Printing chapter

2014-04-04 Thread Warren Block

The existing Handbook printing chapter has many weaknesses:
It does not cover simple setup well.
It does not cover current devices well.
It uses some confusing terminology and shows examples for uncommon
  situations.

I've complained about these problems before, but a few months ago, Dru
asked me to do something about it.

This is a from-scratch rewrite, attempting to address the major problems
of the old version.

http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/printing/printing-lpd.html
http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/printing/printing-other.html

It adds a quick-start section, simplifies setup, vastly reduces the
section on shared printers in schools and businesses, and provides a
framework that allows the addition of other printing systems. The first
candidate for that would be CUPS.

Initial responses have been good. If there are no showstopper
complaints, I plan to commit this in the next week.

http://www.wonkity.com/~wblock/replaceable/report-2014-03-12.txt

Notes: I have fixed the FDP Primer, as the counts in the sample report
show. The Handbook printing chapter current count does not apply,
because that is my rewrite of the old printing chapter with none of the
previous content.

Description:
Text in userinput tags is not rendered differently from the rest of text in
screen elements. As an example, consider the text in
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/articles/committers-guide/article.html#idp62149040.
In the screen section after Take a quick note of how it looks before
moving on to the next step; doing the actual merge:, the prompts, user input,
and computer output are all rendered in the same font and style.

Interactive text analysis

2014-03-06 Thread Warren Block
http://www.hemingwayapp.com/ shows an interesting way of examining and
making suggestions on improving text quality.

Ultimately, it would be really nice to see textproc/igor integrated with
an editor.

A font rendering problem, but where?

On FreeBSD, Firefox and Chrome work. Midori does not show the
underlines, unless it is zoomed in four or five steps (it does not show
an actual zoom number).

On Windows, Firefox shows the underline on the first line. If I force
it to use my preferred fonts, it shows only the underline on the second
line. Chrome does as reported, not showing either. IE 11 shows both
underlines.

If I zoom in, the underlines appear in Chrome at 125%.

The question is whether this is something we can fix in the HTML or CSS.

I'm guessing yes. The first is without ZFS stats (5 lines), the second with
ZFS stats (6 lines). The text describes the 'top' heading as being 5 or 6
lines. So these two header formats are the two users will encounter,
depending on their use or non-use of ZFS.

If intentional, it's a bit misleading. Better to show just one more
realistically and note that the output will vary depending on the individual
system. It does not seem necessary mention ZFS specifically.

And now I see that it does mention ZFS conditionally. The second header
has more detail, but the uptime has been moved more to the right than
would show in a standard 80-column console.

Another method that has become common in recent years is

a href=//www.freebsd.org/blah/blah

Which will keep the current protocol, be that HTTP or HTTPS

Although I am not sure how some of the more basic browsers like lynx
might handle that. Google et all use it for including javascript to
avoid 'mixed content?.

Cool. That would solve the problem here as well. To what degree should
we support the ?lynx?es out there and cli based browsers ?

Is there an example page we can test? Maybe this is already supported
by some.

I've quickly switch those back to userinput

I used simple logic, if talking about a command in a paragraph, use

send/command

That's correct, IMO. Semantically, command tags could be used inside
userinput, but that really does not seem to gain much, and would suggest
filenames and other content in screen sections would become even more
complicated.

Also, I just noticed that a bunch of the stuff from my previous zfs
patch didn't get in (I sent 2, a whitespace and a content patch, and
only the whitespace one got in), so I've included the updated zfs send
stuff as well (how to do replication without root)

bcr responded about that, and was waiting for feedback (I think).

IIRC, this means the stuff I wrote for the CARP chapter last week is
wrong with regards to command instead of userinput

...yes. Fixed.
